Evaluation of Adolescents’ Perceptions of Family in Child Sexual Abuse Cases Reported to Forensic Authorities: A Qualitative Study

    Uzun, Sevda; Bayrak, Nurten Gülsüm

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the family perceptions of adolescents in cases of child sexual abuse reported to judicial authorities. Material and Methods: In this qualitative investigation, semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 15 children who were exposed to qualified sexual abuse and lived in a northern Turkish city. The criterion sampling method, a purposive sampling technique, was used to select study participants. Interviews were carried out until data saturation was achieved. All interviews were meticulously recorded and subsequently transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was employed to interpret the data. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research checklist guidelines were adhered to throughout the study. Results: In the analysis of the data, three overarching categories (reflections on family relationships, sexual abuse and relationships with family, and situations in the family that are desired to change or improve) and eight sub-themes (mother, father, siblings, directly or indirectly, cognitive dimension, emotional dimension and behavioral dimension) were obtained. Conclusion: In this study, it was found that the outcomes related to family dynamics of adolescents who were victims of sexual abuse are very important for healthy mental development. In this context, early detection of negativities related to family dynamics and identification of risky families are very important.

Effectiveness of Psychosocial Interventions in Alcohol and Substance Use Disorders: A Meta-Analysis Study

Helvacı Çelik, Fatma Gül; Bayrak, Nurten Gülsüm; Uzun, Sevda

Alcohol and substance use disorders (ASUD), are increasing worldwide, and these psychiatric disorders are difficult to treat. The search for new treatments for these disorders continues. Psychosocial interventions (PI) are among them, and it is important to evaluate their effectiveness. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of PI applied to individuals with ASUD. This meta-analysis was conducted by searching PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, and YOK Thesis Center databases without year restrictions between October and December 2023. After reviewing the studies, 18 research articles were included in the analysis. The meta-analysis revealed that PI applied to individuals with ASUD were effective in reducing depression (SMD: −0.753, 95% CI: −1.215 to −2.91; I2 = 94.515; p < 0.05) and enhancing self-efficacy (SMD: 0.709, 95% CI: 0.096–1.321; I2 = 93.34; p < 0.05). However, these interventions were not found to be effective in improving self-esteem (SMD: 0.655, 95% CI: −1.641 to 0.331).

    Bayrak, Nurten Gülsüm; Uzun, Sevda

Background: Psychosocial interventions are an essential component in the treatment of eating disorders that can negatively affect both mental and physical health. Aims: This study was conducted to determine the effect size of psychosocial interventions in eating disorders. Methods: For this meta-analysis study, researches were obtained by searching PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO host, Google Scholar, and YÖK Thesis Centre databases in August to September 2024 without any year limitation. After the reviews, 15 studies were included. The data were synthesized by meta-analysis and narrative methods. Results: In this meta-analysis, psychosocial interventions in eating disorders were found to improve depression (SMD = −0.371, 95% CI [−0.697, −0.045]; Z = −2.228, p = .026); stress (SMD = −0.545, 95% CI [−1.080, −0.011]; Z = −1.999, p = .046); self-control (SMD = 0.476, 95% CI [0.116, 0.835]; Z = 2.594, p = .009); and emotional eating (SMD = 0.224, 95% CI [−4.305, −0.164]; Z = −2.115, p = .034). Discussion: The results of the study showed that psychosocial interventions in eating disorders are effective in disease symptoms (depression, stress, self-control, and emotional eating). In addition to psychopharmacological treatment, psychosocial interventions should be included in the treatment of eating disorders.

Investigation of perceived parental attitude in children exposed to sexual abuse: A case-control study

Bayrak, Nurten Gülsüm; Emirza, Elif Güzide; Uzun, Sevda

Background: The enduring impact of children being subjected to sexual abuse is characterized by lasting traumatic effects. Aims: This study aims to assess the influence of perceived parental attitudes on the incidence of sexual abuse in children who have experienced such abuse, comparing them with a control group. Methods: The research took place at the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) of a hospital in northern Turkey and in the pediatric outpatient clinics of the same institution. The study evaluated 101 children who were exposed to sexual abuse and 100 children who were not. Data collection took place between November 2022 and August 2023. The study employed a ‘Descriptive Information Form’ and the ‘Parental Attitude Scale’ for both case and control groups. The t-test for independent samples, descriptive statistics, and logistic regression analysis were used for data analysis. Results: Analysis of scores from the Parental Attitude Scale revealed significantly lower mean scores in acceptance-involvement and strictness-supervision in the case group (p <.05). The mean scores for ‘acceptance-involvement’ (X¯ = 22.82 ± 6.26, X¯ = 25.71 ± 3.89) were highest in the case and control groups. Neglectful attitude (38.6%) was more prevalent in the case group, while the control group exhibited a higher frequency of democratic attitude (37%). In terms of predictors, acceptance-involvement (OR = 1.091, p =.005) and maternal employment (OR = 4.410, p <.001) were identified as the most significant predictors of exposed to sexual abuse. The study’s Cronbach’s alpha value for the scale was α =.743. Conclusion: The study’s findings on parental attitudes suggest a potential connection between children’s exposure to sexual abuse and inadequate parental acceptance, involvement, supervision, and control.

The relationship between anxiety levels and anger expression styles of nurses during COVID-19 pandemic

Bayrak, Nurten Gülsüm; Uzun, Sevda; Kulakaç, Nurşen

Objective: This study was carried out in a cross-sectional and correlational design to explore the relationship between anxiety levels and anger expression styles of nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The sample of this cross-sectional and correlational type of study consisted of 618 nurses calculated with the snowball sampling method. The data were collected using a questionnaire developed by the researchers, the state anxiety inventory, and the trait anger and anger expression scale and was conducted between May 10 and 20, 2020 using an online questionnaire form. Percentage, mean, standard deviation, the Mann–Whitney U test, Kruskal–Wallis test, Spearman correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis were used to evaluate the data. Results: The mean age of nurses was 34.98 ± 8.36 years (min: 20; max: 53), 87.4% were women, and 81.7% experienced a high level of anxiety. The anger scores of the participants were found to be 20.04 ± 4.43, the anger-in score was 15.55 ± 3.34, the anger-out score was 14.01 ± 2.87, and the anger control score was 22.93 ± 3.6. Being married, the presence of chronic disease, living in the Marmara region, working shifts, presence of an individual over 65 years of age at home, and having a COVID-19 test were found to be risk factors that significantly increase nurses' anxieties. A significant positive relationship was found between the anxiety scores, trait anger (r = 0.249, p = 0.000), anger-in (r = 0.174, p = 0.000) and anger-out (r = 0.205, p = 0.000) scores of nurses, and a significant negative relationship was found between the anxiety scores and anger control (r = 0.249, p = 0.000) score. Conclusion: The study revealed that in the COVID-19 pandemic the anxiety levels of the nurses were high and that the high anxiety level negatively affected the style of anger expression, but the nurses were successful in maintaining anger control. In line with these results, it is important that nurses develop effective coping strategies to reduce their anxiety levels and that they receive increased levels of support in managing anger expression.
