Reading comprehension, Mathematics self-efficacy perception, and Mathematics attitude as correlates of students’ non-routine Mathematics problem-solving skills in Turkey

Öztürk, Mesut; Akkan, Yaşar; Kaplan, Abdullah

Literature that investigates the factors affecting problem-solving evaluates the cognitive and affective components, such as reading comprehension, metacognition, Mathematics anxiety, Mathematics attitude and Mathematics self-efficacy. Recently, studies have shown that Mathematics attitude and Mathematics self-efficacy as affective factors, and reading comprehension as a cognitive factor could play a crucial role in the problem-solving of middle school students. This study investigated the influence of reading comprehension skill, Mathematics self-efficacy perception and Mathematics attitude on non-routine Mathematics problem-solving skills. It is hypothesized that non-routine problem-solving skills are related to reading comprehension skills, Mathematics self-efficacy perception and Mathematics attitudes. To achieve this aim, a reading comprehension skill test, a Mathematics self-efficacy perception scale, a Mathematics attitude scale and a non-routine problem-solving skill test were applied. The instruments were completed by 362 middle school students. A correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship of variables on non-routine problem-solving skills, and the predictive effects of the predictor variables on non-routine Mathematics problem-solving skills were examined by hierarchical regression analysis. The analysis also showed that for middle-school students’ non-routine Mathematics problem-solving skills, all related factors–reading comprehension, Mathematics self-efficacy perception and Mathematics attitude were significant. Reading comprehension skills and Mathematics self-efficacy perception significantly predicted problem-solving skills, and both predictors explained a total of 22% of the total variance.

Öztürk, Mesut; Akkan, Yaşar; Kaplan, Abdullah

This case study aims to examine the elementary school student teachers’ process of making basic mathematical proofs in terms of their cognition and arguments which they use. In this study, 89 voluntary first graders in an elementary teacher department are divided into three groups according to their basic mathematics midterm scores: (1) high, (2) medium and (3) low achievement. Two students one of which male and the other one is female are randomly selected from each group (6 in total). Data is collected through activity card and thinking aloud protocol. On the activity card, two propositions are given to the students about the topic of sets and they are asked to prove these propositions by thinking aloud. For the analysis of the data, descriptive analysis method, which is based on the analysis of the collected qualitative data in accordance with certain previously formed categories, is used. In order to examine the cognitive processes of the primary school teaching students in the process of making proof, this study uses the cognitive stages of formal expression with the concrete development, symbolization and actions in the development of the mental world of mathematics, developed by Tall (2004) and explained in detail by Tall and Mejia-Ramos (2010). In order to examine the arguments with which students justify their evidences, Toulmin’s (1958) stages of argument production in evidence making are applied. The results of this study indicate that the students use the cognitive structures of embodiment, symbolization and formal expression together with assertion, presentation, verification, and refutation of limitations.

Students understanding of mathematics using from prototypical examples: Analyze in linear algebra

    Aydin, Sinan; Akkan, Yaşar

Mathematical objects are ʼnatural objects’ for the practical mind. Definitions and theories can only describe them, not create or construct them. A mathematical term is interpreted through its denotation as representing a collection of particular objects for the theoretical mind. So, theoretical and practical modes of thinking differ in the manner in which they constitute the meanings of words. Thinking in terms of prototypical examples, rather than definitions, became an obstacle to our students’ understanding the notion of linear transformation. In the course, linear transformations were defined as transformations of vector spaces which conserve linear combinations. The obstacle was revealed in the students’ attempts ‘linear extension problem’: given a transformation of a basis, to construct a linear transformation with those values on the basis. In the experimental course, the problem was not formulated in such general terms. It was restricted to two dimensions, and the students were not asked to ‘linearly extend a transformation from a basis to the whole plane’ but to assume the existence of such an extension and find some missing information about it. In this study we are discussing students understanding of mathematical concepts by means of linear transformation in linear algebra.

The effects of using learning objects in two different settings

Çakiroǧlu, Ünal; Baki, Adnan; Akkan, Yaşar

The study compared the effects of Learning Objects (LOs) within different applications; in classroom and inextracurricular activities. So in this study, firstly a Learning Object Repository (LOR) has been designed inparallel with 9th grade school mathematics curriculum. One of the two treatment groups was named as"classroom group" (n=24) used LOs with the guidance of the teacher during lessons in a computer lab, anothergroup named as "project group" (n=26) used LOs at home with the aim of preparing projects and assignments.Students in both groups used LOs during 11 weeks. A pre-test and post-test quasi-experimental design was used.Test results are compared in different learning domains (sets, numbers, relations and functions). In addition theinterviews with the teacher and the observations inside the class were taken into account for revealing thereasons about the change on academic achievements. The results of the study about students' academicachievements showed that; LOs use in classroom activities were more effective than LOs use in extracurricularactivities if sets, numbers, relations, functions and operations domains are considered together. Nevertheless thisstudy supported the idea of "LOs can be used in both in classroom activities and in extracurricular activities".
