Akay, Gamze; Koç, Elif Simay; Oğuzhan, Hatice
Background: Boys often experience significant fear and anxiety before the circumcision procedure, and postoperative pain is linked to increased fear and anxiety in children. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of mandala coloring on fear, anxiety, emotional symptoms and postoperative pain of circumcised children. Methods: This randomized controlled trial was conducted in the pediatric clinic of a state hospital in eastern Turkey. Children were divided into two groups using a computer program: Group 1 (control) included children with no intervention (n = 40), and Group 2 (mandala coloring) included children who received mandala coloring (n = 38). Statistical analyses were performed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to assess the normality of the data, the chi-squared test to compare categorical variables between groups, the paired samples t-test for within-group comparisons, the independent samples t-test for between-group comparisons, and mixed model repeated measures ANOVA (rANOVA) to evaluate the temporal changes in pain and anxiety scores across groups. Findings: Children's fear, anxiety, emotional symptom, and postoperative pain scores were similar in all groups before the nursing intervention, and the fear, anxiety, and emotional symptom scores of the mandala painting intervention group were statistically lower than the control group after the nur csing intervention. The pain scores of the children in the mandala coloring group were lower than the control group after surgery. Conclusion: Mandala coloring intervention can be used to reduce emotional symptoms, fear, anxiety and postoperative pain in children aged 6–12 years undergoing circumcision.

Psychoeducation after a traumatic event can help reduce negative effects by providing a cognitive framework for one’s experience. It can also enable trauma survivors to increase their ability to help coping. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of psychoeducation on hope, loneliness and depression in nursing students who experienced 6 February 2023 Turkey earthquake. The study, which was conducted in experimental design, included 40 students who experienced the February 6 earthquake. 20 students were assigned to the psychoeducation group and 20 students to the control group. Students in the psychoeducation group received six sessions of psychoeducation, while students in the control group were not intervened. ’Personal Information Form’, ‘Beck Hopelessness Scale’, ‘UCLA Loneliness Scale’ and ‘Beck Depression Scale’ were used to collect the data. Mean, standard deviation and percentage calculations, chi-square test and t test were used to analyze the data. Sociodemographic characteristics of the students in the psychoeducation and control groups were similar except for the place of residence (p > 0.05). It was determined that the mean score of the hope sub-dimension of the ’Beck Hopelessness Scale’ was statistically significantly higher in the control group (p < 0.05). It was determined that there was no statistically significant difference between the students in the psychoeducation and control groups in terms of hopelessness levels and mean scores of ‘UCLA Loneliness Scale’ and ‘Beck Depression Scale’ (p > 0.05). There was a statistically significant difference between the students in the psychoeducation and control groups in terms of depression levels (p < 0.05). In conclusion, psychoeducation was partially effective on hope and depression and not on loneliness in students who experienced the earthquake. Students in the psychoeducation group had lower levels of depression. It is recommended that students experiencing natural disasters such as earthquakes should be monitored by a specialized psychologist and the duration of psychoeducation should be regulated.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Maximizing phonation: impact of inspiratory muscle strengthening on vocal durations and pitch range
Yilmaz, Coşkun; Bostanci, Özgür; Eken, Özgür; Alkahtani, Rania; Aldhahi, Monira I.
Background: This study investigated the acute effects of inspiratory muscle warm-up (IWU) on vocal performance in singers. Proper vocal and respiratory warm-up can enhance vocal range, quality, and endurance. The aim was to determine whether IWU improves maximum phonation time and pitch range, contributing to better voice production efficiency (vocal efficiency) and reduced fatigue. Materials and methods: Singers were selected from the Samsun State Opera and the Ballet Directorate (n = 16). This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the acute effects. The singers in the control group (SC = 8) performed only one session of routine voice warm-up, and the experimental group (SE = 8) conducted an inspiratory muscle warm-up (IWU) of 2 sets, 30 times/set at 40% maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) in addition to routine voice warm-up. Subsequently, All participants were then required to perform pre- and post- pulmonary function tests, maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP), and voice recordings (note high pitch, note low pitch, high pitch durations and low pitch durations sustained with one breath, and maximum phonation duration). Results: All pulmonary function and muscle strength parameters improved in the SE group, with the highest increases in MIP (22.9%) and MEP (14.7%). No significant improvements were noted in the SC group (p > 0.05). The Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion showed that the SE group experienced less difficulty with their vocal performance after IWU (-11.6%, p = 0.006), while no significant change was observed in the SC group (p = 0.316). Both warm-up methods used in the study significantly affected the frequencies of high-pitch sounds (SE = 17.8%, SC = 10.9%, p = 0.003); however, the frequency of low-pitch sounds was not significantly affected (p = 0.437). IWU significantly affected the high-pitched note duration (p < 0.001; 32.17%), low-pitched note duration (p < 0.001; 27.11%), and maximum phonation time (p < 0.001; 21%), while routine voice warm-up did not significantly affect any parameter (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The combination of IWU with the general body and voice warm-up protocol can acutely improve vocal performance in terms of maximum phonation time, phonation times of the highest and lowest pitched sounds in a single breath, and vocal range levels.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Novel Sulfonylhydrazones With Sulfonate Ester Framework: Promising Dual Inhibitors of AChE and hCAs
Öztürk, Cansu; Balci, Neslihan; Aslan, Osman Nuri; Kalay, Erbay
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects millions of individuals worldwide. Treatment strategies for AD vary depending on cognitive and behavioral symptoms, with cholinergic replacement therapy using acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors being one of the primary approaches. Recent studies have also identified human carbonic anhydrases (hCAs) as significant therapeutic targets for AD, offering new opportunities for the development of innovative treatments. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors have been shown to prevent early mitochondrial damage and inhibit H2O2 production, thereby reducing amyloid plaque formation. Building on the promising potential of hydrazones particularly sulfonyl hydrazones as anticholinesterase agents, we synthesized 12 novel chlorine-substituted sulfonyl hydrazone compounds containing aryl sulfonate ester groups. These compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory effects on AChE, hCA I, and hCA II enzymes. The synthesized compounds exhibited low nanomolar inhibitory activity, with Ki values ranging from 9.58 ± 2.22 to 104.04 ± 23.82 nM for AChE, 9.12 ± 2.21 to 477.63 ± 218.52 nM for hCA I, and 17.54 ± 7.74 to 564.62 ± 213.98 nM for hCA II. Notably, compound 6 showed strong inhibitory activity against hCA I (Ki = 9.12 ± 2.21 nM; acetazolamide (AZA) = 26.54 ± 3.11 nM) and hCA II (Ki = 17.54 ± 7.74 nM; AZA = 21.73 ± 2.42 nM), whereas compound 4 exhibited superior AChE inhibition (Ki = 9.58 ± 2.22 nM; TAC = 23.12 ± 2.05 nM). The chemical structures of the synthesized compounds were characterized using advanced spectroscopic techniques, including FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ4A deep learning approach powered by GhostNet for skin cancer classification; [GhostNet tabanlı derin öğrenme yaklaşımı ile cilt kanseri sınıflandırması]
Almasani, Heba; Ture, Hayati
Skin cancer, especially melanoma, continues to cause a disproportionate percentage of cancer-related deaths despite its high curability when detected early. This work presents an efficient deep-learning system aimed at the binary classification of dermoscopic images as malignant or benign using the GhostNet family of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The publicly available ISIC-2019 dataset was used for training its extreme class imbalance was corrected using a hybrid Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique coupled with Edited Nearest Neighbours (SMOTE-ENN). End-to-end fine-tuning of three variants of GhostNet (V1, V2, V3) was performed with preprocessing, augmentation, and hyper-parameters kept constant to ensure a fair model-to-model comparison. Evaluation metrics used were accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and the area under the receiver-operating-characteristic curve (AUC). GhostNet V2, augmented with depth-wise attention, gave the strongest results: 95% accuracy, 94% malignant class recall, F1-score of 94.3%, and an AUC of 0.99. GhostNetV2 performed better than both the baseline V1 and V3 without having a parameter count that would prevent real-time inference on mobile hardware. These results of Accuracy, sensitivity, F1-score, AUC and recall show that, when combined with targeted imbalance correction, efficient architectures such as GhostNet are capable of dermatologist-level sensitivity without the computational requirements of heavier models, and thus are feasible for point-of-care or resource-constrained settings. It is complementary to our previous work with other CNNs, allowing model-to-model comparison directly.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ3Turkish Version of the Sense of Belonging in Nursing School Scale: Validity and Reliability for Nursing Students
Tuncer, Metin; Tuncer, Gülsüm Zekiye; Yalçınkaya, Turgay; İnce, Merve; Yücel, Şebnem Çınar; Khorshid, Leyla
Background: While a sense of belonging may be necessary for human motivation, the disruption of this sense of belonging among nurses can have implications for patient care and safety. Aim: This article was aimed at assessing the sense of belonging experienced by nursing students in three different settings (clinic, classroom, and student group) by conducting the validity and reliability of the Sense of Belonging in Nursing School (SBNS) scale, adapting it to the Turkish language and culture, and reporting the results. Methods: The study was conducted in a nursing faculty between March and July 2023. The study sample comprised 193 nursing students. We performed the content validity assessment of the 19-item SBNS scale after conducting a structural validity analysis using exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The Cronbach’s alpha and item-total score correlations were examined to assess the scale’s internal consistency. Results: The Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin measure of sampling adequacy for the SBNS instrument was 0.903, and the result of Bartlett’s test of sphericity was significant (χ² = 3182.764, p = 0.000), indicating that the scale was suitable for factor analysis. The eigenvalue analysis identified a four-factor structure explaining 76.74% of the total variance. These four factors were subsequently named as follows: (1) clinical compliance, (2) social belonging, (3) school support, and (4) clinical support. The goodness-of-fit values for the model obtained from the CFA were χ2/SD = 2.15, comparative fit index = 0.947, goodness-of-fit index = 0.852, normed fit index = 0.906, incremental fit index = 0.948, and root mean square error of approximation = 0.077, suggesting that the model fit was acceptable, and the four-factor structure was well distributed. The scale exhibited high internal consistency (α = 0.933). Discussion: The SBNS scale is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring the sense of belonging experienced by nursing students in three different environments. Further research is needed to establish its predictive validity. Conclusions and Implications for Nursing: This study was conducted, and there was no scale used in the Turkish literature to measure nursing students’ sense of school belonging; thus, it is the first in this sense.

Yılmaz, Hacı Ömer; Şahin, Kezban; Ayvaz, Hilal
Objective: Obesity may negatively affect the physical health and cognitive functions of individuals and delay their reaction time to stimuli. However, the association among obesity, cognitive functions, and reaction times is yet to be fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of obesity on cognitive functions and visual and auditory reaction times in adults. Methods: Data of 100 participants (50 obese and 50 normal) were analyzed in the study. Anthropometric parameters and 24-h dietary recall data were recorded. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to evaluate the cognitive functions, Simple Reaction Time Task (SRTT)-Visual and SRTT-Auditory were used to assess visual and auditory reaction times of the participants, respectively. Results: The mean MoCA score of the obese was significantly lower than normal (17.46 and 25.22, respectively; p < 0.001). In addition, the mean auditory (p < 0.001) and visual (p < 0.05) reaction times of obese were significantly longer than normal. Similarly, this condition was also observed for the fastest and lowest values of auditory and visual reaction times. Additionally, obesity caused a decrease in the MoCA score (β = -0.762; p < 0.001) and delayed visual (β = 0.423; p < 0.001) and auditory (β = 0.590; p < 0.001) reactions. The negative effect of obesity was maintained after controlling for potential factors (MoCA, β = -0.594; p < 0.001; SRTT-Auditory, β = 0.409; p < 0.01; SRTT-Visual, β = 0.330; p < 0.05). Conclusion: Obese participants showed worse cognitive, auditory and visual performance. Additional research will be necessary in the future to shed light on the fundamental mechanisms involved.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ4Evaluation of the Psychometric Properties of the Turkish Form of the Will-to-Live Scale in Older Adults
Kütük, B.
Abstract: The Will-to-Live (WTL) scale measures desire for life and life commitment across populations. However, psychometric evidence for a Turkish older adult WTL screening model is lacking. In this study, the WTL was first translated into Turkish using established procedures, followed by the collection of psychometric information on the Turkish form (WTL-T). Included in the study were community-dwelling older adults (aged 65–85 years) who could be considered representative of the older adult Turkish population, who were asked to complete the WTL scale, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, the Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale, the Geriatric Depression Scale, the Brief Resilient Coping Scale, as well as a single-item WTL and self-rated health. The exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses demonstrated an acceptable model fit of the WTL-T, yielding a single-factor model that explained 66.45% of the variance. Furthermore, the WTL-T was found to have high internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.865) and convergent validity was demonstrated by the strong positive correlations identified through the single-item WTL question (r = 0.810, p < 0.001). The moderate to high correlations of the scale with theoretically related measures supported its concurrent validity (r = –0.299 to 0.742, all p’s < 0.01). The evidence presented in the present study identifies the WTL-T as a concise, appropriate and psychometrically sound instrument for the assessment of WTL in older adults living in Turkey.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Self-Regulation of Eating Behaviors Among Young Women Nurses and Nursing Students: Its Relationship With Eating Habits
Tuncer, Gülsüm Zekiye; Tuncer, Metin
The primary aim of this study is to adapt the Self-Regulation of Eating Behavior Questionnaire (SREBQ) to the Turkish culture among young women nurses and nursing students. The secondary aim is to investigate the factors associated with self-regulation of eating behavior in this population. The sample consisted of 773 young women nurses and nursing students who were included in the study between June and July 2024. In accordance with the first aim of the study, the construct validity of the SREBQ instrument was confirmed through EFA. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the SREBQ was found to be 0.78. There were very low positive correlations between the SREBQ score and the SRS (r = 0.252) and TREQ-CR (r = 0.136) scores, as well as low negative correlations with the TREQ-EE (r = −0.355) and TREQ-UE (r = −0.406) scores (p < 0.001). The 5-item SREBQ has been found to be a valid and reliable instrument for the population of young women nurses and nursing students in the Turkish language. The results indicate that as self-regulation of eating behavior increases in this population, overall self-regulation skills improve, while disordered eating behaviors decrease.

Gürmeriç, Hüseyin Ender; Basaran, Burhan
In this study, data from 17 studies reporting the presence of microplastics in milk and dairy products in the literature were examined with a product-based systematic approach. In addition, geographical comparisons were made between different countries. In milk and dairy products, the concentration of microplastics has been reported to exhibit a broad range, extending from non-detectable levels to as high as 10,040 MPs per kilogram, contingent upon the specific product types. Milk powder (especially baby milk powder) stands out as the riskiest product group in terms of microplastic content. Although the sizes and colors of the detected microplastics vary significantly, the fiber form is generally predominant. While polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide and polyester are among the polymers frequently detected, high-temperature-resistant industrial polymers such as polytetrafluoroethylene, polysulfone, polyurethane were also encountered. In addition, the presence of some polymers (such polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane) that are toxicologically risky for human health was reported in the studies. In addition, the study evaluated the chemical, enzymatic and physical methods used for the separation and identification of MPs; the advantages and limitations of FT-IR, Raman and other analysis techniques were revealed. This study reveals that MP contamination in milk and dairy products is a multidimensional problem. The findings show that milk and dairy products are highly susceptible to plastic contamination at every stage of production.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2The Effect of Physical Activity on Anterior Segment Structures and the Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer: A Comparison of Elite Athletes and Sedentary Individuals
Deniz Genç, Çiğdem; Korkmaz Salkılıç, Esra; Anıl, Berna; Akdemir, Enes; Yılmaz, Coşkun; Yılmaz, Ali Kerim
Background and Objectives: The study aims to evaluate the effects of regular physical activity on ocular structures by comparing eye anterior segment structures and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) parameters between elite individual athletes and sedentary persons. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional observational study included 75 participants (33 female and 42 male) aged 18–32 years. Participants consisted of 33 elite individual athletes (66 eyes) aged 18–32 years and 42 sedentary individuals (84 eyes) aged 18–28 years. The elite athlete group consisted of participants who had trained ≥ 3 times per week for the past 5 years and had competition experience in tennis (n = 11), badminton (n = 8), and short/middle distance running (n = 14). Sedentary participants had not engaged in regular physical activity for the last 2 years. Anterior segment structures were measured with ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), RNFL parameters were measured with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), and intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured with a non-contact pneumotonometer. Results: When the anterior segment parameters were compared, a significance was found in the group effect (p = 0.021, (Formula presented.) = 0.036) in the TIA500 value, but the effects of side and gender were insignificant (p > 0.05). While the gender effect was found to be significant for the AOD500 (p = 0.030, (Formula presented.) = 0.032) and ARA500 (p = 0.019, (Formula presented.) = 0.038) variables, the group and side effects were statistically insignificant (p > 0.05). There was a significant difference in IOP values between sedentary individuals (15.82 ± 2.69) and athletes (14.61 ± 1.80) (p = 0.004, (Formula presented.) = 0.057). There was a significant difference between the right (15.71 ± 2.70) and left (14.87 ± 2.02) sides (p = 0.027, (Formula presented.) = 0.033). The effect of gender was not significant (p > 0.05). When the results were evaluated, a significant effect of the TEMPORAL side in RNFL parameters (p = 0.003, (Formula presented.) = 0.058) was observed. Correlations were seen between the anterior segment and RNFL parameters in both groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Athletes exhibited lower IOP compared with sedentary individuals, with similar RNFL parameters but distinct correlation patterns with anterior segment structures. These findings suggest that ocular parameters should be evaluated in an integrated manner and that physical activity may support ocular health by contributing to IOP reduction and potentially slowing the progression of eye diseases.

Background: Nutritional habits are a critical factor influencing the performance and recovery of professional athletes. Understanding how demographic variables affect nutrition-related attitudes is essential for developing targeted interventions. Objective: This study examined the nutritional attitudes of professional female volleyball players in Türkiye based on various demographic characteristics. Methods: The study included 386 licensed female volleyball players from the Turkish Women's Volleyball Super League, First League, and Second League. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire and the Attitude Scale for Healthy Nutrition. Normality was assessed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and skewness-kurtosis values. Statistical analyses included t-tests, ANOVA, LSD post-hoc tests, and partial correlation. Results: Significant differences in nutritional attitudes were found based on league level, smoking status, years of experience, and income level (p < 0.01). No significant differences were observed based on education level. Among the sub-dimensions, the malnutrition component showed no significant differences across most variables. Super League athletes scored significantly higher in nutritional knowledge and positive nutritional behaviors. Conclusion: The nutritional attitudes of professional volleyball players vary considerably according to key demographic factors. These findings highlight the importance of targeted nutrition education, particularly for lower-league athletes, to enhance performance and reduce disparities in nutritional knowledge.

Odaci, Hatice; Akdeniz, Burak; Türkkan, Tuğba
In today's world, where young adults face increasing psychological and social challenges, understanding the factors that influence loneliness has become more critical than ever. This study examines whether perceived self-efficacy mediates the relationship between parental acceptance and loneliness in university students. The study population consists of undergraduate students studying at universities affiliated with the Council of Higher Education in Türkiye. Data were collected with demographic information form created by the researchers, UCLA Loneliness Scale, Adult Parental Acceptance-Rejection Scale, Coping Self-Efficacy Scale. Independent samples t-test and one-way analysis of variance were used for comparisons between groups, and Pearson's correlation analysis and mediation analysis were used to analyze the relationships between variables. According to the results, the level of acceptance perceived by male students from their mothers was higher than that of female students. There is a significant negative relationship exists between loneliness levels and parental acceptance of university students. It was found that parental acceptance scores significantly predicted loneliness and coping self-efficacy scores. This study shows that self-efficacy has a partial mediating role in the relationship between parental acceptance and loneliness and that self-efficacy may create resistance against negative emotions. Identifying this relationship and potential mediating effects at an early stage is important for strengthening the family environment and promoting healthy child development. This study will contribute to the literature with new findings to identify protective factors and develop psychosocial interventions for young adults struggling with loneliness.

Demirağ, Hatice; Cin, Aynur; Hintistan, Sevilay
Objective: This study was conducted as a single-blind, randomized controlled parallel-group study with 50 elderly individuals to investigate the effect of foot bath on sleep quality. Methods: The data were collected using the “Elderly Information Form” and the “Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)” between 1 May 2022-1 July 2022 at a State Hospital in Gümüşhane province. The elderly in the foot bath group were given a foot bath with 41-42°C water for 20 minutes 50 minutes before normal sleep hours. No application was made to the control group except for the administration of data collection tools. The data were analyzed with Chi-square, Friedman, Wilcoxon Sign, and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: It was determined that at least one of the total PSQI measurements and median scores of all subcomponents obtained from the elderly in the foot bath group differed depending on time (P<.05). However, it was found that there was no statistically significant difference in the sleep latency (B2), sleep duration (B3), habitual sleep efficiency (B4) and sleep disturbance (B5) component measurements obtained from the elderly in the control group depending on time (P>.05). Again, All PSQI subcomponents and total PSQI scores, except for the subcomponent “Habitual Sleep Efficiency (C4)”, decreased throughout the application in the elderly in the foot bath group. Conclusion: As a result, a foot bath improved sleep quality in the elderly. In line with the findings from this study, it is recommended to compare the foot bath with multiple experimental groups for a longer period of time.

Çakmak, Seher; Uzun, Sevda; Demir Çam, Sevgi
This study aims to examine the burden of disease experienced by multiple sclerosis patients and to deeply examine the impact of the disease on sexual life. A phenomenological research design was used in this study. This qualitative research was conducted with 20 multiple sclerosis patients. Interviews were conducted individually and face-to-face. The data were analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis method. Two main themes (effects of the disease and sexual life) and five sub-themes (physical effects, mental effects, social effects, problems related to sexual life, sexual issues, and coping) were identified in the analysis of the data. As a result of the study, it was determined that the patients experienced serious physical, mental, and social problems due to multiple sclerosis, and their sexual lives were also negatively affected. Individuals experience significant issues related to their sexual life due to multiple sclerosis. Since multiple sclerosis is a multifaceted disease, it is thought that professional evaluation of sexuality in patients, diagnosis of sexual dysfunctions, and taking timely measures are of great importance to improve the quality of life of multiple sclerosis patients.
