Through the eyes of healthcare professionals: Compassion fatigue and earthquake stress coping strategies of healthcare professionals in the disaster region following the Kahramanmaras centered earthquakes: A case-control study

Emirza, Elif Güzide; Uzun, Sevda; Şenses, Medine

Background: Healthcare professionals serving in the earthquake zone may experience mental problems due to the traumatic events they witnessed. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of working in earthquake-affected areas on compassion fatigue and coping strategies for earthquake stress in healthcare professionals compared to a control group. Methods: This descriptive and correlational study was conducted in three provinces in the northern region of Türkiye. The sample of the study consisted of 146 healthcare professionals working in earthquake-affected regions and 143 healthcare professionals not working in earthquake-affected regions. Data were collected using the ‘Descriptive Information Form’, ‘Compassion Fatigue Short Scale (CF-SS)’, and ‘Coping with Earthquake Stress Scale (CESS)’. Descriptive statistics, t-test for independent samples, Pearson correlation analysis and binary logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Results: Statistically significant differences were found between healthcare professionals working in earthquake-affected regions and healthcare professionals not working in these regions in terms of CF-SS total scores, ‘occupational burnout’ sub-dimension mean scores and ‘seeking social support’ mean scores among CESS sub-dimension mean scores (p <.05). However, no statistically significant difference was found between the mean scores of ‘secondary trauma’ sub-dimension of CF-SS and total-CESS, ‘religious coping’, and ‘positive reappraisal’ (p >.05). A high and positive correlation (r =.805; r =.847; r =.847; r =.695, p <.001) was found between total CF-SS scores and total religious coping, positive reappraisal and seeking social support scores of the participants. In addition, working in the earthquake zone negatively affects positive reappraisal and positively affects seeking social support as a significant predictor (β =.081, OR = 0.922, p <.05; β =.111, OR = 1.117, p <.05). Conclusion: A significant positive relationship was observed between compassion fatigue and coping with earthquake stress. At the same time, it was determined that having worked in the regions affected by earthquakes had a strong positive effect on coping strategies with earthquake stress.

Investigation of perceived parental attitude in children exposed to sexual abuse: A case-control study

Bayrak, Nurten Gülsüm; Emirza, Elif Güzide; Uzun, Sevda

Background: The enduring impact of children being subjected to sexual abuse is characterized by lasting traumatic effects. Aims: This study aims to assess the influence of perceived parental attitudes on the incidence of sexual abuse in children who have experienced such abuse, comparing them with a control group. Methods: The research took place at the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) of a hospital in northern Turkey and in the pediatric outpatient clinics of the same institution. The study evaluated 101 children who were exposed to sexual abuse and 100 children who were not. Data collection took place between November 2022 and August 2023. The study employed a ‘Descriptive Information Form’ and the ‘Parental Attitude Scale’ for both case and control groups. The t-test for independent samples, descriptive statistics, and logistic regression analysis were used for data analysis. Results: Analysis of scores from the Parental Attitude Scale revealed significantly lower mean scores in acceptance-involvement and strictness-supervision in the case group (p <.05). The mean scores for ‘acceptance-involvement’ (X¯ = 22.82 ± 6.26, X¯ = 25.71 ± 3.89) were highest in the case and control groups. Neglectful attitude (38.6%) was more prevalent in the case group, while the control group exhibited a higher frequency of democratic attitude (37%). In terms of predictors, acceptance-involvement (OR = 1.091, p =.005) and maternal employment (OR = 4.410, p <.001) were identified as the most significant predictors of exposed to sexual abuse. The study’s Cronbach’s alpha value for the scale was α =.743. Conclusion: The study’s findings on parental attitudes suggest a potential connection between children’s exposure to sexual abuse and inadequate parental acceptance, involvement, supervision, and control.

Psychosocial problems experienced by intensive care nurses regarding sleep pattern within the scope of working conditions: A phenomenological study

Atasayar, Belgin Şen; Emirza, Elif Güzide; Uzun, Sevda

Background: Nurses working in intensive care units experience insomnia and accompanying psychosocial problems due to working conditions. Aim: This study explores with a phenomenological approach the psychosocial problems experienced by intensive care nurses regarding sleep patterns within the scope of working conditions. Study Design: In this phenomenological study, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 16 nurses working in the surgical intensive care unit of a state hospital in Türkiye. Criterion sampling method, one of the purposive sampling methods, was used to reach the sample group. Researchers' interviews continued until they reached data saturation. All interviews were recorded on a voice recorder after obtaining the necessary permissions from the nurses and then transcribed. The study data were evaluated using thematic analysis. The current manuscript was reported following the COREQ checklist. Results: Data analysis revealed three main themes (how working as an intensive care nurse changes sleep patterns, the relationship between shift work, work performance, patient care and how working as an intensive care nurse changes individual life and coping strategies) and nine subthemes (mental, physical, social, work performance, patient care, nutrition, family life, social life and coping). Conclusion: The study's findings revealed that nurses working in intensive care experienced psychosocial difficulties related to sleep patterns and had trouble coping. In particular, it was determined that sleep problems of intensive care nurses cause difficulties in family life, nutrition and social life. It is recommended that the number of personnel in workplaces be increased, overtime hours should be limited, and professional development and training on the importance of sleep for all nurses should be provided. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Nurses working in intensive care units may experience psychosocial problems due to working conditions, which may negatively change their coping skills. Therefore, organizing the working conditions of nurses positively changes their coping skills.
