Hikikomori: The Problematic of Escape and Isolation of the Modern Culture from Social Reality to Digital Orientations

    Demir, Sertaç Timur

This paper deals with the phenomenon Hikikomori that has risen especially in Japan and other far-east countries and has acquired a global dimension each passing day. Hikikomori, which defines those who lock themselves in their room and who never go out of the room under the influence of socialisation factors such as education, occupation and family, can be interpreted as a symptom of technology and competition-based modern culture; so much so that today numerous parents even in Turkey complain about their children who are isolated to their world, who cannot communicate, who do not take responsibility and who lose themselves in technology-related orientations such as virtual identities in social networks, computer games, electronic consumption and online gambling. The case of Hikikomori that has been increased among the youth indicates both withdrawal and disengagement from external world. This article that aims to examine the causes as well as results of Hikikomori analyses the Japanese society-centred question as a sort of common trend that touches upon the contemporary world beyond locality. That is why, although essential references of this qualitative study is based on the far-eastern texts and films, its arguments and findings are about the liquid and fragile modernity that covers Turkish society.

Body, violence and sexualisation in the modern visual culture

    Demir, Sertaç Timur

In this paper that consists essentially of contemporary academic disciplines such as media, visual culture and sociology, it is dealt with modern tendencies of sexualisation in the context of body and violence both as a common question in everyday life, and as a characteristic of the contemporary society we all live in. The issue can also be seen as one of the most representative or reflective indications of modern culture. In here, it is claimed that not only economy, politics, education, ideology, equality, legislation and religion, but also the earlysexualisation of the present-day society are associated with gender-based violence, consumerism and communication. This association carry undoubtedly considerable and complicated notion in terms of making analysis through reductive interpretations and approaches. Therefore, in this literature survey-based theoretical article, this perspective is embodied and categorised as psychological/mental, conceptual/ontological, sexual/physical, cultural, occupational and educational contexts. These subtopics that constitute the frame of the study are both cause and effect of the spiral of violence and consumerism that is fictionalised around the modernday culture.

Cemil meriç ve ali şeriati’nin eserlerinde batı kültürü eleştirisi

    Demir, Sertaç Timur

This paper is an attempt to describe the contemporary debates in sociology in the context of Ali Shariati and Cemil Meriç who are significant but not popular scholars of the Eastern intellectual world by making comparison with some Western thinkers and issues. In this way, it is dealt with some typical modern sociological matters and criticise indirectly the West-oriented worldview. For this purpose, it is also focused on the question of how the Eastern scholars approach some debates from objectivity to value-judgment; from equality to class conflict; from religion to freedom; from genocide to the problem of intellectuality; and from security to power. At this point it should be underlined that the concepts East and West do not refer to geographical distance but to socio-cultural and ideological differentiation. It is not coincidence that these differentiations are portrayed in the context of essential scholars like Cemil Meriç and Ali Shariati who both internalise the West and, despite this, turn their faces to the East because these two thinkers have significant worth and background in reaching the roots of this civilisation and in constructing the future

A Study on Representation Places in the Present-Day Culture

    Demir, Sertaç Timur

This paper focuses on some representation places as a sort of effort to understand and interpret the culture we live in. In fact, analysing any culture form requires concentrating on places where that culture reveals itself. Each place and each detail that penetrates into that place involve basic signs of social reality; that is why, all these should be seen not only as architectural or geographical expressions but also as multidimensional data and even as strong arguments of sociological enquiry, which stimulates interdisciplinary analysis. In this study, places are categorised and debated as places of production, places of consumption and places of time in order to portray the modern culture that represents both the age and life-style. In this sense, factories, offices, skyscrapers, sites, shopping malls, hospitals, airports, squares, museums and cemeteries are dealt with through the works of Bachelard, Baudrillard, Bauman, Botton, Lefebvre and Harvey

The Sociology of Escaping from the City and Going far away in the Modern Culture

    Demir, Sertaç Timur

This article focuses on the nature that has turned into a kind of salvation recipe in recent years through bodily, temporal and spatial experiences. The modern individual who once desired urban-style life now gets bored of it and embarks on new quests. Today the centre of the orientation is nature. In this sense, it is high time to debate the story of returning that take places on distant geographies because the expectations of those who migrated to big cities with dreams have been tested, then they had disappointments and once left villages started to be missed again after years. In this context, the nature and province as the place of past and memory are conceived as untouched and intact and as an absolute antithesis of the city. The main question that rises here is whether or not the virgin and purified nature is excluded by the modern society figuration that centralises the urbanisation. In other words, is escaping to the nature or returning the province a permanent solution or temporary solace? All these ambivalent questions constitute the framework of this study.

The Stranger to Time: What a Collector Stands for in a Hurried Society

    Demir, Sertaç Timur

City-dwellers who are threatened by the risk of natural or social disasters are in search of safer houses. Each attempt to satisfy their need for safety, however, turns into another version of the security problem; so much so that, escaping from risk itself turns into different (yet nevertheless more powerful) risks. The film 10 to 11 (2009) focuses on the socio-spatial conflict between a stranger and his neighbours who are anxious about a possible earthquake risk in Istanbul. Mithat, the protagonist of the film, is a stranger not only to place but essentially to time. He lives within time and understands place as an essential means loaded by temporal experiences and memories. This paper deals with the multiple dichotomies between time and memory, between risk and fear, between aesthetics and security, and between attachment and profit in the context of urban transformation. The stranger, who is analysed for the first time as a temporal being in this paper, is discussed using Zygmunt Bauman’s concepts of uncertainty and liquid modernity, Richard Sennett’s capitalism, Ulrich Beck’s risk society, Frank Furedi’s culture of fear, Stephen Bertman’s hurried culture, Elias Canetti’s death, Giorgio Agamben’s forgotten and gone, Svetlana Boym’s nostalgia, and Halbwachs, Assmann, Connerton, and Arendt’s memory, as well as around the temporal spaces of museums, bibliopoles, antique shops, and cemeteries.
