- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Investigation of perceived parental attitude in children exposed to sexual abuse: A case-control study
Bayrak, Nurten Gülsüm; Emirza, Elif Güzide; Uzun, Sevda
Background: The enduring impact of children being subjected to sexual abuse is characterized by lasting traumatic effects. Aims: This study aims to assess the influence of perceived parental attitudes on the incidence of sexual abuse in children who have experienced such abuse, comparing them with a control group. Methods: The research took place at the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) of a hospital in northern Turkey and in the pediatric outpatient clinics of the same institution. The study evaluated 101 children who were exposed to sexual abuse and 100 children who were not. Data collection took place between November 2022 and August 2023. The study employed a ‘Descriptive Information Form’ and the ‘Parental Attitude Scale’ for both case and control groups. The t-test for independent samples, descriptive statistics, and logistic regression analysis were used for data analysis. Results: Analysis of scores from the Parental Attitude Scale revealed significantly lower mean scores in acceptance-involvement and strictness-supervision in the case group (p <.05). The mean scores for ‘acceptance-involvement’ (X¯ = 22.82 ± 6.26, X¯ = 25.71 ± 3.89) were highest in the case and control groups. Neglectful attitude (38.6%) was more prevalent in the case group, while the control group exhibited a higher frequency of democratic attitude (37%). In terms of predictors, acceptance-involvement (OR = 1.091, p =.005) and maternal employment (OR = 4.410, p <.001) were identified as the most significant predictors of exposed to sexual abuse. The study’s Cronbach’s alpha value for the scale was α =.743. Conclusion: The study’s findings on parental attitudes suggest a potential connection between children’s exposure to sexual abuse and inadequate parental acceptance, involvement, supervision, and control.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1An Examination of Relationships Between Postural Habits and Awareness of Fatigue and Musculoskeletal Discomfort in Nurses
Tuncer, Metin; Tuncer, Gülsüm Zekiye; Turan, Şeyma; Khorshtd, Leyla
Introduction: Prolonged fatigue, caused by the hospital's demanding workload and physical demands, can increase strain on the musculoskeletal system, leading to musculoskeletal issues that may negatively impact nurses' job performance and quality of life. High postural awareness, on the other hand, can help nurses develop correct posture and movement habits, reducing the risk of experiencing discomfort, thus preserving their physical health and supporting workforce sustainability. Therefore, it is of particular importance to determine the relationship of postural awareness to fatigue and musculoskeletal discomfort in nurses working in a hospital environment with heavy working conditions and many ergonomic risks. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the postural habits, awareness, occupational fatigue levels and musculoskeletal disorders of nurses working in hospitals and to examine the relationships between these factors. Method: This study used a quantitative cross-sectional design. The study sample consisted of 132 nurses working in a hospital in Türkiye. The data for the study were collected between July and October 2023 using the Occupational Fatigue Exhaustion/Recovery Scale (OFER), Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire (CMDQ) and Postural Habits and Awareness Scale (PHAS). Results: A significant positive, low-level correlation was found between the Recovery subscale of the OFER scale and the Postural Habits subscale of the PHAS scale (r = 0.277, p < 0.05). A significant negative, moderate-level correlation was observed between the Chronic Fatigue subscale of the OFER scale and the Postural Habits subscale of the PHAS scale (r = −0.311, p < 0.001). Additionally, a significant negative, moderate-level correlation was found between the Acute Fatigue subscale of the OFER scale and the Postural Habits subscale of the PHAS scale (r = −0.326, p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study found that as nurses' correct postural habits improved, both acute and chronic fatigue decreased, whereas recovery increased. It is suggested that interventions aimed at enhancing postural awareness and promoting correct postural habits in nurses may also positively influence occupational fatigue and exhaustion.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) prevention programs contribute to increases in children’s knowledge and skills to protect themselves from CSA. However, there is a paucity of research investigating self-protection behaviors among children to demonstrate whether relevant CSA knowledge and skills are transferable in risky situations. We aimed to examine the effectiveness of the “I am learning to protect myself with Mika” program on preschool children’s self-protection behaviors. The sample included 51 preschool children (54.9% girls) from Izmir, Turkey and their parents. The mean age of the children was 65.57 months (SD = 7.21). The present study employed a posttest-only control group design, and the classrooms were randomly assigned to the intervention and wait-list comparison groups. The participating teachers implemented the program over a five-week period. Then, children’s self-protection behavior was assessed with children from both groups using a role-play scenario involving a request from a stranger. Accordingly, we tested whether children in the intervention group were more likely to demonstrate self-protection behaviors compared to those in the comparison group. The findings showed that the intervention group (77.3%) rejected the offer from strangers and behaved more safely than did the wait-list comparison group (24.2%; χ2(1) = 13.879, p < 0.001). “I am learning to protect myself with Mika” was found to be effective in contributing to preschoolers’ self-protective behaviors. The promising results obtained in this study may encourage further exploration of the behavioral outcomes of sexual abuse prevention programs.

Introduction: Neck pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder associated with pain, reduced cervical mobility, and decreased muscle strength, often leading to functional limitations. Chiropractic manipulation is widely used as a conservative treatment, yet the comparative effects of different techniques remain unclear. ## Objective To compare the effects of the diversified and drop table chiropractic techniques on pain, cervical range of motion, and muscle strength in individuals with non-specific neck pain. ## Methods This randomized controlled clinical trial included 45 participants with non-specific neck pain, randomly assigned to three groups: diversified (DG; n = 15), drop table (DTG; n = 15), and control (CG; n = 15). Interventions were applied twice weekly for four weeks. The primary outcome measure was pain level assessed using the McGill Pain Questionnaire. Secondary outcome measures were cervical joint range of motion assessed with a goniometer and isometric neck muscle strength assessed using a microFET2 dynamometer. Outcomes were assessed pre- and post-intervention. ## Results Both DG and DTG demonstrated significant increases in cervical range of motion compared with the CG. Pain levels significantly decreased in both intervention groups. DG showed significant improvements across all isometric muscle strength measures, while DTG demonstrated selective improvements in flexion and right lateral flexion. CG showed no significant changes, except a decrease in extensor strength. ## Conclusion Chiropractic interventions effectively reduce pain and enhance cervical function in individuals with non-specific neck pain. The diversified technique provided broader muscle strength improvements, while the drop table technique showed more selective effects, emphasizing the need for individualized technique selection in clinical practice. - MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Evaluation of Antioxidant and Enzyme Inhibition Properties of Siran Propolis: Correlations With Phenolic Content Determined by LC–MS/MS
Balci, Neslihan; Aslan, Kubra; Erturk, Adem; Gulcin, Ilhami
This study evaluates the antioxidant activity, enzyme inhibition potential, and phenolic composition of ethanolic Siran propolis extract. Antioxidant capacity was measured using reducing power (CUPRAC, FRAP, and Fe3+-reducing) and radical scavenging (DPPH·, ABTS·+, and DMPD·+) assays. The extract showed strong reducing ability, surpassing standard antioxidants in CUPRAC and FRAP assays, correlating with high ferulic acid (40.40 mg/g) and p-coumaric acid (88.60 mg/g) levels identified by LC–MS/MS. While it demonstrated notable DPPH· scavenging (IC50: 30.14 μg/mL), ABTS·+ activity was weaker (IC50: 272.44 μg/mL). Enzyme inhibition assays indicated effective inhibition of α-glycosidase, AChE (IC50: 2.15 μg/mL), hCA I, and hCA II. Notably, AChE inhibition was stronger than the standard tacrine inhibitor (IC50: 8.82 μg/mL), suggesting neuroprotective potential. The observed bioactivities are attributed to synergistic effects of phenolic acids and flavonoids, including quercetin, luteolin, taxifolin, and resveratrol. These findings highlight Siran propolis as a promising natural antioxidant and enzyme inhibitor source with potential therapeutic applications and food formulations.

Purpose: We aimed to investigate structural changes in the hippocampus using automated segmentation techniques to evaluate the anatomy and function of the hippocampus in patients with West syndrome (WS). Methods: The study included 48 participants (24 with WS and 24 healthy controls) aged 0‐4 years. Automated segmentation methods were used to measure hippocampal volume and evaluate diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters such as fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD). Bonferroni correction was applied for multiple comparisons, setting the adjusted significance threshold at p < 0.0033. Results: Children with WS exhibited significantly reduced total hippocampal volume and diminished volumes in the CA2–CA3, CA4-dentate gyrus (CA4-DG), and SR-SL-SM regions compared to healthy controls (padj <0.0033). After correction, no significant differences were found in the CA1 and subiculum regions (padj >0.0033). Although initial comparisons between ongoing WS and seizure-controlled WS suggested increased volumes in several hippocampal regions in the seizure-controlled group, these differences did not remain significant after adjustment and must be interpreted with caution. Notably, patients with seizure-controlled WS displayed larger hippocampal volumes, higher FA, and lower MD values, indicating a possible link between seizure activity and structural alterations. Additionally, DTI analysis of the cingulum revealed lower FA and higher MD values in WS patients, suggesting compromised microstructural integrity. Conclusions: These findings emphasize the potential role of hippocampal alterations in the pathophysiology of WS and suggest that DTI parameters may serve as useful measures for monitoring disease progression and treatment response.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ2First evaluation and ecological risk of potentially toxic elements in the formations of Akçakale cave (Gümüşhane-NE-Türkiye)
Saydam Eker, Çiğdem; Külekçi, Gökhan; Uçak, Gül
In this study, the potential toxic element levels (PTEs) and adverse health effects of Akçakale cave formations were evaluated using geochemical parameters such as enrichment factor (EF), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (CF), ecological risk factor (Eri), potential ecological risk index (PERI), and non-carcinogenic hazard index (HI). Water does not pose a pollution risk, as the concentrations of potentially toxic elements in all samples are within the permissible limits for drinking water. According to the calculated geochemical parameters, all the samples were polluted with As, Co, Ni, Cu, V, and Pb. Ni, As, Cu, and Pb show very high ecological risk (PER > 320) in all samples, except Cu and Pb in T2T. The PERI values of the PTEs were more than 600 in all samples, indicating a very high potential ecological risk. The HI > 1 values for Co and As in all samples for both adults and children suggested potential non-carcinogenic health risks from exposure to these elements in the cave environment. The PTEs in the Akçakale cave formation were most likely linked to lithogenic, geogenic (Pb–Zn-Cu mineralization), and anthropogenic (agricultural activities) processes, per the findings of the data analysis using multivariate statistics (PCA and PCC). These data obtained are the first findings regarding the potential toxic element content of Akçakale cave.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1A multi-stage fusion deep learning framework merging local patterns with attention-driven contextual dependencies for cancer detection
Catal Reis, Hatice; Turk, Veysel
Cancer is a severe threat to public health. Early diagnosis of disease is critical, but the lack of experts in this field, the personal assessment process, the clinical workload, and the high level of similarity in disease classes make it difficult. In recent years, deep learning-based artificial intelligence models have shown promise, with the potential to increase diagnosis speed and accuracy. These models attract attention with their automatic learning and adaptation capabilities. In this study, the deep learning-based PADBSRNet model and the PADBSRNet-Vision Transformer (ViT) hybrid method are proposed for the detection of brain tumors and skin and lung cancers. PADBSRNet is a comprehensive deep neural network architecture that integrates separable and traditional convolution layers, multiple attention mechanisms, bidirectional recurrent neural networks, and cross-connections/multi-stage feature fusion strategies. This architecture offers significant advantages in terms of effectively extracting local-global, contextual features and accurately modeling long-term dependencies in image classification tasks. The second proposed approach developed a hybrid method that combines the advantages of the PADBSRNet model and the ViT model. Experimental analysis on medical datasets such as the Figshare Brain Tumor Dataset, IQ-OTH/NCCD Dataset, and Skin Cancer: Malignant vs. Benign Dataset has evaluated the proposed models' performances. According to the experimental results, the PADBSRNet model has shown successful performance with 95.24 %, 99.55 %, and 88.61 % accuracy rates, respectively. The experimental findings show that the proposed deep learning model can effectively learn the complex relationships and hidden patterns of cancer disease, thus producing applicable and effective results in cancer diagnosis.

Paksoy, Zahid; Ozturk Sarikaya, Sevim Beyza; Yumusak, Nihat
Ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury is a common pathology affecting the ovary. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Tarantula cubensis extract (TCE) on ovarian IR injury. Forty-two female rats were used and randomly divided into 7 groups: Control, Sham, IR, Ischemia+TCE+Reperfusion, TCE+IR, Ischemia+Ethanol+Reperfusion and Ethanol+IR. The control and sham groups did not receive any treatment. All other groups were subjected to 3 h of ischemia + 3 h of reperfusion. A single dose of TCE (0.2 ml Theranekron) was administered subcutaneously either before or after ischemia in the treatment groups. In the last 2 groups, ethanol was applied before or after ischemia. After reperfusion, blood samples were collected and analyzed for biochemical parameters. Additionally, the ovarian tissue was evaluated histopathologically and immunohistochemically. The IR group exhibited more marked hyperemia, hemorrhage, and necrosis. Both treatment groups showed histopathological improvement. Moreover, the recovery rate was greater in the animals given theranekron before ischemia. IR injury caused oxidative stress in the rats. However, Theranekron did not significantly reduce the MDA levels (p > 0.05). On the other hand, SOD levels were significantly increased in the treatment groups (p < 0.01). Compared to the control and sham groups, the IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α levels were very high in the IR group. Conversely, the immunoreactivity of these cytokines was further reduced in the animals given theranekron before ischemia. Our findings suggest that TCE may be beneficial in the treatment of ovarian IR damage, especially when Theranekron is given before ischemia.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ1ChatGPT-4 in Nursing Research: A Methodological Evaluation of Bias Risk in Randomized Controlled Trials
Tuncer, Metin; Tuncer, Gülsüm Zekiye
Background: Conducting bias assessments in systematic reviews is a time-consuming process that involves subjective judgments. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to perform these assessments can potentially save time and enhance consistency. Nevertheless, the efficacy of AI technologies in conducting bias assessments remains inadequately explored. Aim: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of ChatGPT-4o in assessing bias using the revised Cochrane RoB2 tool, focusing on randomized controlled trials in nursing. Methods: ChatGPT-4o was provided with the RoB2 assessment guide in the form of a PDF document and instructed to perform bias assessments for the 80 open-access RCTs included in the study. The results of the bias assessments conducted by ChatGPT-4o for each domain were then compared with those of the meta-analysis authors using Cohen's weighted kappa analysis. Results: Weighted Cohen's kappa values showed better agreement in bias in the measurement of the outcome (D4, 0.22) and bias arising from the randomization process (D1, 0.20), while negative values in bias due to missing outcome data (D3, −0.12) and bias in the selection of the reported result (D5, −0.09) indicated poor agreement. The highest accuracy was observed in D5 (0.81), and the lowest in D1 (0.60). F1 scores were highest in bias due to deviations from intended interventions (D2, 0.74) and lowest in D3 (0.00) and D5 (0.00). Specificity was higher in D5 (0.93) and D3 (0.82), while sensitivity and precision were low in these domains. Conclusions: The agreement between ChatGPT-4o and the meta-analysis studies in the same RCT assessments is generally low. This indicates that ChatGPT-4o requires substantial enhancements before it can be used as a reliable tool for bias risk assessments. Clinical Relevance: The AI–based tools have the potential to expedite bias assessment in systematic reviews. However, this study demonstrates that ChatGPT-4o, in its current form, lacks sufficient consistency, indicating that such tools should be integrated cautiously and used under continuous human oversight, particularly in evidence-based evaluations that inform clinical decision-making.

In this study, essential oil from the aerial parts of Gelasia sericea (Aucher ex DC.) Zaika, Sukhor. & N. Kilian was extracted via hydrodistillation using a Clevenger apparatus. GC-MS/FID analysis determined aldehydes (28.31%) as the dominant group, with eucalyptol (8.71%) as the main constituent. Antioxidant activities were exhibited using DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays, with the essential oil demonstrating relatively higher antioxidant properties. The essential oil also showed higher levels of bioactive components, including total antioxidant capacity (160.26 mg AA eq./100 mL), total phenolic content (21.57 mg GA eq./100 mL), and total flavonoid content (14.85 mg QE eq./100 mL). While G. sericea essential oil demonstrated some antioxidant activity, it was significantly lower compared to the reference standard ascorbic acid (AA). The antimicrobial results showed relatively higher antimicrobial activity compared to most bacterial and fungal strains, as evidenced by lower MIC and MBC values and larger inhibition zones. Nevertheless, chloramphenicol (CH) and nalidixic acid (NA) continually showed superior antimicrobial efficacy, with the lowest MIC and MBC values and the largest inhibition zones. The essential oil also demonstrated potent enzyme inhibitory activity, especially against CA-II, AChE, and BChE, with the lowest IC50 value observed for CA-II, highlighting its potential as a potent enzyme inhibitor. However, the essential oil exhibited comparatively greater inhibition against AChE, BChE and α-amylase but was less effective overall. These findings suggest that the G. sericea essential oil has important antioxidant potential and enzyme inhibitory activity, while the essential oil shows varying efficacy across different enzymes.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the mediation role of life engagement in resilience and trauma levels of individuals experiencing the earthquake on February 6, 2023 in the city of Kahramanmaraş in Türkiye. The sample of this descriptive and correlational study included 1406 individuals. The questionnaire data was obtained through Google Forms and other data collection tools were Socio-demographic Information Form, Trauma Level Determination Scale, Short Resilience Scale and Life Engagement Scale. To analyse the data, frequency (percentage, arithmetic mean) and correlation analyses were used. Depending on the findings of the study, the resilience and trauma levels were negatively correlated, whereas the resilience and life engagement levels were positively correlated. Furthermore, the life engagement levels were negatively correlated with trauma levels while they were positively correlated with resilience. It was found that the life engagement played an mediation role in resilience and trauma levels of individuals experiencing the earthquake in Kahramanmaraş, Türkiye. In this study, we found that the life engagement has an important role in resilience and trauma levels of individuals. We are of the opinion that the findings of this study might help researchers and conductors to plan and perform effective strategies for post-impact phase of an earthquake.

Aim: The aims of this study were to evaluate hand grip strength in young adults, to examine its relationship with anthropometric values, and to determine which values are predictive. Subject and methods: This prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted with 913 healthy young adults aged 18–30 years. A questionnaire form was administered in face-to-face interviews, and anthropometric measurements including height, body weight, waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), mid-upper arm circumference (MAC), neck circumference (NC), triceps skinfold thickness (TSF), and hand grip strength (kg) were performed for each participant. Results: Hand grip strength was significantly higher for men than for women (p < 0.001), and was also higher in obese and overweight people compared to underweight participants (p < 0.001). Hand grip strength was correlated with weight, height, body mass index, MAC, TSF, WC, and NC (p < 0.001). The predictive ability of anthropometric measurements in estimating hand grip strength was thus demonstrated in a large population of healthy young adults. Significant regression was found, with an R2 value of 0.556. Hand grip strength increased by 0.282 kg for each centimeter of height and by 0.135 kg for each centimeter of MAC. The hand grip strength of male participants was 0.424 kg greater than that of females. Height, MAC, TSF, and sex were significant predictors of hand grip strength. Conclusion: According to our results, variability in hand grip strength among healthy subjects can be explained by height, MAC, TSF, WC, HC, age, and sex. The estimation of hand grip strength could be established based on these demographic and anthropometric variables.
