Taxifolin is a kind of flavanonol, whose biological ability. The objectives of this study were to investigate the antioxidants and antiradical activities of taxifolin by using different in vitro bioanalytical antioxidant methods including DMPD•+, ABTS•+, and DPPH•-scavenging effects, the total antioxidant influence, reducing capabilities, and Fe2+-chelating activities. Taxifolin demonstrated 81.02% inhibition of linoleic acid emulsion peroxidation at 30 μg/mL concentration. At the same concentration, standard antioxidants including trolox, α-tocopherol, BHT, and BHA exhibited inhibitions of linoleic acid emulsion as 88.57, 73.88, 94.29, and 90.12%, respectively. Also, taxifolin exhibited effective DMPD•+, ABTS•+, and DPPH•-scavenging effects, reducing capabilities, and Fe2+-chelating effects. The results obtained from this study clearly showed that taxifolin had marked antioxidant, reducing ability, radical scavenging and metal-chelating activities. Also, this study exhibits a scientific shore for the significant antioxidant activity of taxifolin and its structure-activity insight.

Investigation of structural and tribological properties of electroless Ni-B coated pure titanium

Çelik, Ilhan; Karakan, Mehmet; Bülbül, Ferhat

In the present study, the surface of commercial pure (Grade 2) titanium was coated with electroless Ni-B and, then, it was subjected to heat treatment for an hour at 400°. The surface morphology, microstructure and phase identification were analysed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. Wear behaviour characterisation was carried out using a ball-on-disc tribometer. The results of the analyses showed that the electroless Ni-B coating had a significantly amorphous structure in the as-deposited condition. It was also determined that the coating structure crystallised after the heat treatment and wear resistance of pure titanium increased after electroless Ni-B coating. Particularly, upon the heat treatment, it was observed that wear resistance and surface hardness of pure titanium considerably increased.

Subduction-related Late Cretaceous high-K volcanism in the Central Pontides orogenic belt: constraints on geodynamic implications

    Aydınçakır, Emre

Mineral chemistry, major and trace elements, 40Ar/39Ar age and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic data are presented for the Late Cretaceous Hamsilos volcanic rocks in the Central Pontides, Turkey. The Hamsilos volcanic rocks mainly consist of basalt, andesite and associated pyroclastics (volcanic breccia, vitric tuff and crystal tuff). They display shoshonitic and high-K calc-alkaline affinities. The shoshonitic rocks contain plagioclase, clinopyroxene, alkali feldspar, phlogopite, analcime, sanidine, olivine, apatite and titanomagnetite, whereas the high-K calc-alkaline rocks contain plagioclase, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, magnetite / titanomagnetite in microgranular porphyritic, hyalo-microlitic porphyritic and glomeroporphyritic matrix. Mineral chemistry data reveal that the pressure condition of the clinopyroxene crystallisation for the shoshonitic rocks are between 1.4 and 6.3 kbar corresponds to 6–18-km depth and the high-K calc-alkaline rocks are between 5 and 12 km. 40Ar/39Ar age data changing between 72 ± .5 Ma and 79.0 ± .3 Ma (Campanian) were determined for the Late Cretaceous Hamsilos volcanic rocks, contemporaneous with the subduction of the Neo-Tethyan Ocean beneath the Pontides. The studied volcanic rocks were enriched in the large-ion lithophile and light rare earth element contents, with pronounced depletion in the contents of high-field-strength elements. Chondrite-normalised rare earth element patterns (LaN/LuN = 6–17) show low to medium enrichment, indicating similar sources of the rock suite. Initial 87Sr/86Sr values vary between.70615 and.70796, whereas initial 143Nd/144Nd values change between.51228 and.51249. Initial 206Pb/204Pb values vary between 18.001 and 18.349, 207Pb/204Pb values between 15.611 and 15.629 and 208Pb/204Pb values between 37.839 and 38.427. The main solidification processes involved in the evolution of the volcanic rocks consist of fractional crystallisation, with minor amounts of crustal contamination ± magma mixing. According to geochemical evidence, the shoshonitic melts in the Hamsilos volcanic rocks were possibly derived from the low degree of partial melting of a subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM), while the high-K calc-alkaline melts were derived from relatively high degree of partial melting of SCLM that was enriched by fluids and/or sediments from a subduction of oceanic crust.

Determination of biological performance, dimensional stability, mechanical and thermal properties of wood-plastic composites produced from recycled chromated copper arsenate-treated wood

Tascioglu, Cihat; Tufan, Mursit; Yalcin, Mesut; Sen, Selim

The aim of this study was to investigate the dimensional stability, mechanical and biological performance and thermal degradation of wood-plastic composites made from high-density polyethylene and recycled wood treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA), a commonly used wood preservative chemical. Virgin pine wood samples were also prepared with and without a coupling agent and used as the control group. Samples of CCA-treated Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) with varying wood content were produced by adding different ratios of the coupling agent. The recycled CCA-treated wood-filled composites exhibited better flexural and tensile strength properties and dimensional stability than the control group, whilst their impact strength was less. Biological test values showed improved durability against termites and fungus with the recycled CCA-treated wood-filled composites. In addition, the leaching of heavy metals was significantly diminished when the coupling agent was utilized at a level of 5% (w/w), thus presenting a much lower impact on the environment.

Positive correlation between insulin resistance and iron overload-induced oxidative stress in patients with fanconi anemia (FA)- and non-FA-related bone marrow failure: The results of a multicenter study

Erduran, Erol; Bahadir, Aysenur; Albayrak, Davut; Aliyazicioglu, Yuksel; Buyukavci, Mustafa; Turan, Ibrahim

This study investigated the relationship between DNA, protein, and lipid oxidations and insulin resistance in patients with Fanconi anemia (FA)- and non-FA-related bone marrow failure. Sixteen patients with FA, 7 non-FA-related aplastic anemia, and 10 controls were included in the study. Fasting blood glucose, simultaneous insulin, hepcidin, ferritin, 8-hydroxy deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), protein carbonyls, malondialdehyde (MDA), and homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were investigated in the patients and controls. Diepoxybutane test-positive (DEB+) patients were diagnosed with FA, whereas DEB-patients were diagnosed as non-FA. 8-OHdG levels in both FA and non-FA patients were significantly higher than those in the controls (P =.001 and P =.005, respectively). Serum ferritin levels were also higher in FA and non-FA patients than in the controls (P =.0001 and P =.005, respectively). Insulin resistance (IR) was significantly higher in FA patients than in non-FA patients and controls (P =.005 and P =.015, respectively). Significant differences were observed between 8-OHdG, ferritin, and MDA levels in patients with or without IR (P =.009, P =.001, and P =.013, respectively). Moderate and strong relations of 44% and 85% were determined between IR and ferritin levels in patients with FA or non-FA (P =.08 and P =.014, respectively). FA and non-FA patients exhibited a tendency to IR. IR was related to ferritin levels, and ferritin levels were also correlated with oxidative stress. These findings suggest that the increased rate of IR in patients with FA and non-FA may derive from increased oxidative stress, which may in turn be due to elevated serum ferritin levels.

Series multiple tuned mass dampers for vibration control of high-speed railway bridges

    Kahya, V.; Araz, O.; Zingoni, A.

This paper presents Series Multiple Tuned Mass Dampers (STMDs) in vibration control of railway bridges under the passage of high-speed trains. In solution, the bridge is assumed as a Bernoulli-Euler beam, and the train is simulated as a series of moving forces with constant speed. A classic single TMD, and parallel Multiple TMD(MTMD) devices are also considered for the purpose of comparison. It is assumed that total absorber mass is the same for the devices considered. Optimum absorber parameters are obtained for the criterion based on the minimization of the maximum dynamic displacements of the beam at its midpoint. Control effectiveness and robustness of STMDs are discussed in comparison with other types of absorbers considered.

Use of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) powder and granules as aggregate replacement in concrete mixtures

    Bolat, Hakan; Erkus, Pinar

Concrete is one of the materials in which polymer wastes are utilized. Generally, these wastes are added at specific rates in scientific studies but an important problem of waste polymers is size irregularity. Even when consistent dosage rates are used, variations in polymer size can lead to variability in the physical and mechanical properties of the concrete produced. The aim of this study is to determine physical and mechanical properties of polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-containing concretes. In order to produce normal and high strength concretes, 10%, 20%, and 30% replacement ratios of PVC powder and granules by volume of aggregate are used. Slump, fresh and hardened densities, compressive strength, capillary water absorption, and abrasion were tested on all concrete types. As the PVC ratio increases, important changes are seen in all physical and mechanical concrete properties. The unit weights of the 10%, 20%, and 30% replacement PVC powder concretes are lower by ∼4%, 8%, and 13%, respectively, as compared to the reference mixtures, and the replacement PVC granule concretes are lower by ∼2%, 4%, and 7%. Compressive strength test results showed similar trends. As PVC replacement increases, the capillary water absorption decreases between 10% and 50%, and abrasion decreases between 27% and 77%.

Investigation of the quality and physical-geochemical characteristics of the drinking water in Gümüşhane (Turkey) city central

    Sipahi, Ferkan; Uslu, Sultan

The physical (turbidity, color, smell, taste, pH, and conductivity) and geochemical properties (Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Mn, Al, K, Cl−, HCO3 −, SO4 2−, Fe, Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cr) of the drinking water in Gümüşhane city center were determined. This city center constitutes the study area. The pH levels of the water samples ranged from 6.3 to 8.2, and their conductivities ranged between 240 and 900 μS. These findings were concordant with the drinking water standards of the Turkey Standard Institute and the World Health Organization. The hardness of the water samples in the study area was between 18.1 and 115.1 °Fr. These samples were classified as extremely hard, hard, and quite hard. In addition, an assessment using the criteria for Inland Surface Water Classification indicated that considering certain parameters (pH levels, amount of Na, SO4 2−, Fe, Mn, Al, Co, Ni, Cu, and Cr), the samples belonged to class I (high quality) water. When Cl− amount and conductivity were considered, the samples belonged to the first and second classes (less polluted) of water. The water in the study area was generally classified as carbonated and sulfated (Ca + Mg > Na + K) water classes. This water contained more weak acids than strong acids (HCO3 − + CO3 2− > Cl− + SO4 2−). The pH levels (6.3–8.2) of the water in the study area were unrelated to the varying concentrations of metals in the water. Elements such as Fe, Ni, Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cu increase in the water through the water–rock interaction in the area in which water rises or through the mixture of water with either mine or industrial wastes. In addition, several water samples belonged to an acceptable water class for drinking and usage.

The Effect of Dy Doping on the Magnetic Behavior of YBCO Superconductors

Öztürk, Ali; Doğan, Mustafa; Düzgün, İbrahim; Çelebi, Selahattin

The effect of dysprosium (Dy) doping on yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO) prepared by conventional solid-state reaction method has been investigated by means of XRD, AC susceptibility, and DC magnetization measurements. AC susceptibility measurements for sintered YBCO pellets have been performed as a function of temperatures at constant frequency and AC field amplitude in the absence of a DC bias field. DC magnetization measurements were done at 5, 20, and 77 K upon zero field cooling (ZFC) process. The magnetization measurements showed a paramagnetic behavior existing at high magnetic fields. The magnetic field dependence of critical current density of the samples has been estimated from DC magnetization data. The partial Dy substitution for Y on YBCO superconductors improves the bulk critical current density at high magnetic fields and at high-temperature regions (higher than 20 K).

Together with developing world, needs, charges and responsibilities also are changing. At the age we are in holdings, enterprises, corporations and organisations had become charged to do community oriented works now. In this regard, those mentioned units had transformed to state that they felt themselves responsible to give they took from people to people again. Corporations especially had tended towards social responsibility stusies to be able to addres their target groups before societ within the context of public relations activities and to establish a bridge in between. As change in time also cause change in expectations, now corporations had concentrated on social responsibility studies to be able to be approved in society and to continue their existing prestiges, instead of contenting teirselves just with commercial activities. Thus, also the importance of the concept called institutional social responsibility had increased in the century we live. Within this frame, to research efforts made in social responsibility studies executed in the area of “education” is forming the subject of this study. From the point of view of mentioned notion, a sample had been formed through coincidental choice of ten of institutions becoming prominent in society in this study. According to the research done through web sites of these ten institutions included the sample, examples to the studies institutions executed in educational area had been given by telling their institutional social responsibility understandings and policies, and their contents had been tried to be expressed. While existance of institutional social responsibility policies in six institutions included the study had been drawing attention, it had been determined that Business Bank of Turkey’s (Türkiye İş Bankası) and Turkcell’s institutional social responsibility activities accomplished in educational area were more different than the other eight institution and realized in areas more than one.

Cynarin is a derivative of hydroxycinnamic acid and it has biologically active functional groups constituent of some plants and food. We elucidated the antioxidant activity of cynarin by using different in vitro condition bioanalytical antioxidant assays like DMPD•+, ABTS•+, DPPH• and H2O2 scavenging effects, the total antioxidant influence, reducing capabilities, Fe2+ chelating and anticholinergic activities. Cynarin demonstrated 87.72% inhibition of linoleic acid lipid peroxidation at 30 g/mL concentration. Conversely, some standard antioxidants like trolox, tocopherol, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) exhibited inhibitions of 90.32, 75.26, 97.61, 87.30%, and opponent peroxidation of linoleic acid emulsion at the identical concentration, seriatim. Also, cynarin exhibited effective DMPD•+, ABTS•+, DPPH•, and H2O2 scavenging effects, reducing capabilities and Fe2+ chelating effects. On the contrary, IC50 and Ki parameters of cynarin for acetylcholinesterase enzyme inhibition were determined as 243.67 nM (r2: 0.9444) and 39.34 ± 13.88 nM, respectively. This study clearly showed that cynarin had marked antioxidant, anticholinergic, reducing ability, radical-scavenging, and metal-binding activities.

Structure and surface properties of Al2O3–TiO2 ceramic coated AZ31 magnesium alloy

    Çelik, İlhan

Magnesium and its alloys are the engineering materials which have the potential ability to be able to used widely particularly in the automotive, aerospace and in the biomedical sectors, especially thanks to their features such as lightness, specific strength that they have and biocompatibility. However, due to their poor wear resistance and corrosion resistance, the areas of usage are being restricted. This situation prevents Mg alloys to be used without any surface protection despite their good mechanical properties such as high strength/weight ratio. In this study, plasma spraying method is used to improve the poor corrosion resistance of AZ31 Mg alloy. Al2O3–13 wt% TiO2 (AT13) and Al2O3–40 wt% TiO2 (AT40) composite ceramic coatings were coated successfully on the surfaces of AZ31 Mg samples. The wear properties of the AT13 and AT40 coated samples were investigated for tribological applications. Surface morphology and microstructure of the duplex treated samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The microhardness value of the uncoated AZ31 Mg alloy is 40±3 HV0.1, while the microhardness values of the AT40 and AT13 coatings are enhanced to 800±39 HV0.1 and 1500±35 HV0.1, respectively.

Comparison of verona integron-borne metallo-β-lactamase (VIM) variants reveals differences in stability and inhibition profiles

Makena, Anne; Düzgün, Azer Ö.; Brem, Jürgen; McDonough, Michael A.; Rydzik, Anna M.; Abboud, Martine I.; Saral, Ayşegül; Çiçek, Ayşegül Č.; Sandalli, Cemal; Schofield, Christopher J.

Metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) are of increasing clinical significance; the development of clinically useful MBL inhibitors is challenged by the rapid evolution of variant MBLs. The Verona integron-borne metallo-β-lactamase (VIM) enzymes are among the most widely distributed MBLs, with>40 VIM variants having been reported. We report on the crystallographic analysis of VIM-5 and comparison of biochemical and biophysical properties of VIM-1, VIM-2, VIM-4, VIM-5, and VIM-38. Recombinant VIM variants were produced and purified, and their secondary structure and thermal stabilities were investigated by circular dichroism analyses. Steady-state kinetic analyses with a representative panel of β-lactam substrates were carried out to compare the catalytic efficiencies of the VIM variants. Furthermore, a set of metalloenzyme inhibitors were screened to compare their effects on the different VIM variants. The results reveal only small variations in the kinetic parameters of the VIM variants but substantial differences in their thermal stabilities and inhibition profiles. Overall, these results support the proposal that protein stability may be a factor in MBL evolution and highlight the importance of screening MBL variants during inhibitor development programs.

Assessment of sessile oak (quercus petraea L.) leaf as bioindicator for exploration geochemistry

    Vural, A.

The element contents of sessile oak (Quercus petraea L.) leaves which grow on hydrothermally altered area with high element contents were studied at Gümüshane and its near vicinity. The aim of this study is to determine threshold element contents of Q. petraea L. leaves growing on the area. For this purpose, oak leave samples collected were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry for concentrations of some elements which were the group of most common trace elements in exploration geochemistry studies. The assessment of the element contents of the oak leaf is based on the descriptive statistics and computations of threshold values of leaves depending on statistical parameters and average element contents of the plants growing on lands in normal background values for the elements. According to Q-Q (normal quantile-quantile) plots, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests etc., all the elements, do not pass normality tests. Because of that, threshold values of the elements in leaves of oak were computed by median+median absolute deviation (MAD) and median+2MAD used in raw values for the elements. The data revealed that concentration levels of the examined elements in the leaves in the study area were determined as above and/or exceeded the upper limit of the normal range than in leaf of oak (Q. petraea L.) which grows on lands with normal elements background. Therefore, it is concluded that leaves of Q. petraea L. can be used as bioindicator in exploration geochemistry, especially for base metal ore deposits.

Comparison of local geoid height surfaces, in the province of Trabzon

Karaaslan, Özge; Tanır Kayıkçı, Emine; Aşık, Yusuf

In this study, the estimation of a local geoid model in the area of Trabzon by using geometric methods is presented. The geometric method used in this study interpolates Global Positioning System-derived ellipsoidal and orthometric heights by using the weighted average interpolation, polynomial surface regression, and multiquadratic interpolation. The orthometric and ellipsoidal heights measured at 600 C3 order control stations within a reference benchmark network covering the entire area of Trabzon in Turkey were used in this study. From the existing orthometric and ellipsoidal heights at control stations, the geoid heights were determined. Control stations were divided into two sets, namely, “reference stations” and “testing stations,” to test the estimated geoid height surface. The three methods are compared from a practical point of view by using the descriptive statistics of the root mean square error, mean absolute error, maximum error, and minimum error of the geoid height residuals.

Influences of seasonal alterations on the burning characteristics of impregnated and surface treated chestnut (Castanea sativa mill ) wood

Yasar, S. Sadiye; Fidan, Muhammed Said; Yasar, Mehmet; Atar, Musa; Alkan, Elif

Wood material is generally preferred due to its resilience against earthquakes, aesthetic properties, and its warmth as well as being natural. One of the major problems of employing this natural and breathable product is its ease of combustibility. Despite this adverse characteristic, its high resistance against burning and its ability to maintain its weight bearing characteristics until the very end does not lead to sudden collapses as is seen in steel and concrete systems. Treating wood with impregnating materials in order to improve its resistance against burning is an improved safety measure for the prevention of ignition. This study investigate seasonal effects on the ignition characteristics of chestnut wood samples impregnated using either Tanalith-E or Wolmanit-CB as detailed in ASTM-D 1413-76 and surface-treated using water-based or synthetic varnish as detailed in ASTM-D 3023- 88. The temperature of burning process was the highest in the investigated samples, in those impregnated with Wolmanit-CB and those that were treated with water-based varnish. The results of the study indicated that weight loss was lower during winter (84.59 %), for samples that were impregnated using Wolmanit-CB (84.46 %) and in those that were treated with water-based varnish (84.18 %). On the other hand, the O2 content was determined to be the highest and the CO content the lowest in winter samples that were impregnated using Wolmanit-CB and treated with synthetic varnish.
