- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ3Effects of hawthorn (Crataegus oxycantha) fruit extract on tibia bone properties in broiler chickens subjected to heat stress
Kaya, H.; Karaalp, M.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects on tibia morphology, biomechanics, and mineral levels of varying dosages of hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacantha) fruit extract (HFE) addition to experimentally heat-stressed broiler drinking water. A 2x3 factorial experimental design was used to randomly assign 300 one-day-old male broilers to six experimental groups. The experimental groups included three different HFE additions (0, 0.2, and 0.4 mL/L) and two different ambient temperatures (24 and 35 °C). Each experimental group consisted of five replicates, with 10 chicks (initial body weight 38±4 g) per replicate. The study results indicated that heat stress (IIS) led to a decline in tibia dry weight, length, wet weight, volume, Seedor index, cortex thickness, shear force and shear stress, while concurrently resulting in an increase in dry matter percentage (P<0.05). Heat stress led to a decline in the levels of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and potassium (K) (P<0.05). The addition of HFE in the drinking water of broiler chickens exposed to HS did not significantly affect the morphological and biomechanical properties of the tibia. However, tibial Ca levels increased with the addition of 0.2 mL/L HFE, while Mg and Zn levels were elevated at both 0.2 and 0.4 mL/L HFE concentrations compared to the control group (P<0.05). In contrast, Fe and Mn levels decreased with 0.2 mL/L HFE supplementation, and K levels were reduced at both supplementation levels compared to the control (P<0.05). The findings suggest that the addition of 0.2 mL/L HFE to the drinking water of heat-stressed broiler chickens may be an effective and recommended strategy to enhance bone quality characteristics.

Özmaya, Esma; Uzun, Sevda; Aytaç, Tufan
Mindfulness-based interventions have been receiving growing attention in cancer care. This study was performed to determine the effect of a mindfulness-based stress reduction program on depression and quality of life in cancer patients. The screenings in the study were performed in January to May 2023 through the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, and YÖK Thesis Center databases. After the reviews, 14 studies were included in the study. This meta-analysis showed that mindfulness-based stress reduction programs were effective on depression (SMD: −0.363; 95% CI: −0.711 to 0.015; Z = −2.042; P = .041; I2 = 85.229%) and quality of life (SMD: 0.363; 95 CI%: 0.111-0.615; Z = 2.822; P = .005; I2 = 75.222%). The type of cancer (SMD: 0.385; CI: between 0.005 and 0.528; P = .000); duration of therapy (SMD: 0.243; CI: between 0.093 and 0.393; P = .002); the person providing therapy (SMD: 0.335; CI: between 0.133 and 0.507; P = .001); scale used (SMD: 0.290; CI: between 0.148 and 0.432; P = .000); and the origin of the study (SMD: 0.298; CI: between 0.158 and 0.438; P = .000) moderators were found to play a role in the effectiveness of a mindfulness-based stress reduction program on the quality of life of cancer patients. The mindfulness-based stress reduction program yields positive outcomes by reducing depression, enhancing the quality of life in cancer patients, and promoting overall mental well-being in individuals.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Experimental research on enhancing effectiveness in teaching the nature of seasons
Semercioğlu, Melike Güzin; Kalkan, Hüseyin
In recent years, studies by education researchers indicate that, despite various instructional methods to enhance the conceptual understanding of seasons, the reasons for the formation of seasons and the processes involved are still not fully grasped. This research aims to investigate the fundamental reasons for the difficulties in comprehending the formation of seasons and to develop possible solutions. To achieve this goal, a physical model based on the “Change in the Amount of Energy Falling onto a Unit Surface (CAEFUS)” of parallel beams of sunlight as Earth orbits around the Sun with a tilted axis of approximately 23.5 degrees was developed and applied to participants, and data were collected. These instructional processes were applied to experimental and control groups. The research was conducted on 148 eighth-grade students in a state school in Samsun (the city in Turkey) province. Exploratory factor analysis was used to analyze students' drawings and separate them into their most prominent elements. The quantitative data analysis, consisting of multiple-choice questions, utilized the SPSS 22.0 statistical program. According to ANOVA Results for SEMAT Achievement Scores, a significant difference was determined between the experimental and control groups (F = 7.625, p < 0.05). In addition, the control group mean in the pre-test fell below the experimental group mean in the pre-test. However, the mean of the experimental group in the post-test exceeded that of the control group (Pre-test‘e’ = 1.54, Pre-test‘c’ = 1.82; Post-test‘e’ = 3.21, Post-test‘c’ = 2.86). The data analysis revealed that the CAEFUS-based model significantly impacted the meaningful teaching of the nature of seasons. These results were thoroughly evaluated through a detailed comparison with the literature.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1The 2023 Mw 7.8–7.7 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes were loosely slip-predictable

Understanding the behavior of large earthquakes over multiple seismic cycles is limited by short time spans of observations compared to recurrence intervals. Most of large instrumentally-recorded earthquakes have occurred on faults lacking well-documented histories of past events. The 2023 Mw 7.8–7.7 Kahramanmaraş earthquake doublet is exceptional as it ruptured multiple segments of the East Anatolian Fault (EAF) system, where historical records of devastating earthquakes span over two millennia. Here, we use historical earthquake records, measurements of interseismic deformation, and published slip models of the 2023 events to evaluate the recurrence patterns of large earthquakes. We compare slip deficit that accrued on each fault segment since the respective penultimate events to the average coseismic slip of the 2023 doublet. We find that the coseismic slip equaled to or exceeded the accumulated slip deficit, suggesting that the slip-predictable recurrence model applies as a lower bound on strain release during the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes.

The analysis of gold, which is a precious metal with limited resources, in environmental samples is crucial for the sustainable utilization of natural resources. Therefore, in the present research we have aimed to develop a novel and environmentally friendly bioadsorbent, Brevibacillus borstelensis loaded on silica gel (BB@Si), with outstanding adsorptive properties that can be implemented for quantitative recovery of Au(iii) ions via the solid phase extraction (SPE) technique. After characterizing the developed adsorbent using FTIR and SEM techniques, we conducted a detailed investigation of the critical parameters that influence the extraction performance of Au(iii) ions. Optimum parameters were observed as follows: pH 3.0, adsorption contact time 30 min, eluent type 0.1% (w/v) thiourea in 0.5 M HNO3, elution time 60 min, BB@Si amount 1.0 g L−1, and sample volume 400 mL. Some of the well-known isotherm and kinetic models were applied to the results observed from the adsorption studies. Equilibrium adsorption capacity of BB@Si was estimated to be 66.2 mg g−1 utilizing the Langmuir isotherm model while the limit of detection (LOD) and relative standard deviation (RSD%) were established as 0.99 μg L−1 and 3.7%, respectively. The developed method was utilized smoothly for the quantification of Au(iii) ions in mining wastewater, acid mine drainage (AMD), streams and seawater.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Spatially explicit modeling of road icing susceptibility using GIS and a multi-criteria decision approach: A case study of Gümüşhane city (Türkiye)
Işık, Fatih; Kanyılmaz, Rabia; Çağlak, Savas; Eraslan, Selim; Zeybek, Halil İbrahim
This study develops and validates a GIS-based, spatio-temporal model to identify and prioritize road segments with high icing susceptibility in the Gümüşhane city center, Türkiye. Icing on urban roadways constitutes a significant threat to vehicular and pedestrian safety, particularly in regions characterized by complex topography and dense urban morphology. A Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) framework, employing the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) with structured expert input, was used to synthesize ten primary causative factors. These include solar radiation, temperature, aspect, object height, precipitation, elevation, pavement material, slope, albedo, and road width — each representing a distinct topographic, climatic, or morphological influence on urban road icing. The AHP quantitatively established the relative influence of these factors, identifying solar radiation (28.5%), temperature (18.2%), and aspect (13.5%) as the most dominant drivers. The model generates monthly susceptibility maps that reveal "urban canyons"—narrow streets flanked by highrise buildings—consistently exhibit the highest and most persistent susceptibility due to severely limited solar radiation. The accuracy of the model's spatial predictions was quantitatively validated through field observations, with 91.4% of recurring icing locations correctly identified within high or very high susceptibility zones. This research culminates not only in a robust scientific framework but also in a validated decision-support tool that has been successfully integrated into the Gümüşhane City Information System (GCIS), where it is now operationally used to optimize winter maintenance strategies. Ultimately, this work provides a replicable, data-driven approach for enhancing urban resilience and traffic safety in challenging topographical settings.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ3Highland Festivals in Türkiye’s Eastern Black Sea Region: A Cultural Sociological Analysis
Özkan, Vildane
This article examines the social functions of highland festivals in Türkiye’s Eastern Black Sea uplands and their role in sustaining cultural continuity. Drawing on participant observation at major festivals in Gümüşhane, Rize, and Artvin, alongside relevant case studies, the research finds that these rituals generate strong collective effervescence and enact common values. Despite pressures from emigration and tourism, the festivals have adapted practices to maintain social cohesion. Interpreted through a cultural sociological framework, the analysis shows how ritual performances operate as symbolic practices that reinforce identity, embody shared habitus, and mediate the tension between tradition and modernity. The research thus illustrates how highland festivals function as sites of cultural reproduction and collective solidarity under conditions of social change.

Zaman, Tolga; Sozen, Caglar
Classical statistical methods cannot directly incorporate measurement uncertainties and indeterministic elements into the model, leading to estimation errors and biases, especially in environmental datasets. Neutrosophic statistics, on the other hand, offers a broader approach that does not only rely on exact values, but also includes ambiguous, incomplete and conflicting information. In this study, we propose a new neutrosophic ratio-type estimator for estimating the population mean using monthly temperature data for Turkey for the period 2010-2022. This study proposes neutrosophic multivariate exponential estimators considering two auxiliary attributes. The mean square error equations of all proposed neutrosophic exponential estimators are obtained theoretically. Some conditions of neutrosophic multivariate exponential estimators are considered and the properties of these estimators are studied. The effectiveness of the proposed neutrosophic exponential estimators is analyzed using neutrosophic temperature data. In addition to real data analysis, extensive simulation studies are conducted under various scenarios to evaluate the performance of the estimators. The results demonstrate that the proposed estimators perform effectively under uncertainty and can be successfully applied in forecasting environmental variables.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1A novel q-ROHFS prospect theory based MABAC method for failure mode risk prioritization in aircraft landing systems
Köseoğlu, Ali; Altun, Fatma; Şahin, Rıdvan
Failure mode risk prioritization is crucial in aircraft landing systems, where undetected or misjudged failures can lead to catastrophic outcomes. Effective risk analysis enables proactive maintenance and enhances aviation safety in such critical phases of flight. In this study, a novel hybrid decision-making framework is proposed to prioritize failure modes in aircraft landing systems by integrating the Multi-Attributive Border Approximation Area Comparison (MABAC) method with Prospect Theory under a q-Rung Orthopair Hesitant Fuzzy Set (q-ROHFS) environment. Traditional failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) approaches often suffer from rigid weighting schemes, lack of sensitivity to expert hesitancy, and an inability to incorporate psychological factors such as risk aversion or subjective evaluations—especially in high-risk domains like aviation. To address these limitations, the proposed model incorporates human psychological behaviour and uncertainty in expert assessments. Prospect Theory is employed to capture decision makers’ risk attitudes and reference-dependent evaluations, while q-ROHFSs allow more flexible and comprehensive representation of hesitant and uncertain information. In this approach, Best-Worst Method (BWM) is used to determine the relative importance of risk factors for each decision maker, and their individual weights are obtained using TOPSIS-based similarity measures. A novel generalized q-ROHF Minkowski distance measure is also introduced and implemented to determine the weights of decision makers in the TOPSIS method, as well as to construct the prospect decision matrix and the distance matrix in the MABAC method, thereby enhancing computational precision. The applicability and effectiveness of the proposed method are demonstrated through a real-world case study on aircraft landing systems, and a sensitivity analysis is conducted to validate the robustness of the results. The findings highlight the method’s capability to reflect expert preferences more realistically and improve risk prioritization decisions in complex safety-critical systems.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1The role of cognitive flexibility and psychological well-being in the effect of mindfulness on problematic internet use
Yazıcı Çelebi, Gülin; Güngör, Sunay; Kaya, Feridun
With the widespread use of digital technologies today, the Internet has become an indispensable part of life but has also led to negative outcomes such as problematic internet use in some individuals. Problematic internet use is seen as a critical risk factor that negatively impacts individuals’ academic, social, and psychological functioning. Research has presented a lot of evidence in recent years that psychological resources, such as mindfulness, cognitive flexibility, and psychological well-being, play a noteworthy role in protecting individuals against such risky behaviors. This study aimed to examine the chain (serial) mediation roles of cognitive flexibility and psychological well-being in the effect of individuals’ mindfulness on problematic internet use. The majority of the participants in this study, using a cross-sectional, correlational design, were female (73.1%), their socio-economic level was moderate (70.4%), and their mothers (69.6%) and fathers (52.3%) had secondary school education. It was found that the majority of the participants used the Internet for 2–4 h a day (44.2%). Participant age ranged between 18 and 26 (Mean = 19.16, SD = 1.52). Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Mindfulness Scale, the Cognitive Flexibility Inventory, the Psychological Well-Being Scale, and the Problematic Internet Usage Scale. When the research findings were examined, it was found that mindfulness had a positive significant relationship with cognitive flexibility and psychological well-being. Negative significant relationships were observed between problematic internet use and mindfulness, cognitive flexibility, and psychological well-being. When the mediation analyses of the study were examined, it was determined that both cognitive flexibility and psychological well-being had mediation roles in the relationship between mindfulness and problematic internet use. In addition, it was revealed that cognitive flexibility and psychological well-being had a chain (serial) mediation role in the relationship between mindfulness and problematic internet use. It was determined that as the mindfulness levels of individuals increased, their cognitive flexibility and psychological well-being levels increased, too. On the other hand, it was observed that having high levels of mindfulness, cognitive flexibility, and psychological well-being decreased problematic internet use levels. In addition to these results, it was found that the relationship between mindfulness and problematic internet use was mediated by cognitive flexibility and psychological well-being. The findings obtained from the research were discussed in light of the literature, and various suggestions were made.

This study aimed to investigate, for the first time, the phytochemical composition, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and enzyme inhibitory properties of the methanolic extract of Gelasia sericea (Aucher ex DC.) Zaika, Sukhor. & N.Kilian. The extract demonstrated a moderate yield (6.55 g/100 g dry plant material) and was found to be rich in phenolic acids, particularly ferulic acid (17182.97 μg g-1), followed by caffeic acid, protocatechuic acid, and p-coumaric acid. Antioxidant analyses revealed high total phenolic (388.86 mg GA eq./100 g), total flavonoid (74.03 mg QE eq./100 g), and total antioxidant capacity (503.33 mg AA eq./100 g). The extract exhibited remarkable ABTS radical scavenging activity (95.99%, IC50 = 37.59 mg ml-1) and considerable ferric-ion reducing power (974.78 mg FeSO4 eq./100 g). Antimicrobial assays indicated moderate inhibitory effects, with stronger activity against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis) and the yeast Candida albicans, whereas Gram-negative bacteria were less susceptible. The extract’s MIC values ranged between 0.20-3.25 mg ml-1, and MLC values between 0.41-6.50 mg ml-1, which were higher than those of standard antibiotics. Enzyme inhibition assays revealed moderate activity against carbonic anhydrase II (IC50 = 0.0136 µg ml-1) and weak inhibition of cholinesterases and α-glucosidase, while α-amylase inhibition was relatively more pronounced (IC50 = 13350.00 µg ml-1). Overall, these findings highlight G. sericea as a valuable natural source of phenolic acids and antioxidants, with promising potential for applications in functional foods, nutraceuticals, and phytopharmaceuticals. However, the relatively limited antimicrobial and enzyme inhibitory activities suggest the need for further studies on bioavailability, in vivo efficacy, and compound isolation to optimize its practical applications.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Images of the Death Phenomenon: A Metaphorical Study on Earthquake Victims; [Ölüm Olgusuna Yönelik İmgeler: Depremzedeler Üzerine Metaforik Bir Araştırma]
Maraşlioğlu, Şerife Ericek; Kartopu, Saffet
In February 2023, two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 7.6 in magnitude struck 11 provinces, with their epicenter in Kahramanmaraş. These earthquakes have been described as the most significant disaster of the century, resulting in extensive structural damage and numerous casualties. Those who survived the earthquake faced death and experienced traumatic events. Concepts such as death are sensitive and complex, making them challenging to express without linguistic support. In this context, individuals often prefer to communicate their thoughts and feelings-essentially their abstract self-experience-through metaphorical expressions. This study aims to identify earthquake victims' metaphorical perceptions of death through qualitative and quantitative phenomenological and correlation analyses. The sample of the study consists of earthquake victims residing in Kahramanmaraş who were directly affected by the earthquakes of February 6, 2023, aged 18 and over, and who volunteered to participate in the interview, determined by purposive sampling. For the implementation of the study, ethical approval was obtained from the Gümüşhane University Rectorate, reference number 2024/3. A total of 291 participants voluntarily took part in the study. Data were collected using a semi-structured metaphorical perception form that included the prompt “Death is like/similar to…” along with sociodemographic variables. The data obtained were analysed using coding and categorisation methods to examine patterns and relationships of meaning in line with the research objectives. The findings revealed that participants generated 88 distinct valid metaphors related to the concept of death. Notably, participants focused on the metaphors of “end,” “restart,” and “gift,” while the category with the fewest metaphors was "reckoning time".

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Optimizing CPR performance: the role of body composition and ergonomic positioning
Aygun, Tayfun; Karaoglu, Olcay; Senturk, Hakan; Keskin, Arif; Yucel, Nurullah; Hekimoglu, Gulam
Background: Quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is associated with improved survival rates in prehospital arrest cases. Although CPR guidelines emphasize compression depth, rate, and recoil, individual anatomical and biomechanical factors influencing CPR performance remain underexplored. This study aims to determine the optimal CPR position by focusing on individual positional conditions and anthropometric data to improve CPR effectiveness and guide team member selection in emergency scenarios. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 123 paramedic associate degree students was conducted. Anthropometric measurements including upper extremity length, biceps circumference, and femur length were obtained. CPR performance was assessed using a feedback-capable mannequin, with data collected on compression depth, frequency, rhythm quality, and compression/decompression ratios. Positional parameters such as knee and hip angles, distance between knees, and distance from the mannequin were recorded and analyzed in relation to CPR outcomes. Results: Male participants demonstrated significantly higher CPR quality scores than females (65.09 ± 28.26 vs. 48.85 ± 27.11, p = 0.004). Positive correlations were found between BMI (r = 0.239, p = 0.008), upper extremity length (r = 0.364, p < 0.001), biceps circumference (r = 0.350, p < 0.001), and CPR quality metrics. A moderate inter-knee position (shoulder-width distance) provided superior compression depth and rhythm stability compared to narrow or wide positions (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Anthropometric and positional factors significantly influence CPR performance. Emergency team members with appropriate physical profiles (e.g., greater muscle mass, limb length, BMI) and adopting occupational ergonomic factors (e.g., moderate knee range, limited joint flexion) may improve CPR quality in the prehospital setting.

- MakaleYayıncıda açık erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Explainable artificial intelligence for rock discontinuity detection from point cloud with ensemble methods
Günen, Mehmet Akif
This study presents a framework for the semi-automatic detection of rock discontinuities using a three-dimensional (3D) point cloud (PC). The process begins by selecting an appropriate neighborhood size, a critical step for feature extraction from the PC. The effects of different neighborhood sizes (k = 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100) have been evaluated to assess their impact on classification performance. After that, 17 geometric and spatial features were extracted from the PC. Next, ensemble methods, AdaBoost.M2, random forest, and decision tree, have been compared with Artificial Neural Networks to classify the main discontinuity sets. The McNemar test indicates that the classifiers are statistically significant. The random forest classifier consistently achieves the highest performance with an accuracy exceeding 95% when using a neighborhood size of k = 100, while recall, F-score, and Cohen's Kappa also demonstrate high success. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP), an Explainable AI technique, has been used to evaluate feature importance and improve the explainability of black-box machine learning models in the context of rock discontinuity classification. The analysis reveals that features such as normal vectors, verticality, and Z-values have the greatest influence on identifying main discontinuity sets, while linearity, planarity, and eigenvalues contribute less, making the model more transparent and easier to understand. After classification, individual discontinuity sets were detected using a revised DBSCAN from the main discontinuity sets. Finally, the orientation parameters of the plane fitted to each discontinuity were derived from the plane parameters obtained using the Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC). Two real-world datasets (obtained from SfM and LiDAR) and one synthetic dataset were used to validate the proposed method, which successfully identified rock discontinuities and their orientation parameters (dip angle/direction).

Tek, Nilüfer Acar; Koçak, Tevfik; Yeşil, Süleyman; Sözen, Tevfik Sinan
Background: An accurate calculation of energy expenditure (REE) is necessary for estimating energy needs in malign prostate cancer. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the accuracy of the established novel equation for predicting REE in malign and benign prostate patients versus the accuracy of the previously used predictive equations based on REE measured by indirect calorimetry. Methods: The study was conducted as a cross-sectional case-control study and between December 2020 and May 2021 with 40 individuals over the age of 40 who applied to the Urology Clinic of Gazi University Faculty of Medicine. Subjects with 41 malign prostate and 42 benign prostate patients were both over the age of 40 (65.3 ± 6.30 years) and recruited for the study. Cosmed-FitMate GS Indirect Calorimetry with Canopyhood (Rome, Italy) was used to measure REE. A full body composition analysis and anthropometric measurements were taken. Clinical trial number: Not applicable. Results: Malign prostate group PSA Total and measured REE values (4.93 ± 5.44 ng/ml, 1722.9 ± 272.69 kcal/d, respectively) were statistically significantly higher than benign group (1.76 ± 0.73 ng/ml, 1670.5 ± 266.76 kcal/d, respectively) (p = 0.022). Malign prostate group (MPG) and benign prostate group (BPG) have the highest percentage of the accurate prediction value of Eq. 80.9% (novel equation MPG) and 64.2% (novel equation BPG). The bias of the equations varied from − 36.5% (Barcellos II Equation) to 19.2% (Mifflin-St. Jeor equation) for the malign prostate group and varied from − 41.1% (Barcellos II Equation) to 17.7% (Mifflin-St. Jeor equation) in the benign prostate group. The smallest root mean squared error (RMSE) values in the malign and benign prostate groups were novel equation MPG (149 kcal/d) and novel equation BPG (202 kcal/d). The new specific equation for malign prostate cancer: REE = 3192,258+ (208,326* body weight (WT)) - (20,285* height (HT)) - (187,549* fat free mass (FFM)) - (203,214* fat mass (FM)) + (4,194* prostate specific antigen total (PSAT)). The new specific equation for the benign prostate group is REE = 615,922+ (13,094*WT). Bland-Altman plots reveal an equally random distribution of novel equations in the malign and benign prostate groups. Conclusions: Previously established prediction equations for REE may be inconsistent. Utilising the PSAT parameter, we formulated novel energy prediction equations specific to prostate cancer. In any case, the novel predictive equations enable clinicians to estimate REE in people with malign and benign prostate groups with sufficient and most acceptable accuracy.

Methods: Twenty-four highly trained male soccer players (mean age: 20.6 ± 1.8 years) were randomly assigned to three groups: post-exercise casein ingestion group (PECIG; n = 8), pre-sleep casein ingestion group (PSCIG; n = 8), and control group (CG; n = 8). Following a standardized high-intensity resistance training protocol, participants consumed 30 g of micellar casein dissolved in 300 mL of water either immediately after exercise or 30–60 min before bedtime. Performance was assessed using the Countermovement Jump (CMJ), the Illinois Agility Test (IAT), and the Running-based Anaerobic Sprint Test (RAST), which were conducted both before and 24 h after the training session. Results: Repeated-measures ANOVA revealed significant group-by-time effects for CMJ (F = 8.21, p = 0.002, η2p = 0.36) and RAST performance variables, including peak power (F = 6.94, p = 0.003, η2p = 0.32), mean power (F = 7.42, p = 0.002, η2p = 0.34), and fatigue index (F = 5.87, p = 0.008, η2p = 0.28). Post hoc analyses showed that PSCIG significantly improved CMJ (Δ = +1.45 cm; p < 0.001, d = 2.04) and RAST mean power (Δ = +125.14 W; p = 0.002, d = 1.55) compared with the control condition. PECIG significantly enhanced RAST peak power (Δ = +205.79 W; p = 0.001, d = 1.64), mean power (Δ = +128.43 W; p = 0.013, d = 1.24), and fatigue index (Δ = +4.12 W/s; p = 0.010, d = 1.29) relative to CG. No performance differences were observed between PSCIG and PECIG timing conditions (all p > 0.05). Conclusions: Both pre-sleep and post-exercise casein ingestion enhanced anaerobic performance in highly trained soccer players, with each timing method favoring different performance outcomes. However, neither strategy demonstrated superiority over the other, suggesting that casein timing may be flexibly applied according to athletes’ preferences and training contexts.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ3A comprehensive analysis of the effect of BaO incorporation on Gamma-Ray attenuation characteristics in SiO₂-B₂O₃-SrO-ZrO₂ glass systems
Kaya, Selim
This work presents an analysis of the effect of BaO incorporation on the gamma-ray attenuation properties of systematically evaluated SiO₂-B₂O₃-SrO-ZrO₂ glass matrices. Radiation shielding parameters determined using XCOM and EGS4 calculation codes were compared. There was an increase in glass density from 5.84 g/cm3 to 6.32 g/cm3 when the BaO content rose from roughly 10% to 40%. Using sophisticated WinXCom and EGS-4 calculations, the mass attenuation values (µ/ρ) of BaO doped SiO₂-B₂O₃-SrO-ZrO₂ glass systems (abbreviated BaSiBSZ) were found. This study systematically and thoroughly evaluated the effect of BaO integration on the radiation shielding capabilities of the glass system over a wide range of gamma-ray photon energies, specifically between 59.5 keV and 1332 keV. Initially, HVL (half-value layer) and MFP (mean free path) values were derived from the calculated mass attenuation coefficients. The evaluation of several crucial shielding parameters, including RPE, Zeff, ΣR, and kγ, came next. The steady reduction of SrO oxide concentration and substitution of BaO in BaSiSBZ glass systems resulted in notable modifications in radiation protection properties. The BaSiBSZ glass systems showed a similar decrease in both HVL and MFP at a constant energy level as the BaO doping concentration was progressively raised. Concurrently, a notable enhancement was noted in RPE, Zeff, ΣR, and kγ coefficients. The results demonstrate that higher BaO concentrations greatly enhance the material's radiation-shielding capabilities, enhancing both photon and neutron attenuation and bolstering the overall performance of the glass system.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ3Inhibition Effect of Cordyceps sinensis (C. sinensis) Mycelium on Some Metabolic Enzymes and Investigation of Antioxidant Properties
Balcı, Neslihan
Cordyceps sinensis (CS), a traditional medicinal fungus, is a rich source of bioactive metabolites with pharmacological potential. This study investigated the inhibitory effects of CS mycelium on human carbonic anhydrase isoenzymes I and II (hCA I and hCA II) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), as well as its antioxidant properties. Enzyme inhibition was assessed using spectrophotometric methods, whereas antioxidant capacity was evaluated by DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC, FRAP, and Fe3⁺-reducing assays. LC-MS/MS analysis identified key secondary metabolites, including apigenin, apigenin-7-glucoside, (+)-taxifolin, dihydrokaempferol, p-coumaric acid, salicylic acid, and L-theanine, with apigenin as the major constituent. CS strongly inhibited hCA I (IC50 = 1.11 µg/mL) and hCA II (IC50 = 1.77 µg/mL), exceeding the potency of acetazolamide, and also showed relevant AChE inhibition (IC50 = 8.00 µg/mL), comparable to tacrine. Antioxidant assays revealed moderate DPPH activity but strong ABTS and CUPRAC reducing capacities, indicating the structural contributions of flavonoids and phenolic acids. These findings suggest that CS possess dual bioactivity through enzyme inhibition and antioxidant effects, highlighting its therapeutic potential against neurodegenerative and oxidative stress–related diseases.
- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ2Oriental beech (Fagus orientalis L.) steaming condensate: phenolic composition and functional activities
Akmeşe, Osman; Sivrikaya, Hüseyin; Baltacı, Cemalettin
This study presents a comprehensive investigation of the bioactive properties of the condensate formed during the steaming treatment of beech wood (Fagus orientalis L.). The phenolic compound profile, antioxidant capacity, enzyme inhibition, and antimicrobial activity of the condensate were evaluated using multiple analytical methods. Rich in total phenolic content (339.20 mg GAE/g) and flavonoid levels (79.74 mg QE/g), the condensate exhibited strong reducing power in the ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP), while demonstrating moderate radical scavenging activity in the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2′-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline 6-sulfonic acid)) tests. In antimicrobial assessments, the condensate was found to be effective against Gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus as well as Candida albicans as a pathogen fungus, while showing lower activity against Gram-negative bacteria. Its antifungal efficacy was found to be notable when compared to nystatin. Although the IC₅₀ value of the condensate in α-amylase inhibition assays (1320.00 µg/mL) was weaker than that of the reference inhibitor acarbose (33.26 µg/mL), the results indicate its potential as a plant-based enzyme inhibitor candidate. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy revealed characteristic peaks associated with lignin derivatives, carbohydrates, and ester bonds in the condensate. LC–MS/MS analyses identified chlorogenic acid (1581.65 µg/g) as the major phenolic compound, along with ferulic acid and rosmarinic acid. Beech steaming condensate stands out as a valuable bioactive resource in the context of industrial by-product valorization. With its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and enzyme-inhibitory properties, it holds promising potential for applications in the food preservation, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. These findings may contribute to the sustainability of the forest industry from a circular economy perspective.
