Kaya, Elif Çelenk; Demircioʇlu, Zeynep; Kaya, Afşin Ahmet; Büyükgüngör, Orhan
A suitable single crystal of Co(II)bis(3,4 dimethoxybenzoate)bis(nicotinamide) dihydrate, formulated as C30H38N4O14Co,(I). According to experimental data, the complex can be characterized in the solid state as mononuclear, with a distorted octahedral stereochemistry. The distorted octahedral stereochemistry adopted by the complex was further confirmed by the x-ray structure analysis of current study, which consists of a six-coordinate Co atom in a distorted octahedral environment constructed from two N atoms and four O atoms. The title compound which has been characterized by IR, UV, and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis at 296 K crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C 2/c with a = 27.9402(15) Å, b = 8.6005(3)Å, c = 14.7921(9)Å, α = 90°, β = 108.849(4)°, and γ = 90°, Z = 4. The molecular structure and geometry have also been optimized using B3LYP density functional theory method employing the 6-31G (d) basis set. The molecular electrostatic potential (MEP), frontier molecular orbitals (FMO) analysis, nonlinear optical properties (NLO), and natural bond analysis (NBO) for the title molecule are also described from the computational process.
- MakaleYalnız künye2015eNOS and iNOS trigger apoptosis in the brains of sheep and goats naturally infected with the border disease virus
Dincel, Gungor Cagdas; Kul, Oguz
In this study, apoptotic and anti-apoptotic mechanisms and if present, which pathway to trigger the apoptosis in the brains of Border Disease Virus (BDV) infected lambs (n=10) and goat kids (n=5) were investigated. Briefly, apoptotic (caspase 3, caspase 9) and anti-apoptotic markers (Bcl-2), cytokine response (TNF-α, INF-γ), reactive gliosis and myelin loss were examined. eNOS, iNOS, caspase 9, caspase 3 and GFAP expressions were higher in BDV infected tissues compared to control animals (6 kids and 6 lambs) (p<0.05). Double immunoperoxidase test revelaed that TUNEL positive apoptotic cells showed significant association with increased eNOS-iNOS and iNOS-BDV expressions. However, no significant differences were found for TNFR1, TNF-α and INF-γ expressions in BD (p>0.05). There was a positive correlation between the intensity of myelin loss, GFAP activity and severity of infection. Inconclusion, as a novel finding, it is established that eNOS and iNOS overexpressions are coassociated with apoptosis in BDV infected neurons and neuroglia. The results also strongly suggested that BDV infected apoptotic cells mainly prefer the intrinsic pathway that might be most likely related to increased nitric oxide levels.

Maden, Nafiz; Öztürk, Serkan
In this paper, we analyze the relationships between the seismic b-values, Bouguer gravity and heat flow data in the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey. For this purpose, spatial distributions of b-value, Bouguer gravity and heat flow have been presented for different depths and locations. In distinction to previous studies which have used only two parameters (gravity and seismic b-value or heat flow and seismic b-value), we have combined seismic b-values, Bouguer gravity and heat flow data to determine the new results on the active tectonics of the Eastern Anatolia region. Our analysis shows that there are significant and robust correlations amidst the heat flow data, Bouguer gravity anomaly and seismic b-values. The crustal structure is thick in areas where the large negative gravity anomalies and low b-values are observed. On the contrary, the regions with positive gravity anomalies and high b-values are likely to be associated with magma chambers or crustal low-velocity zones. We also provide some evidence suggesting that high b-values and high heat flow values can be related to the magmatic activities beneath the volcanic chain in the Eastern Pontide orogenic belt. Consequently, we have reached some conclusions for the Eastern Anatolia region: (1) The Moho to surface is rather thick and earthquakes are relatively smaller beneath the volcanic chain where the high heat flow values are observed, (2) a southward subduction model could have existed for the development of the Pontides during the late Mesozoic–Cenozoic era, (3) hot and unstable mantle lid zones or a lithosphere deprived of mantle under the study region is much more plausible, (4) a southward movement of the subduction plate and a northward extension of the Black Sea increase the state of stress along the trench axis and decrease the b-value, and (5) these movements may load the stress energy to the fault zones, thereby causing the catastrophic earthquakes in the Eastern Anatolia region.

Corumluoglu, Ozsen; Vural, Alaaddin; Asri, Ibrahim
Kula Region (Manisa, Turkey), with its 80 volcanic cones, lava flows, basalt plateaus and basalt columns, fairy chimney formations in canyons carved by the Gediz River, shelter cities hidden in volcanic lava, footprint fossils belonging to the first humans, and geological uniqueness, has a great importance in terms of geotourism potential as it is being a natural heritage in the Aegean region of Anatolia. In this study, some remote sensing image processing techniques such as band combination, band rationing, and principal component analyses were used to depict the cultural and natural geosite known as Kula basalts in Turkey. Satellite images utilized here in this study were Landsat band images (band 1 to band 7). Principal component analyses (PCA) were performed on the first ratio group with 5/4, 5/1, and 3/7 bands and then on the second ratio group with 3/1, 4/5, and 3/2 bands. As a conclusion and outcome of this PCA, it was found that red, green, and blue (RGB) composite with PC1 and PC3 gray-level images from the first ratio group and PC2 gray-level image from the second group showed up the basalt areas better than those from other techniques studied in this research. After unsupervised classification of this final composite of PCA, it is computed that the basalt rocks in Kula cover an area of 36,774 ha totally.

Tingoy, Ozhan; Isikli, Sevki; Gumushane, Ali Ozcan
Improvements in information and communication technologies have evolved the way of traditional broadcasting. This evolvement is currently being experienced in press, eliminating the specific and clear lines of every kind of medium. Changing news production/distribution process as well as readers' consumption tendencies have brought up some kind of negative presumptions related with the future of press. Taken into consideration on the level of widespread newspapers, this evolvement is siginificant in respect of the future of local newspapers which count around 1400 in Turkey, trying to survive financial reasons. Fullfilling the evolvement triggered by information and communication technologies successfully, local newspapers are now expected to fulfill their alternative journalism mission against global media contents with the help of new media environment.
- MakaleYalnız künye2015Gamma ray spectrometry for recognition of hydrothermal alteration zones related to a low sulfidation epithermal gold mineralization (eastern Pontides, NE Türkiye)
Maden, Nafiz; Akaryali, Enver
This study presents an interpretation of radiospectrometric and magnetic data of Arzular mineralization site, which is one of the best examples for epithermal gold deposits located in the southern zone of the Eastern Pontides (NE Türkiye). Potassium is generally the most useful pathfinder element for gold mineralization zones because of its high level in altered rock surrounding the deposits. Where gold is hosted within quartz veins, typically the vein is low in the radioelements, but the hydrothermally altered host rocks will usually have a distinct radioelement signature useful for exploration. In this study, magnetic, susceptibility and radiospectrometric survey data radiometric signatures associated with the host rocks favorable for the mineralization, enhancing techniques such as the ratio maps as well as potassium (%K), equivalent thorium (eTh ppm) and equivalent uranium (eU ppm) maps were utilized. Our analysis showed that the gold mineralization associated with the alteration is significantly related to increase in potassium, due to adularia, a low T K-feldspar, and decreases in uranium and thorium due to the hydrothermal alteration and magmatic intrusion processes during the regional tectonic activities.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2015Preparation and characterization of electroless Ni-B/nano-SiO2, Al2O3, TiO2 and CuO composite coatings
Ekmekci, Dursun; Bülbül, Ferhat
Ni-B/SiO2, Al2O3, TiO2 and CuO composite coatings were successfully obtained by the electroless plating technique. Dispersible SiO2, Al2O3, TiO2 and CuO nanoparticles were co-deposited with electroless Ni-B coating onto AISI-304 steel substrates. Deposits were characterized for its structural properties by X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD results showed a broad peak of Ni-B and low intensity composite nanoparticle peaks. The surface and cross-section morphology of samples were analysed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Surface analysis showed that the incorporation in Ni-B matrix of nano-SiO2, Al2O3, TiO2 and CuO particles increases the nodularity of composite coatings. The deposits are composed of a columnar structure grown along the vertical direction of the substrate surface. The results also show that electroless nanocomposite coatings tend to have greater microhardness compared with the coating without nanoparticles. The increase in the microhardness of the nanocomposite coatings reported in this study is attributed to an effect of dispersion strengthening of ceramic particles in the Ni-B matrix.

Çelebi, S.; Ozturk, A.; Uysal, E.; Kutuk, S.; Duzgun, I.
The evolution of the rate of flux creep along the major hysteresis envelopes in a Y0.5Lu0.5Ba2Ca3Oy sample synthesized by a modified melt powder melt growth (MPMG) method at 25 K has been investigated. Magnetic relaxation rates depend strongly on the prior magnetic history. Calculations based on the critical state model can reproduce quite well the experimental data for magnetization when we have chosen the field exponent n = 0.3 in critical current density, Jc(Ha) = Jc0/(Ha−IM)n, where IM = Ha when 0 < H < Hc1 and (Formula presented.) when Ha ≥ Hc1. Using the field-cooled magnetization MFC data as well as the comparison of experimental and calculated M–H hysteresis loop, we estimated Hc1 = 500 Oe, p = 0, and the penetration field H∗ = 20 kOe. The apparent pinning energy was estimated as 62 meV for the remanent magnetization upon an excursion of 40 kOe.
- MakaleYalnız künye2015An integrated evaluation model for service quality of hospitals: A case study from Turkey
Baki, Birdogan; Peker, Iskender
In this paper, an integrated approach, in which Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) and Fuzzy TOPSIS (FTOPSIS) is used, is proposed to rank the hospitals according to service quality from the patient's point of view. The FAHP is employed to determine the weights of service quality criteria for the hospitals, and FTOPSIS method is used to rank the hospitals. Empirical results show that when "reliability" is the most important criterion, "empathy" is the least important criterion in terms of hospital service quality. A sensitivity analysis is also applied to check how sensitive our model is to changes in the various criteria weights.

ABSTRACT: In the present study, Cd(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) ions were separated and preconcentrated via carrier element-free coprecipitation (CEFC) method by using an organic coprecipitating agent, 1,2-bis-(2-tosyl ethoxy) benzene (BTEB), prior to their flame atomic absorption spectrometric (FAAS) detections. The experimental conditions were optimized in terms of pH of the aqueous solution, BTEB amount, standing time, centrifugation rate and time, and sample volume. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the detection limits for Cd(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) ions were found to be 0.13, 0.67, and 0.46 μg L−1, respectively, and the relative standard deviations for the analyte ions were found to be lower than 4.0%. The accuracy of the method was tested by analyzing certified reference material and spike tests. The method was applied to determine the levels of Cd(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) ions in sea and stream water, macaroni, red lentil, and cracked wheat samples.
- MakaleYalnız künye2015Determination to Results of Forest Management Planning Applications with Land Use Changes from 1971 to 2008 in Yalova-Turkey
Çakir, Günay; Özdemir, Mehmet
The forest conservation organizations in Turkey have recommended changing the classical forest management systems to protect forest biodiversity since 2006. This study discusses the spatio-temporal analysis of forest management activities and land use changes in Yalova Forest Ecosystems, Turkey. We focused on the Yalova City because (a) it is located in a highly urbanized area, northwestern Turkey, (b) forest is a governmental ownership and producing of many non-wood forest product and wildlife species, (c) governmental organizations are encouraged to be decreased clear-cuts to protect forest ecosystems; (d) GIS databases are available in Yalova; (e) Yalova Forestry Administration has a membership of the Mediterranean Model Forest Network in 2011, and (f) many new forest policies will be developed in Turkey after the membership of the model forest. This study used forest management plans of Yalova Forest during 1971–2008 periods and analyzed data in geographic information system (GIS). Results showed that the rate of forest area in the Yalova steadily increased from 53.4 % in 1971 to 61.2 % to 62.5 % between 1994 and 2008 respectively.

- MakaleYalnız künye2015The effects of the CSR isomorphism on both CSP and CFP
Ilhan-Nas, Tülay; Koparan, Emrah; Okan, Tarhan
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to contribute to the understanding of the interrelationships between corporate social responsibility (CSR) isomorphism of headquarters (HQs) and their subsidiaries as well as corporate social performance (CSP) and corporate financial performance (CFP) at the subsidiary level. Design/methodology/approach – This study tested these relationships through canonical correlation analyses. The data used were drawn from corporate HQ and 63 subsidiaries, which were publicly listed on the Istanbul Stock Exchange in 2007. Both qualitative and quantitative techniques were used in the study. Findings – The results generally indicated that the isomorphism between the CSR practices of the HQ and those of their subsidiaries could impact both the CSP, especially the product and employee dimensions, and the CFP. No relationship was found to exist between the CSP and CFP. Originality/value – Despite extensive interest by scholars and practitioners in the subject area, relatively little is known about the management of CSR by the multinational enterprises (MNEs) (Meyer, 2004), as the literature does not systematically examine the effects that occur on employee performance following the diffusion of CSR among the MNEs subsidiaries. Extending earlier literature on CSR, by integrating the effect of the CFP, the present study focuses on the effects of isomorphism between the CSR practices of the MNEs and those of their subsidiaries on both CSP and CFP. Further, the study examined the interrelation of CSP and CFP from the perspective of international management. Given the increased interest in corporate governance matters at the international level, CSR plays a central and fundamentally important role in the corporate governance of the MNEs because of both globalization forces and the pressures exerted by stakeholders. In this context, this paper is one of the first to explore the transfer of CSR practices from the MNEs to their subsidiaries. The effect of CSR on performance is an important research question, especially for emerging markets (Ibrahim and Angelidis, 1995; Waddock and Graves, 1997; Ghazali, 2007; Johnson and Greening, 1999). Despite the importance of this issue, however, until recently, only a limited discussion has been evident in the literature on CSR in the international arena with particular reference given to the emerging economies. Studying the effects of the CSR isomorphism on the performance in Turkish context is justified in three ways. First, Turkey is the largest emerging economy in Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Middle East (Tatoglu et al., 2003, p. 7). It presents the emerging nature of the market and the transitional characteristics of the institutional environment (Cavusgil et al., 2002). Second, the drivers for CSR in Turkey, such as the other emerging markets whose institutional characteristics and economic fundamentals is similar, are exogenous and institutional rather than endogenous factors (Ararat and Gocenoglu, 2006, p. 11). Excluding the philanthropic activities, the very first manifestations of CSR were observed in the business conduct of MNEs in Turkey (Ararat and Gocenoglu, 2006, p. 11). MNEs have a dominant and leader role in Turkey for CSR practices. Finally, the subsidiaries operating in Turkey are less likely to resist the transfer of the organizational policies and practices such as human resource management policies (Sayim, 2010, 2011) and organizational culture (Ilhan, 2008). In fact, they want to even transfer the policies and practices from MNEs (Sayim 2010, 2011; Ilhan, 2008). Therefore, Turkish context provides a good case to test the effects of the CSR isomorphism on the performance.
- MakaleYalnız künye2015An evaluation of calls made to ministry of health communication center
Bostan, Sedat; Salih Güran, M.
The Objective of the Study: The objective of this study was to analyze and evaluate the complaint calls made between the years of 2004 and 2009 to the Communication Center of The Ministry of Health that was founded within the framework of "The Transformation in Healthcare Project" and thus to make a contribution by providing an introducing general view of the functionality of the feedback mechanism. The Method: The sample of the study consists of 686.397 appeal calls that were made to the Ministry of Health's Communication Center between the years 2004 and 2009. The complaints have been studied in relation to a range of factors like the months of the complaints, the hour of the day, the days of the week, the age groups of the complainers, gender, and type of the complaint and the reason of complaint. Findings: By answering not only to health related appeals, but also to virtually any issue of interest for the citizens, SABIM achieved a plural involvement of the stakeholders and an "interactive administration". It realized feedback mechanisms that enabled the real-time assessment of services as they were being supplied, thus eliminating many problems that arise from lack of communication.

Background: The emergence of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae poses a serious problem to antibiotic management. We investigated the beta-lactamases in a group of carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae clinical isolates from Turkey. Methods: Thirty-seven strains of K. pneumoniae isolated from various clinical specimens were analyzed by antimicrobial susceptibility testing, PCR for the detection of p-lactamase genes, DNA sequencing, and repetitive extragenic palindronic (REP)- FOR analysis. Results: All 37 isolates were resistant to ampicillin, ampicillin/sulbactam, piperacillin, piperacillin/tazobactam, ceftazidime, cefoperazone/sulbactam, cefepime, imipenem, and meropenem. The lowest resistance rates were observed for colistin (2.7%), tigecycline (11%), and amikacin (19%). According to FOR and sequencing results, 98% (36/37) of strains carried at least one carbapenemase gene, with 32 (86%) carrying OXA-48 and 7 (19%) carrying NDM-1. No other carbapenemase genes were identified. All strains carried a CTX-M-2-like beta-lactamase, and some carried SHV- (97%), TEM- (9%), and CTX-M-1-like (62%) beta-lactamases. Sequence analysis of bla(TEM) genes identified a bla(TEM-166) with an amino acid change at position 53 (Arg53Gly) from bla(TEM-1b), the first report of a mutation in this region. REP-FOR analysis revealed that there were seven different clonal groups, and temporo-spatial links were identified within these groups. Conclusions: Combinations of beta-lactamases were found in all strains, with the most common being OXA-48, SHV, TEM, and CTX-M-type (76% of strains). We have reported, for the first time, a high prevalence of the NDM-1 (19%) carbapenemase in carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae from Turkey. These enzymes often co-exist with other beta-lactamases, such as TEM, SHV, and CTX-M beta-lactamases.

Antioxidant activity of the juice and seed and skin extracts prepared with methanol, acetonitrile, and water of Viburnum opulus L. grown in Eastern Black Sea Region were studied with an on-line HPLC-ABTS method and off-line antioxidant methods, among which a linear positive correlation was observed. The fruit extracts were analysed with the HPLC-UV method optimised with 14 standard phenolics. Identification of the phenolic components in the juice was made using an HPLC-UV-ESI-MS method. Nineteen phenolic compounds in juice were identified by comparing the retention times and mass spectra with those of the standards and the phenolics reported in the literature. The major peaks in the juice belonged to coumaroyl-quinic acid, chlorogenic acid, procyanidin B2, and procyanidin trimer. Quite different antioxidant composition profiles were obtained from the extracts with the solvents of different polarities. The antioxidant activities of the seed extracts were higher than those of the skin extracts in general. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Background: This study aims to evaluate the potential of ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) to predict the myocardial infarction in on pump coronary artery bypass grafting (ONCABG) patients. Methods: Fifty elective isolated ONCABG patients (41 males, 9 females; mean age 66 years; range 56 to 75 years) were included in the study. Patients were divided into perioperative myocardial infarction (PMI; n=8) and non-infarction (NPMI; n=42) groups according to perioperative cardiac troponin I (cTnI) values and ECG findings. Serum IMA levels were measured preoperatively, 20 minutes after aortic cross clamping, 30 minutes, at 3, 6, 12 and 24 hours after declamping. Results: Compared to the NPMI group, the declamping 30 minutes, 3, 6 and 12 hours IMA levels were higher in the PMI group (p=0.002, p=0.048, p=0.023, p=0.007, respectively). In both NPMI and PMI groups, the 20 minutes after aortic cross clamping IMA levels were higher compared to the preoperative IMA levels (p=0.0001, p=0.038, respectively). Conclusion: Our study results show that IMA may be an early marker of myocardial infarction in the ONCABG patients.
