Aydin, Aydanur; Gürsoy, Ayla
Background: – Following surgery, women with breast cancer (BC) frequently experience emotional and physiological negative consequences. Objective: – To evaluate the effect of a nurse-led mobile app (NL-Mapp) intervention on quality of life (QoL) in patients after surgery for BC. Methods: – This single-center, 12-month, nonrandomized controlled trial, with 2 parallel groups, represents the final stage of 3-step research. In this study, women were assigned to either the intervention (n = 45) or control (n = 45) group. The intervention group participated in the NL-Mapp, whereas participants in the control group received standard care. The main outcomes were measured using the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy—Breast at 3 time points (baseline and 1 and 12 months after the intervention). Clinical Trial number: NCT06505538 Results: – The intervention participants reported significant improvement in physical well-being, emotional well-being, and the BC-specific subscale compared with the control group at the 1-month postsurgery mark. Equally noteworthy, at the 1-year follow-up, consistent improvements were observed across all QoL subscale scores for the intervention group, except for the BC-specific subscale for additional concerns. Conclusion: – Our study revealed a notable enhancement in the QoL among postoperative women with BC who utilized the NL-Mapp. This program emerges as an effective intervention for providing short-term and longer-term supportive care to women affected by BC, leading to tangible improvements in their QoL. Implication for Nursing: – The study’s findings offer valuable evidence supporting the integration of mobile health services into clinical and transitional nursing care.

Objective This research aimed to adapt Positive Attitudes Toward and Perceived Importance of Wearable Display Technology (PATPIWDT) as an Effective Learning Tool Among Nursing Students into Turkish and to examine the validity and reliability of its translation. Methods This methodological study included 698 nursing students recruited via convenience sampling. Construct validity was evaluated using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) with the Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimation method. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's Alpha and McDonald's Omega coefficients. Results The model demonstrated excellent fit according to the confirmatory factor analysis results. The CFA results for the Positive Attitudes subscale indicated a good model fit (CMIN/DF = 4.79, GFI = 0.93, CFI = 0.97, RMSEA = 0.07, SRMR = 0.03). For the Perceived Importance subscale, the single-factor structure showed acceptable fit indices (CMIN/DF = 5.82, GFI = 0.98, SRMR = 0.03). As a result of examining the standardized loadings of the items, it was seen that the item factor loadings were 0.40 and above, indicating sufficient factor loading. Cronbach's alpha coefficients were 0.91 for the positive attitudes subscale and 0.84 for the perceived importance subscale. The respondents also demonstrated an above-average overall score, with a mean of 3.40 (SD = 0.69).Conclusion The Turkish version of the scale provides a dependable measure of nursing students' positive attitudes toward wearable screens and how important they consider this technology for future educational use.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Nurse-led support impact via a mobile app for breast cancer patients after surgery: a quasi-experimental study (step 2)
Aydin, Aydanur; Gürsoy, Ayla
Breast cancer patients may experience some health issues following surgery. Training patients about self-care plays a vital role in managing these symptoms. Mobile applications are a contemporary and appropriate approach to support patients about the potential symptoms following breast cancer surgery. This quasi-experimental study aimed to assess the impact of nurse-led support mobile application (NL-Mapp) delivered on breast cancer patients after surgery. Ninety participants were recruited, with 45 assigned to the intervention group and 45 to the control group. Subjects in the intervention group received NL-Mapp in addition to routine care, while those in the control group received only routine care over four weeks. The intervention included educational content on the postoperative period of breast cancer. Outcomes were assessed at baseline (M0), before discharge (M1), and one month after surgery (M2). The intervention group patients had significantly improved pain, affected shoulder functions, and anxiety owing to the effects of group, time, and group-time interaction. Body image and sexual adjustment were enhanced based on time and group-time interaction effects. During the follow-up period, experimental group patients experienced an improvement in body image and sexual adjustment, while those in the control group showed a decrease. This suggests that NL-Mapp may play a significant role in training breast cancer patients to manage their symptoms after surgery.

Uslu, Gonca Hanedan; Aydin, Aydanur; Gürsoy, Ayla
Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the frequency of acute and late toxicities, as well as changes in the quality of life (QOL) for breast cancer patients following radiotherapy (RT). Materials and Methods: A total of 108 breast cancer women were recruited for this prospective study. Data were collected at various intervals; prior to, and 1, 3, 6 months, and 1 year after radiation therapy. The primary outcomes were toxicity radiation therapy oncology group/European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) criteria. Our secondary outcome was QOL, measured using EORTC QLQ-C30 and Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale. We employed Friedman's two-way analysis to evaluate the changes in QOL over the course of 1 year. Results: The early toxicities that are most commonly experienced include pharyngeal, skin, and mucous membrane toxicity. Late toxicities frequently involve skin and submucosal toxicity. To measure patient functionality, all functional subscale scores except for the patient's emotional state increased over time compared to pre-RT. Symptoms of the patients, which were included in the QOL symptom scale, decreased during the follow-up period, except for fatigue; however, changes in pain, insomnia, and loss of appetite did not significantly change. We identified the analogous symptom profiles in Edmonton. Although patients' overall health scores declined in the 1 st and 3 rd months after radiotherapy (RT), they rebounded at 6 and 12 months. Conclusion: For breast cancer patients, RT did not adversely affect functional capacity or exacerbate symptoms, but persistent fatigue did increase during the observation period. Health-care professionals ought to devise strategies to assist patients with skin toxicity and fatigue.

Introduction:Clinical practices constitute an important part of nursing education and students are expected to gain the ability to plan patient care during nursing education.Aim:It aimed to construct North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) nursing diagnoses in nursing students' patient care plans according to the Functional Health Patterns model and to evaluate them according to the Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC) and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) classification systems. Methods:The descriptive study's population included 198 second-year nursing students from a university. Students' care plans were used as a data gathering form, and 176 care plans were included in the research. The data was gathered from functional health patterns, NIC, and NOC system questionnaires. Results:Nursing diagnoses were listed as infection risk (88.6%), fall risk (79.5%), and bleeding (56.8%). Nursing diagnoses belonging to sexuality-reproductive, coping-stress tolerance, and value-belief sub-categories of functional health patterns could not be reached from the care plans. Conclusion:There is a need for classification methods to objectively evaluate nursing practices, make quantifiable contributions to care, and improve the profession's scientific underpinnings. It is hoped that evidence-based care can be provided by raising pupils' knowledge of classification systems.

Background: Human and technology factors in healthcare can lead to errors that threaten human life. A strong patient safety culture in hospitals may be linked to better patient outcomes. Because of the potential for mistakes in surgical departments, surgical nurses are critical to establishing and maintaining a patient safety culture. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the patient safety culture perceptions of surgical nurses. Methods: This descriptive study was performed with 206 nurses working in the surgical clinics and operating rooms of 1 university hospital, 2 public hospitals, and 1 private hospital. A “Questionnaire” and the “Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture” were used for data collection. The data were analyzed using mean, number, and percentage values, 1-way analysis of variance, Tukey Honestly Significant Difference (HSD), and chi-square tests. Results: The study revealed that surgical nurses’ patient safety culture perception was at a medium level. The highest mean rate of positive responses in The Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture came from “Teamwork within units” and the lowest mean rate of positive answers came from the “Non-punitive response to errors” subdimension. In addition, 85.7% of the surgical nurses did not report any errors in the previous 1 year, and nurses who had been working for ≥11 years submitted more error reports (P = .001). Conclusion: Nurses’ patient safety culture perception was at a medium level. Recommendations for improving patient safety culture should include on-the-job training programs and improvements in employees’ working conditions.

Aydin, Aydanur; Gürsoy, Ayla; Karal, Hasan
The use of mobile applications is widespread in patient monitoring or education today. This study aims to describe the design and development process of a mobile app that supports patient self-care after breast cancer surgery. We used the ADDIE model to develop and test the mobile app. ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) is a systematic approach based on a standard instructional design model for creating training materials. The model consists of five phases, each with its own set of steps. Once the steps within each phase are completed, the model progresses to the next phase, ultimately resulting in a “usable” product. Different team collaborations were established within each phase, and support was obtained from multiple experts during the design process. Thanks to this model, the information that patients need was transformed into a technological product. This article, which explains the stages of the product design process for mobile applications, provides information that may be helpful to researchers working on similar products.

Augmented reality and virtual reality are some of the innovative products found in the healthcare industry. The use of these products in the hospital environment is becoming widespread today. The use of these methods can contribute to changing the diagnosis or treatment experiences that cause individuals to experience negative emotions with these products with different areas of use. In addition, it is predicted that both methods can produce effective results in the fields of health education in individuals, developing desired behavior in health management, preparing and disseminating programs for patient information and behavioral changes. It has been determined that these technologies, which produce effective results in the management of stress and anxiety, have similar results in the operating room. The article discusses the results of using virtual and augmented reality technologies for different purposes in healthcare. The information discussed is expected to raise awareness of the usage areas of the technologies in question and to shed light on studies for different areas of use.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Understanding Nursing Students’ Experience Through Digital Storytelling
Aydin, Aydanur; Gürsoy, Ayla; Tatli, Zeynep
Objective: The aim of this study was to explore both the student-created digital storytelling and the views of peer sharing of digital\rstorytelling that reflect the clinical experiences of nursing students. Methods: The study employed an explorative qualitative\rdesign. The data were collected with a questionnaire containing the findings related to the process of digital story formation and\rSWOT analysis. After peer sharing, the effect of the digital storytelling on the clinical process was determined with a semistructured interview form. The study follows the COREQ guidelines for qualitative studies. Results: The findings showed that that\rthe student-created digital storytelling was insufficient hardware, interactive and triggering way of communication. While the study\ralso revealed that they had a lack of deeper thinking and product creation had a positive effect on self-esteem. Conclusion: Studentcreated digital storytelling seems to be effective in conveying the clinical experiences. Considering the fact that the acquired\rhardware contributes to a desired level of learning, it can be said that digital stories are the right tools for transferring sharing\rsubjects. In addition, it can be said that an environment should be created for the students to become aware of their weaknesses and\rthreats. In this context, it can be stated that the information obtained from the peer sharing of students contributed to both\rprofessional life and individual equipment during the study. The sharing of different clinical settings with students with the help of\ra technological tool makes the students feel more comfortable in the clinic. The digital story is a method that can be used by young\rpeople of similar ages, both in terms of students preparing their own experiences and being a technological product.

Aydin, Aydanur; Gürsoy, Ayla
AIM: This study was carried out to determine women's knowledge about lymphedema precautions and their practice status. The sample of this descriptive and correlationally designed study included 107 women who underwent surgery. METHOD: This descriptive study's data were collected using a questionnaire form developed by the researcher. The data were structured on a 3-point Likert-typescale.The one-way analysis of variance, correlations, and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test were used in the statistical analysis. RESULTS: Three-quarters of the women knew that they should do arm exercises, keep the arm above the heart level while resting, and that blood pressure should not be measured, and jewelry not be worn. However, it was found that the percentage of women who did not know that the arm circumference should be measured at regular intervals or how to evaluate the arm circumference measurements and what to do in case of an injury was the same. It was determined that the precautions that the majority of women took in measuring lymphedema consisted of not measuring blood pressure, not wearing tight jewelry, and wearing an appropriate bra. CONCLUSION: It is thought that patients should be informed about the development of lymphedema after breast cancer surgery because their compliance with taking the precautions will be important in reducing the incidence, degree, and effects of lymphedema.
- MakaleYalnız künye2017Nothing is more important than my partner's health: Turkish men's perspectives on partner's appearance after mastectomy and alopecia
Gürsoy, Ayla; Koçan, Sema; Aktuğ, Cemile
Purposes The aim of this study was to acquire a deeper understanding of male experiences on the emotional and social impact of their partners’ mastectomy and chemotherapy-induced alopecia. Methods A purposive sample of 16 males whose partners had undergone mastectomy and alopecia due to chemotherapy was chosen. The data were collected through a semi-structured interview method. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of tape-recorded interviews was employed. Results Two main themes emerged from the data: facing the changes and my wife and I at present. Male partners were affected differently by the change in the physical appearance of their female partners. Our study participants said it was a difficult experience to see their partners for the first time after the surgery, but they emphasized that it was more important that their partners were healthy than the fact that they did not have a breast and hair. They also said they did not know how to behave towards their partners after surgery and/or chemotherapy. Nevertheless, they felt that the disease process of their partners had strengthened their bond and had not negatively influenced their relationship with others. Conclusions The changes in the partners’ physical appearance after mastectomy and chemotherapy affected males differently in psychological, emotional and social terms. Since nurses working in this field are in contact with patients during all phases of treatment and care, it would be positive and beneficial to plan nursing interventions that give emotional support for male partners of patients with breast cancer.
