Cultural Representation Practices and Meaning Production: Expression of Religious and National Values with Symbols

    Kiziloglu, Sadiye Kotanli

The symbols that people use to express themselves are used as an indicator of national consciousness, holiness, faith and religion. The value and importance they attach to these forms of expression are embodied especially with some symbols, and they become an important means of expressing oneself. Each user has symbols that they use for different purposes. The use of accessories with symbols containing Islamic meaning or figures reflecting national values has become common, especially in recent times. It is observed that different figures are used by different users around us, and it is assumed that these uses have a value not only in terms of aesthetics but also in terms of communication. Based on this assumption, the study investigates how users use icons as a means of communication, the data obtained is evaluated in line with their own opinions, and the purposes of their use are tried to be revealed. In this context, the subject of the study is the use of religious and national symbols in the context of communication in daily life. In this study, the purpose or intention of the symbols used in a way that can express a meaning at the social level is analyzed through objects used in daily life in line with user opinions, and the importance of symbols in the context of communication is evaluated. In this context, the aim of the study is to determine for what purposes and in what way the symbols thought to represent religious and national values are used as a form of visual communication. In the study, it is questioned within which meaning patterns a person establishes his values, beliefs, thoughts or point of view, not verbally but non-verbally, with the use of symbols. In this context, it is aimed to reveal the users' purpose, intention or desire of using symbols in the context of communication. Qualitative research technique was used and three questions were asked to the users using the semi-structured interview technique. Users were determined by criterion sampling, one of the purposeful sampling types, and a total of 26 people, 10 of whom were women, were interviewed. The data obtained as a result of the interview was subjected to qualitative content analysis, and codes, categories and themes were identified while interpreting the data. Themes regarding the answers given for each category were interpreted in the context of communication. According to the results obtained from the study, symbols containing religious and national values are used by both male and female users along with accessories such as rings, necklaces, bracelets and watches. While the letter Allah and the letters Elif Vav are frequently used in the use of religious symbols, the symbols of the star and crescent, IYI, crescent, tugra, double-headed eagle, gray wolf are used to express national feelings. As a result, symbolic objects are designed to reflect national feelings and thoughts; as a means of spiritual satisfaction that provides peace and happiness; reflecting the ideological point of view and being a transmitter of social identity; have religious meaning and value as an indicator of faith it has been determined that it has purposes of use such as protection from evil eyes and being a means of psychological relaxation.

Reflections on the Criticisms of Ibrahim al-Nakha'i (d.96/714)

    Futsi, Ali

Although Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʻī, one of the greatest representatives of the school of jurisprudence in Kufa in the second half of the first century A.H., was considered reliable and reputable both in his own time and among the scholars of later periods, he was subjected to the criticisms of some Ahl al-Hadith scholars. It noteworthy that a significant portion of these criticisms is directed towards al-Nakhaʻī's orientation as a hadith scholar rather than his identity as a jurist. For example, when the allegations against al-Nahāʾī that he rejected hadiths and that he had little semāʾ are examined, it can be said that he actually sought some criteria such as the conformity of the narrations to the practice of Kūfah in addation to some of the conditions he sought in the narrators. Therefore, these allegations are not supported by any data; on the contrary, they show that al-Nakhaʻī's method of receiving hadith was based on solid foundations. In addition, this situation shows that the school of Kūfah took a different approach to the evaluation of hadiths than the Ahl al-Hadith, who took a literal view of the issue. The reasons for al-Nakhaʻī's narration of ḥadīth in the sense the meaing are his jurisprudential orientation and his opposition to the writing of ḥadīth. This shows that he narrated hadith based on a jurisprudential methodology and that he was the pioneer of the school later known as the Hanafites in the first century of the Hijr, who approached hadith in a different way than the Ahl al-Hadith. The fact that al-Nakhaʻī focused on the jurisprudential parts of the ḥadith and did not use writing in narrating the ḥadith is among the main reasons for his tendency towards narration by meaning, while the absence of any criticism against al-Nakhaʻī except for the narration of Ibn Sīrīn (d. 110/729) shows that Ibn 'Awn's (d. 151/768) criticism did not go beyond a personal opinion. There is no explicit criticism of al-Nakhaʻī's mursal narrations other than the evaluation of their authenticity and weakness, and no critical commentary has been identified except Ibn Hajar's (d. 852/1449) statement that "he was a sika, but he used to mursal a lot". In the evaluations of the Ahl al-Hadith who criticized Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʻī's mursal narrations, the influence of their approach to mursal narrations can be observed. Although it has been said that al-Nakhaʻī made mistakes in the Arabic language, it is not correct to say that someone whose name is included in the most authentic isnads and whose narrations with meaning are accepted by hadith scholars does not have a good command of Arabic. Moreover, al-Nakhaʻī is also Arab in terms of ancestry. His statement about Abū Hurayra (d. 58/678), "He is not a jurist," is prominent in a report quoted by al- Dhahabi (d. 748/1348). However, in other sources, these criticisms are presented in general terms and seen as a general tendency of the school of Kūfah. al-Nakhaʻī's statements generally reflect the views of the school of Kūfah and the focus of criticism is on the people of Kūfah rather than al-Nakhaʻī himself. The criticisms of Abū Hurayra's narrations were not limited to Hanafīs, but were also made by Ahl al-Hadith scholars on similar grounds. Therefore, if a criticism is to be made, it should be addressed within a general framework, not by reducing it to al-Nakhaʻī’s person. Although there are a few examples of al-Nakhaʻī's association with Shiʿism, it is not compatible with the Shiʿite sect in general. Dhahabi 's definitions show that al-Nakhaʻī should rather be evaluated within the framework of Ahl al-Sunnah. Ibn Qutayba's (d. 276/889) categorization of al-Nakhaʻī as a Shīʿī does not coincide with the Shīʿī understanding of later periods and leads to a wrong conclusion. There is not enough evidence for al-Nakhaʻī to be considered a Shīʿī, so it is not correct to attribute him to this sect. al-Nakhaʻī used ra'y in matters of jurisprudence, but he rejected this method in matters of faith and even argued that ra'y was bid'ah. While he generally used the word 'ra'y' for the bid'ah sects in matters of belief, he used ra’y in practical matters and produced solutions by making qiyās in matters about which there was no clear ruling. However, he adhered to the narrations in matters where there was a hadith. al-Nakhaʻī's devotion to narrations and his tendency to make qiyās in matters where there was no hadith played a major role in shaping the school of fiqh in Kūfah. In conclusion, it can be said that al-Nakhaʻī used ra'y and qiyās in fiqh, but he rejected these methods in matters of faith and adhered to the narrations.

Relationship between Organic Agriculture And GDP Per Capita, Economic Growth, and Unemployment: Panel Data Analysis

    Merdan, Kurtulus

The increase in the world population recently has also increased the need for agricultural products. The need for food products has made it necessary to obtain more products per unit area. At this point, producers have focussed on the use of hormones, chemicals, and fertilisers to increase productivity and meet the demand for cheap food, and the process that increases production in the short term has become a threat to human health in the long term. Over time, the negative effects of chemicals on humans and the environment were observed, forcing producers to seek new methods. This process has led to independent studies on organic agriculture in every country. In this study, the effects of organic agriculture on some economic variables were revealed. In this context, the analyses focus now the variables of area allocated to organic agriculture on a regional basis, production amount and number of producers affected GDP per capita, economic growth, and unemployment in Turkey between 2003 and 2021. The scientific dimension of the study was prepared using data obtained from domestic and foreign literature and the electronic database of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock. In this study, in which panel data analysis was used, EViews 12 programme was employed. For the variables used in the study, the geographical region cross-section dependence was determined, and the stationarity of the series was examined with the CIPS (Cross-Sectionally Augmented IPS) unit root test. As a result of the study, it was determined that organic production amount, number of organic farmers, and organic production area did not have a significant effect on economic growth and unemployment. Organic production area and the number of organic farmers had a positive and significant effect on GDP per capita, but the amount of organic production did not have a significant relationship

Investigation of the relationship between the buildings collapsed in February 6, 2023 Kahramanmaras earthquakes and the soil and analysis of the risk of collapse in earthquakes

Eraslan, Selim; Hatipoglu, Ilter Kutlu; Ocak, Fatih; Isik, Fatih; Zeybek, Halil Ibrahim

In this study, the building-ground relationship in the areas affected by the February 6 Kahramanmaras earthquakes was determined, and the risk of building collapse in future earthquakes was analyzed. Remote sensing techniques determined the collapsed building-soil relationship, and the frequency ratio method was applied by utilizing Geographic Information Systems techniques to assess the risk of collapse in earthquakes. According to the research results, 84% of the collapses occurred in flat areas. On the other hand, 49.7% of the collapses occurred in the 0-500 m elevation range. In particular, it was determined that 46% (110.8 km(2)) of the collapsed buildings occurred on alluvial land belonging to the Quaternary period. According to the earthquake frequency analysis of the total 108,812 km(2) area considered in this study, 43.72% of the area is at the Risky level, indicating that a large part of the region is at significant earthquake risk. Moreover, Hatay, Adana, Osmaniye, Sanliurfa, Kahramanmaras, and Malatya are the provinces where the risk of collapse of buildings in an earthquake is high. These results reveal the necessity of analyzing by considering many criteria in determining residential areas in provinces at risk of earthquakes.

THE CAUSALITY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CREDIT DEFAULT SWAPS (CDS) AND PORTFOLIO INVESTMENTS: THE CASE OF TÜRKİYE

    Küçükosman, Asiye; Uzun, Sumeyye

This study examines the causality relationship between portfolio investments and credit default swaps (CDS) in T & uuml;rkiye. Analysing the dynamics between portfolio investments and CDS premiums, two important variables for financial markets is critical to understanding how risk perception and investment decisions are affected. While portfolio investments are generally considered an indicator of the confidence of foreign investors in the country's economy, CDS premiums are an important risk measure that reflects the country's debt risk and the risk perception of market participants. In this context, examining the relationships between the two variables contributes to the understanding of the effects of investor behavior and risk perception on macroeconomic indicators in financial markets. In the study, the Granger causality test was applied using data from the period 2014Q1-2024Q1. The results obtained show that CDS premiums have a significant and unidirectional causal effect on portfolio investments. Increases in CDS premiums increase investors' risk perception and lead to a decrease in portfolio investments. On the other hand, no causal effect of portfolio investments on CDS premiums was found. These findings emphasize the importance of risk management in terms of portfolio investments in T & uuml;rkiye and reveal that CDS premiums play a role in investor decisions.

Individual Earthquake Preparedness of Residents in Istanbul: Social and Cognitive Determinants

Topal, Mehmet Hanefi; Simsek, Kubra; Baspinar, Adem

This study aims to identify the social and cognitive factors that influence individual-level earthquake preparedness among Istanbul residents by using an extended model that incorporates earthquake risk perception within the framework of social cognitive theory (SCT). A survey of 411 participants was conducted, and data analysis was performed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The findings strongly support the SCT assertions, revealing that social factors (such as social trust and subjective norms) and cognitive factors (including outcome expectations and self-efficacy) are key predictors of earthquake risk perception. However, earthquake preparedness behavior was found to be more closely associated with cognitive factors, particularly self-efficacy and risk perception, with subjective norms being the only social factor influencing preparedness behavior. These results that policymakers and practitioners should focus on disaster education, awareness, and participation to promote individual preparedness and mitigate disaster risk.

Optimization of expropriation costs on the highway projects in Türkiye

    Çelik, Kemal

Expropriation is widely used to introduce highway projects into the society. Expropriation is the registration process of real estate and equities owned by natural and legal persons on behalf of the administration for public interest, provided that property and easement right amount shall be paid in cash or in advance or by equal installments. In what situations and by which institutions expropriation is carried out are restricted by the law. In accordance with the Article 3 of the Expropriation Law Number 2942 amended by the Law Number 4650, the expropriation process shall not be started without an adequate allowance provided by the administration. The exercise of the right of property shall not be against public interest.” Project areas are required to be converted into public property after the development plans for the public projects are prepared. Areas regarded as private property but intersected by highway, railway or waterway routes can only be occupied after expropriation. Without expropriation, projects based on transportation in improvement areas can be opened to public with the application of the provisions of the Development Law Number 3194, while those in areas having no development plan can be opened to public with the application of the relevant provisions of the Agricultural Reform Law Number 3083 on Land Consolidation in Irrigated Areas and Law Number 5403 on Soil Conservation and Land Use. In this article, opening highways, railways, and waterways to public in Türkiye using the implementation of development plans is discussed. For the real estate coinciding with the route of public investments, if land and land lots are arranged in accordance with the Article 18 of the Development Law Number 3194, state withholding up to 45% may be imposed. The objective function in the state withholding can be stated as f= costmin= f(a,b). Land acquisition increases as the ratio of state withholding increases, resulting in the minimization of the expropriation costs. Public projects such as highway can be opened to public free of charge with development plan implementation in improvement areas and with land consolidation in rural areas having no development plan.

Determination of physicochemical and antioxidant properties of icecream produced with the addition of Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.); [Yer elması (Helianthus tuberosus L.) ilavesiyle üretilen dondurmanın fizikokimyasal ve antioksidan özelliklerinin belirlenmesi]

    Gündoğdu, Engin

The study investigates the effects of incorporating Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) into ice cream formulations on their physicochemical and antioxidant properties of icecream. Jerusalem artichoke (JA), known for its high inulin content and beneficial carbohydrates, was added to ice cream in varying concentrations (5%, 10%, and 15%) and evaluated for its impact on dry matter, protein, ash, pH, acidity, sugar content, viscosity, volume increase, initial dripping time, total melting time, color values, total phenolic content, DPPH free radical scavenging activity, and total antioxidant capacity. The results revealed that the addition of JA significantly improved the dry matter and antioxidant properties of the ice cream, with the highest values observed in samples containing 10% and 15% JA. Total phenolic content increased from 363.51 mg GAE/kg in the control to 587.47 mg GAE/kg with 15% JA, while DPPH scavenging activity rose from 12.49% to 18.04%. On the other hand, the control sample has the highest total antioxidant capacity (4517.29 mg AAE/kg), while the JA samples generally exhibit lower values. The protein content decreased slightly with the addition of JA, while ash content increased. The pH and titratable acidity values also showed significant changes, with higher concentrations of JA resulting in higher pH and acidity. Overall, the incorporation of JA into ice cream formulations enhances the nutritional and functional properties. These findings suggest that JA is a valuable ingredient for developing functional ice cream with potential health benefits.

Mineral chemistry, petrography and crystallization conditions of the Middle Eocene Kazıkbeli Pluton (Eastern Pontides, NE Türkiye)

Güloğlu, Zikrullah Samet; Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Aydinçakir, Emre; YÜCELc, Cem

The Eastern Pontides host a diverse suite of plutonic rocks spanning a wide range of ages and compositions. Among these, the Middle Eocene Kazıkbeli pluton, located in the Kürtün district of Gümüşhane, stands out due to its distinctive petrological characteristics. This study aims to unravel the petrological implications of petrographic and mineral chemical data to determine the physicochemical conditions (temperature, pressure, oxygen fugacity) under which the Kazıkbeli magma crystallized and was emplaced. By integrating mineral chemical data, we seek to quantify emplacement pressure, crystallization temperature, and oxygen fugacity. A comprehensive understanding of the genetic relationships and physicochemical properties of the Kazıkbeli pluton rocks, as determined through geological, petrographic and mineral chemistry, is crucial for elucidating the geological evolution of the Eastern Pontides. The Kazıkbeli Pluton exhibits a predominant NE-SW orientation and encompasses an area of roughly 46 km2. Modal mineralogical analysis reveals a compositional spectrum ranging from gabbroic diorite to monzogranite, with granodiorite and tonalite being the most prominent rock types. Textural variations encompass fine-to medium-grained, porphyritic, poikilitic, and occasionally graphic textures. The primary mineral assemblage of the pluton comprises plagioclase, orthoclase, quartz, amphibole, biotite, and Fe-Ti oxides. Accessory minerals include zircon, apatite, sphene, and allanite. Plagioclases are labradorite to oligoclase (An26 to An66) in composition. K-feldspar minerals exhibited an orthoclase composition (Or80 to Or97). All amphiboles belong to the calcic amphibole field and exhibit a magnesio-hornblende (Mg#=0.63-0.73) composition. Biotites crystallized as solidified melt products with compositions between annite and phlogopite endmembers, plotting close to the magnesium-rich (Mg#=0.52-0.58) end of the phlogopite solid solution series. Calculated crystallization temperatures derived from amphibole and biotite data range from 712°C to 824°C. Pressure estimations calculated using amphibole-plagioclase, amphibole and biotite suggest a range of 0.04 to 2.06 kbar. Oxygen fugacity (ƒO2) values calculated using amphibole and biotite fall between -12.5 and -16.1. Amphibole-based water content estimations indicate a range of 3.7% to 5.7% for the pluton. Biotite compositions within the studied Kazıkbeli pluton rocks exhibit characteristics suggestive of a potential mantle origin. Geobarometric calculations based on mineral chemistry data with geological and petrographic features indicate the emplacement of the Kazıkbeli Pluton at relatively shallow depths within the crust (~1 to 8 km).

Determination of Antioxidant Capacities of Extracts of Sorbus subfusca (ledeb. ex. nordm.) boiss

    Kocabaş, Selahattin; Topal, Fevzi

Sorbus subfusca (ledeb. ex. nordm.) boiss. (Sorbus subfusca) belongs to the Rosacese family. It is commonly referred to as highland rowan. It is an endemic species found only in the eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey and in a few countries on the Asian Continent. Both water (WESS) and ethyl alcohol (EESS) lyophilized forms were used as extracts. Different reducing capacity methods and radical scavenging activity methods were used to study the antioxidant activities of the extracts. Total phenolic compounds were calculated as 43.5 (WESS) and 43.0 (EESS) µg GAE/mg extract. This value is an indication that it can take place in plants with high phenolic content. Peroxidation inhibition percentages of linoleic acid emulsion at 20 µg mL-1 concentration for WESS and EESS; WESS was calculated as 70.93% and EESS as 82.63%. The high antioxidant capacity of Sorbus subfusca, an endemic species, brings up the preference of natural products as antioxidants. It is thought that these studies will draw a new path to the literature, especially alternative medicine and pharmacological studies.

Significance of Model Forest Stakeholders in the Management of Sustainable Forest Resources: The Case of Yalova Model Forest, Turkey

Bekiroğlu, Sultan; Özdemir, Mehmet; Özyürek, Ercan; Çakır, Günay

Success of model forests, which are organized to support sustainable management of forests in collaboration with environmental, social, and economic forces on forest-based large territories, depends on the development of civil society index dimensions defined as “stakeholder participation,” “organizational structure,” “environment,” “values,” and “impact.” In this study, which was carried out within the scope of Yalova Model Forest, situation analysis strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats analysis was used as a method. Literature and official documents, expert opinions on “stakeholder engagement,” and data obtained through a 30-question survey were used as material. In this study, “historical development,”“legal regulations,” “activities” of Yalova Model Forest and weaknesses, strengths, opportunities, threats of civil society index and strategies pertaining to them were determined. Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats analysis was conducted by forming four separate focus groups for four dimensions of the Yalova Model Forest civil society index. According to the results of this study, the stakeholder participation dimension was concluded to be exceedingly inadequate. This is evidenced by advocate stakeholders’ insufficient participation rates in activities, absence of adverse stakeholders in this reconciliation platform, and the fact that 99% of dormant–indifferent stakeholders are unaware of this organization’s existence. Therefore, stakeholder participation dimension should be strengthened and the strategic plans that will be implemented should be prepared with the participation of stakeholders. Otherwise, Yalova Model Forest’s existence, as a civil society organization, will be jeopardized. However, active advocate stakeholders’ enthusiasm about resolving problems is reassuring for the future of Yalova Model Forest.

The Effect of Smartphone Addiction on Sleep Quality and Lifestyle Behaviors of Adolescents

    Göger, Berrin; Kahriman, Ilknur

Many studies highlight the negative impact of smartphone addiction on adolescents’ health. It disrupts sleep habits and lifestyle. The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of smartphone addiction on the sleep quality and lifestyle behavior of adolescents. It was conducted in public high schools in a city center in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Türkiye. The sample consisted of 546 high school students. Data were collected using a Descriptive Information Form for Adolescents, the Smartphone Addiction Scale—Short Version, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Adolescent Lifestyle Profile Scale. According to the results, the incidence of smartphone addiction among adolescents differed according to gender, academic achievement, age of first smartphone (p =.044), and daily smartphone use time (p =.000). Mean Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores were not significantly different for the same variables. There was a significant difference in mean Adolescent Lifestyle Profile Scale scores according to academic achievement, having a smartphone, and age of first smartphone acquisition. There was a weak positive correlation between smartphone addiction and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores and a weak negative correlation between smartphone addiction and Adolescent Lifestyle Scale scores. There was also a weak negative correlation between Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores and Adolescent Lifestyle Scale scores. Smartphone addiction negatively affects adolescents’ sleep quality and lifestyle.

Effect of thickness and melting temperature of phase change material integrated into exterior wall on building energy performance and CO2 emission reduction; [Dış duvara entegre edilen faz değiştiren malzemenin kalınlığı ve erime sıcaklığının bina enerji performansı ve CO2 emisyon azalımına etkisi]

    İlgar, Gamze; Terhan, Meryem

In the study, the effect of phase change materials integrated into the building's external wall has been investigated in terms of material type, thickness, and melting temperature of phase change material on the building energy performance for İzmir Province. A villa residential project has been modelled in 3D using DesignBuilder energy simulation software and two different external wall configurations have been designed by changing the position, thickness and melting temperature of the PCMs into the wall. The amount of CO2 emission reductions that PCMs will provide according to the fuel type of the building's heating system has been calculated. Using PCMs in the external wall not only provides high heating and cooling energy savings but also increases thermal comfort indoors by reducing temperature fluctuations. The PCM melting temperature of 23℃ performs quite well compared to other temperatures in both cooling energy and heating energy demand reduction. By increasing the triple thickness of the PCM, 18.81% in heating energy and 22.85% in cooling energy savings can be achieved. Depending on the external wall and phase change material types, different thicknesses and melting temperatures of PCM, annual total energy saving of the phase-change material is calculated between 10,349.50-83,345.98 kJ/m2.year and the annual CO2 emission reduction according to fuel types has been found as 0.672-14.284 kgCO2/m2.year.

Spatial Analysis of Economic Risk, Economic Freedom Index, Corruption Perceptions Index and Human Development Index; [Ekonomik Risk, Ekonomik Özgürlük İndeksi, Yolsuzluk Algısı İndeksi ve İnsani Gelişim İndeksi’nin Mekânsal Analizi]

    Kalkan, Yusuf

This study aims to examine the spatial (neighbourhood) relations of 163 countries in terms of economic risk (ER), economic freedom index (EFI), corruption perception index (CPI) and human development index (HDI). Moran I, Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) and Multiscale Geographically Weighted Regression (MGWR) methods were used for spatial analysis. The MGWR models demonstrated that countries globally have strong spatial relationships with their neighbouring countries regarding ER, EFI, and CPI but are not significant regarding HDI. This result can be explained by the fact that ER, EFI and CPI indicators are mostly related to the country's economy and that countries have become economically interdependent today. However, HDI may not have resulted in significant spatial relationships due to its focus on human quality of life and social-cultural differences among countries.
