    MUSHROOM MANAGEMENT APPROACH

    Kiliç, Taskin; Olgun, Hatun

The concept of Mushroom Management has been involved in the management science in recent years and is named after the metaphor of raising mushrooms. Just as mushrooms are fertilized, left in the dark and cultivated in a short time; mushroom managers also provide the necessary business resources to employees, however, they do not share the policies, revenues of the organization and business risks with them. The objective of study is to embrace and examine the concept of mushroom management theoretically, develop an assessment instrument for determining this perception and bring the concept and the scale in the Turkish literature. The theoretical part was formed by using the limited number of studies in literature. Field study was conducted by applying a questionnaire to 200 employees at a private health institution in the province of Trabzon with the help of an 8 point Likert scale, which was developed for measuring the concept of mushroom management. The acquired data were analyzed by using the SPSS and LISREL softwares. It was determined that study participants had moderate level of mushroom management perception. 58% of employees who participated in the study stated that the management did not establish a direct communication with junior employees and share all the information about the organization. On the other hand, a Turkish scale of eight items measuring the mushroom management perception was developed within the scope of this study. Besides, as mushroom management contains total opposite applications of open, democratic, participative and transparent management applications; it is perceived as a negative approach. However, it might turn into a useful means for managers in some cases (like preventing chaos, preserving the organization's confidentiality) in practice.

Study objective: Our aim was to determine the efficiency of ultrasound (US) scanning in patients with wrist trauma admitted to the emergency department and to compare US diagnostic usagewith other radiological imagingmethods. Methods: Patients who presented to the emergency department with wrist injury and who met the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria were eligible. For all patients, US evaluation of thewhole wristwas performed by an emergency physician before other radiological imagingmethods (radiographies, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging). All of the patients included in the study underwent US, radiography, CT, and MR. Results: During the study, 122 patients were admitted with a wrist injury. After filtering for the exclusion criteria, 80 patients were included in the study. The sensitivity of US scanning in detecting fractures was 95.31% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 87.1-98.39), the specificity was 93.75% (95% CI: 71.67-98.89), and the positive predictive value was 98.39% (95% CI: 91.72-99.85), and the negative predictive value was 83.33% (95% CI: 72.98-90.41). The sensitivity of US scanning in detecting tendon and ligamentous structural injury was 66.67% (95% CI: 41.71-84.82), the specificity was 100% (95% CI: 94.42-100), the positive predictive valuewas 100% (95% CI: 94.29-99.89), and the negative predictive was 92.86% (95% CI: 84.25-97.14). Conclusion: US scanning is an effective method that can be applied in the emergency department to adult patients to diagnose distal forearm and carpal bones fractures. In soft tissue injuries, US and MR examinations produce similar results. (C) 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Late Jurassic Magmatism and Stratigraphy in the Eastern Sakarya Zone, Turkey: Evidence for the Slab Breakoff of Paleotethyan Oceanic Lithosphere

Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Aydinçakir, Emre; Kandemir, Raif; Karsli, Orhan; Siebel, Wolfgang; Derman, Ahmet Sami; Turan, Mehmet

Middle-Late Jurassic Cimmerian events in Turkey have been actively discussed in the past three decades, but proposed tectonic models associated with magmatism, metamorphism, and stratigraphic features remain controversial. To address this issue, Upper Jurassic mafic lavas are investigated at three locations (Alucra, Gumushane, and Olur) in the eastern Sakarya Zone, northeastern Turkey. These lavas are submarine and form planar flows parallel with the bedding plane in the Upper Jurassic carbonate sequence near the base or just below in the clastic sedimentary rocks. The basaltic lavas show calc-alkaline features and possess Nb-Ta values and Nb/U, Nb/La, and Ce/Pb ratios that are greater than those of island arc basalts. Multielement patterns are almost hump shaped, similar to ocean island basalts, which experience Pb depletion and weak negative Nb-Ta, Zr-Hf, and Ti anomalies. The low initial (Sr-87/Sr-86) ratios (0.70372-0.70554), positive initial epsilon(Nd) values (+2.7 to +4.4), and initial Pb isotope ratios that plot between mid-ocean-ridge and ocean island basalts are consistent with a melt derived from subcontinental lithospheric mantle, metasomatized by earlier fluids from subducted sediments and plume materials from the asthenosphere. Moderate Dy/Yb ratios with an average value of 1.8 imply partial melting in the spinel-garnet transition zone at depths of similar to 70-100 km. Slab breakoff is suggested as a geodynamic mechanism that accounts for these geochemical signatures. This inference is also favored by stratigraphic and sedimentologic evidence from the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, which is consistent with short-lived vertical (epirogenic) movements in the region. Lower-Middle Jurassic sequences are transgressive, suggesting that subduction-related extension opened a backarc basin (Neotethys) in the south of the Sakarya Zone. Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous carbonates point tectonically to tranquility during carbonate deposition in the Neotethys Ocean, which seems to have been achieved by complete closure of the Paleotethys in the north. About 15-20 m.yr. later (Kimmeridgian), after first carbonate deposition, intraplate-typemafic lavas ascended up to the shelf surface of the Neotethys. This was followed by formation of disconformity surfaces and then accumulation of coarse clastic sediments. All this points to a short-lived epirogenic movement that we ascribe to the breakoff of the southward-subducting Paleotethyan oceanic lithosphere in the Late Jurassic.

Finite Modeling Updating Effects on the Dynamic Response of Building Models

    Günaydin, M.; Adanur, S.; Altunisik, A. C.; Sevim, B.; Bayraktar, A.

An improved finite element model was used to obtain more accurate modeling of engineering structures. The main goal of this paper was to determine how this improved modeling procedure affects the dynamic response of buildings based on experimental modal parameters such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios. For experimental assessment, three small, one-story, two-bay, reinforced concrete buildings with raft foundation were constructed under laboratory conditions. The initial three-dimensional finite element models, built with the ANSYS software, were used to analytically identify modal parameters, including natural frequencies and mode shapes. Following the analytical study, the ambient vibration tests were performed to obtain modal parameters, experimentally. The enhanced frequency domain decomposition method and the stochastic subspace identification method were used to identify the modal parameter. The analytical and experimental modal parameters were compared and then initial finite element models were updated to minimize the differences by changing of some uncertain parameters such as materials properties. With model updating, the maximum difference between the measured and initially obtained frequency was reduced from 28.47 to 4.88%. To show the model updating effect on dynamic response of building models, dynamic analysis with the experimental computed damping ratios and 5% damping ratio were carried out using 1992 Erzincan earthquake ground motion record. For the experimental damping ratios, the maximum differences in the displacements and stresses between the initial and updated models were obtained as 23 and 32%, respectively. These differences were calculated as 43 and 15 % for the 5 % damping ratio. Comparisons of dynamic analyses results for the initial and updated model show that the finite element model updating affects the dynamic response of the buildings considerably.

Cordierite-bearing strongly peraluminous Cebre Rhyolite from the eastern Sakarya Zone, NE Turkey: Constraints on the Variscan Orogeny

Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Külekçi, Elif; Aydinçakir, Emre; Kandemir, Raif; Alçiçek, M. Cihat; Pecha, Mark E.; Sünnetçi, Kadir

The Cebre Rhyolite with an outcropping area up to 12 km(2) is one of the rare extrusions in the Variscan basement of the Sakarya Zone. The unit consists of high-K calc alkaline rhyolites (SiO2 = 74-82 wt.%). Abundant phenocrysts of quartz and K-feldspar are accompanied by subordinate cordierite phenocrysts, rare muscovite microphenocrysts and biotite microcrysts set in a fine-grained groundmass. Three types of rock fragments (xenoliths) have been recognized; (i) porphyritic, (ii) equigranular hypabyssal and (iii) hypocrystalline fragments. Zircon U-Pb dating indicates that the Cebre Rhyolite was extruded at 332.8 +/- 4.38 Ma, which post-dates the Variscan low temperature metamorphism and pre-dates the emplacement of I-type granitic intrusions (325-303 Ma).The samples are strongly peraluminous with A/CNK values ranging from 1.48 to 2.95 and A/NK from 1.49 to 2.99. They have very high K2O (3.72-7.42 wt.%) and Al2O3 (10.77-14.11 wt.%) contents, but very low CaO (0.02-0.21 wt.%), Na2O (0.05-0.78 wt.%) and MgO (0.3-0.21 wt.%) contents. The samples show geochemical affinity with the upper continental crust, e.g., enrichment of large ion lithophile elements (LILEs; K, Rb, U, Th, Pb), depletion of high field strength elements (HFSEs; Nb, Ta, Ti), Sr, P and Eu, but epsilon Nd-(t) values (- 3.06 to - 8.75) and isotope ratios of Sr-(t)((87) Sr/Sr-86 = 0.70499-0.70915) and Pb-(t) (Pb-206/Pb-204 = 16.41-17.570, Pb-207/Pb-204 = 15.54-15.59, Pb-208/Pb-204 = 36.20-37.22) are similar to those of the lower crust. Geochemical and isotope data indicate that the Cebre Rhyolite was generated by melting of metapelitic rocks with some addition of intermediate metaigneous derived magma. As a geodynamic model, we propose that the Variscan Orogeny in Turkey was occurred by collision of Gondwana with an arc/terrane separated from the southern margin of Laurussia. This collision was followed shortly after by splitting of oceanic lithosphere into two pieces and sinking down into asthenosphere. Rapid upwelling of asthenosphere to space emptied by previous oceanic lithosphere provided heat for high temperature metamorphism and anatexis of metasedimentary rocks in the crust. Atayan, Yahya; Hacisalihoglu, Payam

Introduction: Helicobacter pylori are a microaerophile gram-negative bacteria and the most frequent factor of chronic gastritis. Recently, there has been an inclination to various non-invasive tests to determine the severity of H. pylori infection in the gastric tissue. The serum neutrophils/lymphocytes rate (NLR) is a simple, safe, non-invasive and active inflammation reagent. The purpose of this study is examining the correlation between the increase in the positivity/severity of H. pylori infection and the increase in the NLR. Material and method: 149 patients were included into the study by considering the Sydney criteria in accordance with H. pylori severity degrees in 3 groups; Mild (n=49), Moderate-Severe (n=67) and Severe (n=33). A Control Group was also formed (n=22) with negative H. pylori by three experienced pathologists. Result: It has been determined that the severity has increased among the groups with H. pylori positive as regard to the increase in serum NLR (r: 0.295, p: 0.017), there has been a significant correlation has been determined between the Control Group and the Moderate-Severe patients (p:0.014), the Severe patients (p:0.002). Conclusion: It is suggested that the serum NLR, which can be used in order to predict the severity of the H. pylori Infection in patients with chronic gastritis, can be a practical, inexpensive and non-invasive test.

Effect of Ambient Conditions on Monthly Performances of Three Different PV Arrays

Özden, Talat; Akinoglu, Bulent G.; Turan, Rasit; Martinez, V; Gonzalez, J

Solar PV cells may be mainly divided into two parts as crystalline and thin film. Mono-crystalline silicon (e.g. Mono-Si) and microcrystalline based amorphous silicon and other thin films (e.g. gc-Si/a-Si and CdTe thin films) are widely used PV cells in the arrays. The outdoor performances of these systems depend on some climatic parameters and conditions, and it is important to understand how the monthly efficiencies vary with these parameters. In the present study, the data obtained from three grid connected PV arrays of Mono Si, a-Si/p.c-Si and CdTe thin film that were operated for 41 months in Ankara-Turkey is analyzed. The results showed that Mono-Si an-ay performance depends on the 5 parameters of outdoor climatic conditions while a-Si/gc-Si and CdTe thin film arrays performances arc not significantly affected by the variation of the climatic parameters. The possible reasons are discussed in details.

THE EFFECT OF THE STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT TOOLS ON SMES' FIRM PERFORMANCE

Bingöl, Dursun; Filizöz, Berrin; Koparan, Emrah; Okan, Tarhan; Çapkulaç, Onur; Ozsahin, M

Growing importance of notions of productivity and efficiency which generates basic focus and domain of firms the attention for strategic management have been increasing. This increasing attention is also resulting in increasing competition and changes in its formation. Markets have switched into regional or international rather than local and national. Firms need to have a strategic point of view and use strategic management tools. The above-mentioned concepts are generally used in big firms. However, small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) have an important role in countries' economies thanks to their contribution to social development and employment. In Turkey, 99% of firms are SME. Regarding the importance of SMEs in the country's economy, this study aims to reveal if owners/managers of SMEs know about strategic management tools, if they know which tools they use, levels of satisfaction with these tools and which tools they plan to use in the future. Additionally, the study seeks priorities of owners/managers when choosing a strategic management tool and effect of level of using these tools on firm performance. Regionalisation of discharges having certain exceedance probabilities and Eastern Black Sea Basin sample

    Saka, Fatih; Yüksek, Omer

In many of water engineering studies, it is necessary to determine the amount of water or the probability of discharge at a certain value. However, current discharge measurements are limited and located in discharge gauging stations (DGS). Flow duration curves (FDC) belonging to each DGS can be obtained, but it is necessary to estimate discharge values of the areas having no or insufficient discharge data. For this purpose, studies based on the regionalization of discharge values can be applied. In this study, discharge values of 39 DGS located on Eastern Black Sea Basin in Turkey, and temperature and precipitation of weather stations in the region have been obtained. Drainage areas have been determined. Total annual precipitation and temperature values of DGS have been obtained by using Thiessen method. Values having 20%, 30%, 50%, and 90% exceedance probabilities of annual FDC, have also been correlated with basin characteristics using 10-year average daily discharges. Drainage area, drainage density and mean slope of tributary values were chosen as topographic; and mean annual precipitation height and annual temperature values chosen as climatic parameters. As a result, in the ungauged areas, 20%, 30%, 50%, and 90% exceedance probabilities of annual FDC have been estimated by some basin properties and the results were examined.

Bipolar resistive switching and conduction mechanism of an Al/ZnO/Al-based memristor

    Gul, Fatih; Efeoglu, Hasan

In this study, a direct-current reactive sputtered AliZnO/Al-based memristor device was fabricated and its resistive switching (RS) characteristics investigated. The optical and structural properties were confirmed by using UV vis spectrophotometry and x-ray diffraction, respectively. The memristive and resistive switching characteristics were determined using time dependent current voltage (I-V-t) measurements. The typical pinched hysteresis I-V loops of a memristor were observed. In addition, the device showed forming-free, uniform and bipolar RS behavior. The low electric field region exhibited ohmic conduction, while the Schottky emission (SE) was found to be the dominant conduction mechanism in the high electric field region. A weak Poole-Frenkel (PF) emission also appeared. In conclusion, it was suggested that the SE and PF mechanisms were related to the oxygen vacancies in the ZnO. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. A Day Ahead Hourly Solar Radiation Forecasting by Artificial Neural Networks: A Case Study for Trabzon Province

Çevik, Sibel; Çakmak, Recep; Altas, Ismail Hakk

The integration of renewable energy sources to the electrical grid leads to some issues in the grid because of intermittent and variable characteristics of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. It has been predicted that the solar based electricity production will has highest annual increase rate among the other renewable sources. Due to the intermittent and volatile nature of the solar energy in an electricity grid where photovoltaic systems are intensive, load planning is essential. Therefore, day ahead solar radiation forecasting will contribute to the load planning studies. Artificial neural networks are one of the methods that are applied frequently and successfully in forecasting studies. In this study, a cause effect based artificial neural network (ANN) has been designed and performed for day ahead hourly solar radiation forecasting in Trabzon province. A similar day selection algorithm has been utilized to get more accurate forecasting by the ANN. The designed ANN has been trained and tested in MATLAB simulation environment without using ready codes of MATLAB ANN toolbox. The obtained results reveal that the designed ANN forecasts the solar radiation with acceptable error for a place such as Trabzon which has rainy and cloudy weather conditions.

Turan, Ibrahim; Demir, Selim; Aliyazicioglu, Rezzan; Aliyazicioglu, Yuksel

Primula vulgaris belongs to the genus Primula and this genus is frequently used in traditional medicine. Numerous studies reported the antioxidant and cytotoxic effects of various extracts of different Primula species but, there were limited studies of the antioxidant and cytotoxic effect of P. vulgaris. The aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant properties and cytotoxic effects of dimethyl sulfoxide extract of leaves of P. vulgaris. The total polyphenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and reducing antioxidant power of extract were evaluated using spectrophotometric procedures. The cytotoxic effects of extract were revealed on human lung (A549), liver (HepG2), breast (MCF-7), prostate (PC-3), and colon (WiDr) cancer cell lines and normal fibroblast cells using thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. TPC and FRAP values were 1890.1 +/- 11.2 mg gallic acid equivalents and 3233.1 +/- 176.2 mg trolox equivalents per 100 g sample, respectively. The extract showed selective cytotoxic effects on all studied cancer cell lines compared to normal fibroblast cells and IC50 values ranged from 133.3-253.8 mu g/mL. This is the first study to reveal the antioxidant properties of P. vulgaris leaf extract and its cytotoxic effect on cancer cell lines. Further studies are now needed to identify the antioxidant and cytotoxic molecules in the extract and their mechanisms.
