Worry about Climate Change of Outdoor Recreation Participants: A Case Study in Türkiye

Aslan, Ramazan; Köçer, Musab Süleyman; Mizrak, And Sefa

Anthropogenic climate change (ACC) is considered to be one of the biggest threats to humanity in this century, with severe direct or indirect impacts on people’s lives. Such a significant threat causes serious concern, which can motivate low-level proenvironmental behavior and lead to serious health problems at high levels. Therefore, determining the level of this concern is crucial. Outdoor recreation participants, who are constantly in contact with nature, can closely witness the effects of ACC due to these interactions. Therefore, evaluating their ACC worry is essential. In this study, the aim was to determine the ACC worry levels of outdoor recreation participants. The research data were collected through an online survey from a sample reached through convenience sampling method throughout Türkiye. The data were analyzed using analysis of moment structures (AMOS) and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software. The relationship between independent variables and ACC concern was revealed through ordinal logistic regression. The research found that the participants had a high level of concern about ACC, with a score of 3.50. It was also determined that this level of concern was influenced by variables such as the type of outdoor recreation, the duration of participation in outdoor recreation, and exposure to the effects of ACC. Considering that ACC can motivate proenvironmental behaviors, the research suggests that outdoor recreational participants with high levels of concern about ACC should not be ignored in the adaptation process.

Aslan, Ramazan; Şahinöz, Saime; Şahinöz, Turgut

Background: Emergency medical staff working in pre-hospital (PH-staff) may encounter mass casualty incident (MCI) events. In these events these medical personnel should perform triage. The objective of this study is to determine the skill and knowledge levels of PH-staff about Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment (START) triage. Methods: With this cross-sectional, observational study we analyzed data from 127 PH-staff. Data was collected with the survey tool (response rate = 74.7%). Kruskal-Wallis H Test, Mann-Whitney U Test, and Spearman's Correlation analyzes were used in the data analysis by means of SPSS Software. Results: Of the participants, 63% were men, the median age was 24 years, 88 PH-staff (69.3%) intervened in MCI events, and 37 PH-staff (29.1%) applied START triage. The skill score was 60% and the knowledge score was 72.5%. There was a weak positive correlation between knowledge and skill scores (r = 0.337, p < 0.01). The knowledge level of the emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics was higher than those from the other professions. Conclusions: The triage knowledge and skill levels of the PH-staff were not low contrary to the expectations. The triage knowledge and skill levels of professions that did not have pre-hospital training such as paramedics and EMTs were low.

Adaptation of hurricane risk perception scale to earthquake risk perception and determining the factors affecting women's earthquake risk perception

Mızrak, Sefa; Özdemir, Ahmet; Aslan, Ramazan

Worldwide studies show that gender is an important variable affecting disaster risk perception and that women have high levels of disaster risk perception. The objective of this study is to investigate women’s earthquake risk perception as well as the factors that may help predict it. The data of the study were collected from 463 women living in Kocaeli (Turkey) by survey method. The study, which employed ordinary logistic regression analysis, analysed whether the same dependent variable was predicted by different independent variables in five models. Many of the women who participated in the research reported that they were more sensitive to earthquakes. The items with the highest mean among women's affective and cognitive risk perception factors are the items that measure fear and financial perception, respectively. Education and age significantly help predict women’s earthquake risk perception. Living in dread of earthquakes and being depressed and worried for future generations make women feel more sensitive. This study has showed that all the underlying factors affecting women's disaster risk perception should be understood more deeply. It is thought that the results of the study will contribute to studies related to disaster management, risk perception, and women.

Disaster Risk Perception of University Students

    Mızrak, Sefa; Aslan, Ramazan

Stakeholders responsible for disaster management need to understand students' disaster risk perception in order to increase community resilience. The aim of this study was to develop a scale to determine disaster risk perception of university students on campus and to investigate the disaster risk perception of the students of Gümüşhane University in Turkey. The data of the study were collected from 617 students and analyzed by means of SPSS and AMOS programs. Descriptive statistics, factor analysis, Mann–Whitney U test, Kruskal–Wallis H test, and structural equation model were applied. Consequently, a valid and reliable scale consisting of four factors (exposure, anxiety, effect, and uncontrollable) was obtained. According to the students, rockfall was most likely to occur on campus. Gender and type of school had a significant effect on disaster risk perception, while disaster experience, disaster education, disaster volunteer, and class level did not have a significant effect on disaster risk perception. Students with chronic illness had significantly higher perceptions of the uncontrollable. The structural equation model showed that exposure, effect, and uncontrollable were significant and positive predictors of anxiety.

Investigation of the Effectiveness of First Aid Course in a Public Education Center

    Şahin, Meral; Aslan, Ramazan

First aid is defined as the initial care provided for an acute illness or injury and the first care. It was determined that 38% of deaths with conscious and adequate first aid could be prevented at the scene. Training of the public on first aid causes significant improvements in the mortality and injury rates. Public education centers have an important place in the education of the public and are important in reaching first aid education. In this study, it was aimed to determine the effectiveness level of the 18-hour first aid training given in March 2019 at the Center for Public Education of the province of Giresun. For this purpose, three separate tests were applied to the trainees; before, after and a month after the training. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 22 package statistical program. Non-parametric statistics were used due to the lack of parametric assumptions. It can be said that having previously received first aid training has a long-term increase in the level of first aid knowledge. When the test scores were examined, it was found that the post-training test score increased significantly. Similarly, the test result after one month was found to be close to this value. The first aid training given in the Public Education Center caused a long-term information change in the participants. The level of knowledge of all participants increased. First aid training given in Training Centers should be expanded.
