A systematic and evolutionary analysis of software design pattern detection and recommendation approaches (2015–2025)

    Turk, Salih; Coskuncay, Ahmet

Context: Automated detection and recommendation of software design patterns is crucial for software maintenance, reverse engineering, and architectural quality. Despite decades of research, the field has undergone a significant transformation with the emergence of deep learning and large language models (LLMs), leading to a fragmented landscape of methodologies and evaluation settings. Objective: This study aims to provide a systematic and evolutionary synthesis of design pattern detection and recommendation approaches published between 2015 and 2025, categorizing them into distinct technological paradigms and identifying open research challenges. Method: Following Kitchenham’s evidence-based software engineering guidelines and PRISMA principles, a systematic literature review was conducted. We executed a structured search on the Web of Science database, identifying 212 initial records. After rigorous multi-stage screening and quality assessment, 66 primary studies were selected for final synthesis and analysis. Results: The evolution of the field is characterized through six distinct paradigms: Rule-Based, Graph-Based, Feature-Driven Machine Learning, Representation Learning (Deep Learning), Hybrid, and Contextual Intelligence (LLM). Findings reveal a clear methodological shift from structural exactness to semantic and contextual understanding. However, the analysis also identifies a high concentration on specific datasets (JHotDraw and P-MARt) and a lack of standardized benchmarks for variant detection and multi-modal analysis. Conclusions: While LLM-based approaches show promise in handling pattern variants and semantic context, the field requires more diverse benchmarks and explainable models. This review provides a comprehensive research roadmap, emphasizing the need for multi-modal frameworks and industry-scale validation to bridge the gap between academic research and practical software engineering.

Ucuncu, Osman; Kul, Merve Kalafat; Baltaci, Cemalettin; Aykoc, Ayse Muslu

This study analyzed the physicochemical characteristics, mineral composition, and antioxidant potential of fifteen floral honey samples collected from five districts of Gümüşhane, Türkiye. The average values for moisture (17.44 g/100 g), insoluble solids (0.04 g/100 g), conductivity (0.35 mS/cm), diastase activity (54.15 DN), free acidity (38.18 meq/kg), and fructose + glucose content (68.95 g/100 g) were mostly within the acceptable limits defined by national honey standards. Proline content ranged from 562.66 to 1466.15 mg/kg, while hydroxymethylfurfural (0.37–18.89 mg/kg) confirmed the freshness of all samples. Potassium, calcium, sodium, and magnesium were identified as the major mineral elements in the analyzed honey samples, with considerable variation observed among samples collected from different districts. Antioxidant activity (Total phenolic content (mg GAE/100 g): 9.21–98.25; SC₅₀ (mg/mL): 5.23–41.29) revealed a strong antioxidant potential of Gümüşhane honeys. This work provides the first detailed characterization of Gümüşhane honeys, confirming their high physicochemical quality, rich mineral profile, and notable antioxidant potential, and underscores their value as a distinctive regional product with functional and commercial significance.

Effects of inspiratory muscle training combined with circadian rhythm-based running programs in male children football players

Konca, Erkan; Yilmaz, Coşkun; Saç, Ajlan; Dal, Suzan; Halmatov, Medera; Akıllıoğlu, Osman; Bayrakdaroğlu, Serdar

Background: Inspiratory muscle training (IMT) has been suggested to improve respiratory function and physical performance; however, evidence in preadolescent athletes remains limited. This study examined whether adding IMT to circadian rhythm–based running programs would enhance functional and pulmonary outcomes in preadolescent male football players with at least two years of regular football training experience. Methods: Seventy-five boys aged 10–12 years were categorized into morning-, intermediate-, or evening-type groups based on Morningness–Eveningness Scale for Children (MESC) scores, and each chronotype group was assigned to its corresponding running protocol with or without IMT. Over six weeks, participants completed circadian rhythm–based running sessions, and IMT groups performed graded-load IMT. Pre- and post-intervention assessments included agility, six-minute walk test (6MWT), pulmonary function (FVC, FEV₁, FEV₁/FVC), and respiratory muscle strength (MIP, MEP). Results: Agility and 6MWT performance improved most in the morning running + IMT group compared with evening running + IMT and running-only groups (p < 0.001). FVC and FEV₁ increased in both IMT groups, though gains were modest and smaller in the running-only group. Improvements in MIP and MEP did not differ significantly between groups. Conclusion: Combining IMT with morning running produced the greatest improvements in agility and functional performance, while pulmonary gains were moderate and respiratory muscle strength changes were comparable across groups. IMT may provide additional benefit when integrated into chronotype-aligned morning training in preadolescent football players. Tectonic evolution of the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex: Insights from using magnetic and gravity data

    Aktaş, Gülten

This study investigates the inherited crustal architecture and concealed tectonic boundaries of the Kırşehir Massif, a key component of the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex (CACC), using satellite-derived potential field datasets. Earth Magnetic Anomaly Grid 2 (EMAG2) magnetic anomalies and World Gravity Map 2012 (WGM2012) Bouguer gravity data were analyzed together with multiple edge-detection filters, including Total Horizontal Gradient (THG), Tilt Angle (TA), Theta Map (TM), and Tilt Angle of Horizontal Derivative Amplitude (TAHG), to enhance structural boundaries and identify subsurface discontinuities prior to geological interpretation. The enhanced magnetic and gravity fields reveal two principal lineament sets trending NW-SE and NE-SW, which coincide with major lithological contacts, fault zones, and the boundaries of the İzmir-Ankara-Erzincan Suture Zone (IAESZ) and Inner Tauride Suture Zone (ITSZ). Quantitative lineament classification based on azimuth and length statistics further confirms three dominant structural orientations (NW-SE, NE-SW, and E-W), reflecting both inherited suture-related structures and younger transtensional deformation. By integrating filtered anomaly gradients with regional geological constraints, this study provides the most detailed potential-field-based structural model of the Kırşehir Block to date and offers new insights into crustal inheritance, lithospheric segmentation, and the multi-phase tectonic evolution of Central Anatolia.

Physiological responses and adaptive mechanisms of amphibians and reptiles to multiple interacting environmental stressors: an integrative review

    Kurnaz, Muammer

This integrative review synthesizes current knowledge on the physiological responses and adaptive mechanisms of amphibians and reptiles to multiple interacting environmental stressors, with particular emphasis on synergistic effects among temperature, hydric stress, disease, and pollution. Given the stronger empirical basis for amphibians in the existing literature, amphibian responses are covered in greater depth, while reptile-specific physiology, immunology, and emerging infectious diseases are explicitly addressed in dedicated sections throughout the review. Critical thermal tolerance analyses reveal that approximately 7.5% of amphibian species will exceed their physiological limits under a 4 °C warming scenario, with tropical lowland species already operating near their CTmax thresholds. Thermal plasticity is limited, with acclimation responses averaging only 0.13 °C increase in CTmax per 1 °C environmental warming—insufficient to track rapid climate change. Water balance regulation shows dramatic interspecific variation, with cutaneous resistance ranging from 0.05 s/cm in aquatic amphibians to >1000 s/cm in desert-adapted reptiles. Synergistic interactions between thermal and hydric stress significantly amplify vulnerability, particularly in dehydration scenarios that reduce critical thermal limits. Chemical pollutants, including heavy metals and pesticides, cause developmental abnormalities (535% increase in malformation frequency), immunosuppression, and endocrine disruption across multiple life stages. Emerging infectious diseases, particularly chytridiomycosis (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis and B. salamandrivorans) and ranaviruses, drive mass mortality events globally, with co-infections exacerbating population declines. Climate change intensifies disease susceptibility through stress-mediated immunosuppression and altered pathogen dynamics. Adaptive capacity varies markedly among species. While amphibians exhibit strong phenological responses (2-4× greater than other taxa), genetic adaptation potential remains limited by narrow dispersal abilities and habitat fragmentation. Microhabitat buffering can reduce thermal extremes by several degrees but depends critically on habitat structural integrity. This review demonstrates that the pace of anthropogenic change challenges the adaptive capacity of most species, necessitating integrated conservation strategies including microhabitat preservation, climate corridor establishment, pollution mitigation, disease surveillance, and ex-situ conservation programs.

Waste to resource approach: CoFe2O4-modified spent tea waste for magnetic solid-phase extraction of toxic metal ions from water samples

Seker, Serdal; Ozdes, Duygu; Duran, Celal

In this research, within the framework of a waste-to-resource conversion approach, biochar obtained from spent tea waste (STWB), a widely available and cost-free biomass source, was modified with magnetic CoFe2O4 nanoparticles to develop an environmentally friendly adsorbent (CoFe2O4/STWB). The applicability of this material for efficient separation and preconcentration of Cd(ii), Pb(ii), and Ni(ii) ions from mining wastewater, stream water, and wastewater samples collected from an organized industrial zone was systematically investigated using the solid phase extraction (SPE) method. Optimization of the experimental variables was conducted to enhance the extraction performance of the target analyte ions. The fact that the adsorption and desorption equilibrium times occur in less than 1 min demonstrates the rapid and highly efficient extraction performance of the developed adsorbent. Langmuir isotherm model analysis revealed that CoFe2O4/STWB exhibits adsorption capacities of 69.4 mg g−1 for Cd(ii), 185.2 mg g−1 for Pb(ii), and 45.2 mg g−1 for Ni(ii). In contrast, the corresponding adsorption capacities obtained for unmodified STWB were considerably lower, with values of 42.9, 75.8, and 16.8 mg g−1 for Cd(ii), Pb(ii), and Ni(ii), respectively. These results clearly demonstrate that modification with CoFe2O4 significantly enhances the adsorption performance of STWB. Consequently, CoFe2O4-modified spent tea waste can be regarded as an effective, economical, and sustainable adsorbent for trace heavy metal analysis in environmental water samples, owing to its rapid extraction kinetics, high adsorption capacity, and low detection limits. Analysis of the Changes in River Water Quality and Quantity with Innovative Trend Methods

Şan, Murat; Nacar, Sinan; Bayram, Adem; Kankal, Murat

This study aims to investigate trends and changes in water quality (WQ) and quantity parameters under low-medium-high groups and seasonal trends employing innovative methods. The data were collected from three monitoring stations in the Broad River Basin (USA). The data spanning the years 1987–2020, on water temperature (WT), dissolved oxygen (DO), discharge (Q), and electrical conductivity (EC) parameters, were used for analysis. A combination of innovative trend analysis with binary segmentation (ITABS) was proposed for objective group separation for the purpose of group trend analysis, allowing for the capture of changes in both location and shape parameters. Recently proposed innovative polygon trend Wilcoxon significance test (IPTWST) and innovative polygon trend analysis (IPTA) were also used to examine seasonal trends for the first time, providing a graphical and qualitative analysis of seasonal behavior. The seasonal Mann-Kendall test was also used to compare them. The ITABS method grouped WQ parameters into more than one group, except for the DO parameter. Especially from EC and Q parameters, it is concluded that the trends in groups do not always contribute to the overall trend or at the same rate. Group trends, therefore, should not be ignored for water resources management. According to IPTA and IPTWST, although there is no clear trend in certain seasons, it is evident that seasonal trends exist, and the Q and EC parameters have a more complex structure. The IPTWST method has the advantage of being able to graphically show the inter-seasonal behavior, although it is identical to the seasonal Mann-Kendall method.

Privacy, Fairness, and Model Risk Governance in Sustainable People Analytics

    Şimşek, Tuğçe; Şimşek, Ahmet Bahadır

Whilst sustainability targets are driving organisations to make more intensive use of human data, this trend is transforming HR analytics from a reporting tool into a component of decision-making architecture. This transformation is expanding the scope of data collection, increasing the visibility of employees, and intertwining privacy, fairness, perceptions of surveillance, and model risk within the same process. This study addresses the question of how this interplay can be managed at the project level. A literature review has been combined with an analysis of publicly available corporate documents, from which a compact toolkit for sustainable HR analytics has been derived. The toolkit is structured around defining project boundaries, documenting data and model assumptions, matching risks with controls, and ensuring transparency and human oversight. In this way, the chapter provides a practical framework that ensures analytical capacity is considered alongside organisational legitimacy and employee trust.

GEOLOGY AND MINERAL CHEMISTRY OF THE ARSLANDEDE PLUTON IN THE EASTERN PONTIDES

    Güloğlu, Zikrullah Samet; Kaygusuz, Abdullah

The Middle Eocene Arslandede Pluton, exposed in the Bayburt region on the southern margin of the Eastern Pontides (NE Turkey), has been investigated in terms of its geology and mineral chemistry. The pluton exhibits a NW-SE elongation and covers an area of approximately 7 km². It comprises a broad compositional spectrum ranging from monzodiorite to quartz monzonite. Major rock-forming minerals include plagioclase (An25-48), orthoclase (Or69-88), quartz, amphibole (Mg# = 0.63-0.73), biotite (Mg# = 0.52-0.62), pyroxene (Mg# = 0.70-0.75), and Fe-Ti oxides. Crystallization conditions, estimated via amphibole-plagioclase thermometry and Al-in-hornblende barometry, suggest crystallization temperatures of 737-812 °C and pressures of 0.09-1.61 kbar, corresponding to depths of 0.3-6.0 km. These results indicate that the pluton was emplaced at shallow crustal levels and subsequently solidified under low-pressure conditions. Comparison with other Middle Eocene plutons in the region reveals similar crystallization conditions, suggesting a common tectonic setting during the post-collisional extensional regime in the Eastern Pontides.

Refinement of field-measured velocity profiles via CFD comparison: A case study on single-phase flow in aeration tanks

Yilmaz Çelik, Damla; Vaheddoost, Babak; Aras, Egemen; Şibil, Rahim

The accuracy of field measurements obtained from aeration tanks is of critically important for the validation of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models. In many cases, the employed validation metrics serve as a fundamental keystone for evaluating both the credibility of experimental data and the accuracy of numerical simulations. In this study, a novel data refinement approach is developed to assess the physical plausibility of velocity measurements collected from a full-scale aeration tank. Unlike conventional validation approaches, the CFD model is utilized as a reference framework within a reverse-approach perspective to evaluate the reliability of field data. Measurement points affected by acoustic noise, surface sludge interference, and turbulence near static structures were identified and excluded through curve-fitting and statistical filtering techniques. Velocity data obtained with the help of an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) across six lateral and 53 vertical layers were evaluated using the Coefficient of Determination (R2), Relative Error (RE), and Performance Index (PI) metrics. The maximum-elimination combined with polynomial fitting notably enhanced the model accuracy, reducing RE from −123 % to 20 %, increasing R2from 0.054 to 0.96, and improving PI from 2.6 to 1.16. As a result, the refined dataset provided a more consistent and realistic representation of the flow structure and established a robust observational basis for the future calibration.

A Personalized Target Placement Optimization Framework for VR-Based Upper Extremity Rehabilitation

Türe, Hayati; Kalfa, Eren; Aslan, Muhammed Emin; Işık, Buket Özdemir; Topçu, Osman; Özdemir, Erhan; Sarıhan, Köksal

Featured Application: The proposed framework can be directly integrated into existing VR rehabilitation platforms to provide real-time personalized target placement for post-stroke upper extremity therapy, requiring no additional hardware beyond a standard CPU. Virtual reality (VR)-based rehabilitation is an established modality for upper extremity motor recovery; however, existing systems frequently rely on fixed, random, or therapist-tuned target placement that disregards patient-specific motor capacity and population-level priors. This study proposes a cross-patient collaborative swarm intelligence framework that derives zone-based patient profiles from real VR trajectories and augments them with a similarity-weighted cohort prior distilled from clinically similar patients’ successful trajectory clouds and zone-transition graphs. A hybrid Ant Colony Optimization (ACO)–Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm optimizes 12 targets per session across a 27-zone ( (Formula presented.) ) workspace using a five-component fitness function encompassing reachability, zone balance, movement efficiency, heatmap-guided challenge coverage, and swarm-flow consistency. The framework was evaluated retrospectively on a single-center cohort of 36 post-stroke patients and 6373 sessions under a leakage-safe simulation protocol with 70/30 chronological splits; outcomes are model-based proxy success rates derived from each patient’s profile rather than directly observed task success. The hybrid strategy achieved a mean simulated success rate of 85.5% ± 5.5%, a 36.4% relative improvement over random placement (Wilcoxon (Formula presented.), Cohen’s (Formula presented.) ); the leakage-safe split yielded 80.1% on the held-out segment versus 61.1% for random, with no statistically significant train–test gap ( (Formula presented.) ). Ablation confirmed both PSO and ACO are individually necessary ( (Formula presented.) pp, (Formula presented.) ). Total session-start computation is 78 ms on standard CPU hardware. These findings constitute a proof-of-concept that collaborative personalized swarm optimization can substantially outperform heuristic target placement under in silico evaluation; clinical efficacy in terms of standardized motor outcome measures remains to be established in a prospective randomized controlled trial, and the findings should be replicated across centers, task modes, and a larger cohort before generalization.

Adherence to the MIND Diet and Its Effect on Glycemic Parameters in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Cross-Sectional Study; [Tip 2 Diyabetlilerde MIND Diyetine Uyumun Glisemik Parametreler Üzerindeki Etkisi: Kesitsel Bir Çalışma]

Koçyiğit, Emine; Koçak, Tevfik; Özbek, Yağmur Demirel

Aim: This study aimed to assess the relationship between Mediterranean-Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet score and indicators of glucose control and lipid metabolism in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 459 patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus aged 20-64 years. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus completed a general information form and anthropometric measures. The MIND diet scores obtained from the MIND diet components form. The biochemical parameters gathered from individuals over the last three months were documented. Results: The mean age and body mass index in the study population were 49.10±10.10 years and 30.62±5.48 kg/m2. Overall, the mean MIND diet score was 8.64±1.75, and 47.10% had high adherence to the MIND diet. A significant difference was found between HbA1c and fasting plasma glucose (FBG) in the MIND groups, as well as a substantial negative association identified among HbA1c, FBG, and MIND scores. Conclusions: This study emphasized the significant incidence of overweight and obesity among Turkish adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Higher adherence to the MIND diet is associated with better glycemic control. Higher MIND diet scores associated with reduced HbA1c and FBG levels. However, no significant associations with the parameters of lipid metabolism were found. By emphasizing nutrient-dense foods and supporting both metabolic and psychological health, the MIND diet may represent a valuable adjunct to conventional diabetes management. Keywords.

How does social expenditure affect the fiscal balance in European Union countries?

Sentürk, Suat Hayri; Karakurt, Birol; Keyifli Sentürk, Nazli

This study examines the relationship between social expenditures and fiscal balance in 27 European Union member states over the period 2000–2022. Using a panel data framework, the analysis focuses on four disaggregated categories of social expenditure: health, education, pensions, and social protection. The study employs the Dumitrescu-Hurlin panel causality test to identify the direction of causality and applies Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimations to address potential endogeneity issues. The results reveal a unidirectional causal relationship running from fiscal balance to social expenditure categories. In addition, the findings indicate that fiscal balance exerts a significant constraining effect on all dimensions of social spending: improvements in fiscal balance (i.e. reduced deficits) are associated with decreases in social expenditures. Demographic factors also play an important role. Population ageing increases spending on pensions, health, and social protection, while a larger young population is associated with higher education expenditures. Institutional quality-measured by the rule of law-and national income positively influence social spending, whereas domestic savings and inflation have negative effects. Unemployment reduces spending on health and education but increases expenditures on social protection. Overall, the results highlight a fundamental policy dilemma: fiscal consolidation pressures may conflict with the need for social protection, particularly in the context of ageing European populations. By providing the first comprehensive analysis of how fiscal balance simultaneously affects multiple dimensions of social expenditure in EU countries, this study offers important insights for policymakers seeking to reconcile fiscal sustainability with inclusive social policy frameworks. The findings suggest that fiscal rules should be designed to safeguard essential social investments while maintaining budgetary discipline.

Assessment of Atmospheric Acidifying Pollutant Trends and Their Potential Impact on Aquatic Carbon Stability in a Semi-Arid Basin: The Case of Konya

    Tona, Aziz Uğur; Demir, Vahdettin

The behavior of the carbon cycle within the Land-Ocean Aquatic Continuum (LOAC) is shaped not only by aquatic processes but also by chemical interactions occurring at the atmosphere–water interface. In particular, the transport of acid rain precursors such as SO2 and NOx to surface waters via deposition can alter the water’s pH balance, thereby affecting Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) fractions and CO2 emission potential. In this study, air quality measurements from three monitoring stations (Bosna, Karatay, and Meram) in Konya province of Türkiye, along with precipitation and temperature data from a representative meteorological station for the period 2021–2023, were analyzed using the Mann–Kendall Trend Test. Additionally, seasonal pH values of groundwater were examined, and their trends were compared with those of the other variables. The findings reveal striking differences on a station basis. At the Bosna station, while NO (Z = 10.80), NO2 (Z = 9.47), and NOx (Z = 10.04) showed strong increasing trends, O3 decreased significantly (Z = −15.14). At the Karatay station, significant increasing trends were detected for CO (Z = 10.01), PM10 (Z = 8.59), SO2 (Z = 5.55), and NOx (Z = 2.44), whereas O3 exhibited a negative trend (Z = −6.54). At the Meram station, a significant decrease was observed in CO (Z = −11.63), while NO2 showed an increasing trend (Z = 3.03). Analysis of meteorological series indicated no significant trend in precipitation (Z = −0.04), but a distinct increase in temperature (Z = 2.90, p < 0.01). These findings suggest that the increasing NOx load in the Konya atmosphere accelerates O3 consumption and, combined with rising temperatures, creates a potential for change in the carbon chemistry of aquatic systems. The results demonstrate that atmospheric pollutant trends constitute an indirect but significant pressure factor on the aquatic carbon cycle in semi-arid regions and highlight the necessity of integrating atmospheric processes into carbon budget analyses within the scope of LOAC.

Green-Synthesized Nanocomposites for Sustainable Fuel Desulfurization: Advances and Challenges

Ozkan, Abdullah; Ozkan, Vildan; Bozbeyoglu, Pinar; Altuner, Elif Esra

The mounting global demand for energy signifies that we must depend on fossil fuels, which engenders environmental degradation and precipitates the emission of substantial quantities of sulfur oxides (SOx). Protecting themselves from environmental pollution is a top priority for many countries. Proper removal of sulfur- containing compounds from fossil fuels is becoming a major focus. Fuels such as diesel, fuel oil, and gasoline are particularly important in this regard. Fuels such as diesel, fuel oil, and gasoline are particularly important in this regard. The numerous negative consequences of traditional hydrodesulfurization (HDS) methods are what researchers focus on, and these methods are limited. Some examples of these negative effects include higher costs, the use of too much pressure and temperature, and using too much hydrogen. Scientific studies show that biosourced nanocomposite materials are good for desulfurization methods because they can reduce the potential negative consequences. Using raw materials such as microorganisms, biopolymers, and plant extracts is one of the most important ways to increase energy efficiency and eliminate chemical emissions. The large surface areas, enhanced active site homogeneity, and diverse functional groups of nanocomposite materials obtained from such biosourced raw materials make them promising candidates for use in adsorptive and oxidative desulfurization processes. Metal- metal oxide (Fe, Ni, Cu, TiO2) and carbon- based (graphene, carbon nanotube, and biochar- supported) nanocomposites are particularly preferred for achieving high sulfur removal with low energy consumption. The provision of information on the production methods, chemical properties, sulfur removal methods, and recent scientific research on biosourced nanocomposites is the purpose of this section. In addition, the environmental benefits, economic benefits, and potential roles of biosourced materials in alternative energy systems are discussed.

Potentially Toxic Metal Levels in Cheeses Produced in Türkiye: Regional Variation, Milk Source, Ripening Stage, Production Type, and Associated Dietary Exposure and Health Risk

Gürmeriç, Hüseyin Ender; Şengül, Mustafa; Basaran, Burhan

This study investigated potentially toxic metal (PTM) levels in cheeses produced in different regions of Türkiye and evaluated the associated dietary exposure and non-carcinogenic health risk. A total of 84 cheese samples were collected from seven geographical regions and classified according to milk source, ripening stage, and production type. After microwave-assisted acid digestion, PTM levels were quantified by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and exposure and non-carcinogenic risk were evaluated using Estimated Daily Intake (EDI), Target Hazard Quotient (THQ), and Hazard Index (HI). Aluminium (Al), iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn) ranged from <0.00215 to 7.29,<0.00769 to 38.8, and 0.68 to 56.6 mg/kg wet weight, respectively, whereas chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), selenium (Se), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) ranged from <0.58 to 244, <1.26 to 369, <1.88 to 4067, <0.91 to 1378, <0.06 to 12.3, and <2.19 to 1754 µg/kg wet weight, respectively. Values marked with “<” represent concentrations below the limit of quantification (LOQ). Arsenic (As) was not detected in any sample. Significant differences were observed for selected PTMs according to ripening stage, milk source, production type, and region (p<0.05). The toxicological contribution (TC) values for nutritional PTM exposure were low. THQ and HI values remained below 1, suggesting a low overall non-carcinogenic risk; however, Pb exceedances in some samples indicate the need for continued PTM monitoring.

Beeswax Waste-Derived Pyrolysis Liquid as a Novel Multifunctional Bioactive Fraction: An Integrated Chemical and Biological Evaluation

    Gül, Abdulkadir

In this study, beeswax waste, a low-value by-product of apiculture, was converted into a liquid fraction with bioactive potential through pyrolysis-assisted thermochemical transformation. The LC–MS/MS-based chemical profile, total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant responses, and antibacterial, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, and anticholinesterase activities of beeswax waste pyrolysis liquid (BWPL) were investigated. The TPC and TFC values were determined as 95.30 ± 1.13 mg GAE/L and 51.67 ± 1.12 mg QE/L, respectively. LC–MS/MS analysis revealed benzoic acid and vanillin as the predominant compounds, along with various phenolic acids and flavonoid derivatives. BWPL showed 51.83 ± 1.51% inhibition in the ABTS•⁺ assay and 9.71 ± 0.28% inhibition in the DPPH assay. It also exhibited measurable redox capacity in Fe3+ and Cu2+ reducing power assays. In antibacterial assays, BWPL produced inhibition zones against all tested strains at 1 mg/mL and against E. coli and E. faecalis at 500 µg/mL. The IC50 values of BWPL for 5-LOX and α-glucosidase were 38.17 µg/mL and 1503.0 µg/mL, respectively. In addition, the IC50 values for AChE and BChE were calculated as 112.38 ± 0.87 mg/mL and 13.01 ± 0.42 mg/mL, respectively. PCA and correlation analyses indicated the multidimensional relationships between the LC–MS/MS-based chemical profile and biological activities. Overall, the pyrolytic conversion of beeswax waste into a chemically complex liquid fraction provides a preliminary scientific basis for waste valorization and for further investigation of pyrolysis-derived bioactive fractions.

Food reward sensitivity mediates the association between chemosensory pleasure and adiposity in young adults

Kurtbeyoglu, Emine; Caferoglu Akin, Zeynep; Aslan Gonul, Busra

This cross-sectional study investigated whether food reward sensitivity mediates the association between chemosensory pleasure and adiposity in young adults. A total of 300 university students completed the Chemosensory Pleasure Scale (CPS), the Power of Food Scale (PFS), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), alongside anthropometric assessments. Chemosensory pleasure was strongly and positively associated with food reward sensitivity (β = 0.620, p < .001), and this relationship remained robust after adjustment for age, sex, BMI, and depressive symptoms. While chemosensory pleasure showed only weak direct associations with adiposity indicators, food reward sensitivity was positively associated with body fat percentage. Mediation analyses demonstrated a significant indirect effect of chemosensory pleasure on body fat percentage through food reward sensitivity (indirect effect = 0.105; 95% CI: 0.039–0.179), indicating an indirect-only pathway. Although sex-stratified analyses suggested some pattern differences, moderated mediation analyses did not support a significant moderating role of sex. These findings suggest that chemosensory pleasure may be related to adiposity primarily when accompanied by increased food reward sensitivity. The results highlight food reward sensitivity as a potential psychological mechanism linking sensory responsiveness to adiposity.

Factors effecting users’ intention to re-visit online secondhand clothing shopping platforms and the mediating role of satisfaction

    Avci, Ibrahim

With the rise of online shopping, platforms and applications for secondhand clothing shopping have arisen. Consumers utilize these platforms and applications to buy secondhand garments that they require and sell the things they don’t use. It is critical to identify the characteristics that influence users’ intentions to re-visit these platforms and services, as well as their satisfaction. In this context, the goal of this research is to determine the effects of economic value, interaction with other customers, information privacy concerns, and environmental awareness on the intention to re-visit online secondhand clothing shopping platforms, as well as to uncover the mediating role of platform satisfaction in these effects. In order to achieve this goal, data was gathered using an online survey, which 430 customers completed altogether. According to the findings of the analysis, satisfaction, economic value, interaction with other customers, and environmental awareness all have significant positive effects on the intention to re-visit online secondhand clothing shopping platforms, whereas information privacy concerns have a negative. Furthermore, satisfaction was found to play a mediating role in the association between intention to re-visit online secondhand clothing shopping platforms and economic value (full mediation) as well as interaction with other customers (full mediation). These results provide theoretical implications for identifying the factors that influence users to re-visit second-hand shopping websites and managerial implications for redesigning platforms with a focus on customer satisfaction.
