Mimetic Desire and Scapegoating Mechanisms in Martin Amis’s “The Last Days of Muhammad Atta”

    Güneş, Mustafa

René Girard, the French sacrifice theory doyen, bases her sacrifice and scapegoat arguments on cultural and literary representations and claims an end for the sacrificial rites and scapegoating mechanism in cultures and narratives after the exposition and deciphering of the stereotypes of persecution with Christianity. However, by referring to René Girard’s sacrifice theory, this study aims to argue that one of the greatest yet also most notorious writers of English fiction, Martin Amis, who recurrently touches upon such issues in his texts as racism, sexism, wars, capitalism, and terrorism, implies a modern enactment of the mechanism of mimetic desire and scapegoating in a literary work, that is “The Last Days of Muhammad Atta,” which revolves around the last days of one of the terrorists of 9/11. Amis’s short fiction will be subjected to a close reading so as to argue that despite Amis’s interviews and arguments associating terrorism with Islam and the Orient, the text deconstructs Amis’s allegations against Islamism and the Oriental, and when Amis’s text is considered as a modern and multi-layered representation of mechanisms of mimetic desire and scapegoating, the violence and terrorism are revealed to be issues which cannot solely be identified with a single milieu or a group nonchalantly. Instead, it will be clearly seen that the core drive for humans has always been the will to power and to ensure authority over the other throughout the centuries, whether it be primitive tribes, or civilized groups, or modern governments and nations, and such concentrations as a nation, community, or religion further worked to give their civilized members a cause to satisfy the primitive tendency to violence and carnage surviving in their repressed collective unconscious.

TURKEY'S LIBYA APPROACH AND IRINI OPERATION ON THE GREECE ISSUE

    Gürdal, Elif; Ince, Fuat

After the overthrow of the Gaddafi administratio, UN and NATO intervention in Libyan lands took place, and then a political multi-headed structure emerged. Shortly before the overthrow of the Gaddafi administration, energy reserves of which workability was discovered have emerged in the Eastern Mediterranean. This discovery has been an important factor of the political confusion and the effort to carry out the power struggle between states through Libya. Greece tries to be effective in the political authority that is tried to be created in Libya and tries to passivate Turkey in the Aegean and the Mediterranean. In this power struggle, Turkey signed the Delimitation of The Maritime Jurisdiction Areas in The Mediterranean and Military Cooperation Agreements with the National Government of Accord in Libya both to respond to the defense of the Aegean land and sea areas occupied by Greece, to protect the jurisdiction rights in the Eastern Mediterranean and to protect the maritime jurisdictions belonging to the TRNC. These agreements disturbed other states in the region who were struggling for power. Therefore, the EU declared itself authority to control the arms embargo requested by the UN on Libya and launched the IRINI operation. However, the IRINI operation is seen as an attempt to squeeze Turkey in the Mediterranean region. In the light of these information and researches, this study is a qualitative research that handles Turkey's Eastern Mediterranean and Libya approach th

RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN INVESTMENT INCENTIVES, PUBLIC INVESTMENT EXPENDITURES AND EXPORT: PANEL CAUSALITY ANALYSIS ON PROVINCES IN TURKEY

Recepoglu, Mursit; Doganay, Muharrem Akin; Deger, Mustafa Kemal

The state plays an essential role in the survival of companies under today's global competition conditions. Governments can, directly and indirectly, affect the competitiveness of firms through incentives and public investment expenditures. This study examines the relations between investment incentives, public investment expenditures and exports at the provincial level in Turkey. According to the panel causality analysis findings covering the period 2002-2017, there is a two-way causal relationship between investment incentives and exports. On the other hand, there is a one-way causality from exports to public investment expenditures. These results indicate the importance of the effects of incentives on exports in the short term. However, the absence of the expected export effects of public investments can be attributed to inefficiency in public investments.

Women Entrepreneurs' Education Level, Political Skill, and Firm Performance: Political Influence and Human Capital Theories

Demirbaǧ, Orkun; Demirbaǧ, Kübra Simşek; Batl, Gülgönül Bozoǧlu

Purpose: Because of the growing interest in the literature in education and political skill as facilitators of firm performance, this article aims to reveal whether there is a moderating role of women entrepreneurs' political skill on the relationship between their education level and firm performance when firm- and entrepreneur-level characteristics remain under control. Methodology: The study was conducted in Istanbul, Kocaeli, and Bursa, cities with the lowest gender gap in Turkey. The participants of the questionnaires were 291 entrepreneurs who are members of the Women Entrepreneurs Association of Turkey (KAGIDER), the Women Entrepreneur Members of Endeavor Turkey, and the TOBB Women Entrepreneurs. Hierarchical regression analysis was performed to analyze the dataset. Findings: When firm- and the entrepreneur-level characteristics remain under control, women entrepreneurs' political skill shows a moderator role in the relationship between women entrepreneurs' education level and firm performance. Practical Implications: A bachelor's degree or higher, along with political skill, allow women entrepreneurs to increase their firm performance. Furthermore, the higher the political skill, the higher the effect of education level on firm performance. Originality/Value: This is the first study to investigate the moderating role of political skill of women entrepreneurs in the relationship between education level and firm performance. Moreover, political influence and human capital theories are jointly applied to the theoretical model.

The effect of tourism and legalization policies on summer pasture in Turkey

    Döner, Fatih

In Turkey, according to Pasture Law, land allocated for farmers to spend the summer with their animals, graze their animals and benefit from grass is defined as “summer pasture (yaylak in Turkish).” Summer pasture is of national importance for its biodiversity, landscape, cultural heritage and transhumance. However, especially after 1990s, the summer pasture areas have been extensively used in tourism activities in Turkey. By changing land use, the increasing tourism activities combined with legal uncertainties and the legalization policies have caused summer pasture areas transferred into built-up areas. The effect of the tourism and legalization policies on the land use changes in summer pasture areas was evaluated in this study. It was determined that Turkey's tourism and legalization policies have adverse effect on sustainable use of summer pasture areas. These policies aimed at economic development and solving property problems of rural areas caused new legal problems and expansion of built-up areas. A better land use policy and an effective control mechanism are necessary for the sustainable use of summer pasture areas.

Suspicious activity recognition for monitoring cheating in exams

    Genemo, Musa Dima

Video processing is getting special attention from research and industries. The existence of smart surveillance cameras with high processing power has opened the for making it conceivable to design intelligent visual surveillance systems. Know a day it is very possible to assure invigilators safety during the examination period. This work aims to distinguish the suspicious activities of students during the exam for surveillance examination halls. For this, a 63 layers deep CNN model is suggested and named "L4-BranchedActionNet". The suggested CNN structure is centered on the alteration of VGG-16 with added four blanched. The developed framework is initially turned into a pre-trained framework by using the SoftMax function to train it on the CUI-EXAM dataset. The dataset for detecting suspicious activity is subsequently sent to this pre-trained algorithm for feature extraction. Feature subset optimization is applied to the deep features that have been obtained. These extracted features are first entropy coded, and then an ant colony system (ACS) is used to optimize the entropy-based coded features. The configured features are then input into a variety of classification models based on SVM and KNN. With a performance of 0.9299 in terms of accuracy, the cubic SVM gets the greatest efficiency scores. The suggested model was further tested on the CIFAR-100 dataset, and it was shown to be accurate to the tune of 0.89796. The result indicates the suggested frameworks soundness.

Pursuing Legal Harmony: Indonesianization of Islamic Law Concept and Its Impact on National Law

    Karimullah, Suud Sarim

This study responds to a polemic on Indonesia’s formalization of Islamic law, which is inseparable from the dynamics of political authority and the internal views of Muslims. It seeks to describe, explore, construct, and analyze the Indonesianization of Islamic law, as proposed by Kamsi, an Islamic law professor at Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University of Yogyakarta, as one of the efforts to make Islamic law become the national law. The Indonesianization of Islamic law, namely by legislating or codifying Islamic law through the state system so that it is enforceable in Indonesia. This study is conceptual research using a legal philosophy approach to comprehend an Islamic legal thought from a sharia scholar using the content analysis method. The results of this study show that the concept of Indonesianisation of Islamic Law uses a modern knowledge system as the paradigm. This effort seeks to nationally legalize Islamic law through Indonesian legal instruments that can give birth to inclusiveness and tolerance coupled with pluralism with differentiation in unification. Its theoretical implication emphasizes a need for epistemological and axiological adjustments to realize the concept of Indonesianization of Islamic law. The idea should also apply nationally within the framework of Pancasila (the Indonesian state’s ideology) as a democratic country.

Interview with the Child Suspected of Sexual Abuse: How Should Teachers and School Counsellors Behave and What Should They Do?

    Türkkan, Tuğba; Odaci, Hatice

Child sexual abuse is a traumatic experience with psychological effects in the short and longterm. The reporting, which is considered critical intervention for termination of child's abuseand initiation of interventions in legal process depends on child's explanation of abuse. However, when literature on the subject was examined, it was observed that there was alimited number of the sources that would form the basis for the interviews with the childwho was victim of sexual abuse were not easily accessible. Therefore, this study was carriedout in order to contribute to related literature and professionals who works in this area. It isnecessary to be extremely careful in the interviews with the child who is victim of abuse.Because the expression of children are very important in reporting the case, which is difficultto prove. The responses of the interviewers may be reason why the child gives up his/hernarrative. Children are sensitive and vulnerable than adults. Therefore, to ensure that thechild does not suffer a second trauma, it is important to conduct the interview carefully andto act on the principles of high benefit and protection of the child throughout the interview.

The Place of China in the US National Security Strategy Documents and the Hegemonic Order

    Gürdal, Elif

National Security Strategy documents are the roadmaps that the USA envisages in the environment defined as the new world order after the Cold War. These strategy documents, which were published for the first time in the Reagan period show which political approach will be taken. These reports are based on the importance of the necessary security poli- cies of that period. Here, it is possible to deduce the elements that the USA sees as a threat to itself. This work chronologically discusse China, which the USA saw as a strategic partner in the early 1990s, but defined as a stra- tegic competitor, sometimes even an enemy, and sometimes an unstable risk factor in the last decade through strategy documents. As a method, the National Security Strategy reports published nineteen times since 1987 were examined through the transformation and reasons of the policies envi- saged to be applied to China. These reasons were investigated through the understanding of hegemony. Therefore, the study is a qualitative research that aims to reveal a relational connection, in which documents are used as a source. The main purpose is to find out how China’s post-Cold War rise was reflected in the strategy documents in the context of security and how it caused an American reaction in the Strategy Documents in power competition. Here, it is seen that there is a connection between the power regression of the hegemonic actor and the incentives for participation in the hegemonic order it leads. The new hegemonic leader may emerge from friendly countries, which are encouraged by hegemon actor for hegemonic order, rather than rivals with long-term power competition.
