Tumor Classification via Subregion Combinations of Cortical L5PC6 Pyramidal Neurons

Ozcan, Zubeyir; Bozkir, Ilknur Kayikcioglu; Kayikcioglu, Temel

In this study, it was aimed to classify benign and malignant tumor samples by utilizing different subregions of a cortical L5PC6 pyramidal neuron. A spike-based learning method was applied to a real dataset, and a decision mechanism based on action potential generation was established by training a separate neuron for each class. During the training process, various types of synaptic connections and spike encoding schemes were evaluated and intensity coding yielded the highest performance for the pyramidal neuron. Regional analyses revealed that the basilar region particularly stood out in terms of classification success. The results demonstrate that the morphological and biophysical diversity of pyramidal neurons provides a significant advantage in classification tasks.

Algebraic and topological foundations of non-Newtonian analysis via generator functions

    Civgin, Emre; Yalcin, Numan

In this paper we explored the algebraic and topological underpinnings of non-Newtonian analysis through the framework of a generator function α. We introduced the α-number systems and the associated arithmetic operations, and we established the corresponding algebraic structures, including groups, fields, and vector spaces defined over α-real numbers. On the topological side, we developed the notions of α-metric spaces and α-sequences, thereby extending core concepts of analysis to the non-Newtonian setting. The study culminates with the formulation of star (*) analysis, which provides a systematic mechanism for transitioning between distinct arithmetic systems, together with a rigorous treatment of *-vector spaces and linear operators.

Advancing sea level anomaly modeling in the black sea with LSTM Auto-Encoders: A novel approach

    Yavuzdoğan, A.; Tanir Kayıkçı, E.

Rising sea levels pose significant risks to coastal communities and ecosystems. Accurate modeling of sea level changes is crucial for effective environmental management and disaster mitigation. Machine learning methods are emerging as an important asset in improving sea level predictions and understanding the impacts of climate change. Especially, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models have emerged as a powerful tool for sea level anomaly modeling, but there is an increasing need for more advanced models in this area. This study enhances existing methodologies by introducing a novel approach using an LSTM Auto-Encoder model, designed to compress input data into a lower-dimensional latent space before reconstructing it, thereby capturing complex temporal dependencies and anomalies effectively. We compared LSTM Auto-Encoder model performance with that of a Stacked LSTM network, which learns complex temporal patterns through multiple layers, and a traditional damped-persistence statistical model. Our results demonstrate that the LSTM Auto-Encoder model not only outperformed these models in predicting sea level anomalies across various lead times but also exhibited superior generalization capabilities across both satellite altimeter and in-situ data. These findings highlight the potential of the LSTM Auto-Encoder model as a powerful tool in coastal management and climate change studies, underscoring the critical role of advanced machine learning techniques in enhancing our predictive abilities and informing disaster preparedness strategies.

Unveiling the bioactive potential of Scabiosa rotata M. Bieb fruits: a landmark study on cytotoxic, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities through liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry profiling and molecular docking

Yildirim, Aybeniz; Celep, Inci Kurt; Gül, Abdulkadir; Eter, Özge Soylu; Baǧcl, Eyüp

The aim of this study was to investigate the antioxidant, cytotoxic, and antibacterial activities of ethanol extract (SRE) and its hexane (SRH), chloroform (SRC), ethyl acetate (SREA), and aqueous ethanol (SRAE) sub-extracts obtained from the fruits of Scabiosa rotata M. Bieb. Molecular docking studies were also performed to evaluate the interactions of the most active sub-extract with the human mitochondrial ABC transporter (ABCB10) protein, plays an important role in cellular oxidative stress regulation and mitochondrial function. Total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid (TFC) contents and antioxidant radical scavenging activities (1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl [DPPH] and 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6 sulfonic acid [ABTS]) of all extracts were determined. Cytotoxic activity was evaluated on different cell lines, such as HepG2 (liver cancer), MCF-7 (breast cancer), and HeLa (cervical cancer) cells. Antibacterial activity was tested against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, and Staphylococcus aureus. SREA showed the best antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 54.20 μg/ml and 48.56 μg/ml for DPPH and ABTS, respectively, and also had high TPC (499.06 mg GA/g) and TFC (327.45 mg QE/g). Furthermore, SREA showed significant cytotoxicity comparable to cisplatin with IC50 values of 51.29, 51.41, and 52.89 μg/ml for HepG2, MCF-7, and HeLa cells, respectively. However, none of the extracts showed antibacterial activity. The analysis using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS) on SREA found that the main phenolic compounds are chlorogenic acid, hesperidin, quinic acid, and isoorientin. Molecular docking of the major compounds showed that chlorogenic acid (2.21 mM) exhibited the strongest binding affinity, followed by hesperidin (5.83 mM), quinic acid (8.86 mM), and isoorientin (13 mM). These findings indicate the potential of SREA to be used as a natural antioxidant and anticancer agent.

    Karahan, Selim; Guler, Cengiz

In this study, under laboratory conditions, hazelnut husk and astragalus plant were mixed separately into black pine wood chips, and multi-purpose boards were produced from the obtained chips with urea formaldehyde glue. After the hazelnut husk and astragalus plant were dried and ground, they were added to the chip and glue mixture in certain proportions. Hazelnut husk mixture ratios were applied as 100 %; 0 %, 75 %; 25 %, 50 %; 50 %, 25 %; 75 %, 0 %; 100 % to black pine wood chip in the particle board mixture. These ratios were made in the same way for the astragalus plant. From these mixtures, chipboard blanks of 16 mm thickness and densities between 0,68 g/cm3 and 0,72 g/cm3 were produced. Density, moisture content, thickness increase, water intake, bending strength, modulus of elasticity in bending and tensile strength perpendicular to the surface were tested in physical and mechanical experiments. According to the results obtained, as the participation rate of hazelnut shells and astragalus increased, the durability properties of the panels decreased. At the same time, it shows that the technological properties of the panels produced by adding up to 25 % astragalus plant and hazelnut shells to the mixture comply with the standards.

Physicochemical, rheological properties, antioxidant activity and mineral amount of the ice cream containing barberry (Berberis vulgaris L.); [Karamuk (Berberis vulgaris L.) ilaveli dondurmanın fizikokimyasal, reolojik özellikleri, antioksidan aktivitesi ve mineral içeriği]

    Ürkek, Bayram

Ice cream is classified as a dairy product or frozen dessert. Various fruits have been incorporated into ice cream formulations to enhance their quality and nutritional properties. In this study, ice creams were prepared with barberry at four different concentrations (0%, 5%, 10% and 15%). The physicochemical, rheological characteristics, antioxidant activity, mineral content and sensory properties of the samples were examined. With the addition of barberry, the dry matter (DM), acidity and overrun values increased, while pH and fat content decreased. The viscosity and consistency coefficients were highest in the samples containing 10% and 15% barberry. All samples exhibited pseudoplastic flow behavior. The colorimetric parameters showed significant differences among the samples, except for the C* value. The sample with 5% barberry had higher levels of Ca, Na, Mg, S, Fe and Zn compared to the other barberry-added samples. The sample containing 15% barberry demonstrated the highest DPPH scavenging activity (22.15 μg/mL) and total phenolic content (TPC) (1474.04 mg GAE/g), while the sample without barberry had the lowest values (143.19 μg/mL and 149.48 mg GAE/g, respectively). Additionally, the control sample received the lowest scores for gumming structure, texture, melting in the mouth, resistance to melting and overall acceptability. These findings suggest that incorporating 10% barberry could enhance the quality and nutritional value of ice creams.

Influence of PGA/PGV ratio on the seismic performance of buildings with different slenderness ratios considering soil-structure interaction

    Araz, Onur

In this study, the seismic performance of buildings equipped with tuned mass damper (TMD) having different slenderness ratios, subjected to ground motions with varying a wide range of PGA/PGV ratios is investigated, considering soil-structure interaction (SSI). A methodology based on hybrid Genetic Algorithm-Particle Swarm Optimization (GA-PSO) algorithm is proposed to determine the optimal parameters of TMD. For this purpose, three buildings (i.e., 3-story, 6-story, and 12-story buildings) are considered and the dynamic properties of these buildings are determined according to the provisions specified in ASCE-7. These buildings, which are frequently encountered in the traditional building stock, represent low, medium, and high-rise buildings, respectively. In the numerical analysis, three different soil types (i.e., SC, SD, and SE) and 80 ground motions are also considered. These records are divided into three different classes: high, intermediate, and low frequency content. The Newmark integration method is used to determine the dynamic responses of the structures in the time domain analysis. Numerical results show that the frequency content of ground motion and the slenderness ratio have a significant effect in reducing the peak displacement and acceleration responses of structures. The findings also demonstrate that when the PGA/PGV ratio is greater than 2, TMD shows mostly sufficient control performance for all buildings and all support conditions.

Agrivoltaic system design for sugar beets and wheat in central Anatolia

Yalçın, Ömer; Kuzyaka, Duygu; Özden, Talat

Agrivoltaic systems, which integrate photovoltaic (PV) panels with the usage of agricultural land, emerge as a promising strategy by facilitating the simultaneous generation of renewable energy alongside the cultivation of various crops within the same area. This research is centered on the design and implementation of an agrivoltaic system that is specifically customized for the cultivation of wheat and sugar beet in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey. The primary objective of this research is to optimize the spatial arrangement of the PV panels to achieve a balance between the generation of energy and the productivity of the crops. Through a detailed assessment of shading effects and Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD) levels, this investigation will endeavor to unravel the complex interplay between panel configuration and its consequential impacts on both plant growth and energy output. In this investigation, the shading impacts attributed to three distinct configurations—specifically, the conventional solar power plant (SPP), the intermittently arranged panel layout, and the intermittently arranged V-shaped panel configuration—were assessed, and their appropriateness for the cultivation of wheat and sugar beet was evaluated. The V-shaped design, which additionally facilitates rainwater collection, yielded an enhanced PPFD value across the three designated regions beneath the panels.

Managing information asymmetry and conflicting interests in multi stakeholder sustainable supply chains using multi-criteria decision analysis

    Şimşek, Ahmet Bahadir; Şimşek, Aybala

This chapter focuses on the challenges which information asymmetry and conflicts of interest present to multi- stakeholder sustainable supply chain design and suggests the use of MCDA to address these challenges. It looks at the ways information imbalances and divergent stakeholder priorities hamper cooperation and sustainability objectives to produce trust problems and ineffectiveness. These challenges are outlined in the chapter using theoretical underpinnings such as Game Theory and Akerlof's Market of Lemons. Next, it illustrates the MCDA's role in dealing with these problems (transparency, balancing conflicting interests and making the decision in an inclusive way). The practical application of MCDA is illustrated via a hypothetical green supply chain project that demonstrates the ability of diverse stakeholder priorities to be harmonised through systematic criteria evaluation and consensus building. The chapter concludes with a discussion of MCDA's potential for integrating environmental, social and economic goals in optimal decision making in complex supply chains.

Institutional Structure and Environmental Pollution: An Application within the Framework of the Environmental Kuznets Curve Hypothesis

Hayaloglu, Pınar; Recepoglu, Murşit; Cakir, Mehmet Ali

The EKC hypothesis explains the relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation. However, criticisms of its fundamental assumptions suggest that this relationship should be examined more comprehensively. While the EKC hypothesis addresses the link between income levels and environmental quality, it may overlook the impact of institutional structures and policy factors. In this context, recent studies increasingly highlight the role of institutional structures in environmental degradation. Accordingly, this study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of environmental sustainability by approaching the EKC hypothesis from the perspective of institutional quality. To determine the effects of institutional quality on environmental degradation, the study employs the Driscoll-Kraay estimation method. The analysis is conducted on a sample of SADC countries for the period 1990-2021. The findings indicate that institutional quality has a statistically significant and positive effect on environmental degradation; however, beyond a certain threshold, this effect reverses. Additionally, the impact of economic growth on environmental degradation is examined within the EKC framework, revealing that while per capita income initially increases environmental degradation, exceeding a certain income level leads to improvements in environmental quality. The findings confirm the validity of the EKC hypothesis in SADC countries and suggest that strong institutional structures can play a supportive role in promoting environmental sustainability.

Experimental determination of the compression behavior of RTV silicone rubber-based magnetorheological (MR) materials under static loading

    Mazlum, Ugur; Celik, Ilhan

In this study, MR elastomer (MRE) materials were produced using seven different types of silicone rubber and five different types of magnetically sensitive ferromagnetic powders. The MRE materials were obtained in three states: pure, isotropic (homogeneous), and anisotropic (aligned). Compression tests were conducted using a uniaxial testing machine, with engineering stress–strain curves, tangent modulus, and MR-strain behavior graphs generated, considering powder ratio, powder type, and hardness values. The goal was to investigate the positive effects of magnetic field influence on these parameters and how the alignment state affected the stress performance of the materials. As a result, the highest stress increase at 10% strain was observed in materials containing 40% powder, with magnetic field comparison showing the most significant results. With the EM powder type at a 30% powder ratio in the isotropic state, a 563% increase in stress was obtained. Among the matrix materials with the same hardness, the most robust material was determined to be the MM240 TV with a Shore hardness of 40. Furthermore, the most significant increase in tangent modulus under the influence of the magnetic field was observed in vertically aligned materials. Compared to the pure material, a 3127% increase was found at 0.57% strain in vertically aligned samples. In materials with Shore hardness of 2, using Basf CN powder at 10–40% powder ratios, the highest relative MR effect was observed at a 20% powder ratio. The stress increase for vertically aligned samples compared to the pure state was 1274.6% at 0.27% strain. When comparing the relative MR effect of materials with Shore hardness between 10 and 59, the largest increase was obtained from the Sorta Clear matrix material.

Gray Divorce in the Shadow of Modernization: Changing Family Dynamics in Türkiye

Aydin, Selcuk; Sahin, Abdurrahim; Bahadir, Muhammed

Gray divorce, defined as the dissolution of marriages among individuals aged 50 and above, has become an increasingly significant issue in Türkiye. Official statistics in Türkiye show that between 2001 and 2024, divorces among individuals aged 50 and above increased both in absolute numbers and as a proportion of total divorces, rising nearly threefold during this period. These increases reflect broader demographic and social changes, such as population ageing, longer life expectancy, changing expectations of marriage, and shifting gender norms. Using sociological literature on modernization and family change, as well as official statistical data, this review synthesises existing knowledge and situates gray divorce within global debates on family transformation. Findings from gray divorce studies indicate that women’s increasing autonomy, life cycle transitions such as retirement or empty nest experiences, and greater societal acceptance of divorce contribute to this trend. Furthermore, gray divorces have broad implications for intergenerational relationships, care responsibilities, and social policies. Specifically in Türkiye, regional differences show that divorce among the elderly is more prevalent in western urbanized provinces, where individualism and secular values prevail, and significantly less common in eastern regions, where traditional and religious norms are stronger. The increasing prevalence of this phenomenon highlights the need for more empirical research and policy responses that are appropriate to Türkiye’s demographic, regional, and cultural transformations.

Drivers of the Load Capacity Factor in New İndustrialized Countries: Economic Growth, Financial Development and Urbanization on Load Capacity Factor

Durmus, Savas; Agırkaya, Melahat Batu; Akyol, Hikmet

This study examines the effects of economic growth, financial development, and urbanization on the load capacity factor (LCF) for Newly Industrialized Countries (NICs) over the period 1991-2021. In this context, we analyzed the relationship between the variables using the Fixed Effects Driscoll-Kraay and Fixed Effects Panel Quantile estimators. The estimation results indicate that across all quantiles (low, medium, and high levels of environmental degradation), economic growth has a positive effect on LCF, while the squared term of economic growth has a negative effect. Urbanization and renewable energy consumption positively impact LCF, whereas financial development and labor force participation rates have negative effects. The positive effects of urbanization and renewable energy consumption on LCF become more pronounced in higher quantiles. Conversely, the negative impact of labor force participation on LCF is stronger in higher quantiles. The negative effect of financial development on LCF, however, becomes statistically insignificant at higher quantiles.

What is the relationship between fairness and trust in terms of tax compliance?

    Günay, Hamdi Furkan

Two frequently researched factors in the tax compliance literature are perceptions of fairness and trust. Nevertheless, what is known about the relationship between the two variables is limited. Different findings in the literature have encouraged further research. This study aims to examine the relationship between fairness and trust in tax compliance and the role of these variables with multivariate statistical tests. In this direction, survey data were collected from 540 self-employed taxpayers in Istanbul/Turkey. As a result of the multivariate statistical tests carried out by dividing the data in two, the following conclusions were reached: (1) in line with the findings in the literature, perceptions of tax fairness and trust in tax authorities are essential determinants of tax compliance intention; (2) tax fairness positively affects trust in authorities and trust in authorities positively affects tax fairness; (3) both the mediating and moderating role of trust in tax authorities in the relationship between perceptions of tax fairness and tax compliance intention are confirmed; and (4) although there is a mediating effect of perceptions of tax fairness in the relationship between trust in tax authorities and tax compliance intention, the existence of a moderating effect could not be detected.

    Erol, Seyit; Ürkek, Bayram

Traditional cheeses from Turkey's Black Sea region, such as Aho, Golot, and Telli, are widely known for their unique flavors and artisanal production methods. However, their microbiological safety, mineral content, and heavy metal contamination remain understudied. In this study, we evaluated 30 cheese samples for essential minerals and toxic heavy metals, alongside conducting a corresponding health risk assessment. The results of our mineral analysis revealed sodium (Na) levels ranging from 9787.79 to 37,902.22 mg/kg, while calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) were present at nutritionally relevant concentrations. Heavy metals such as lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) were detected, with Golot and Telli cheeses showing elevated levels (Pb: up to 1788.75 μg/kg; Hg: up to 468.71 μg/kg). Furthermore, health risk assessments, including estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), and hazard index (HI), indicated that 93.3% of samples posed negligible risks (HI < 1), though two outliers (6.7%) exceeded safety thresholds. Taken together, these findings underscore the need for improved production processes in traditional cheese production while affirming their nutritional value and overall safety for consumers.

Evaluation of ChatGPT-4, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot in Generating Nursing Diagnoses Based on NANDA-I Taxonomy II: A Comparative Cross-Sectional Study

    Tuncer, Metin; Yalcinkaya, Turgay

Aim: To evaluate the capability of large language models to generate nursing diagnoses based on NANDA-I Taxonomy II and assess their performance across domains and overall. Background: Large language models are emerging tools in nursing, showing potential to aid in diagnosis generation and education. However, their accuracy and applicability in clinical and educational settings remain underexplored. Methods: This cross-sectional comparative study used 10 realistic patient scenarios based on NANDA-I Taxonomy II, covering 12 domains. The study aimed to evaluate the capability of four models to generate nursing diagnoses based on patient scenarios. The responses were assessed by five nursing experts for accuracy and alignment with NANDA-I Taxonomy II in a single-blind evaluation process. Results: All models demonstrated similar performance across different domains and overall, with Claude attaining the highest overall performance score. Expert evaluations indicated moderate interrater reliability. Discussion: Small variations between models and occasional omissions suggest that expert review is still required before clinical use. Conclusions: Large language models are not yet sufficiently reliable for independent use in clinical settings and nursing education. Their application as supportive tools necessitates a cautious approach. Moreover, the development of specialized models designed to address the unique demands of the nursing field would be advantageous. Implications for nursing: When large language models are used in nursing practice, their limitations should be considered, and the outputs they produce should be verified by nurses. Implications for nursing policy: Ensuring the safe integration of artificial intelligence tools into nursing necessitates the establishment of robust regulatory policies to safeguard patient safety, the deployment of effective systems to monitor models’ performance, and the development of comprehensive guidelines and training programs.
