Correlation of bilateral and ipsilateral strength ratios with balance in female taekwondo athletes

Yilmaz, Ali Kerim; Yilmaz, Coskun; Karaduman, Emre; Mayda, Muhammet Hakan; Erail, Serhat; Bostanci, Ozgur; Kabadayi, Menderes

This study aimed to analyze preferred leg (PLs) and non-preferred leg (NPLs) isokinetic knee strength, lateral asymmetry ratios and to examine their correlation with static balance. Sixteen female taekwondo (TKD) athletes voluntarily participated in the study. Knee isokinetic extension (Ex) and flexion (Flx) strength were measured in concentric / concentric (Con / Con) contractions at angular velocities of 60 degrees/s, 180 degrees/s, and 240 degrees/s. Ipsilateral hamstring / quadriceps (H/Q) and bilateral (H/H and Q/Q) ratios were calculated. Static balances were determined by taking the center of body pressure in X (COPX) and Y (COPY) axis. Paired sample t-test and Pearson correlation tests were used in statistical analysis. When the isokinetic knee strength was examined, it was found that 60 degrees/s angular velocity parameter was significantly different in Flx phase while 180 degrees/s and 240 degrees/s angular velocities were found to be significantly different in Ex phase in favor of PLs. There was no significance in bilateral and ipsilateral strength ratios of all angular velocities. There was a significant correlation between 240 degrees/s HQ and COPX in terms of ipsilateral asymmetry ratios whereas a significant correlation was found between 60 degrees/s HH and COPX in terms of bilateral asymmetry ratios. It was found that there were differences in strength between PL and NPLs, but no asymmetry was observed. There was no high level of correlation between lateral asymmetry ratios and balance in female TKD practitioners.

Upper extremity arterial thromboembolism in a patient with severe COVID-19 pneumonia: A case report

Bilge, Aysegul; Karasoy, Ismail; Neziroglu, Elif; Güner, Yesim

Although novel coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19) primarily affects the respiratory system, it can affect multiple organ systems, leading to serious complications, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and multiple organ failure. Nearly 20 to 55% of patients with COVID-19 experience coagulation disorders that cause high mortality in line with the severity of the clinical picture. Thromboembolism can be observed in both venous and arterial systems. The vast majority of thromboembolic events are associated with the venous system and are often observed as pulmonary embolism. Arterial thromboembolisms often involve the arteries in the lower extremities, followed by those in the upper extremities. Herein, we report a rare case of COVID-19 pneumonia whose left arm was amputated at the forearm level after arterial thromboembolism in the left upper extremity. This case report is valuable, as it is the first reported case of upper extremity arterial thromboembolism in Turkey, as well as the only case in the literature in which the patient underwent four surgical interventions and is still alive.

Investigation of the Cytotoxic Effect of Ethyl Pyruvate on Various Cancer Cell Lines

Ayazoglu Demir, Elif; Demir, Selim; Turan, Ibrahim

Ethyl pyruvate (EP) is a simple aliphatic ester derived from pyruvic acid which is an endogenous metabolite. Although various studies have investigated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of EP, there has been only limited research into the cytotoxic effect of EP on cancer cells. The aim of this study was to determine the cytotoxic effects of EP on cells representing common cancer types. EP was purchased commercially and intermediate stock solutions were prepared with phosphate buffer saline. The cytotoxic effect of EP on human melanoma (VMM917), cervix (HeLa), breast (MCF-7), lung (A549), liver (HepG2), colon (WiDr) cancer and normal fibroblast (BJ) cells was determined using the MTT assay. Cisplatin was used as a positive control in cytotoxicity experiments. The results showed that EP exhibits selective cytotoxic effect on VMM917 (10.1-fold) and HeLa (3.04-fold) cells compared to BJ cells. This study shows for the first time that EP has a highly selective cytotoxic effect, especially on melanoma and cervix cancer cells. The mechanism of this effect needs to be elucidated by more extensive studies.

Does evaluation of tumor volume or/both origination site better guide to optimal surgery for inverted papilloma?

Sahin, Muammer Melih; Yilmaz, Metin; Zorlu, Mehmet Ekrem; Göcek, Mehmet; Düzlü, Mehmet; Sayar, Erolcan; Ceylan, Alper

Introduction: Sinonasal inverted papilloma is noted for its high rate of recurrence. Staging systems aid to reduce recurrence and avoid excessive surgeries by guiding the selection of the optimal surgical approach. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of different endoscopic approaches in inverted papilloma by assessing tumor origin site and tumor volume. Methods: Krouse classification system that is based on tumor volume was used for staging; furthermore, tumor origin sites were grouped as lateral nasal wall, medial wall and other walls of maxillary sinus. The main treatment method for all patients was endoscopic sinus surgery. Endoscopic extended middle meatal antrostomy, endoscopic Caldwell-Luc and endoscopic medial maxillectomy were the additional surgery types performed in different combinations. Results: Fifty-five patients (42 male) with a mean 54.9 +/- 14.4 years of age were included. 37 patients were diagnosed with advanced stage inverted papilloma (67.2 %). Recurrence was observed in 12 patients (21.8 %). In early stage lateral nasal wall origination, no recurrence was observed in the simple tumor resection group (0/10). In early stage medial wall origination, no recurrence was observed in the extended middle meatal antrostomy group (0/8). In advanced stage medial wall origination, the recurrence rates of extended middle meatal antrostomy, extended middle meatal antrostomy + endoscopic Caldwell- Luc and endoscopic medial maxillectomy were 100.0 %, 53.8 % and 13.6 %, respectively (p =0.002). In advanced stage other walls of maxillary sinus origination, recurrence rates of extended middle meatal antrostomy + endoscopic Caldwell-Luc and endoscopic medial maxillectomy were 20 % and 16.6 %, respectively (p =0.887). Conclusion: Tumor origin site, tumor stage and surgery types show an impact on recurrence. Despite the fact that tumor origin site singly could lead to appropriate selection of the surgery type in most cases, tumor stage carries substantial importance in selection of surgery type for sinonasal-inverted papilloma. An operation plan regarding both tumor volume and tumor origin site may aid surgeons in selecting optimal endoscopic surgical method to avoid recurrence or excessive surgeries. In vitro Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Activities of Extracts of Endemic Tanacetum erzincanense Together with Phenolic Content by LC-ESI-QTOF-MS

Yapıcı, İsmail; Altay, Ahmet; Öztürk Sarıkaya, Beyza; Korkmaz, Mustafa; Atila, Alptuğ; Gülçin, İlhami; Köksal, Ekrem

In this study, phenolic composition, and in vitro biological activities of ethyl acetate (EAE) and methanol (ME) extracts obtained from the aerial parts of endemic Tanacetum erzincanense were investigated. Total phenolic and flavonoid content of the extracts were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu and aluminum chloride colorimetric methods, respectively. Antioxidant capacity of the extracts was evaluated over radical scavenging (DPPH and ABTS) and metal ion reducing power (FRAP and CUPRAC) tests. Individual phenolic compounds in ME was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-QTOF/MS). Cell inhibitory potential of the extracts was tested against colorectal adenocarcinoma (HT-29), breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7), and hepatocarcinoma (HepG2) cells by 2,3-bis(2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide (XTT) assay. The results showed that ME contains higher TPC (64.4 mg GAE/g) and TFC (62.2 mg QE/g) than those of EAE (41.5 mg GAE/g and 40.0 mg QE/g). LC-ESI-QTOF/MS analysis revealed that ME is rich in phenolic compounds, namely, chlorogenic acid, apigenin, quercetin, luteolin, and diosmetin. Antioxidant assay results indicated that ME possess stronger activity than EAE and a power that competes with synthetic antioxidants. XTT assay results demonstrated that although both extracts displayed a considerable cytotoxicity against the tested cancer cell lines in a time and dose-dependent manner, ME expressed its selective inhibitory action towards MCF-7 cells with an IC50 value of 20.4 μg/mL for 72 h. These results may serve as a basis for further in vivo studies to examine the potential applications of T. erzincanense in food and pharmaceutical industries.

Sajedi, Heidar; Bas, Mustafa; Aydın, Elif

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of different warm-up protocols (deep feelings, massage, dynamic traction) on different levels of blood lactate and anaerobic power of athlete students. The present study was quasi-experimental, with pre and post-test design and a control group and also three experimental groups. After announcing, 36 students who have had at least three years of professional sports experience were chosen among qualified students and they were set randomly in four groups of deep feelings, massage, dynamic traction, and control. Wingate test was used to measure anaerobic power. The 894E Monark performed the test Ergo medic as a Wingate test. The blood lactate of the participants of each group were measured in separate sessions using the German Scott Lactometer (using hand blood sample). We used two methods of petrissage and testament in the massage group. In the deep feelings group, the 11+ protocol designed by FIFA to improve performance and prevent player injury was used to warm up and five major muscles (Quadriceps femoris muscle, Hamstring, Hip flexor muscle, Hip Extensor muscle, Ankle Extensor) were stretched. The results show that there was a significant difference between the results of an anaerobic power test and blood lactate in those four groups. Based on the Tuki test and attention to the mean of post-test records compared to the pre-test, the two groups of dynamic traction and deep feelings compared to the control group had significantly welled performance in anaerobic power and blood lactate (P<0/05) and there was no significant difference in the massage group compared to the control group (P>0/05). As a result, it can be said that all three methods of warming up including dynamic traction, massage, deep feelings improve the performance of the participants in the anaerobic power and blood lactate test compared to the control group and performing the students of deep feelings and dynamic traction group in terms of anaerobic power and blood lactate is better than massage group.

Evaluating the chemical and metal contamination of commercial raki, a grape-based alcoholic beverage from turkey

    Menevseoglu, Ahmed; Cabaroglu, Turgut

Turkish Raki is one of the most consumed alcoholic beverages in Turkey. The chemical and metal contamination of alcoholic beverages is a threat to human health and lowers the quality of the product. Ethyl carbamate and furfural are carcinogenic to animals, and have been classified as Group 2A and 3 agents respectively by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Factors, such as raw materials, process time and storage, affect metal concentrations in beverages. Limits for chemicals and metals in Raki have not yet been established by the Turkish agency. The present study aimed to evaluate the chemical and metal contamination of commercial Turkish Raki. Thirty-seven different types of Turkish Raki were purchased from local markets in Turkey. Ethyl carbamate (EC) and furfural (FR) levels were measured by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS). Arsenic, copper, lead, and zinc levels were measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). None of the Raki samples contained EC. Furfural was not detected in commercial Raki samples but only in illegal Raki samples. Ethanol and methanol levels complied with Turkish regulation. Our data shows that commercial Raki from Turkey was contaminated by very low amounts of arsenic (<LOD-0.02 mg/L), copper (0.05-0.41 mg/L), lead (< LOD- 0.03 mg/L) and zinc (0.01-0.39 mg/L).

Demirag, Hatice; Kulakaç, Nurşen; Hintistan, Sevilay; Çilingir, Dilek

Objective: This study aims to determine the effects of cachexia, causing major problems in the world and Turkey, on self-care agency and quality of life in cancer patients. Methods: The population of this cross-sectional and relationship-seeking study consisted of cancer patients in Turkey from April 1 to April 20, 2021. Using the snowball sampling method, 174 patients were sampled. 'Patient Information Form,' 'The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer C30 Cancer Quality of Life Scale,' and 'Exercise of Self-Care Agency Scale' were used as data collection tools. Results: In the study, 52 patients (29.9%) were found to have cachexia. Function, general well-being, symptom (except insomnia), and self-care agency, which are subdimensions of the quality-of-life scale, were found to be significantly lower in patients with cachexia than patients without cachexia (P < 0.001). It was determined that there was a significant negative correlation between the cachexia status of the patients and the five basic functions in the functional scale (physical, role, emotional, cognitive, and social function), general well-being, and self-care agency, and there was a significant positive correlation between the cachexia status of the patients and the symptom scale (P < 0.001). According to the results of multiple linear regression analysis, it was found that the factor that significantly affected the cachexia status of the patients was their self-care agency (P < 0.001). Conclusions: It was determined that cachexia caused significantly lower self-care agency and quality of life in cancer patients. Furthermore, quality of life was related to self-care agency.

Global stability of Susceptible Diabetes Complication (SDC) model in discrete time

    Şi̇Şman, Şeyma; Merdan, Mehmet

In this study, the mathematical model (DC) of diabetes disease is discussed. This model divides people into (D) uncomplicated and (C) complex diabetics two. In addition, diabetes is a disease known to be caused by genetic and environmental factors, and this factor is one of the main causes of genetic disorder at birth. Considering these two factors, the diabetes complication (SDC) model, which is sensitive from the diabetes complication (DC) model, is being developed. In this model, the responsive diabetes complication (SDC) model of a nonlinear system of differential equations is transformed into a discrete-time system of equations. The positivity and limitation of Model solutions were examined R0 the basic increment number is calculated. If R0 < 1, it has a global asymptotically stable balance for the situation where there is no genetic disorder at birth, and for R0 < 1, the system has an unstable balance. In addition, random behavior of the discrete model was examined for different probability distributions.

The effect of homocysteine on the expression of CD36, PPARγ, and C/EBPα in adipose tissue of normal and obese mice

Mentese, Ahmet; Dogramaci, Seniz; Demir, Selim; Yaman, Serap Ozer; Ince, Imran; Altay, Diler Us; Erdem, Mehmet; Turan, Ibrahim; Alver, Ahmet

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of homocysteine (Hcy) on CD36, PPARγ, and C/EBPα gene and protein expression in adipose tissue obtained from normal and high-calorie diet obesity models. CD36, PPARγ, and C/EBPα gene expression and protein levels in adipose tissue specimens were determined using the RT-PCR and ELISA methods, respectively. Significantly increased CD36 gene expression was observed in adipose tissue from obese mice, while Hcy significantly reduced CD36 gene expression in adipose tissue from normal and obese mice. PPARγ and C/EBPα gene expression levels decreased significantly in all groups compared to the normal group. In addition, levels of both PPARγ and C/EBPα gene expression were lower with Hcy supplementation compared to their own controls. In conclusion, Hcy’s reduction of CD36 gene expression in adipose tissue may be one probable factor in hyperhomocysteinemia representing an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.

Diagnosis of COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients by classifying only a single cough sound

    Melek, Mesut

In the last month of 2019, a new virus emerged in China, spreading rapidly and affecting the whole world. This virus, which is called corona, is the most contagious type of virus that humanity has ever encountered. The virus has caused a huge crisis worldwide as it leads to severe infections and eventually death in humans. On March 11, 2020, it was announced by the World Health Organization that a COVID-19 outbreak has occurred. Computer-aided digital technologies, which eliminate many problems and provide convenience in people's lives, did not leave humanity alone in this regard and rushed to provide a solution for this unfortunate event. One of the important aspects in which computer-aided digital technologies can be effective is the diagnosis of the disease. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), which is a standard and precise technique for diagnosing the disease, is an expensive and time-consuming method. Moreover, its availability is not the same all over the world. For this reason, it can be very attractive and important to distinguish the COVID-19 disease from a cold or flu through a cough sound analysis via smartphones which have entered into the lives of many people in recent years. In this study, we proposed a machine learning-based system to distinguish patients with COVID-19 from non-COVID-19 patients by analyzing only a single cough sound. Two different data sets were used, one accessible for the public and the other available on request. After combining the data sets, the features were obtained from the cough sounds using the mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) method, and then, they were classified with seven different machine learning classifiers. To determine the optimum values of hyperparameters for MFCCs and classifiers, the leave-one-out cross-validation (LOO-CV) strategy was implemented. Based on the results, the k-nearest neighbors classifier based on the Euclidean distance (kNN Euclidean) with the accuracy rate, sensitivity of COVID-19, sensitivity of non-COVID-19, F-measure, and area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.9833, 1.0000, 0.9720, 0.9799, and 0.9860, respectively, is more successful than other classifiers. Finally, the best and most effective features were determined for each classifier using the sequential forward selection (SFS) method. According to the results, the proposed system is excellent compared with similar studies in the literature and can be easily used in smartphones and facilitate the diagnosis of COVID-19 patients. In addition, since the used data set includes reflex and unconscious coughs, the results showed that conscious or unconscious coughing has no effect on the diagnosis of COVID-19 patients based on the cough sound.

A Two-Phase Approach using Mask R-CNN and 3D U-Net for High-Accuracy Automatic Segmentation of Pancreas in CT Imaging

Dogan, Ramazan Ozgur; Dogan, Hulya; Bayrak, Coskun; Kayikcioglu, Temel

Background and objective: The size, shape, and position of the pancreas are affected by the patient characteristics such as age, sex, adiposity. Owing to more complex anatomical structures (size, shape, and position) of the pancreas, specialists have some difficulties in the analysis of pancreatic diseases (diabetes, pancreatic cancer, pancreatitis). Therefore, the treatment of the disease requires enormous time and depends on the experience of specialists. In order to decrease the rate of pancreatic disease deaths and to assist the specialist in the analysis of pancreatic diseases, automatic pancreas segmentation techniques have been actively developed in the research article for many years. Methods: Although the rapid growth of deep learning and proving satisfactory performance in many medical image processing and computer vision applications, the maximum Dice Similarity Coefficients (DSC) value of these techniques related to automatic pancreas segmentation is only around 85% due to complex structure of the pancreas and other factors. Contrary to previous techniques which are required significantly higher computational power and memory, this paper suggests a novel two-phase approach for high-accuracy automatic pancreas segmentation in computed tomography (CT) imaging. The proposed approach consists of two phases; (1) Pancreas Localization, where the rough pancreas position is detected on the 2D CT slice by adopting Mask R-CNN model, (2) Pancreas Segmentation, where the segmented pancreas region is produced by refining the candidate pancreas region with 3D U-Net on the 2D sub-CT slices generated in the first phase. Both qualitative and quantitative assessments of the proposed approach are performed on the NIH data set. Results: In order to evaluate the achievement of the recommended approach, a total of 16 different automatic pancreas segmentation techniques reported in the literature are compared by utilizing performance assessment procedures which are Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC), Jaccard Index (JI), Precision (PRE), Recall (REC), Pixel Accuracy (ACC), Specificity (SPE), Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) and Area under ROC curve (AUC). The average values of DSC, JI, REC and ACC are computed as 86.15%, 75.93%, 86.27%, 86.27% and 99.95% respectively, which are the best values among well-established studies for automatic pancreas segmentation. Conclusion: It is demonstrated with qualitative and quantitative results that our suggested two-phase approach creates more favorable results than other existing approaches.

Yılmaz, Hacı Ömer; Zemzemoglu, Tuba Eda Arpa

Background: Obesity is a serious health problem that threatens public health. There are limited researches exploring the relationship between obesity and eating disorder risk and intuitive eating. The purpose of this study was to determine the rate of eating disorder risk and obesity, and identify the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and eating disorder risk and intuitive eating among young adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 1216 young adults. The data were obtained through a questionnaire consisted of three sections of socio-demographic information in the first part, Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) in second part and Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26) in third part. Weight, height, and BMI of participants were also measured by researchers. Results: The overall overweight/obesity rate of the participants was 16% (male=25.9%; female=10.9%). The rate of eating disorders risk was 24.3% in general (male=21.5%; female=25.4%). Overweight/obese had higher eating disorders risk than normal and underweight (26.7%, 23.8%, 21.6%, respectively). IES-2 score of underweight was significantly higher than overweight/obese (3.33±0.35, 3.20±0.37, respectively). Conclusion: This is the first study to examine the relationship between BMI and EAT-26 subscale showing that BMI was positively correlated with EAT-26 and negatively was correlated with IES-2 score. Therefore, BMI may be affected by eating behaviors and intuitive eating. Also, intuitive eating can be a new method of eating, and weight control and management.

Determining the phenolic components by using HPLC and biological activity of Centaurea triumfetti

    Acet, Tuba

Centaurea species belonging to Asteraceae family are traditionally used herbs in treating many diseases in Anatolia. In the present study, I aimed to determine the biological activities and phenolic contents of the extracts of the aerial parts of Centaurea triumfetti collected from areas with extreme climatic conditions. The determination of antioxidant activity was performed using in vitro assays such as ABTS (2,2-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) and DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl). Disc diffusion and microdilution methods were used for determine of antimicrobial activity. Besides that, the diabetes-related inhibition activities of enzymes such as alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase were determined using colorimetric methods. The phenolic components of the extracts were analysed by using HPLC. The biological activity of ethyl acetate extracts of the stem was found to be higher those than that of other extracts. This extract was also found to have high antimicrobial and enzyme inhibition activity. Moreover, the major component of the extract was found to be chlorogenic acid. In conclusion, these results suggest that C. triumfetti has the potential for pharmaceutical usage.

The Effect of Progressive Muscle Relaxation Exercises on Pain on Patients with Sickle Cell Disease: Randomized Controlled Study

    Kazak, Aysun; Ozkaraman, Ayse

Purpose: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of progressive muscle relaxation exercises on pain in patients with sickle cell disease. Materials-Method: This randomized controlled interventional study was conducted in a hospital in Mersin, Turkey between October 2017 and July 2018. The study sample comprised 58 patients who were aged >18 years, conscious, had sickle cell disease, reported pain, and were treated with non-opioid or weak opioid analgesic based on the physician's recommendation (treatment group = 29, control group = 29). Data were collected by the individual presentation form and visual analog scale. During the study, both groups were treated with analgesics prescribed by the physician for three days. In addition to the analgesics, the treatment group was performed progressive muscle relaxation exercises for 30 minutes whereas the control group was rested. Pain level of both groups was evaluated at three time points every day for three days. In the study, frequency distributions and descriptive statistics were presented for categorical and numerical variables, respectively. Chi-square analysis, independent samples t-test, Mann–Whitney U test, three-way ANOVA, and Sidak test were used to analyze the difference between the variables. Results: The mean age of the patients was 29.59 ± 6.94 years, and 53.4% of the patients were female and 69% were single. The mean pain score of the treatment group at the third time point on days 1, 2, and 3 was significantly lower than the control group (p <.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of coping methods for pain, pain location, and complaints accompanying pain (p >.05). Conclusion: Progressive muscle relaxation exercises were found to be effective in the pain management of patients with sickle cell anemia.
