- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Green-synthesis of iron nanoparticles using wild cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus L.) fruit extract and their patulin and HMF adsorption capacities along with biological activities
Kobya, Havva Nur; Gül, Esra; Karpuz, Ömer; Baltacı, Cemalettin
In this study, iron nanoparticles (YBFeNPs) were green-synthesized using the aqueous extract (YB-E) of wild cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus L.) fruit to evaluate their potential applications in food safety. The synthesized YBFeNPs were investigated through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses. YBFeNPs showed higher total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, and total antioxidant capacity compared to the original extract, suggesting that plant metabolites enhance NP bioactivity. Antioxidant capacity was further validated by DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays, which demonstrated strong radical scavenging and reducing power. The antibacterial activity of YBFeNPs was assessed against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus faecalis, revealing concentration-dependent effects with the highest inhibition zone of 14.5 ± 0.4 mm for E. coli. The chemical composition of the YB-E extract was analyzed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, identifying quinic acid, a polyol, and phenolic compounds such as chlorogenic acid (1.45 mg/g) and naringenin (0.02 mg/g). Additionally, the adsorption capacities of YBFeNPs were investigated against patulin and hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), toxic compounds posing significant threats to food safety. The NPs demonstrated effective adsorption of both patulin and HMF, achieving maximum adsorption rates of 61.05% and 46.12%, respectively, at a concentration of 5.0 g/L after 240 min.

Polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) has attracted considerable attention in recent years due to its layered structure and donor groups such as terminal amines and triazine units. In this study, PCN was synthesized from melamine and employed for the first time as a support material for the immobilization of cellulase, a key enzyme used in numerous industrial applications. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis revealed that ranged from 219 to 375 nm in size, thereby confirming their nanoscale layered morphology. Cellulase from Aspergillus sp. was immobilized onto PCN using three methods. In the first approach, cellulase was adsorbed onto PCN to form PCN@cellulase. In the second method, PCN@cellulase was cross-linked with glutaraldehyde (PCN@cellulase/Glu). Finally, the primary amino group of PCN was modified with glutaraldehyde, and the cellulase was immobilized onto this support via covalent attachment (PCN/Glu@cellulase). Each cellulase preparation was assessed for its optimal pH, temperature conditions, thermal stability, and enzyme kinetics. The optimal pH was 5.5 for all cellulase preparations, while the optimal temperature was 45 °C for free cellulase and 55 °C for all immobilized cellulase preparations. Thermal stability of PCN@cellulase, PCN@cellulase/Glu, and PCN/Glu@cellulase increased by 2.1-, 2.7-, and 3.7-fold, respectively, compared to the free cellulase. PCN/Glu@cellulase showed a 1.4-fold higher catalytic efficiency than the free cellulase and retained 80% of its initial activity after 10 reuses. This work highlights PCN as a green, metal-free, and easy-to-prepare support for enzyme immobilization, thereby opening new possibilities for sustainable bioprocessing applications.

Kostas, Rabia Yasa; Bozbeyoglu, Pinar; Altuner, Elif Esra; Elmas, Muzaffer
Fuel desulfurization is crucial due to the harmful effects of acid rain, air pollution, and health issues associated with sulfur compounds from fossil fuel combustion. Stricter international regulations require reducing sulfur content in fuels to ultra- low levels (<15 ppm), which current hydrodesulfurization (HDS) technology struggles to achieve due to high energy costs and inefficiencies with refractory aromatic sulfur compounds, such as dibenzothiophene (DBT). This gap in technology is driving the development of new solutions. This study explores the integration of materials science, chemical engineering, and artificial intelligence (AI) to meet ultra- low sulfur targets. It highlights alternative strategies, such as adsorptive (ADS) and oxidative (ODS) desulfurization, using advanced nanocomposite materials, including MetalOrganic Frameworks (MOFs), graphene hybrids, and zeolites. These innovative materials focus on “precision targeting” and “molecular recognition,” offering greater efficiency under milder conditions compared to traditional HDS methods AI and computational science are crucial for identifying the most suitable materials among a vast array of candidates. Combining Density Functional Theory (DFT) with Machine Learning (ML) accelerates material discovery by transitioning from a trial- and- error approach to an “inverse design” method. Successful AI tools, including Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Genetic Algorithms (GAs), have been proven effective in optimising desulfurization processes through real- world examples. In summary, achieving cleaner fuels requires innovative materials guided by AI. The study also addresses the challenges of scaling this interdisciplinary approach and envisions the potential for transforming desulfurization from a cost centre into a profit centre through precise molecular separation.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026The effect of behavioral factors related to cashlessness on the perception of green finance
Özbek, Adem; Çam, Alper Veli; Soydaş, Şafak Sönmez; Barut, Abdulkadir; Sharabati, Abdel-Aziz Ahmad
This study aims to examine the effects of behavioral factors shaping cashless payment behaviors in Turkey on green finance perception. The study focuses on subconscious factors such as functional benefit, economic benefit, psychological benefit, attitude toward technology, and perceived behavioral control. Data were collected from 520 participants aged 18 and older via an online survey and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The findings reveal that functional benefit, perceived behavioral control, and attitudes toward technology significantly and positively influence perceptions of green finance, while economic and psychological benefits do not have a significant effect on behavioral control. The results reveal that behavioral factors such as ease of use and attitudes toward technology play a more significant role in individuals’ adoption of cashless payment systems than rational economic gain expectations. The study contributes to the literature by showing that cashless payment behaviors contribute to the development of sustainable finance and environmental awareness. It also provides practical recommendations for policymakers and financial institutions on improving digital payment infrastructure and user experience to promote green finance.

Plant-mediated synthesis has emerged as a sustainable method for producing functional nanocomposites with diverse applications, including clean energy, photocatalysis, electrochemical storage, and environmental cleanup. This approach differs from traditional chemical processes, which often require harsh conditions; instead, plant-derived systems combine reduction, nucleation, stabilization, and assembly in a single reaction environment. Phytochemicals such as polyphenols, flavonoids, and proteins act as both reducing agents and structure-directing agents, enabling the formation of various materials under gentle conditions.
- MakaleYalnız künye2026Comparison of Zn recovery prediction from carbonate ores with machine-learning methods
Erkan, Ilker; Günen, Mehmet Akif
This study addresses the challenge of predicting zinc (Zn) recovery from carbonate ores via sodium hydroxide (NaOH) leaching. This complex process influenced by variable ore composition, surface passivation effects, and nonlinear reaction dynamics, which complicate reagent optimization and process control in hydrometallurgical operations. To tackle this, a dataset containing 422 experimental observations was compiled from previous studies, incorporating ore composition and process parameters, such as NaOH concentration, leaching time, temperature, and solid-to-liquid ratio. Four regression models (decision tree, neural network, generalized additive model, and random forest) were trained and evaluated using performance metrics, such as coefficient of determination (R2), root mean squared error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and symmetrical mean absolute percentage error (SMAPE). Among these, the random forest model achieved the best predictive accuracy, with R2 value of 0.8541 on the test set and the lowest error rates, demonstrating its effectiveness in capturing the complex relationships between input variables and Zn recovery. Explainable artificial intelligence, particularly SHapley additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis, revealed that NaOH concentration, leaching time, and solid-to-liquid ratio had the most positive influence on Zn recovery, whereas elements such as Ca, Fe, and Pb had inhibitory effects. These findings align with known geochemical behavior and provide valuable insights for reagent optimization and process efficiency in leaching processes. This study demonstrates the practical potential of machine learning in mineral processing, offering a scalable framework for optimizing Zn recovery from non-sulfide ores and a data-driven approach to enhance decision-making in hydrometallurgical applications.

Ozdes, Duygu; Turfan, Fatma Asya; Seker, Serdal; Kavgaci, Gonca; Onal, Yunus
In this study, a sustainable activated carbon was successfully prepared from Scots pine sawdust via boric acid activation (H3BO3-AC-SPS) and evaluated for phenol adsorption from aqueous solutions. The physicochemical characteristics of the adsorbent were investigated using FTIR, SEM-EDX, XRD, and BET analyses, while the effects of solution pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial phenol concentration, temperature, ionic strength, and reusability without regeneration on the adsorption performance were systematically examined. H3BO3-AC-SPS exhibited excellent adsorption performance over a wide pH range (5–8), showed good tolerance to coexisting inorganic ions and organic contaminants, and retained appreciable adsorption efficiency over five consecutive adsorption cycles without regeneration. Phenol uptake increased with temperature, and NaOH enabled partial desorption of phenol. The adsorption kinetics and equilibrium data were analyzed using both linear and nonlinear regression approaches and comparatively evaluated based on the coefficient of determination (R2), sum of squared errors (SSE), and root mean square error (RMSE). The pseudo-second order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm exhibited the best predictive performance, with the Langmuir model estimating a maximum adsorption capacity of 65.4 mg g−1. The adsorption mechanism may involve π–π interactions, hydrogen bonding, pore filling, and hydrophobic interactions. In addition, an artificial neural network (ANN) model accurately predicted the adsorption behavior, yielding a high correlation coefficient (R = 0.9789). The applicability of H3BO3-AC-SPS was further demonstrated in stream water and mining wastewater. These findings demonstrate that boric acid activation is an effective strategy for converting Scots pine sawdust into a high-performance adsorbent and that integrating linear and nonlinear adsorption modeling with statistical error analysis provides a reliable framework for interpreting adsorption behavior. - MakaleAçık Erişim2026The effect of mine waste ratio and curing duration on the mechanical properties of ground granulated blast furnace slag-based geopolymer mortars
Aksüt, Yavuz Selim; Nas, Evin; Sünnetçi, Kadir; Kaya, Yusuf
This study investigates the mechanical and microstructural behavior of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS)-based geopolymer mortars in which mining waste (MW) was used as a partial binder replacement (0–30%) under ambient water curing for 7–90 days. Increasing MW content reduced workability and slightly prolonged setting due to its coarser and less reactive characteristics. Mechanical performance improved with curing time and mixtures with moderate MW levels achieved the best strength and microstructural densification. Water absorption and porosity decreased with age, reflecting progressive gel formation. Scanning electron microscope–X-ray diffraction (SEM-XRD) analyses verified matrix densification and enhanced gel development at intermediate MW ratios. Overall, the findings show that controlled MW incorporation can optimize the balance between strength, pore structure and sustainability, enabling ambient cured GGBFS-based geopolymers without thermal curing. The study provides new insights by using MW as a binder phase replacement while preserving precursor chemistry, a rarely explored approach.

In this study, Ag/ZnO nanoparticles (Ag/ZnO NPs) were synthesized via a green route using Vitis labrusca L. extract and evaluated for their bioactive, environmental performance. BM-1 and BM-2 were prepared under different precursor/extract ratios and pH conditions to assess the influence of synthesis parameters. UV–Vis, FT-IR, XRD, HRTEM, DSC, and EDX analyses indicated the successful formation of Ag/ZnO nanostructures with distinct physicochemical features. HRTEM analysis determined that BM-1 exhibited an average particle diameter of 23.18 ± 11.84 nm, while BM-2 demonstrated a mean size of 6.14 ± 1.30 nm. The corresponding relative size-dispersion values were 0.261 for BM-1 and 0.045 for BM-2, indicating a more uniform particle size distribution for BM-2. Antioxidant assays showed that BM-2 exhibited the strongest overall antioxidant performance in DPPH, ABTS•⁺, Fe3+, and Cu2+ assays. Both NPs exhibited antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and showed stronger effects than the grape extract alone. Cytotoxicity assays revealed dose-dependent inhibition in A549 and HeLa cancer cells, while lower toxicity was observed in normal ARPE-19 cells, suggesting cell-type-dependent biological response. In adsorption experiments, the NPs effectively removed malachite green, with isotherm analysis providing stronger support for the Langmuir model for BM-1 and comparable Langmuir and Freundlich fits for BM-2, while the pseudo-second-order model provided the best description of the adsorption kinetics. The maximum dye adsorption capacities were 85.5 mg/g for BM-1 and 101.3 mg/g for BM-2. Under optimum conditions (5.0 g/L NPs, 240 min), the highest HMF removal efficiencies reached 44.49% for BM-2 in standard aqueous solutions, whereas competitive matrix interactions in apple juice limited the maximum efficiency to 29.27%. Overall, this study highlights the value of integrating green synthesis, bioactivity, dye adsorption, and food-related contaminant removal within a single Ag/ZnO nanoplatform.

Karan, Halil; Yıldırım, Aybeniz; Yılmaz, Fırat; Özgen, İnanç; Aydoğmuş, Ercan; Gül, Abdulkadir
Silkworm-rearing residues are an underused biomass resource that can be converted into value-added products. In this study, a condensable liquid product (SWP-Liq) was produced from these residues by pyrolysis at 325 ± 5 °C and evaluated for its chemical composition and in vitro biological activities. SWP-Liq yielded phenolic-, flavonoid-, and triterpenoid-equivalent values of 218.47 ± 22.40 mg GAE/g, 79.13 ± 3.55 mg QE/g, and 55.54 ± 6.15 mg EE/g, respectively. The ABTS•+ assay showed a higher radical-scavenging response than DPPH, while Fe3+- and Cu2+-reducing activities were also observed. SWP-Liq inhibited 5-LOX with an IC50 of 33.05 ± 1.10 µg/mL, whereas α-glucosidase inhibition was weaker. Antibacterial activity against all four tested bacterial species was observed at 8 mg/mL but not at 4 mg/mL. Targeted LC–MS/MS quantified five phenolic constituents, with p-coumaric acid (1599.71 µg/g), chlorogenic acid (871.43 µg/g), and ferulic acid (285.50 µg/g) being the most abundant. Overall, these findings support the further investigation of silkworm feeding waste as a feedstock for thermochemical valorization into chemically and biologically evaluable bio-based fractions.
- MakaleYalnız künye2026Mechanical properties of polypropylene fiber-reinforced shotcrete based chromite flotation waste using a nondestructive testing method
Aksüt, Yavuz Selim; Seferoğlu, Mehmet Tevfik
This study examines the mechanical behavior and non-destructive assessment of shotcrete reinforced with polypropylene fibers (PPFs) and incorporating chromite flotation waste (CFW) as a partial substitute for fine aggregate. Shotcrete mixtures were prepared with four CFW replacement levels (0–30%) and four PPFs volume fractions (0–1%) and their compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and static modulus of elasticity were evaluated. Poisson's ratio and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) were experimentally determined. The effect of fiber reinforcement and waste incorporation on the mechanical behavior was evaluated through statistical correlation, simple regression and multivariable predictive modeling approaches. The results showed that moderate PPFs contents (0.25–0.5%) generally enhanced compressive and tensile performance while excessive fiber dosage (1%) led to strength and stiffness reductions due to increased heterogeneity, fiber agglomeration and void formation at high CFW replacement levels. Increasing CFW content resulted in systematic reductions in UPV values with an average decrease of approximately 3–4% per 10% CFW replacement indicating changes in matrix continuity and internal structure. However, these UPV reductions were not directly proportional to losses in mechanical strength or elastic stiffness. Correlation analyses revealed weak to moderate relationships between UPV and mechanical properties confirming that UPV alone is insufficient to represent the complex behavior of fiber-reinforced, waste-based shotcrete systems. Simple UPV-based regression models exhibited limited predictive capability for both compressive strength (R2 ~ 0.16) and static modulus of elasticity (R2 ~ 0.002). In contrast, multivariable regression models incorporating normalized UPV, CFW replacement ratio and PPFs volume fraction together with their interaction terms, significantly improved prediction accuracy. The proposed models achieved high coefficients of determination (R2 ~ 0.86 for compressive strength and R2 ~ 0.97 for static elastic modulus) with substantially reduced root mean square error (RMSE) values. Finally, the findings demonstrate that UPV can be effectively used as a non-destructive indicator for estimating the strength and stiffness of PPFs reinforced shotcrete incorporating CFW only when material specific parameters are explicitly considered.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Pyrolysis-based valorization of Pinus sylvestris bark waste into bioactive fractions: LC–MS/MS analysis and antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and antibacterial activities
Gül, Abdulkadir
In this study, bark waste from the forest industry derived from Pinus sylvestris was processed by pyrolysis extraction, and the chemical compositions and biological activities of the resulting light (PLF) and heavy (PHF) fractions were comparatively investigated. When the extraction yields of the pyrolysis fractions were compared, PHF (20.80%) showed a significantly higher recovery than PLF (10.35%). Total phenolic content (TPC) was higher in the PHF (365.80 GAE/g), whereas total flavonoid content (TFC) was concentrated in the PLF (200.80 mg QE/g). LC–MS/MS analyses of the PHF fraction, which exhibited more pronounced biological activity, revealed caffeic acid (7190.65 µg/g) and protocatechuic acid (2694.30 µg/g) as the predominant phenolic compounds. Antioxidant capacity analyses indicated that the PLF exhibited stronger radical scavenging activity, lower IC50 values in DPPH and ABTS⁺• assays (50.01 and 101.60 µg/mL, respectively) and higher TAC values (901.00 mg TE/L). Fe3+ and Cu2+ reducing assays demonstrated strong redox activity in both fractions, with Cu2+ reducing capacity particularly higher in PLF. In enzyme inhibition studies, the PHF showed stronger inhibition against 5-lipoxygenase (IC50 = 29.28 µg/mL) and α-glucosidase (IC50 = 82.50 µg/mL) compared to PLF. The antibacterial potential of the fractions was assessed using Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The PHF exhibited significant inhibition zones, particularly against P. aeruginosa (17.40 mm) and S. aureus (13.40 mm). Consequently, these findings suggest that pyrolysis-based fractionation may be an effective and sustainable method for converting P. sylvestris bark waste into functional fractions with high antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and antibacterial potential.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Thermochemical Activation of Lightweight Slag–Perlite Alkali-Activated Slag (AAS): Overcoming Aggregate Brittleness and Sulfate Degradation
Eker, Hasan; Demir Şahin, Demet
The successful realization of a circular economy in the cement industry, coupled with a substantial reduction in carbon emissions, relies on the development of sustainable alternative binder systems. This study investigated the physicomechanical performance and sulfate resistance of composites produced by alkali activation of natural perlite and blast furnace slag. The aim of the research was to improve mechanical properties under low- and medium-alkalinity conditions (5–10 M NaOH). The samples were cured at an ambient temperature of 20 °C and then treated with heat at 60 °C. These samples were then mechanically processed and subjected to five soak–dry cycles in 5% and 10% Na2SO4 solutions. The results showed that heat treatment resulted in the formation of a dense C-A-S-H gel, increasing compressive strength approximately eightfold, from 11.64 MPa to 92 MPa. However, perlite’s porous and brittle structure limits its flexural strength to 0.27 MPa; this value is insufficient for structural applications. Under severe sulfate attack (10% Na2SO4), samples cured at ambient temperature showed a 12% mass increase in the first cycle due to solution infiltration into capillary voids. As a consequence of extensive ettringite and gypsum formation, the specimens experienced severe deterioration, resulting in a complete loss of mechanical integrity and a residual compressive strength of 0 MPa. In contrast, heat-treated samples showed limited ion diffusion due to a denser matrix and an improved aggregate interface transition zone, resulting in a 2.6% mass increase and a residual compressive strength of 5.17 MPa. Consequently, the obtained findings indicate that thermally treated alkali-activated slag–perlite composites exhibit high resistance against sodium sulfate attack and may have potential for use in specific industrial environments with high sulfate concentrations. However, the performance of these materials under more complex aggressive conditions, such as mining environments involving magnesium sulfate exposure and acidic drainage waters, should be further validated through future studies.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Microwave-assisted natural deep eutectic solvent-based system for sustainable eritadenine extraction from shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes)
Kaya, Murat; Berktas, Serap; Alasalvar, Hamza; Cam, Mustafa
Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) mushrooms contain a significant level of eritadenine, a cholesterol-lowering compound. However, volatile organic solvents such as methanol are commonly used in the extraction of eritadenine. To overcome this disadvantage, in the present study, microwave-assisted natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) extraction was tested for the extraction of eritadenine. The efficiency of NADESs was compared with benchmark solvents (water, aqueous ethanol, aqueous methanol). NADES, composed of betaine and sorbitol, demonstrated superior efficiency in the extraction of eritadenine. Based on the results obtained from preliminary experiments, microwave-assisted extraction was optimized using a statistical optimization method. A microwave power of 300 W and an extraction time of 15 s were established as optimal conditions with an eritadenine content of 10.63 mg/g dry weight (DW). Further comparisons using NADES revealed the superiority of microwaves over homogenization and stirring methods. The highest level of eritadenine was measured with the microwave-assisted method (10.56 mg/g DW), followed by homogenization (7.22 mg/g DW) and stirring (1.03 mg/g DW). A similar trend was detected in the total phenolic content of the extracts (microwave: 8.27 mg GAE/g DW, homogenization: 2.32 mg GAE/g DW, and stirring: 0.46 mg GAE/g DW). The DPPH and ABTS antioxidant capacities of the extracts ranged from 1.18 to 29.40 mg TE/g DW and 2.42-34.69 mg TE/g DW, respectively. According to the sample preparation metric of sustainability tool, the microwave-assisted approach for the extraction of eritadenine was more sustainable due to the short extraction time. Overall, NADES combined with microwave technology represents an efficient approach for recovering eritadenine, enhancing extraction efficiency and sustainability from shiitake mushrooms.

The mounting global demand for energy signifies that we must depend on fossil fuels, which engenders environmental degradation and precipitates the emission of substantial quantities of sulfur oxides (SOx). Protecting themselves from environmental pollution is a top priority for many countries. Proper removal of sulfur- containing compounds from fossil fuels is becoming a major focus. Fuels such as diesel, fuel oil, and gasoline are particularly important in this regard. Fuels such as diesel, fuel oil, and gasoline are particularly important in this regard. The numerous negative consequences of traditional hydrodesulfurization (HDS) methods are what researchers focus on, and these methods are limited. Some examples of these negative effects include higher costs, the use of too much pressure and temperature, and using too much hydrogen. Scientific studies show that biosourced nanocomposite materials are good for desulfurization methods because they can reduce the potential negative consequences. Using raw materials such as microorganisms, biopolymers, and plant extracts is one of the most important ways to increase energy efficiency and eliminate chemical emissions. The large surface areas, enhanced active site homogeneity, and diverse functional groups of nanocomposite materials obtained from such biosourced raw materials make them promising candidates for use in adsorptive and oxidative desulfurization processes. Metal- metal oxide (Fe, Ni, Cu, TiO2) and carbon- based (graphene, carbon nanotube, and biochar- supported) nanocomposites are particularly preferred for achieving high sulfur removal with low energy consumption. The provision of information on the production methods, chemical properties, sulfur removal methods, and recent scientific research on biosourced nanocomposites is the purpose of this section. In addition, the environmental benefits, economic benefits, and potential roles of biosourced materials in alternative energy systems are discussed.

Bio-nanocomposites, produced from renewable resources, stand out as one of the promising next-generation material classes for both biomedical and environmental applications due to their biocompatible and biodegradable structures. However, the vast and complex design space of these materials, which depends on numerous variables including the type of biopolymer matrix and the type and concentration of the nanostructured filler, makes their optimization quite challenging with traditional “trial-and-error” based research methods. This study provides a general overview of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based methodology that holds the potential to overcome this complexity. In this context, the limitations of the traditional “forward screening” approach are discussed, and the “inverse design” paradigm, based on the idea of “designing a material with desired properties,” is proposed as a solution. The study outlines the potential roles of various AI tools in this field, from supervised learning models to deep learning approaches and optimisation algorithms. This theoretical framework is substantiated by practical case studies that range from drug delivery to sustainable packaging. The case studies demonstrate how AI not only enables the prediction of properties but also facilitates strategically developing materials for a particular function, thereby accelerating the discovery process. Finally, current challenges, such as data scarcity and the interpretability of models, are addressed, and future visions to overcome these obstacles, including physics-informed AI, autonomous discovery platforms, and human-AI partnerships, are discussed. It is concluded that this synergy has the capacity to stimulate a new era of innovation in sustainable materials science.

Legacy ore beneficiation plants often operate slurry pumps at fixed speed despite variable sump inflow and slurry conditions, which can increase electricity demand and complicate level control. This study evaluates a variable-speed retrofit in which a variable frequency drive was integrated with level feedback and proportional-integral control for a legacy slurry pumping duty. Measured average operating power decreased from 25.6 kW before retrofit to 11.6 kW after implementation, documenting a substantial reduction in electrical demand under the observed operating regime. Because hydraulic-duty data were unavailable for both periods, this result is not presented as a duty-normalised specific-energy reduction. Process interpretation was supported by a bounded proxy framework based on a flowsheet-consistent solids band over 177 days. The proxy analysis linked solids variability to derived slurry density behaviour and operability implications. Overall, the study documents measured electrical-demand reduction and provides a framework for discussing retrofit performance where plant instrumentation is limited.
