- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Towards precision dentistry through artificial intelligence and blockchain-based digital Twins: Investigating challenges and solution strategies
Erol, Ismail; Peker, Iskender; Medeni, Ihsan Tolga; Yuce, Fatma
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and digital twins (DT) in dentistry is essential to meet evolving patient expectations and global healthcare challenges. However, realizing their full potential requires addressing significant adoption barriers. While conceptual studies have explored challenges to implementing AI, blockchain, and DT in dentistry, no prior research has systematically analyzed the interrelationships among these obstacles using a structured decision framework. This study employs pentagonal fuzzy (PF) DEMATEL to investigate the connections among challenges to effectively implementing AI and blockchain-based DT in dentistry. Expert opinions highlight ethical considerations and bias and fairness in AI-based DT as the most critical causal challenges. We propose an AI and blockchain-based DT architecture that enables human doctors to leverage DT-based decision support, while AI-driven systems execute high-precision procedures with blockchain-verified workflows. This framework enhances treatment accuracy and personalization in dentistry and offers a scalable model for addressing societal concerns, such as privacy, fairness, and labor dynamics, in technology-driven ecosystems. A pilot study framework is proposed to validate diagnostic accuracy, data security, and treatment customization. Accompanied by stakeholder guidelines, this research bridges dentistry with broader discussions on technology's societal impact, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary strategies to ensure equitable and trustworthy innovation.

Koçak, Tevfik; Kocyigit, Emine; Ağagündüz, Duygu
Background: This study aimed to examine the validity and reliability of the Chrono-Med Diet Score (CMDS) to assess adherence to the Mediterranean diet in Turkish adults. Methods: The methodological research conducted in Gümüşhane and Ordu from January to June 2024, including 592 individuals (62.3% women, 37.7% men, and the mean age 43.4 ± 10.6 years). Data were collected through face‒to‒face interview that contained socio-demographic characteristics, the CMDS, the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS), and 24-h dietary recall. Internal consistency reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, while repeatability was examined using the test–retest method. Construct validity was assessed by the MEDAS, and components of the adapted CMDS obtained from the 24-h dietary recall were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis. The content validity was assessed by the Paired samples t-test and Wilcoxon test. The Bland–Altman test with 95% limits of agreement was used to evaluate the agreement between sum of CMDS. The results were statistically evaluated at a p < 0.05 significance level. Results: The content validity index of CMDS was 0.87. The overall Turkish version of CMDS had acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.853), thus indicating that the score was reliable. The Paired samples t test coefficients between each item and the overall questionnaire ranged from 0.234 to 1.000. A higher intake of olive oil and fish obtained from a 24-h dietary recall was associated with a higher CMDS quartile (p < 0.05). The MEDAS score was correlated with a higher CMDS quartile (p < 0.001). A moderate positive correlation was determined between total CMDS and MEDAS (r = 0.467; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our assessments of the CMDS, consisting of 13 items, in Türkiye demonstrate that it is a viable and reliable instrument to measure adherence to the Mediterranean diet for the adult population. The CMDS is more accurate than other Mediterranean diet scores as it questions about the amount of physical activity and grain products, which helps determine each participant’s eating patterns and general health.

Objective: Cancer patients often experience significant declines in quality of life (QoL), which can elevate suicide risk. In culturally religious societies like Iran, religious coping may serve as a critical buffer against such adverse outcomes. This study examined the relationship between QoL and suicide risk among Iranian cancer patients, with a focus on the mediating role of religious coping. Method: A purposive sample of 350 cancer patients from Tehran was analyzed using validated measures of QoL (EORTC QLQ-C30), suicide risk (Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation), and religious coping (Brief RCOPE-14). Data were analyzed using SPSS v26 and the PROCESS macro v4.0. Results: Bivariate correlations revealed that lower QoL was strongly associated with higher suicide risk (r = -0.62, p < 0.001), while positive religious coping correlated with better QoL (r = 0.48, p < 0.001) and reduced suicide risk (r = -0.41, p < 0.001). Mediation analyses demonstrated that positive religious coping significantly attenuated the QoL-suicide risk relationship (indirect β = -0.09, 95% CI [-0.15, -0.04]), accounting for 17% of the total effect. Negative religious coping, though less prevalent, also mediated this relationship but to a lesser extent (indirect β = -0.03, 95% CI [-0.05, -0.01]). Subgroup analyses indicated that the protective effect of positive religious coping was stronger in advancedstage patients. Conclusion: These findings underscore the importance of integrating spiritual care into oncology settings in Iran, leveraging faith-based resources to enhance resilience and reduce suicide risk. Future research should explore longitudinal and culturally tailored interventions to further elucidate the role of religious coping in cancer survivorship.

Icer, Mehmet Arif; Koçak, Tevfik; Ağagündüz, Duygu; Yıldıran, Hilal
The relationship between serum fetuin-A levels and obesity has not been fully understood. This study aims to elucidate the levels of serum fetuin-A and F/A ratio in obesity and contribute to the literature on whether they could be novel clinical predictors modulated through body composition and nutrition. The study included 73 participants who were obese and 71 participants with normal weight, aged between 18 and 65 years. Certain anthropometric measurements of the individuals were taken, and a body composition analysis was performed. In addition, 3-day food records (consecutive days: 2 weekdays and one weekend day) were taken. Serum levels of fetuin-A (ng/mL) and adiponectin (μg/mL) were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. The F/A ratio was obtained by dividing fetuin-A (ng/mL) by adiponectin (μg/mL). Serum fetuin-A (ng/mL) level and F/A ratio are higher in obese participants than in normal weight (p < 0.05). Body weight (kg) (r = 0.553, p ≤ 0.001), body mass index (kg/m2) (r = 0.492, p ≤ 0.001), waist circumference (cm) (r = 0.522, p ≤ 0.001), body fat percentage (%) (r = 0.203, p = 0.015), serum fasting blood glucose levels (mg/dL) (r = 0.317, p ≤ 0.001), and dietary protein intake (kg) (r = 0.165, p = 0.048) were observed to be positively correlated with serum fetuin-A levels. Positive correlations were also observed between these parameters and the F/A ratio (p < 0.05). Negative correlations were found between serum adiponectin and these parameters (p < 0.05). In addition, when dietary cholesterol intake was kept constant, a 1-unit increase in dietary energy intake (kcal) resulted in a 0.043-fold increase in serum fetuin-A (p < 0.05). The study results support theories suggesting the involvement of serum fetuin-A levels and the F/A ratio in the pathogenesis of obesity. The higher serum fetuin-A levels and F/A ratio found in obese participants may be considered as new clinical determinants that could be regulated through body composition and nutrition.

Aydın, Sefa; Melek, Mesut; Gökrem, Levent
This study introduces a hybrid Brain–Computer (BCI) system with a robust and secure activation mechanism between sessions, aiming to minimize the negative effects of visual stimulus-based BCI systems on user eye health. The system is based on the integration of Electroencephalography (EEG) signals and Electrooculography (EOG) artefacts, and includes an LED stimulus operating at a frequency of 7 Hz for safe activation and objects moving in different directions. While the LED functions as an activation switch that reduces visual fatigue caused by traditional visual stimuli, moving objects provide command generation depending on the user’s intention. In order to evaluate the stability of the system against physiological and psychological conditions, data were collected from 15 participants in two different sessions. The Correlation Alignment (CORAL) method was applied to the data to reduce the variance between sessions and to increase stability. A Bootstrap Aggregating algorithm was used in the classification processes, and with the CORAL method, the system accuracy rate was increased from 81.54% to 94.29%. Compared to similar BCI approaches, the proposed system offers a safe activation mechanism that effectively adapts to users’ changing cognitive states throughout the day by reducing visual fatigue, despite using a low number of EEG channels, and demonstrates its practicality and effectiveness by performing on par or superior to other systems in terms of high accuracy and robust stability.

Peganum harmala is a significant medicinal, aromatic plant used in traditional medicine and the subject of many studies. In this study, the phytochemical compound and mineral profile of the plant's ethanol extract were identified quantitatively. Antioxidant properties were determined by total phenolic and flavonoid content, FRAP, DPPH, CUPRAC, ABTS, metal chelating, and phosphomolybdenum assays. Antidiabetic, anticholinergic, and skin care properties were specified by the inhibition of tyrosinase, α-glucosidase, α-amylase, butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzymes, respectively. In addition, binding interactions of major phytochemicals with all enzymes were investigated by molecular docking studies. The phytochemical compound of the extract contained significant bioactive components such as acacetin, gentisic acid, p-coumaric acid, quinic acid, rutin, apigenin, and chrysin, while the mineral profile was rich in salt elements. AChE, BChE, tyrosinase, α-amylase, and α-glycosidase enzyme inhibitor results were determined as 2.99 mg GALAE/g, 4.14 mg GALAE/g, 35.8 mg KAE/g, 2.76 mmol ACAE/g, and 1.20 mmol ACAE/g, respectively. As a result, it was identified that it had antioxidant properties and strongly inhibited all enzymes except tyrosinase. The docking scores of major bioactive phytochemicals were found to be high. The best binding pose was obtained by docking acacetin into the active site of AChE (PDB: 4EY7), BChE (PDB: 4BDS), α-glucosidase (PDB: 3WY1), α-amylase (PDB: 6GXV) and tyrosinase (PDB: 2Y9X) receptors. Docking score values were calculated as −10.4, −9.2, −8.8, −7.8, and −7.4 kcal/mol, respectively. Thus, it was revealed that P. harmala has an important potential in drug research and treatment of some diseases.

Almasani, Heba; Ture, Hayati
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer. Cancer can be defined as a disease characterized by the uncontrolled division and spread of cells. As with other types of cancer, early diagnosis and treatment play a crucial role in combating skin cancer. Since diagnosis is made through visual examination, factors such as the level of expertise and image artifacts negatively affect diagnostic accuracy and slow down the process.Computer-aided applications used to analyze such images provide faster and more accurate results. Additionally, these methods eliminate factors that reduce diagnostic accuracy during the classification and segmentation of skin lesions. This study classifies skin cancer to benign or malignant using deep learning and machine learning methods. In particular, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have shown promising results in medical image classification. The study evaluates six pre-trained CNN models - VGG16, EfficientNetB7, EfficientNetV2L, DenseNet, ConvNeXtBase and MobileNet - for binary skin lesion classification using the ISIC 2019 dataset. The study first preprocesses and balances the data to enhance performance. The results indicate that the ConvNeXtBase model achieved the highest success with accuracy rate of 84.63% after balancing the data that we have.

Bozbeyoğlu, Pınar; Doğan, Onur; Budak, Burhan
The wastewater from mining facilities contains toxic elements such as arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb). If not disposed of correctly, it can lead to environmental pollution in case of accidents or overflow. Lead-zinc mining activities pose a significant risk of high blood lead levels (BLLs) among workers. Therefore, monitoring the blood lead levels of workers exposed to these heavy metals, especially lead, is crucial. This study aims to determine the levels of potentially harmful elements in the wastewater dam of the largest Zn-Pb mine in the Black Sea Region. It also seeks to assess the environmental and human health risks comprehensively. Additionally, the study aims to establish a relationship between the levels of lead in the mining wastewater in Gumushane and the lead levels accumulated in the blood of workers exposed to this metal. The study analyzed heavy metals such as As, Zn, Cu, Sb, and Pb in mining wastewater using Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS). The results indicated high levels of Pb in the studied wastewater. Furthermore, the blood lead levels of workers in the mining area (n=30; mean: 7.42 μg/dL) exceeded background levels (>40 μg/dL). These results suggest a significant relationship between the presence of lead in wastewater and high lead levels in the blood of individuals with high exposure to concentrated lead.

Demir, Nalan
Mental health issues are increasingly common in modern societies, yet public awareness has not kept pace. The invisibility of psychological disorders and fear of stigma contribute to this gap. Early detection is vital, especially among young people. Literature with its impact on emotional and cognitive development, can help raise awareness and provide support. This study examines Holly Bourne’s Am I Normal Yet? through the lens of narrative empathy to explore how fiction can shape perceptions of mental illness. It analyzes the novel’s first-person narration and embodied narration, which may evoke empathy for the protagonist experiencing obsessive-compulsive disorder. These techniques can encourage emotional engagement and foster compassionate attitudes toward mental health challenges. Moreover, such literature may offer validation and solidarity to struggling readers. Ultimately, this research highlights young adult fiction's potential to enhance mental health literacy and act as an empathetic bridge between individual experience and societal understanding.

Aim: This study analyzed the concurrent validity of the Optojump infrared photocell system for estimating lower limb peak power by comparing it with the 15 s Wingate anaerobic test (WAnT) and examining relationships with sprint performance indicators. Methods: Twelve physically active university students (ten males, two females; age: 23.39 ± 1.47 years; body mass: 73.08 ± 9.19 kg; height: 173.67 ± 6.97 cm; BMI: 24.17 ± 1.48 kg·m−2) completed a cross-sectional validation protocol. Participants performed WAnT on a calibrated Monark ergometer (7.5% body weight for males, 5.5% for females), 30 s continuous jump tests using the Optojump system (Microgate, Italy), and 30 m sprint assessments with 10 m and 20 m split times. Peak power was expressed in absolute (W), relative (W·kg−1), and allometric (W·kg−0.67) terms. Results: Thirty-second continuous jump testing produced systematically higher peak power values across all metrics (p < 0.001). Mean differences indicated large effect sizes: relative power (Cohen’s d = 0.99; 18.263 ± 4.243 vs. 10.99 ± 1.58 W·kg−1), absolute power (d = 0.86; 1381.71 ± 393.44 vs. 807.28 ± 175.45 W), and allometric power (d = 0.79). Strong correlations emerged between protocols, with absolute power showing the strongest association (r = 0.842, p < 0.001). Linear regression analysis revealed that 30 s continuous jump-derived measurements explained 71% of the variance in Wingate outcomes (R2 = 0.710, p < 0.001). Sprint performance showed equivalent predictive capacity for both tests (Wingate: R2 = 0.66; 30 s continuous jump: R2 = 0.67). Conclusions: The Optojump infrared photocell system provides a valid and practical alternative to laboratory-based ergometry for assessing lower limb anaerobic power. While it systematically overestimates absolute values compared with the Wingate anaerobic test, its strong concurrent validity (r > 0.80), large effect sizes, and equivalent predictive ability for sprint performance (R2 = 0.66–0.71) confirm its reliability as a field-based assessment tool. These findings underscore the importance of sport-specific, weight-bearing assessment technologies in modern sports biomechanics, providing coaches, practitioners, and clinicians with a feasible method for monitoring performance, talent identification, and training optimization. The results further suggest that Optojump-based protocols can bridge the gap between laboratory precision and ecological validity, supporting both athletic performance enhancement and injury prevention strategies.

Background: Healthcare professionals are known to make intensive use of the internet to improve their health literacy, preserve their psychological resilience, resolve uncertainties, and lessen their fear of COVID-19. Although several studies have addressed these concepts, we encountered none examining their relationships with one another. Objective: This research set out to determine the effects of health literacy, psychological resilience, and internet addiction levels on the fear of COVID-19 in healthcare professionals. Methods: The sample in this descriptive, cross-sectional, and correlation-seeking research consisted of 456 health workers. The data were collected using an information form and the Health Literacy Scale (HLS), the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS), Young's Internet Addiction Test-Short Form (YIAT-SF), and the Fear of COVID-19 Scale. Results: The mean age of the health professionals enrolled in the research was 40.80 ± 11.39 years (min 22, max 68), 52.4% were women, 87.1% held bachelor's degrees, 86.8% were married, and 5.9% were working as nurses. The participants’ mean scale scores were 54.97 ± 5.62 for the HLS, 26.95 ± 9.57 for YIAT-SF, 20.57 ± 3.62 for the BRS, and 20.33 ± 2.97 for the Fear of COVID-19 Scale. Conclusions: The healthcare professionals in this study exhibited adequate levels of health literacy and psychological resilience, a moderate level of internet addiction, and still experienced fear of COVID-19. Health literacy, internet addiction, and psychological well-being emerged as important factors in the fear of COVID-19.

Arslan, Kübra; Hatipoğlu, Ertuğrul
A multidimensional scale to measure family resilience, which focuses on facilitating positive adaptation and strengthening the family unit when affected by high-stressful events, does not exist in Turkish. The aim of this study was to adapt the Family Resilience Scale into Turkish and to conduct a validity and reliability study. The Family Resilience Scale was translated into Turkish and back-translated. Simple random sampling was used to create a representative sample of adults from 321 families selected in Turkey in 2022. The reliability of the scale as a whole and of the subscales was examined using Cronbach’s alpha. Test-retest reliability, the scale was administered to 30 individuals two weeks apart to determine reliability using the test-retest method. Cronbach alpha coefficients were greater than 0.70 for all scales. The test-retest reliability for the General Family Resilience Scale score was found to be.725. According to the results of the confirmatory factor analysis, chi-square χ2 = 2.598; RMSEA= 0.071; SRMR= 0.06; IFI= 0.90; CFI= 0.90; GFI= 0.89; TLI= 0.88. This study provides evidence that the Family Resilience Scale has good validity, reliability and test-retest reliability for Turkish families. Further testing, including construct validity and testing in different contexts, will strengthen the evidence. This scale will find application in resilience research, clinical settings, and facilitate the development and evaluation of intervention programmes to build resilience in Turkish families.

Şen, Müşerref Ebru; Özdemir, Filiz; İnceoğlu, Feyza
Aims: Aging is an inevitable stage in which in addition to physiological and mental changes, perception and awareness decline, and memory functions gradually deteriorate. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of body awareness on fall-related behaviors and fall risk in geriatric individuals. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 176 individuals over 65 years of age who presented to family health centers. Body awareness (BAQ), fall-related behaviors (FaB) and fall risk (Morse) were examined. Statistical significance was accepted as p < 0.05 in the analyzes. Results: There was a moderate, negative, and statistically significant relationship between the Morse and BAQ scores of the participants (r=-0.576) (p < 0.05). There was a moderate, positive, and statistically significant relationship between the BAQ and FaB scores of the participants (r = 0.235) (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The results showed a significant relationship between body awareness levels and fall-related behaviors and fall risk in geriatric individuals.
