Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of three different music-based interventions on anxiety and fatigue levels in patients undergoing hemodialysis, compared to a concurrent control group receiving standard care. Methods: This randomized controlled trial involved 64 patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis. They were randomly assigned to four equal groups (n = 16 each): live music, live ney sound therapy (using a traditional reed flute known for its soothing, breath-like tones), a music-repeating robotic parrot therapy (an interactive robotic parrot that repeats music or sounds provided by the patient), or a control group (no intervention). The experimental groups received 30-min sessions 3 days per week for 2 months. The “Beck Anxiety Scale” and “Fatigue Severity Scale” were used to measure anxiety and fatigue, respectively. Assessments were performed before the intervention, immediately after the 2-month intervention period, and at 2 months after the end of the intervention period. Results: Before the intervention, there were no significant differences in anxiety or fatigue scores across the four groups (p > 0.05). After the interventions, all three groups exposed to music therapy showed significant reductions in both anxiety and fatigue scores compared to the control group (p < 0.001). Conclusion: All three therapies were effective in managing anxiety and fatigue symptoms in hemodialysis patients. Among them, music-repeating robotic parrot therapy demonstrated the most superior and longest-lasting effects in reducing both anxiety and fatigue levels. Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT07238374.

The Effect of Parrot Therapy on During Venipuncture Pain in Chronic Patients

    Demirağ, Hatice; Tuç, Adile

Objective There are no randomized controlled trial (RCT) in the current literature comparing live, robotic, and visual animal-based therapies. This single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted to comparatively evaluate the effectiveness of live parrot, robotic parrot, and parrot picture therapies on pain during venipuncture in adults with chronic illness. Methods The study included 240 patients randomized into four groups. Groups interacted with live parrots, robotic parrots, or parrot pictures during venipuncture. The control group received no intervention. Pain levels were assessed before and after the procedure using the "Visual Analog Scale (VAS)." Analysis was performed using Chi-Square test, One-way ANOVA and paired samples t-test. Results There was no difference in pre-procedure pain scores between the groups (p ' .05). After the procedure, the VAS score for the live parrot group was 2.01 ± 1.35, for the robotic parrot group 2.03 ± 1.46, for the parrot picture group 2.08 ± 1.62, and for the control group 4.91 ± 1.88. Again, after the procedure, pain scores in all experimental groups were found to be significantly lower than in the control group (p ' .001). Live parrot therapy was found to be the most effective pet therapy, followed by robotic parrot and parrot picture therapy. The reduction in pain in the live parrot group was statistically more significant than in the picture group. Conclusion The research findings revealed that pet therapy applied during venipuncture, especially live animal interaction, may be a potentially effective, safe, and non-pharmacological method for reducing pain. Robotic animals, on the other hand, can be considered a promising alternative when the use of live animals is not possible. It is recommended that these distraction strategies be considered and integration into routine nursing practices be developed as part of patient-centered care.

Background: Pet therapy has both physiological and psychological effects on individuals with chronic diseases. However, to the best of our knowledge, no studies have examined the physiological and psychological effects of pet treatment in hemodialysis patients worldwide. Design: A randomized controlled study. Methods: The study was completed with 18 robotic cats, 18 Betta fish, and 18 control group patients. The data were collected at XXX State Hospital between May and September 2021 using data collection tools. Robotic pet treatment was applied to the robotic cat group for 20 min a week for two months during hemodialysis. The Betta fish group was allowed to keep Betta fish at home for two months, and they were followed for another two months. The data were evaluated in the Statistical Package for Social Sciences 23.0 package program. The study was registered on Clinical Trials (NCT05339711). Results: During robotic cat therapy, patients' loneliness and dialysis symptoms decreased, and happiness and treatment adherence to the end-stage renal disease (ESRD) increased; In the post-test follow-up, in the first measurement, the treatment adherence to the ESRD decreased, the loneliness and dialysis symptoms increased, the happiness did not change; In the second measurement of the post-test, happiness, and treatment adherence to ESRD decreased, loneliness and dialysis symptoms increased. During Betta fish therapy, patients' body mass index, happiness, and treatment adherence to ESRD increased, loneliness and dialysis symptoms decreased; in the first measurement, and loneliness, dialysis symptoms, body mass index, and treatment adherence to the ESRD increased; In the second measurement, loneliness, dialysis symptoms increased, body mass index and happiness decreased. Conclusions: The study revealed that Robotic cat and Betta fish therapies had positive physiological and psychological effects in hemodialysis patients, and these effects were different from each other.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2; βCoV), the causative agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), causes severe lower respiratory tract infections and acute respiratory failure syndrome (ARDS). Deaths due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic for more than a year are still seen worldwide. Therefore, vaccine trials have gained importance. The discovery of the genome and protein structure of SARS-CoV-2 in a short time allowed the development of nucleic acid-based vaccines (mRNA and DNA vaccines), vector vaccines, inactivated virus vaccines, protein-based vaccines, virus-like particle vaccines, and live attenuated virus vaccines. Many companies, universities, and institutes around the world continue to develop effective vaccines against SARS-CoV-2. In this review, the structural features, classification, genome, and intracellular entry of SARS-CoV-2 coronaviruses, stimulation of the immune system and immunity, COVID-19 vaccine types, and the latest status of clinical trials of these vaccines have been reviewed.

“COVID-19” disease is an infectious disease that was declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11, 2020 and is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The COVID-19 epidemic, which is spreading worldwide, causes morbidity and mortality increase day by day. Nurses who have the most contact with the patient play an important role in clinical management of the disease and prevention of infection. The purpose of this review is to provide information about the risk factors, transmission route, diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19, to identify clinical symptoms, and to discuss optimal nursing management in the clinical management of patients admitted to the hospital with COVID-19 infection.
