Duran, Selcen Uzun; Kucukomeroglu, Belgin; Damla, Nevzat; Taskin, Halim; Celik, Necati; Cevik, Uğur; Ersoy, Hakan
The current study presents the results of the activity of radionuclides in spa waters, and evaluates their radiological influences on the population consuming these waters in the Central and Eastern Black Sea regions of Turkey. Since these waters are used for therapy and consumption purposes unconsciously, their radiological impact on the people was computed by taking into consideration the annual intake through ingestion of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, 137Cs and 222Rn. The mean activities were estimated to be 11.35 for gross alpha, 6.23 for gross beta, 2.96 for 226Ra, 0.42 for 232Th, 0.069 for 137Cs, 0.19 for 40K, and 267 Bq L–1 for 222Rn, respectively. The estimated effective doses from spa water were found to be 49.77 µSv a–1 (226Ra), 5.95 µSv a–1 (232Th), 0.07 µSv a–1 (137Cs), 0.83 µSv a–1 (40K) and 56.03 µSv a–1 (222Rn). These values were evaluated and compared with related verified values from literature. Also, physico-chemical characterizations of spa water samples considered in the current study were investigated. This study would be useful for consumers and official authorities for the assessment of radiation exposure risk due to usage of the considered spa waters.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Evaluation of potentially toxic element contents and Pb isotopic compositions in Ankara Stream sediments within an urban catchment in central Turkey
Eker, Çiğdem Saydam; Sipahi, Ferkan; Özkan, Özay; Gümüş, Mustafa Kemal
This study aimed to interpret the spatial distribution, enrichment factor (EF), and geo-accumulation of potentially toxic elements in the bed sediments (ASBS) and Pleistocene-aged overbank sediments (ASOS) of the Ankara Stream in Turkey. The potential toxic pollution of the investigated potentially toxic elements was defined by evaluating the EF, geo-accumulation index (Igeo), and Pb anthropogenic contribution. The distributions of As, Ni, and Co in the analyzed sediments were uniform in the ASBS and ASOS along the length of the stream. The EF and Igeo values indicated that ASBS and ASOS were significantly polluted by As and Ni and moderately polluted by Co, Zn, and Cu. ASBS was locally strongly polluted by Pb and Cd. Pb anthropogenic contribution was estimated at an average of > 100% in the ASBS and ASOS. The potentially toxic element levels and distribution patterns revealed that industrial activities, gasoline combustion, vehicular emission, phosphate fertilizers and natural sources were probable causes of metal pollution in Ankara Stream sediments. These potentially toxic elements were transported by atmospheric conditions and stream water. The potentially toxic elements in Ankara Stream increased with each passing day and were important in evaluating the potential toxicity risks to living organisms. Thus, suitable measures should be taken to ensure appropriate treatment of wastewater before toxic residues are disposed into the nearby stream. Chimney filter, treatment plants, and appropriate technology should be used in the organized industrial zone to prevent atmospheric pollution.
- BildiriAçık Erişim2017Fluoride levels in the Eastern Black Sea Basin streams, Turkey
Bayram, A.; Satilmiş, U.; Nas, S.S.; Kemer, B.
The aim of this study is to monitor the fluoride ion (F-), as well as chloride ion (Cl-), variation in the Eastern Black Sea Basin streams, and to evaluate drinking water quality of these streams, with reference to national and international directives and guidelines. The water samples (240) were semimonthly collected from three surface water resources, namely from the Degirmendere and Galyan streams in Trabzon Province, the biggest city on the Southeastern Black Sea Coast with a total population of 768 417, and the Harşit Stream in Gümüşhane and Giresun provinces. The monitoring results have revealed that the average F-concentration had varied between 0.154 and 0.200 mg/l in the Degirmendere Stream and between 0.156 and 0.163 mg/l in the Galyan Stream, respectively. However, the treated stream waters had lower F-concentrations, varying between 0.010 and 0.080 mg/l, than the untreated stream waters. In the Harşit Stream, the average F-concentrations were at relatively higher values, which ranged from 0.211 to 0.296 mg/l, in the uppermost stations, however showed a steadily decreasing trend throughout the lowermost stations and fell from 0.230 to 0.141 mg/l due to the hydropower dam reservoirs, namely Torul, Kürtün, and Akköy, operated in the watershed. The average Cl-concentrations have varied between 2.00 and 6.48 mg/l. On the one hand, the waters from the Degirmendere, Galyan, and Harşit streams are classified as high quality, considering the upper threshold values of 1.5 mg F-/l and 250 mg Cl-/l. On the other hand, these streams can be regarded as the fluoride-poor water resources.
- MakaleYalnız künye2017Environmental impact of Gümüşhane City, Turkey, waste area in terms of heavy metal pollution
Vural, Alaaddin; Gundogdu, Ali; Akpinar, Ibrahim; Baltaci, Cemalettin
The aim of this study is to investigate the occurrence of a heavy metal contamination in a solid waste site of Gümüşhane City, Turkey, to examine the dimensions of the risk of contamination, and to present suggestions for possible solutions. For this purpose, heavy metal contents of soil and leachate samples taken from a Gümüşhane waste site were determined by a new method, microwave plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (MP-AES). When the obtained results are compared with background and control values, it can be seen that the region carries contamination risks, especially in terms of heavy metals such as Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni, and Co. To examine the environmental effects of the landfill area in more detail, geodeposition index (Igeo), enrichment factor (EF), contamination index (PI), and combined contamination index (IPI) parameters are used. In addition, the samples taken from an area supposed to be free of pollution risk were also analyzed as control samples, and the obtained data were statistically compared with the results of the waste area. It is determined that the results of landfill waste site are dissimilar to those of comparison samples in terms of investigated metals, and that they contained higher values in general.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2016Diversity and ecology of benthic algae in Karagöl Lake, Karagöl-Sahara National Park (Şavşat, Artvin, Turkey)
Akar, Bülent; Şahın, Bülent
Benthic algal flora of Karagöl Lake, its seasonal variation, and the physical and chemical parameters of the water were studied between October 2008 and September 2010. The algal flora consisted of 112 taxa belonging to the divisions Charophyta (41), Chlorophyta (33), Cyanobacteria (18), Euglenozoa (17), Miozoa (2), and Ochrophyta (1). Six desmid taxa found in this research are new records for the freshwater algal flora of Turkey. The qualitative dominance of benthic taxa typical of slightly alkaline and mesotrophic ecosystems was observed. The qualitative and seasonal variations in epipelic taxa analyzed were dependent on the physicochemical characteristics of the water. Water quality was analyzed on the basis of benthic taxa, which are bioindicators. The physicochemical properties of the water are suitable for the development of a rich algal flora (especially desmids). According to the benthic algal composition and indicator species, it is estimated that Karagöl Lake has mesotrophic lake characteristics. This is the first study of benthic algal flora of Karagöl Lake and marks a significant contribution to the knowledge of Karagöl-Sahara National Park’s aquatic biodiversity.
- MakaleYalnız künye2016Investigation of the quality and physical-geochemical characteristics of the drinking water in Gümüşhane (Turkey) city central
Sipahi, Ferkan; Uslu, Sultan
The physical (turbidity, color, smell, taste, pH, and conductivity) and geochemical properties (Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Mn, Al, K, Cl−, HCO3 −, SO4 2−, Fe, Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cr) of the drinking water in Gümüşhane city center were determined. This city center constitutes the study area. The pH levels of the water samples ranged from 6.3 to 8.2, and their conductivities ranged between 240 and 900 μS. These findings were concordant with the drinking water standards of the Turkey Standard Institute and the World Health Organization. The hardness of the water samples in the study area was between 18.1 and 115.1 °Fr. These samples were classified as extremely hard, hard, and quite hard. In addition, an assessment using the criteria for Inland Surface Water Classification indicated that considering certain parameters (pH levels, amount of Na, SO4 2−, Fe, Mn, Al, Co, Ni, Cu, and Cr), the samples belonged to class I (high quality) water. When Cl− amount and conductivity were considered, the samples belonged to the first and second classes (less polluted) of water. The water in the study area was generally classified as carbonated and sulfated (Ca + Mg > Na + K) water classes. This water contained more weak acids than strong acids (HCO3 − + CO3 2− > Cl− + SO4 2−). The pH levels (6.3–8.2) of the water in the study area were unrelated to the varying concentrations of metals in the water. Elements such as Fe, Ni, Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cu increase in the water through the water–rock interaction in the area in which water rises or through the mixture of water with either mine or industrial wastes. In addition, several water samples belonged to an acceptable water class for drinking and usage.
- MakaleYalnız künye2015Assessment of bearing capacity and permeability of foundation rocks at the Gumustas Waste Dam Site (NE Turkey) using empirical and numerical analysis
Alemdag, Selcuk
In this study, the bearing capacity and permeability of andesite and andesitic breccia rock masses, forming the basement for Gumustas waste dam, planned as a rock fill housing, were evaluated using various empirical equations and numerical analysis. The total stress constituting over the basement caused through ore waste building up in the body of dam and reservoir was determined by a finite element method. Then, this stress was compared with bearing capacities calculated for the rock masses. The permeability of rock masses in dam site and the lake were appraised with pressure water test experiments (Lugeon method), performed within opened bore holes and finite element method (seepage analysis). Since chemicals seeping from waste dams into the ground water are of vital importance for human health and the environment, the dam body must be made completely impervious using upstream slope and reservoir geosynthetics.
- MakaleYalnız künye2015Assessment of metal pollution associated with an alteration area: Old Gümüşhane, NE Black Sea
Vural, Alaaddin
The objective of this study was to determine the potential environmental risks associated with the Kirkpavli (Old Gümüşhane in northern Turkey) alteration area by quantifying pollution in soil. The Kirkpavli (Old Gümüşhane) alteration area is situated at the south of the deposit with the same name of gold-silver-bearing lead, zinc, and copper in the southern part of the Black Sea Tectonic Unit (Eastern Pontides). In this study, 28 soil samples acquired from the alteration area were analyzed for contents of some main elements including lead (Pb), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), and arsenic (As). Contents of the elements in the area were determined, and high values were obtained such as 1,171 mg/kg for As, 12.4 mg/kg for Cd, 77.3 mg/kg for Co, 341 mg/kg for Cu, 1,172 mg/kg for Mn, 51.9 mg/kg for Ni, 3,725 mg/kg for Pb, and 880 mg/kg for Zn. Soil contamination was appraised on the basis of Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), Enrichment Factor (EF), Pollution Index, and Integrated Pollution Index. The calculated results of Igeo, EF, and PI of the elements can be shown in descending order of parameters as As > Pb > Cd > Zn > Cu > Co > Mn. The parameters for some of these elements indicated extremely high contamination (Igeo > 5), extremely high enrichment (EF > 40), and high pollution (PI > 3). High Igeo, EF, and PI values of As, Pb, and Cd in the soil samples mean that soil pollution is typically associated with alteration area. Considering its location and the results of this study, the Kirkpavli alteration area is a significant source of pollution and may have ecotoxicological effects on terrestrial, groundwater, and aquatic ecosystems in the region.
- MakaleYalnız künye2015Equilibrium, kinetics, and thermodynamic evaluation of mercury (II) removal from aqueous solutions by moss (Homalothecium sericeum) biomass
Ozdes, Duygu; Duran, Celal
In the present research, Homalothecium Sericeum was utilized for the first time as an effective and readily available adsorbent in removal of Hg(II) ions from aqueous solutions through a batch adsorption technique. The effects of initial solution pH, contact time, initial Hg(II) and adsorbent concentration, temperature, and ionic strengths were evaluated on the removal efficiency of Hg(II) ions, after being characterized of H. sericeum by different techniques. The maximum Hg(II) adsorption was obtained as 128.2 mg g-1 at initial pH 6.0 with an equilibrium time of 60 min, adsorbent dosage of 5.0 g L-1 and initial Hg(II) concentration range of 50-750 mg L-1. The adsorption behaviors of Hg(II) ions onto H. sericeum were investigated in terms of kinetics (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and intraparticle diffusion models), isotherms (Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin Radushkevich models), and thermodynamics evaluation. Both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were found to be suitable to describe the adsorption equilibrium while the adsorption kinetics followed by the pseudo-second order model. Thermodynamic parameters including the Gibbs free energy (ΔG), enthalpy (ΔH), and entropy (ΔS) changes indicated that the adsorption of Hg(II) ions onto H. sericeum was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic in nature.

ABSTRACT: In the present study, Cd(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) ions were separated and preconcentrated via carrier element-free coprecipitation (CEFC) method by using an organic coprecipitating agent, 1,2-bis-(2-tosyl ethoxy) benzene (BTEB), prior to their flame atomic absorption spectrometric (FAAS) detections. The experimental conditions were optimized in terms of pH of the aqueous solution, BTEB amount, standing time, centrifugation rate and time, and sample volume. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the detection limits for Cd(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) ions were found to be 0.13, 0.67, and 0.46 μg L−1, respectively, and the relative standard deviations for the analyte ions were found to be lower than 4.0%. The accuracy of the method was tested by analyzing certified reference material and spike tests. The method was applied to determine the levels of Cd(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) ions in sea and stream water, macaroni, red lentil, and cracked wheat samples.

Serencam, Huseyin; Ozdes, Duygu; Duran, Celal; Senturk, Hasan Basri
Rosa canina seeds (RCS) is considered as a low-cost and promising adsorbent in removal of metal ions; hence, in the present study, we aimed to test the adsorptive removal of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions by utilizing RCS in a batch process. After characterization of RCS by using several techniques, the effects of various experimental parameters such as initial pH of aqueous solution, contact time, initial Cu(II) concentration, RCS concentration, temperature, and electrolyte concentration were studied upon the adsorption process. The desorption conditions of Cu(II) ions from the loaded RCS were also evaluated. Maximum Cu(II) adsorption was found to occur at pH 6.0 and the equilibrium was established after 60 min of contact time. The adsorption isotherms were described by means of Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin Radushkevich models. The adsorption kinetics were analyzed using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich and intraparticle diffusion models and the adsorption data were well described by the pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic parameters such as the Gibbs free energy (ΔG), enthalpy (ΔH), and entropy (ΔS) changes were also evaluated and it has been found that the adsorption process was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic in the temperature range of 278-313 K.

The adsorption capacity of CTAB-OB was found to be 48.8 and 43.4 mg g-1 for the Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions, respectively. The detection limits for the analyte ions were 0.89 μg L-1 for Pb(II) and 0.37 μg L-1 for Cd(II),while the relative standard deviations were lower than 3.5% for both of them. In order to ensure the accuracy of the method, certified reference material (CRM-SA-C Sandy Soil C) analyses and spike tests were performed. Then the proposed method was applied to sea and stream water, black tea,and Turkish and import coffee samples to determine their Pb(II) and Cd(II) contents.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2014Kinetics, thermodynamics, and equilibrium evaluation of adsorptive removal of methylene blue onto natural illitic clay mineral
Ozdes, Duygu; Duran, Celal; Senturk, Hasan Basri; Avan, Hilal; Bicer, Burcin
The natural illitic clay mineral (NICM) has been used as a low cost and highly effective adsorbent in the removal of a toxic cationic dye, methylene blue (MB), from aqueous solution by a batch adsorption technique. The effects of experimental parameters such as initial pH of the aqueous solution, contact time, initial MB concentration, adsorbent concentration, ionic strength, and temperature were studied in detail upon the adsorption process. The process was found to be independent of initial solution pH and the adequate equilibrium time for the adsorption of MB onto NICM was only 60 m. The experimental data were analyzed by the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models and showed a good fit with both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The monolayer adsorption capacity of NICM was found to be 24.87 mg g-1 by using Langmuir isotherm model. The kinetics of the adsorption were tested using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models. The results showed that the adsorption of MB onto NICM proceeds according to the pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that the present adsorption process was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic in nature.
- MakaleYalnız künye2014Simultaneous separation and preconcentration of Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions by coprecipitation without any carrier element in some food and water samples
Duran, Celal; Tumay, Sureyya O.; Ozdes, Duygu; Serencam, Huseyin; Bektas, Hakan
A simple and highly sensitive separation and preconcentration procedure, which has minimal impact on the environment, has been developed. The procedure is based on the carrier element-free coprecipitation of Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions by using 2-{4-[2-(1H-Indol-3-yl)ethyl]-3-(4-chlorobenzyl)-5-oxo-4,5-dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl}-N′-(pyrrol-2-ylmethyliden)acetohydrazide (ICOTPA), as an organic coprecipitant. The levels of analyte ions were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The detection limits for Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions were found to be 0.27 and 0.58 μg L-1, respectively, and the relative standard deviations for the analyte ions were lower than 4.0%. Spike tests and certified reference material analyses were performed to validate the method. The method was successfully applied for the determination of Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions levels in sea and stream water as liquid samples and red lentil and rice as solid samples.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2014The comparison of different mathematical methods to determine the BOD parameters, a new developed method and impacts of these parameters variations on the design of WWTPs
Sibil, Rahim; Berkun, Mehmet; Bekiroglu, Serkan
One of the most common tests for the determination of strength and organic content of wastewater is the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). This test is widely applied to define organic water pollution and to control the performance of wastewater treatment plants. Generally, BOD is standardized by the measurement of oxygen consumption in 5days (BOD5). But, determination of the ultimate biochemical oxygen demand (BODu), which is taken 28days and the reaction rate constant (k) are necessary to understand the organic strength of the wastewater. In this study, the different mathematical methods in order to determine the BOD parameters (BODu, k) and two different BOD test method (respirometer and dilution method) are investigated comparatively. Also, a new method based on cubic spline method to estimate ultimate BOD values is developed. Moreover, the impacts of BOD parameters on the design of an activated sludge and aerated lagoon systems are analyzed by using a written user-friend program, which is developed for designing WWTPs by the mean of C++ programming language.Analytical results show that there is a satisfactory linear relationship between respirometric and dilution BOD values. Also, the mathematical methods, including new developed method generally provide consistent results with high correlation coefficients. On the other hand, it is found that LOG differences method for respirometric test and the new developed method for dilution test do not give good correlation coefficients. Moreover, activated sludge and aerated lagoons systems' sizes show significant changing depending on the variations of the BOD parameters. Consequently, BOD parameters show significant changes depending on the different test and mathematical methods. Therefore, the changing of these parameters impact a lot of situation such as ultimate BOD estimation, the wastewater treatment plants design, the dimensions of the plants and cost of the plants.
- MakaleYalnız künye2013Separation and pre-concentration of palladium(II) from environmental and industrial samples by formation of a derivative of 1,2,4-triazole complex on Amberlite XAD-2010 resin

The ligand has high affinity for Pd(II) among many other metals that are taken into consideration. The flame atomic absorption spectrometry is employed to determine the concentration of Pd(II). The optimum working conditions which were determined are as follows: 0.05 mol L-1 HNO3 as working medium, 1.0 mol L-1 HCI in acetone as elution solvent, 0.75 mg of PPTTMET amount and 750 mL of sample volume. The system was independent from the flow rates between 3.1 and 23.1 mL min-1. The Pd(II) adsorption capacity of Amberlite XAD-2010 resin was found to be 12.8 mg g-1 and the enrichment factor was calculated as 375. The method was successfully applied for the determination of Pd(II) in motorway dust samples, anodic sludge, gold ore, industrial electronic waste materials and various water samples.
- MakaleYalnız künye2013Biosorption properties of Morus alba L. for Cd (II) ions removal from aqueous solutions
Serencam, Huseyin; Ozdes, Duygu; Duran, Celal; Tufekci, Mehmet
The abundantly available industrial waste product Morus alba L. pomace (MAP) is one of the cost-effective biosorbent for removal of metal ions from aqueous solutions. Hence, in the present study, we aimed to test the ability of MAP to remove Cd(II) ions through batch biosorption process. Firstly, MAP was characterized using several techniques, and then the influence of various experimental parameters such as initial pH of the aqueous solution, initial Cd(II) concentration, contact time, MAP concentration, and temperature were evaluated upon the biosorption process. It was found that the maximum uptake of Cd(II) ions occurred at initial pH 6.0 and optimum contact time was observed as 60 min. Cd(II) ions adsorption on MAP analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models and the maximum monolayer biosorption capacity of MAP was found to be 21.69 mg g-1 by using the Langmuir isotherm model. The pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and intraparticle diffusion models were employed to describe the biosorption kinetics. In order to investigate the thermodynamic properties of the biosorption process, the changes in the Gibbs free energy (â̂†G), enthalpy (â̂†H), and entropy (â̂†S) were also evaluated and it has been concluded that the process was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic in the temperature range of 5-40 C.

A highly sensitive, selective and low cost solid phase extraction (SPE) procedure was developed for separation and enrichment of Au(III) ions in environmental samples prior to its flame atomic absorption spectrometric detection. Au(III)-2-pyridin-5-(4-tolyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PYTOX) complex was adsorbed quantitatively on Amberlite XAD-4 resin in 0.5 mol L-1 HNO3 condition and the elution was carried out with 7.5 mL of 1.0 mol L-1 HCl in acetone. Some analytical parameters, affect the recoveries of Au(III) ions, such as HNO3 concentration of sample solution, amount of PYTOX, type, concentration and volume of eluent, sample volume and concomitants were examined. Adopting optimized experimental conditions, the limit of detection for Au(III) ions was 1.03 μg L-1 with preconcentration factor of 50 and a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 3.7%. The determination of Au(III) ions in anodic slime, gold ore, soil and sea and stream waters was performed after checking the accuracy of the method by addition-recovery tests.
