Background: Human and technology factors in healthcare can lead to errors that threaten human life. A strong patient safety culture in hospitals may be linked to better patient outcomes. Because of the potential for mistakes in surgical departments, surgical nurses are critical to establishing and maintaining a patient safety culture. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the patient safety culture perceptions of surgical nurses. Methods: This descriptive study was performed with 206 nurses working in the surgical clinics and operating rooms of 1 university hospital, 2 public hospitals, and 1 private hospital. A “Questionnaire” and the “Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture” were used for data collection. The data were analyzed using mean, number, and percentage values, 1-way analysis of variance, Tukey Honestly Significant Difference (HSD), and chi-square tests. Results: The study revealed that surgical nurses’ patient safety culture perception was at a medium level. The highest mean rate of positive responses in The Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture came from “Teamwork within units” and the lowest mean rate of positive answers came from the “Non-punitive response to errors” subdimension. In addition, 85.7% of the surgical nurses did not report any errors in the previous 1 year, and nurses who had been working for ≥11 years submitted more error reports (P = .001). Conclusion: Nurses’ patient safety culture perception was at a medium level. Recommendations for improving patient safety culture should include on-the-job training programs and improvements in employees’ working conditions.

Objective: This study was conducted in a descriptive design type to determine the privacy awareness of nursing students and associated factors. Material and Methods: The sample of this descriptive study consisted of 490 nursing students studying in Gümüşhane University Health Sciences Faculty Nursing Department and Recep Tayyip Erdogan University Health Sciences Faculty Nursing Department. The data were collected with the questionnaire developed by the researchers and the Patient Privacy Scale. To evaluate the data, continuous variables were expressed as mean, standard deviation, median (25th-75th percentile), and categorical variables as numbers (percent). A comparison of variables that did not show normal distribution between groups was evaluated by the Mann-Whitney U test, KruskalWallis, Post-Hoc Tukey test and the relationship between numerical variables was evaluated by Spearman correlation analysis. Results: The study revealed that gender, place of residence, and education on privacy were the factors affecting privacy awareness. The reasons for the violation of privacy were determined as "careless work of nurses", "heavy workload of nurses", "environmental deficiencies", and "emergencies". The privacy scale scores of the students who chose 'emergencies' as the factor causing privacy violation were found significantly high in the confidentiality of private life (p=0.021), sexual privacy (p=0.014), physical privacy (p=0.039), ensuring a favorable environment (p=0.014), and privacy scale scores (p=0.007). Conclusion: It was found that the students had high scores on privacy, and patient privacy was affected by the students’ level of knowledge about gender, privacy, and place of residence. We suggest that training for privacy practices should be repeated at regular intervals when students start the profession.

Low back pain due to the effects of lumbar disc herniation is a common complaint of patients who often subsequently seek help from medical professionals. It is also a significant health problem which is quite difficult to treat. This descriptive study was conducted to determine nonmedical methods used by patients with lumbar disc herniation to relieve low back pain; the patients' intensity of low back pain when they were admitted to the hospital was also explored. Ninety-two patients with lumbar disc herniation participated in this study, which was carried out at a university hospital in northeastern Turkey. Data were collected using a patient information form and the visual analog scale (VAS). When the patients were admitted to hospital, their mean VAS score was 6.56 ± 2.45. The study results showed that as a first choice nearly all of the patients (94.6%) with lumbar disc herniation preferred consulting with their physicians before to obtain relief for low back pain. However, in addition to seeing their physician, more than one-half of these patients (57.6%) also used nonmedical methods. The primary nonmedical methods were hot/cold compresses, wrapping various substances on the back, and herbal preparations. An increase in pain was noted by 17.0% of patients after using nonmedical methods. Findings indicated that more than two-thirds of patients experienced either no change or an increase in pain after using nonmedical methods to find relief.
