- MakaleAçık Erişim2017Reflections of the Terrorist Attacks in 2016 on Humor Magazines
Türten, Elif
Cartoon and politics have been in close relationship throughout the history of the press. Political structure of the period, social events that developed due to the political or political events that took place at that time and political actors are reflected on the caricatures and humor magazines. In our country, the year 2016 was very intense in terms of agenda. 27 terrorist attacks took place throughout 2016. During these attacks, hundreds of people lost their lives and thousands were injured. In the study, it was investigated how the terrorist incidents in 2016, which the country experienced in a state of mourning, were handled in the humor magazines, how much space was provided and how the terrorist incidents were evaluated. In this regard, the research question is set as how the political trends and ideological structures of the humor magazines that are the subject of study are reflected in the cartoons. In this context, cover pages of Penguin, Girgir and Uykusuz Magazines were used as a method of critical discourse analysis by Teun van Dijk. These magazines were selected because they constitute important examples of political cartoons and have a large reader base in Turkey. As a result of the examination, 8 cover pages were drawn in Penguen Magazine, 6 in Girgir Magazine and 7 in Uykusuz Magazine. A total of 21 cover pages were examined in the study. The Penguen Magazine approached at people who were exposed to terrorist incidents. Girgir Magazine criticized the events. However, the most serious criticism about the subject was made by Uykusuz Magazine. In general, disappointment from terrorist events has found place in cartoons.

Cakir, Gunay; Guler, Alptug; Zengin, Hayati; Degermenci, Ahmet Salih
Determination of land ownership and boundaries is one of the most important purposes of the urban and rural land laws. There can be some boundary problems while preparing forestry area of any urban area when there is not consistency between the borders constructed by different state organizations like land cadastre, forest cadastre and forest management and planning teams. This study aims to illustrate these conflicts in forestry applications process of two different areas (Agva and Beykoz) having different characteristics. The study was carried out in Agva and Beykoz districts in the province of Istanbul and focused on the integration in the land and forest cadastral systems. The Beykoz and Agva Forest Planning Units have different characteristics in terms of population (urban and rural) and social impacts. Analyses of the data obtained from the field studies which it was utilized for the investigation of the data obtained from various base maps, were carried out using GIS software. Many inhabitants of the villages in the Agva Planning Unit had migrated from the district. Thus, in accordance with Boundary Law number of 6831 part of 2/B some parcels of villages in Agva were determined to be acting forest and were reassigned as forest land. In Beykoz, however, areas of this nature were few and the destruction of the forests was great. The spatial analysis of the study made it possible to remove discrepancies occurring in the cadastral situation by preparing forest management plans. Consequently, if land cadastre and forest cadastre units carry out work in coordination to determine the cadastral situation, a basis for forest management plans can be established and cadastral problems greatly reduced.
- MakaleYalnız künye2016Theory of Justice, OCB, and Individualism: Kyrgyz Citizens
Özbek, Mehmet Ferhat; Yoldash, Mohammad Asif; Tang, Thomas Li-Ping
Research suggests that organizational justice (procedural, distributive, and interactional justice) has important impacts on work-related attitudes and behaviors, such as organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). In this article, we explore the extent to which individualism moderates the relationship between organizational justice and OCB (organizational obedience, participation, and loyalty) among citizens in Kyrgyzstan. We make additional contributions to the literature because we know very little about these constructs in this former Soviet Union country, Kyrgyzstan, an under-researched and under-represented region of the world. Results of our data collected from 402 managers and employees in Kyrgyzstan offer the following new discoveries. All three justice constructs are related to OCB. Individualism moderates only the distributive and interactive justice to OCB relationships. We develop an intricate theory with provocative implications: Procedural justice produces obedience. For “individualists,” interactional justice inspires loyalty and, interestingly, distributive justice “can only buy” participation, but “can’t buy” loyalty. Therefore, for individualists, interactional justice outweighs distributive justice for organizational loyalty. Based on Kyrgyz citizens’ justice, OCB, and individualism, our theory reveals novel insights regarding culture, money attitude, and intrinsic motivation and provides critical and practical implications to the field of business ethics.
- Kitap BölümüAçık Erişim2016The effects of an accounting information system on the institutionalisation level of enterprises
Cam, Handan; Tosunoglu, Busra
An accounting information system (AIS) is a system of collecting, storing, and processing financial and accounting data that is used by decision makers. An accounting information system is generally a computer-based method for tracking accounting activity in conjunction with information technology resources. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of an accounting information system on the institutionalisation level of enterprises. In this regard, a model has been developed and tested. Five hypotheses were constituted to test the model and a questionnaire was conducted to 150 firms that are operating in small and medium sized enterprises in Trabzon. The structural equation model was used to test the hypotheses. According to findings of the analysis it may be seen that an interdepartmental information system, compliance with an accounting information system, and an accounting information system activity have an effect on the institutionalisation level of enterprises.
- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2015Religious Social Movements and Economic Welfare in Modern Turkey
Köroğlu, Cemile Zehra; Köroğlu, Muhammet Ali
In all societies, there have been some movements that point out social, political, economic, ideological, or moral problems or aim at partial or complete change. This chapter discusses the new meanings attributed to the concept of social movements in the postmodern era. A theoretical framework is proposed to understand the nature of social movements since the 1960s and to demonstrate their differences from classical movements. Turkey provides a particularly rich context with high potential for social movements, both with secular and religious aspirations. Religious social movements have shown quite a tense relationship with the state throughout the history of the republic; yet, they have gained power and prosperity through evolving liberal economic policies since the 1980s. Therefore, resource mobilization and new social movement paradigms are used in this chapter to explain Turkey’s religious social movements today.

- MakaleYalnız künye2014Attitudes Toward Ethically Questionable Negotiation Tactics: A Two-Country Study
Banai, Moshe; Stefanidis, Abraham; Shetach, Ana; Özbek, Mehmet Ferhat
Current research has identified five discrete US negotiation tactics, a traditional one considered to be ethical, and four considered to be ethically questionable. Scholars have independently used culture to explain how the endorsement of these five negotiation tactics varies across nations. They have also independently used interpersonal trust and ethics propensity to explain antecedents of the endorsement of those five negotiation tactics. This research combines all those variables into one model that investigates the influence of horizontal and vertical individualism–collectivism, ethical idealism, and trust propensity on employees’ attitudes toward ethically questionable negotiation tactics in Israel and Kyrgyzstan. A survey questionnaire was translated from English to Hebrew and Kyrgyz, and 615 responses were collected from employees in various industries in the two countries. We empirically confirmed three types of questionable negotiation tactics discovered in previous one-nation studies, namely, pretending, deceiving, and lying. Vertical individualism was found to be positively, and horizontal collectivism was found to be negatively, related to pretending, deceiving, and lying. Ethical idealism was found to be negatively related to the endorsement of the lying tactics, while trust propensity was negatively related to the pretending tactics. Compared with Israel, employees’ endorsement of ethically questionable negotiation tactics was significantly higher in Kyrgyzstan. Contribution to theory and practice is discussed.

Although injuries caused by the home-made weapons such as mole guns, which are intended to fight off moles, are rare in Turkey they do still happen. They generally involve minor accidents and cause simple injuries to the hand. In this case we present a patient who involves a trauma to the left hand with fragmental fracture of the first metacarpal caused while checking whether a mole gun had fired or not. This injury is an example of an accident related to primitive, home- made weapons, used particularly in rural areas.
- MakaleYalnız künye2011Operating regimes of the government: Accounting and accountability changes in the sultan süleyman waqf of the ottoman empire (the 1826 experience)
Yayla, Hilmi Erdoǧan
Following Foucauldian accounting research, this article analyzes the relationship between accounting changes and "governmentality" practices by examining the accounting and accountability changes in the Sultan Süleyman Waqf of the Ottoman Empire in accordance with the restructuring regulations of Evkaf-i{dotless} Humayun Nezareti, established in 1826 for the purpose of the centralization of waqfs. It is argued that accounting was a technique in the hands of the Ottoman government that facilitated the translation of imperial objectives of the 1826 regulation into practice, the formation of the waqf in tune with government's desired outcomes, and the construction of governable bodies, as well as providing a controlling device from a distance (Latour, 1987; Miller & Rose, 1990). This article also aims to show how accounting and accountability techniques were used to make people calculable in the organizational spaces of an Islamic state standing in history (Foucault, 1991a). Thus, this article adds to the Foucauldian understanding of the role and functioning of accounting by examining a non-western oriented setting.
- BildiriAçık Erişim2011The love of money is the root of all evil: Pay satisfaction and cpi as moderators
Tang, Thomas Li-Ping; Sutarso, Toto; Ansari, Mahfooz A.; Lim, Vivien Kim Geok; Teo, Thompson Sian Hin; Arias-Galicia, Fernando; Garber, Ilya; Vlerick, Peter; Liang, Jian; Akande, Adebowale
By incorporating pay satisfaction at Level 1 and Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) at Level 2, we investigated the relationship between the love of money and self-reported corrupt intent among 6,382 managers in 31 geopolitical entities across six continents. Our significant cross-level three-way interaction effect showed that for managers with high pay satisfaction, the intensity (slope) of the love of money to corrupt intent relationship was almost identical in high or low CPI entities but the former had the lowest magnitude of corrupt intent, whereas the latter had the highest. For those with low pay satisfaction, the slope was the steepest in high CPI entities, but was flat in the low CPI entities and the difference between the two was significant.
