- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Comparing Physics Textbooks in Terms of Assessment and Evaluation Tools
Takaoglu, Zeynep Baskan
Assessment and evaluation instruments provide teachers the opportunity of shaping education in the beginning, contributing to education during the process and evaluating education at the end of the process. Textbooks, on the other hand, are resources that present the aforementioned contributions to teachers at first hand. Thus, the study aims to compare the distribution of assessment and evaluation instruments in the physics textbooks being used in the academic year of 2011-2012 and 2016-2017 according to units, settlement within units and types of assessment instruments that are used. For that purpose, 9, 10, 11 and 12th grade textbooks being used in physics lessons in the academic year of 2011-2012 and 2016-2017 were examined via document analysis method. As a result of the study, it was determined that the highest number of assessment instruments in physics textbooks from two different years was encountered in the unit of force and motion. The reason for this unit having higher number of questions could be associated with higher number of mathematical operations in the unit intended for allowing students to overcome their mathematical deficiencies by practicing such questions. It was observed that the number of questions was increased especially in the books being used in the academic year of 2016-2017 and alternative assessment instruments were fewer than traditional assessment instruments. Traditional assessment instruments are still used very frequently in the textbooks, which proves the effect of traditional approaches in assessment and evaluation. Another reason for this condition is that a result-oriented evaluation is used in the university entrance exam. In the light of these results, it is suggested to make the university exam student-centered rather than making an arrangement in textbooks.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Energy concept understanding of high school students: A cross-grade study
Takaoğlu, Zeynep Başkan
Energy is a difficult concept to be understood by students of all levels. Thus, the aim of the study is to determine how high school students at different levels perceive the energy and related concepts. In line with this purpose, 173 students in total of which 57 ones of the 9th grade, 94 ones of the 10th grade and 22 ones of the 11th grade participated in the study in which developmental research method of descriptive research design has been conducted. Four open-ended questions about energy and related concepts have been asked to the students in the study. As a result of the study, it is concluded that the students use energy instead of work, power, repulsion and pulling concepts and they consider energy as a feature specific to living creatures and moving situations. The potential and kinetic energy types are most expressed ones. The students frequently give examples from renewable and non-renewable energy types and they classify them accordingly. It is also concluded that they don’t have enough information about conservation of energy. It is thought that this misconception among the students emerges because energy and related concepts are taught them disconnected in different lessons of different disciplines and they do not understand preconceptions about energy and related notions. It is considered that the concept networks, concept maps, and conceptual change texts will help to relate energy concepts in students' minds.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Comparative analysis of mathematical knowledge in physics textbooks
Takaoğlu, Zeynep Başkan
When different disciplines that physics lesson is related are examined, it is seen that mathematics becomes prominent as one of the most used fields. Physics textbooks are the most significant resources to clarify this relationship. Therefore, in this study, it is aimed to analyze the involvement of mathematical knowledge in physics textbooks used during 2011-2012 and 2016-2017 academic year in Turkey and to evaluate them according to mathematics subject distribution. In line with this aim, 9 th , 10 th , 11 th , and 12 th -grade textbooks used in physics lessons during 2011-2012 and 2016-2017 academic years are examined through document analysis method. According to the research results, it is found that mathematical knowledge is mostly located in Force and Movement chapters in both physics textbooks belonging to two different years. The involvement of mathematical knowledge in the chapters can result from the fact that Force and Movement chapters are the most suitable chapters for daily practices of mathematics. Besides, it occurs that the most used mathematical knowledge is the category of numbers and operations. This is because of the fact that basic level knowledge is used more because all mathematical knowledge is based on numbers and four operations. In this respect, that mathematical knowledge involved in physics textbooks is very excessive stands as the most significant evidence for that there is a strong connection between physics and mathematics.

In this study, we describe vocational school students' practices and perceptions of online learning based on interviews and observations. First, we identify student characteristics within online classes. Then, we report student perceptions of online lectures. Finally, we summarize our recommendations to improve the online teaching. The methodology used in this study was qualitative data-collection techniques to obtain vocational school student views on online education and educational processes. For this purpose, two stages of data collection were used in this study these were one-on-one open-ended interviews and think-aloud observation. According to data analysis from this study, communication between students and teachers has a basic effect on shaping students' perceptions and approach to online learning. Also, they have some negative ideas of using and implementations of technology in lectures. Included in this finding is that the meaning assigned by students to any technological material used in lectures is directly connected with the way this material is implemented. Another important finding is that planning of course, assessment and curriculum plays basic role in student's concentrate on lectures and success in online learning. We investigated only a few of the possible relationships between perception of the online environment, the technological materials used in lectures, students' approach to online learning, and students' perceptions of this learning way. Although Web resources and community were mentioned in this study, they may play a more effective role in student online learning than was analyzed in this study. Some additional factors that may effect student perceptions needed to be investigated are the link between perception and outcome, faculty use and knowledge, faculty perceptions and training. - MakaleYalnız künye2012The role of group education on quality of life in patients with a stoma
Altuntas, Y.E.; Kement, M.; Gezen, C.; Eker, H.H.; Aydin, H.; Sahin, F.; Okkabaz, N.; Oncel, M.
Stoma education has been traditionally given in a one-to-one setting. Since 2007, daily group education programmes were organised for stoma patients and their relatives by our stoma therapy unit. The programmes included lectures on stoma and stoma care, and social activities in which patients shared their experiences with each other. Patients were also encouraged to expand interaction with each other and organise future social events. A total of 72 patients [44 (61.1%) male with a mean (±SD) age of 56.8 ± 13.6 years] with an ileostomy (n= 51, 70.8%), a colostomy (n= 18, 25.0%) or a urostomy (n= 3, 4.2%) were included in the study. Patients were asked to answer a survey (SF-36) face-to-face before the initiation of the programme, which was repeated 3 months later via telephone call. The comparison of pre-education and post-education SF-36 scores revealed a statistically significant improvement in all 8-scale profiles, but not in vitality scale, and both psychometrically-based and mental health summary measures. Analyses disclosed that married patients and those who were living at rural districts seem to have the most improvement in life quality particularly in bodily pain, general health and role-emotional scales and mental health summary measure. In our opinion, group educations may be beneficial for stoma patients, and stoma therapy units may consider organising similar activities.
