Social Capital Measurement in Turkiye: Creating an Index by Province

    Pilatin, Abdulmuttalip; Ayaydin, Hasan

The aim of the study is to create a social capital index on the basis of 81 provinces covering the years between 2007-2018 in Turkiye. While creating the social capital index, the method of creating the social capital index obtained from 2 networks and 2 norm variables, which was also used in previous studies, was applied. While the number of foundations and associations on a provincial basis was used as network variables, the rate of voting in parliamentary elections and the rate of response to WVS surveys were used as norm variables. In order to perform principal component analysis, the collected data was entered into the SPSS 23 package program, and the relevant analysis was performed. For this purpose, principal component analysis was applied for the years 2007, 2011, and 2018, when parliamentary general elections were held, and the first component that emerged was taken as an indicator of social capital index. Since social capital does not change in a short period of time for countries, regions, and cities, the index values for the years between 2007, 2011 and 2018 were created with the linear interpolation method using the data, as applied in similar studies. Positive ones among the index values created on the basis of provinces indicate a high level of social capital, while negative values indicate a low level of social capital. When the social capital index values of 2007 and 2018 are examined, it is observed that the social capital levels of the provinces have increased over the years, although there has not been much change in the index values on a provincial basis over the years.

RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN INVESTMENT INCENTIVES, PUBLIC INVESTMENT EXPENDITURES AND EXPORT: PANEL CAUSALITY ANALYSIS ON PROVINCES IN TURKEY

Recepoglu, Mursit; Doganay, Muharrem Akin; Deger, Mustafa Kemal

The state plays an essential role in the survival of companies under today's global competition conditions. Governments can, directly and indirectly, affect the competitiveness of firms through incentives and public investment expenditures. This study examines the relations between investment incentives, public investment expenditures and exports at the provincial level in Turkey. According to the panel causality analysis findings covering the period 2002-2017, there is a two-way causal relationship between investment incentives and exports. On the other hand, there is a one-way causality from exports to public investment expenditures. These results indicate the importance of the effects of incentives on exports in the short term. However, the absence of the expected export effects of public investments can be attributed to inefficiency in public investments.

EFFECTS OF CORRUPTION ON ECONOMIC GROWTH UNDER MACROECONOMIC INSTABILITIES

    Batu Agirkaya, Melahat; Akyol, Hikmet

This study examined impact of macroeconomic instability and corruption on economic performance in developing countries. For this purpose, longterm relationship between 1995-2019 was examined using Kao (1999) and Pedroni (1999, 2004) cointegration tests. Results, macroeconomic instability and corruption have affected economic performance in long run. Flexibility of long-term relationship between variables was analyzed using PDOLS, FMOLS and DOLSMG estimators. The results showed that macroeconomic instabilities negatively and significantly affect economic growth and FDI, which represent economic performance. As macroeconomic instability increases, economic revival will be negatively affected by this, while foreign capital investment in country will decrease. Consequently, implementation of policies that will reduce macroeconomic instability and uncertainties will increase economic recovery and encourage foreign capital investments in host countries. Impact of corruption on economic growth and FDI was found to be positive. Decreasing corruption in research countries favors economic growth and facilitates foreign investment increases.

Investigating the Influence of Joint Reinforcements of Portland Cement Concrete Slabs Under Asphalt Concrete Overlays on Vertical Deflections Using Accelerated Pavement Testing

Seferoglu, Mehmet Tevfik; Seferoglu, Aysegul Gunes; Çelik, Muhammet; Akpinar, Muhammet Vefa

Joint gaps between slabs in underlying Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements are critical factors in the life span of asphalt concrete (AC) overlays. Therefore, being informed about the vertical deflections that may occur around the joints is important. In this study the joints were reinforced with three different materials: ethylene propylene diene monomer (i.e., rubber joint filler [RJF] reinforcement), bitumen-based sealant (i.e., rubber plate [RP] reinforcement), and steel plate (SP) (i.e., SP reinforcement), to limit the vertical movement of the underlying PCC. Tests were conducted at the accelerated pavement testing facility for two different AC overlay thicknesses, 50 mm and 100 mm, during 100,000 passages to investigate the influence of AC overlay thickness variations on slab vertical deflections and to also evaluate types of joint reinforcement on slab vertical deflections. For 50-mm thick AC overlay, the most effective joint reinforcements to prevent deformations caused by loading were RP, RJF, and SP; for a 100-mm thickness, this was determined to be RJF, SP, and RP, respectively.

From Cadomian back-arc basin to Rheic Ocean closure: the geochronological records of the Kurtoglu Massif, eastern Sakarya Zone, Turkey

Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Gücer, Mehmet Ali; Karsli, Orhan; Yi, Keewook

New U-Pb zircon data from the Kurtoglu Massif (eastern Sakarya Zone, Turkey) reveal a Cadomian back-arc basin, evolving to closure of the Rheic Ocean. A host metapsammite from the lower tectonic slice of the massif yielded detrital zircon ages ranging from Neoarchean (2.73 Ga) to late Neoproterozoic with a major population between 610 and 553 Ma and a peak at 592 Ma, implying that the basement of the Sakarya Zone has a Cadomian affinity. This metasedimentary sequence was intruded by an orthogneiss in the early Ordovician (481 Ma) probably during the opening of the Rheic Ocean. Zircon grains from the overlying metasedimentary sample yielded concordant ages spreading throughout the Mesoproterozoic (1608-1032 Ma) and early Paleozoic (516-351 Ma), suggesting that they were deposited in the Rheic Ocean likely prior to its final closure. The muscovite metagranite, emplaced into the host rocks of the Kurtoglu Massif at 388 Ma, formed probably during northward closure of the Rheic Ocean. Zircon grains of a metasiltstone from the upper tectonic slice of the massif, represented mainly by phyllites, yielded similar age spectra to that of the host metapsammite of the lower tectonic slice. Such phyllites in the Pulur Massif similar to 35 km to the southeast display a close association with the ophiolitic complexes of the Rheic Ocean. This relationship together with the age spectra mentioned above suggests that sedimentation was on a place away from the Paleozoic igneous sources, in an analogous position to the southern passive margin of the Rheic Ocean.

Evaluation of potential rock falls with three-dimensional analysis: Example of Oltanbey and Hasanbey districts (Gümüşhane city center)

Alemdağ, Selçuk; Kara, Rasim Taylan; Bostanci, Hasan Tahsin

The central district campus of Gümüşhane, located on the Trabzon-Erzurum Highway, has a steep topography, and because of the effect of climatic and morphological structure, frequent rockfall events can cause loss of life and property from time to time. For these reasons, the slopes in some parts of the Oltanbey and Hasanbey districts of the central district of Gümüşhane, which pose a great threat in terms of rockfall potential, were chosen as the study area. In this study, three-dimensional rockfall analyzes were carried out using the RocPro3D program on the lines determined in the rockfall source zones with a high probability of rockfall. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the rock blocks rolled from the O1, O2 and H1 source rock lines determined at the upper elevations of the study area threaten the settlements and road networks in Oltanbey and Hasanbey districts. With the 3D rockfall analysis, steel barrier was applied as a precautionary structure in the areas determined to be under the risk of rockfall, and the analyzes were carried out again considering the precautionary structures. By examining the results of the analyzes, the safest and most economical different barrier types have been proposed to eliminate the danger of rockfall.

Aysu, Şühedanur; Akıl, Fatoş; Çevik, Edanur; Kılıç, Mustafa Emin; İlyasoğlu, Huri

A homemade hazelnut milk-based beverage was prepared from hazelnut milk with raisins. The proximate composition, physicochemical and sensorial properties, total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activity, and fatty acid compositions of the beverage samples were determined. The properties of the three different preparations of homemade hazelnut milk with raisins (1%, 3%, and 5%) were compared with the control sample without raisins. The main macronutrient was fat (6.3‒7.3%) in the hazelnut milk beverage followed by carbohydrate (3‒3.5%) and protein (2.2‒2.5%). The addition of raisins to the beverage formulation increased the flavor and general acceptability scores. It also improved the TPC and antioxidant capacity. The TPC of the developed beverage samples ranged from 65 to 97 mg/L. The fatty acid composition was rich in monounsaturated fatty acids as mainly oleic acid (>80%). The hazelnut milk beverage may have potential as a functional beverage in a daily diet to provide nutrients and energy.

Eocene magmatism and associated Fe-Cu mineralization in northeastern Turkey: a case study of the Karadağ skarn

Sipahi, Ferkan; Saydam Eker, Çiğdem; Akpınar, İbrahim; Gücer, Mehmet Ali; Vural, Alaaddin; Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Aydurmuş, Tanju

The metallogenic belt containing numerous skarn mineralized systems starting from Eastern Europe continues through Turkey and Iran. The study area in the Eastern Pontides is within this metallogenic belt. The 44.39 ± 0.53 Ma Karadağ Intrusion sourced skarn mineralization is located along the granitoid-to-limestone contact. The Karadağ Intrusion is an arc-like pluton with medium–high K calc-alkaline and peraluminous–metaluminous affinity. The Karadağ Fe–Cu skarn mineralization (Gümüşhane, Turkey), an exoskarn, is hosted by Late Cretaceous limestone and consists of early garnet, clinopyroxene, and orthoclase with late epidote and chlorite. Primary ore minerals are magnetite and haematite, accompanied by minor amounts of chalcopyrite and pyrite. Pyroxene comprises mostly diopside and less hedenbergitic diopside and johannsenite. Wollastonite is very rare. Garnet is andradite and grossular–andradite. Thus, all these results imply that the Karadağ Fe–Cu skarn mineralization formed under relatively oxidized and Fe-rich conditions. The homogenization temperatures of the fluid inclusions vary from 189°C to 405°C for quartz and 186°C to 430°C for calcite. The salinity contents in the fluid inclusions are within 0.2–9 wt% NaCl equivalent for quartz and 0.4–14.8 wt% NaCl equivalent for calcite. First melting temperatures between −36.5 and −47.4°C were attained with the presence of NaCl–FeCl2± CaCl2 in the initial phase of fluid inclusions. The first melting in the later stage of fluid inclusions is between −3.8 and −17.2°C, thereby, supporting the existence of NaHCO3-Na2CO3-KCl-type salt composition. The δ18O values of minerals are 1.7–10.3‰ for garnet, 11.1–14.6‰ for quartz, 6.4 to 6.8‰ for epidote, and 2.8–3.8‰ for magnetite in the Karadağ skarn mineralization. The δ18O value of epidote indicates magmatic fluid, whereas those of garnet, magnetite, and quartz suggest magmatic fluids together with less meteoric effect. The δ18O values in limestone (18.7 to 22.3‰), marble (8.7‰), and calcite (10.5 to 12.2‰) were depleted relative to typical δ18O contents of marine carbonates (20 to 30‰). Moreover, the C isotope values of calcite (−5.4 to −1.4‰), marble (−2.1‰), and limestone (1.0 to 1.2‰) reflect those of metamorphic rocks and skarns (−4.0 to 3‰ and −18 to 2‰). Mineral paragenesis, fluid inclusion, and stable isotopic signatures are consistent with ore mineralization caused by the interaction of magmatic fluids with carbonate host rocks. Karadağ Fe-Cu skarn mineralization, associated with Karadağ postcollisional magmatism, is an example of skarn mineralized system in the Eastern Pontides.

The effect of topically administered lavender aromatherapy on the pain of insulin injection in diabetic patients: a double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial

Demirağ, Hatice; Hintistan, Sevilay; Bulut, Enes

Background/aim: Needle phobia occurs in more than half of diabetic patients due to the pain caused by frequent insulin injections. Therefore, this study evaluated the effect of topically administered lavender aromatherapy on the pain of insulin injections in diabetic patients. Materials and methods: In this double-blind randomized controlled and experimental study, patients who met the study criteria were divided into three groups; topical lavender oil (n = 60), placebo (n = 60), and control (n = 60) groups. The data were collected using the “Patient Information Form”, the “Follow-up Form”, the “Verbal Category Scale (VCS)”, and the “Visual Analogue Scale (VAS)”. Results: The results revealed no significant difference between the patients in the topical lavender oil group before and during the insulin injection in terms of VAS and VCS pain scores (p > 0.05). In the placebo and control groups, the mean VAS and VCS pain scores during insulin injection were found to be significantly higher than before insulin injection (p < 0.05). Besides, the mean VAS and VCS scores during insulin injection were significantly higher in the placebo and control groups than the topical lavender oil group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The study showed that patients who were administered topical lavender oil felt less pain after insulin injection than those in the placebo and control groups. Therefore, topically applied lavender aromatherapy can be easily used for pain control in insulin-dependent diabetic patients (clinical trial number NCT04767737).

COVID-19 diagnosis with deep learning; [Diagnóstico de COVID-19 con Deep Learning]

    Reis, Hatice Catal

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is fatal and spreading rapidly. Early detection and diagnosis of the COVID-19 infection will prevent rapid spread. This study aims to automatically detect COVID-19 through a chest computed tomography (CT) dataset. The standard models for automatic COVID-19 detection using raw chest CT images are presented. This study uses convolutional neural network (CNN), Zeiler and Fergus network (ZFNet), and dense convolutional network-121 (DenseNet121) architectures of deep convolutional neural network models. The proposed models are presented to provide accurate diagnosis for binary classification. The datasets were obtained from a public database. This retrospective study included 757 chest CT images (360 confirmed COVID-19 and 397 non-COVID-19 chest CT images). The algorithms were coded using the Python programming language. The performance metrics used were accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and ROC-AUC. Comparative analyses are presented between the three models by considering hyper-parameter factors to find the best model. We obtained the best performance, with an accuracy of 94,7%, a recall of 90%, a precision of 100%, and an F1-score of 94,7% from the CNN model. As a result, the CNN algorithm is more accurate and precise than the ZFNet and DenseNet121 models. This study can present a second point of view to medical staff.

Evaluation of single particle drying characteristics using drying models and curve fitting

Celen, Pinar; Erdem, Hasan H; Pusat, Saban

In this study, Turkish lignite dried with hot air and superheated steam was experimentally investigated. Drying experiments were carried out at 120°C drying temperature and atmospheric pressure. Mass, center and surface temperature changes of lignite having a diameter of 30 mm were continuously measured. Hot air and superheated steam drying methods were compared, and it was found that, because of condensation in the initial stage of superheated steam, the moisture content of the lignite sample temporarily increased. On the contrary, the moisture content of the lignite sample dramatically reduced on drying with hot air. Six different thin-layer models describing the drying kinetics of lignite were fitted to the experimental data, with the Pusat model giving the best predictions with superheated steam drying and the Midilli model giving the best predictions with hot air drying of a single particle.

Tectonic and structural characteristics of Erzurum and its surroundings (Eastern Turkey): a detailed comparison between different geophysical parameters

Özer, Çağlar; Öztürk, Serkan; Pamuk, Eren

The tectonic and structural properties of Erzurum and its surroundings have been investigated by evaluating the seismo-tectonic b-value, magnetic anomaly, edge detection analysis (total horizontal derivative (THDR) and tilt angle (TA)), Curie Point Depth (CPD), P-wave velocity (Vp), and Vp / Vs (S-wave velocity) ratio and by imaging the regional distributions of these parameters. For this purpose, all parameters have been combined to be able to reveal the new useful results on the study region and are presented for different locations and depths. The Vp values have been accompanied by high Vp / Vs ratios and shallow CPD values in the areas with geothermal regions such as Tekman, Söylemez, and the northern part of Karlıova. In the tectonically active regions such as Ilıca, Dumlu, Pasinler, Çat, Karlıova and Karaçoban, high reduction-to – the-pole (RTP) total magnetic anomaly was accompanied by low Vp values in harmony. Besides, the low Vp values between 0 and 10 km and high b-values can be related to the weakness zones and the areas in which earthquake hazards are high in the study area. The low Vp values in the 0 km horizontal slice are in accordance with the high RTP total magnetic anomaly values in the triangle area between Aşkale, Ilıca-Dumlu-Pasinler, Narman, and Karaçoban. Uniformly, high Vp and low RTP total magnetic anomaly inclusions overlap in Çat and Tekman. In some regions such as Dumlu, Narman, Horasan, Karaçoban and south of Karlıova, the tilt angle values are positive (positive values in the tilt angle map correspond to the center of the structure causing the magnetic anomaly) and the Vp values are low, but there is not a complete harmony between these parameters. These results show that variations on these parameters are related to each other, and these types of geophysical data are required for tectonic and structural features at different locations and depth levels.

GIS-based determination of potential instabilities and source rock areas on the Torul-Kürtün (Gümüşhane) motorway, rockfall, and protection structure analyses

Alemdag, Selcuk; Bostanci, Hasan Tahsin; Gacener, Elif

The Torul-Kürtün-Tirebolu motorway, one of the alternative routes for access between the Eastern Anatolia Region and the Black Sea Region, has an important traffic potential in this respect. However, rockfall events that occur frequently in almost every season especially in the part of the route between Torul and Kürtün may occasionally cause loss of life and property and lead to disruption in transportation in a much more common way. Departing from this point, the parts of the motorway that pose a greater threat in terms of slope instability and rockfall potential were selected as the study area. Instability maps produced by the kinematic analysis results showed that the probability of toppling type failure in the study area was quite higher, while the general results were as follows: the probability of toppling type failure was found in 204 different locations and approximately 97,900 m2 of area. Taking account of geographic information system (GIS)–based final instability maps, profile lines were determined for potential rockfalls in the instability-intense source rock areas. The profile lines which were determined were analyzed two-dimensionally in the RocFall 7.0 computer program. The rockfall analyses revealed that the rolling rock blocks in the section SP7 shall remain on the surface of the slope, while the rock blocks in other sections shall reach the road route. The application of barrier types determined by barrier sensitivity analysis on profile lines will minimize or completely prevent potential hazards.

Performance comparison of deep learning and machine learning methods in determining wetland water areas using EuroSAT dataset

    Günen, Mehmet Akif

Wetlands are critical to the ecology because they maintain biodiversity and provide home for a variety of species. Researching, mapping, and conservation of wetlands is a challenging and time-consuming process. Because they produce temporal and geographical information, remote sensing and photogrammetric approaches are useful tools for analyzing and managing wetlands. In this study, the water areas of five different wetlands obtained with Sentinel-2 images in Turkey were classified. Although obtaining large amounts of high-dimensional dataset labeled for various land types is costly, it is a significant advantage to use it after model training in a wide range of applications. In this paper, the EuroSAT dataset was used in the validation process. Proposed deep learning–based 1D convolutional neural networks (CNN) and traditional machine learning methods (i.e., support vector machine, linear discriminant analysis, K-nearest neighborhood, canonical correlation forests, and AdaBoost.M1) were compared quantitatively (i.e., accuracy, recall, precision, specificity, F-score, and image quality assessment metrics) and qualitatively. Finally, pairwise comparison was made with chi-square-based McNemar’s test. There is a statistical difference between 1D CNN and machine learning method (except the support vector machine vs linear discriminant analysis in Test 1 area). CNN models outperform machine learning algorithms in terms of non-linear function approximation and the ability to extract and articulate data features. Since 1D CNNs can process data in a highly complex and unique feature space, they are very successful in segmenting strongly related and highly correlated discrete signals. It also has advantages over machine learning methods for water body extraction in that it can be integrated with sophisticated image pre-processing and standardization tools, is less susceptible to low-level random noise, and provides shift in variations and contrast-invariant image local transforms.

Assessment of Rapid Urbanization Effects with Remote Sensing Techniques

Yagmur, Nur; Dervisoglu, Adalet; Bilgilioglu, B. Baha; Ahmed, M.B.; Boudhir, A.A.; Kara, I.R.; Jain, V.; Mellouli, S.

Istanbul is the most populous city in Turkey. The population, which was approximately 5.5 million in 1985, has reached 15.5 million in 2020. Population growth is the most important factor behind human activities that put pressure on the environment. An increasing population means depletion of limited resources, increasing environmental problems, and rapid urbanization. In parallel with the increase in population and urbanization, there has also been an increase in demand for housing, leading to new residential areas in almost every district of Istanbul. This study examined the transformation from vegetation areas to residential areas between 1985 and 2020 in a selected region in Buyukcekmece, one of the 39 districts of Istanbul. The relationship between land use and land cover (LULC) change in the area and Land Surface Temperature (LST) change caused by urbanization was analyzed. It is seen that the built-up area has increased from 57.1 ha to 781.4 ha in 35 years. In every five years, an increase in surface temperatures was determined in parallel with increasing urbanization, and this increase was determined as about 5.4℃ from 1985 to 2020. Also, when the temperature data of the Buyukcekmece Meteorological station is analyzed, it is seen that there has been an increase of approximately 2 ºC in air temperatures in the last five years. In addition, movements were observed in the stability of structures in rapid urbanization areas after analyzing with the PSI time series InSAR method. The main causes were determined as construction sites around the buildings and geological conditions of the ground, which are triggered by urbanization.

Assessment of Nutritional Status of Elderly Receiving Home Health Care

Meriç, Çağdaş Salih; Yabanci Ayhan, Nurcan; Yilmaz, Hacı Ömer

Background/Purpose: This study was carried out to evaluate the nutritional status of elderly who received home health care. Methods: A total of 120 elderly were included in this cross sectional study. Elderly were visited in their homes and nutritional status of them was evaluated by Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF) scale. In questionnaire; general information about elderly, presence of chronic disease, pressure sores, anthropometric measurement, nutritional status of elderly were asked. In addition, current biochemical parameters which were routinely evaluated in elderly were recorded by the researcher. Results: The mean age of elderly (40 males and 80 females) was 81.3±8.3 (65-105) years, and 97.5% of elderly were diagnosed with at least one disease. According to the MNA-SF score, 60.8% of elderly were classified as malnourished, 34.2% at risk for malnutrition and 5.0% as normal nutritional status. Currently, 49.2% of malnourished elderly have pressure sores and 54.8% had at least once before; these rates were higher than elderly without malnutrition (p <0.001). In addition, total MNA-SF score of elderly is strongly positive with hemoglobin, hematocrit and calf circumference; it was found that there was a strong negative correlation with C-reactive protein (CRP). Conclusion: In this study, it was found that only 5.0% of elderly who received home health care were in good nutritional status and pressure sore was higher in elderly who have risk of malnutrition or malnourished. Nutritional status of elderly receiving home health care should be evaluated by dietitians and more comprehensive scientific studies are needed.
