Nurses’ Workplace Discrimination Experiences and Their Reflections on Career Development: A Qualitative Study

Koroglu Kaba, Nagihan; Apaydin, Emine; Kulakaç, Nurşen

Aim: This study was conducted to examine how nurses experience discriminatory behaviors in the workplace and how these experiences are reflected in their career development. Background: Although discrimination constitutes a significant challenge in nurses’ professional lives, qualitative research examining how these experiences influence their career development processes remains limited. Methods: This phenomenological study was conducted with nurses working in a public hospital in Turkey. Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with 21 nurses during the study. Participants were selected from various clinical settings through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's seven-step content analysis method. Ethics committee approval was obtained for this study. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research checklist guided the study reporting. Results: Five main themes with seven subthemes emerged: (1) Discrimination Experiences (types of discrimination, sources of discrimination, emotions/feelings), (2) Reporting Behavior (decision and consequences of reporting, reasons for not reporting), (3) Impact of Discrimination on Career Development (supportive effect, hindering effect), (4) Coping Strategies, and (5) Suggestions for Preventing Discrimination. Discussion: These themes highlight that discrimination is a multidimensional phenomenon and that holistic approaches must be developed at emotional, structural, professional, and institutional levels to cope with it. Conclusion: For some nurses, discrimination acts as a transformative process that supports career development, while for others, it represents a significant barrier to professional advancement. Implications for Nursing/Nursing Policy: The findings highlight the need to strengthen reporting mechanisms, establish a supportive work culture, and implement inclusive institutional policies that promote career development.

Valorization of tea industry waste into boric acid–activated carbon for phenol removal from aqueous solutions

Duran, Celal; Ozdes, Duygu; Ozdemir, Olcay; Onal, Yunus; Gundogdu, Ali

The tea industry generates substantial quantities of solid waste with limited high-value industrial applications. In this study, tea industry waste was converted into boric acid-activated carbon (BA–TAC) through a simple one-step chemical activation process and evaluated as an adsorbent for phenol removal from aqueous solutions. BA–TAC exhibited a mixed micro–mesoporous structure with a BET surface area of 592.59 m2 g−1. The adsorption performance was investigated as a function of solution pH, contact time, and initial phenol concentration. Adsorption kinetics were evaluated using pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich, Avrami, and intraparticle diffusion models, whereas equilibrium data were analyzed using Langmuir, Freundlich, and Sips isotherms. Linear, pseudo-linear, and non-linear regression approaches were comparatively evaluated, demonstrating the limitations of conventional linearization and the superiority of direct non-linear regression. Moreover, the so-called linearized forms of multi-parameter models such as Sips are not truly linear because iterative parameter estimation remains necessary. The maximum experimental phenol adsorption capacity reached 101.80 mg g−1 despite the moderate BET surface area of BA–TAC. The experimentally determined natural pH and pHpzc values, together with the limited desorption efficiency, indicated that adsorption was governed predominantly by surface chemical interactions rather than electrostatic attraction alone. XPS analysis confirmed the incorporation of boron-containing surface functionalities, highlighting their contribution to phenol adsorption. Overall, this study demonstrates the successful valorization of tea industry waste into a functional boron-modified activated carbon while providing methodological guidance for reliable adsorption kinetics and equilibrium modeling, thereby supporting sustainable waste valorization.

Advancing Digital Wallet Security Through Multi-Factor Authentication and Homomorphic Encryption-Based Privacy Preservation

Genemo, Musa Dima; Kumar, Kotha Anil; Sadat, Quazi Taif; Santosh, Kathari; Sreeram, G.; Raj, I. Infant; Dash, R.; Rautray, R.; Mishra, S.K.

Digital wallets have been provided by FinTech businesses thus reengineering the financial services but nonetheless there is a possibility of keyloggers, bogus personas and assaults of the server with conventional systems using PIN authentication. The current multi-factor authentication configuration usually leaves sensitive biometric information exposed as the logins are processed. To address these security issues, the paper proposes the MHESecAuth that employs Multi-Factor Homomorphic Encryption and Smart Contracts to authenticate. The permission to make transactions is secure since the system operates with PINs, OTPs and no one can view the biometrics. As per experimental research, the system can be accurate at 96.4 percent, false acceptance rate is 0.08 percent, false rejection rate is 0.6 percent and encryption consumes 160ms. The framework optimizes security, privacy and performance against both MFA, encryption-only and combined solutions and is therefore suitable in the development of quantum-secure digital wallets and still blockchain-based audit and transparency.

Seismic potential in and around the Muş basin (Eastern Türkiye): Insights from stress analysis and statistical modeling; [Muş havzası (Doğu Türkiye) ve civarındaki deprem potansiyeli: Gerilme analizi ve istatistiksel modellemeden elde edilen çıkarımlar]

Şimşek, Ecenur Cansu; Alkan, Hamdi; Öztürk, Serkan

In this research, current and near-future potential earthquake zones in and around Muş basin (eastern Türkiye) are investigated using the instrumental period earthquake catalog and focal mechanism parameters of local earthquakes. For this purpose, the relationships between the b-value distributions and the Colulomb stress changes are interpreted with different depth ranges (5 to 25 km). Also, for a reliable prediction, the occurrence probabilities, recurrence periods of earthquakes, and the Z-value distribution (seismic quiescence areas) are taken into consideration. 15,722 earthquakes with moment magnitudes with 0.8≤Mw≤6.9 between the latitudes of 38.2°N-39.6°N and longitudes of 40.0°E-43.0°E, over a period of ~90.63 years between November 12, 1934, and June 30, 2025, are used for all statistical analyses. Completeness magnitude, Mc-value is accepted as 2.5±0.5. The b-value is determined to be 0.780 ± 0.04, which is smaller than the average (b = 1.0). Additionally, twenty local events with magnitudes greater than Mw≥4.8 are selected to image the Coulomb stress changes. The occurrence probabilities of earthquakes with Mw=5.5, 6.5, and 6.9 in 10 years are predicted as ~83%, ~27% and ~15%, respectively. Recurrence periods of events with these magnitudes are estimated as ~13, ~32, and ~63 years, respectively. Large Z-values are detected in the Kargapazarı segment, Bingöl province, and west of the Kulp and Kozluk segments. Additionally, the analyses of b-value and Coulomb stress change used for hazard prediction reveal a decreasing b-value and an increasing stress change around the Karlıova Triple Junction at a depth of approximately 10 km. Finally, these seismotectonic parameters can represent the possible locations for earthquake occurrences in the near future.

Do environmental taxes improve environmental sustainability beyond net-zero emissions? Evidence from ecological footprint subcomponents in the EU

Recepoğlu, Mürşit; Cay Cakir, Sümeyra; Cakir, Mehmet Ali; Artan, Seyfettin; Hayaloğlu, Pınar; Keşap, Doğan

Environmental degradation has manifested in various forms, including air and water pollution. Therefore, the impacts of environmental policies should be evaluated across all dimensions of environmental degradation. The European Union has targeted to stop CO2 emissions by 2050. Accordingly, the literature has predominantly focused on the relationship between environmental taxation and CO₂ emissions. Even if the net-zero emissions target is achieved, this does not necessarily ensure the elimination of overall environmental degradation. This study investigates the impact of environmental taxation on environmental degradation in the European Union over the period 1995–2021 using the Driscoll-Kraay (1998) estimator. The study focuses on the impact of environmental tax on ecological footprint and its subcomponents. The findings show that the ecological footprint and its subcomponents, except for built-up land and forest product footprints, can be mitigated by current environmental tax policies. However, in order to achieve net-zero environmental degradation, the European Union must reduce pressures arising from built-up land and forest product footprints. In addition to the Driscoll-Kraay (1998) estimator, the Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS) estimator is employed as a robustness check, and the results remain broadly consistent across both methods. Moreover, Dumitrescu and Hurlin (2012) causality test states that strong and bidirectional causal relationships between environmental tax and ecological footprint components. This overall result confirms the existence of a green dividend within the double dividend hypothesis. It is suggested that renewable energy plants should be constructed in areas where built-up land and forest products footprint are not affected. For example, floating solar panels do not use land and also protect water bodies from evaporation.

Türkkan, Tuğba; Hatipoğlu, Ertuğrul; Yücel, İbrahim; Kulakaç, Nurşen; Sipahi, Ferkan; Zeybek, Halil İbrahim

Violence against women represents a severe violation of human rights and has become a pervasive issue globally. This study aims to examine the risk factors associated with violence against women in a developing country context, specifically Turkey. This study adopted a cross-sectional research design. The study sample comprised 391 women living in a northeastern Turkish province, selected using a stratified sampling method. Participants’ ages ranged from 20 to 60 years, with a mean age of 40.83 years. The findings revealed a positive correlation between the age of both women and their spouses and the likelihood of experiencing physical and verbal violence. Factors such as the number of marriages, duration of marriage, number of children, and spousal infidelity emerged as significant risks for victimization. Additionally, an early age at first marriage, the presence of mental illness, and addiction problems were identified as critical risk factors for women’s victimization in violence. Education and employment were protective factors against violence, with higher educational levels and employment status for women and their spouses reducing the risk. Regression analyses further identified women’s education level, prior exposure to domestic violence, age at first marriage, and the addiction status of the spouse as significant predictors of violence against women. The findings provide valuable insights into the etiology of violence against women. In conclusion, the study has the potential to guide the development of more targeted and effective strategies to combat this pervasive public health and human rights issue.

Özparlak, Arif; Gül, Uğur; Karakaya, Dudu; Efe, Emine

Objective The aim of this study was to develop the Healthy Internet Use Scale for Adolescents (HIUS-A) and examine its psychometric properties in order to evaluate healthy internet use (HIU) among adolescents. Methods The study was conducted according to a methodological, correlational and cross-sectional design. Data was collected between September and December 2025 at three middle schools and three high schools in the province of Antalya, Türkiye. The study used a stratified sampling method, and it was completed with 516 adolescents. The scale's content validity was examined through expert evaluation, and its construct validity was tested through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The reliability of the scale was assessed using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, split-half reliability, and item-total correlations. Results The analyses revealed that HIUS-A exhibited a two-factor structure explaining 49.1% of the total variance. These factors were named “self-control” and “conscious use”. Confirmatory factor analysis findings revealed that the model showed a good level of fit (χ2/sd = 1.450; RMSEA = 0.042; SRMR = 0.039; CFI = 0.981). The internal consistency coefficient was calculated as 0.864 for the total scale, 0.855 for the “self-control” subscale, and 0.711 for the “conscious use” subscale. Conclusion HIUS-A is a valid and reliable ten-item assessment tool for evaluating healthy internet use in adolescents. Implications for practice The scale may be used by nurses and other healthcare professionals to determine HIU levels in adolescents and to evaluate the effectiveness of intervention studies relating to HIU.

Assessing the Predictive Value of Kolmogorov–Arnold Networks for the No–Reflow Phenomenon in ST–Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction: A Comparative Machine Learning Study; [ST Segment Yükselmeli Miyokard Enfarktüsünde No–Reflow Fenomeni için Kolmogorov–Arnold Ağlarının Öngörü Değerinin Değerlendirilmesi: Karşılaştırmalı Makine Öğrenimi Çalışması]

Taşolar, Hakan; Bayramoğlu, Adil; Günen, Mehmet Akif; Levent, Sümeyye; Güral, Yunus; Halisdemir, Nurhan

Objective: The no-reflow phenomenon in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is a significant clinical issue associated with poor cardiovascular outcomes. This study aimed to develop and compare multiple supervised machine learning algorithms, including the recently introduced Kolmogorov-Arnold Network (KAN), to predict the occurrence of the no-reflow phenomenon in patients with STEMI undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Method: This prospective, single-center study included 890 consecutive STEMI patients undergoing primary PCI. The Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) was utilized to address class imbalance during training. Feature selection using analysis of variance (ANOVA) F-statistics and validation of feature independence (Variance Inflation Factor [VIF] < 5) identified ejection fraction (EF), baseline troponin level, stent length, B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) level, and total ischemic time as the most influential predictors. Results: The KAN and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) models achieved the highest predictive accuracy (area under the curve > 0.98, F1 > 0.95), outperforming traditional models such as logistic regression and decision tree classifiers (DeLong test, P < 0.001). Feature selection improved efficiency and reduced runtime by 20–40%, while Shapley Additive exPlanations-based (SHAP-based) explainability confirmed that the predictions were physiologically consistent: higher EF and lower BNP reduced the probability of no-reflow, whereas longer stent length and ischemic time increased it. The superior performance of KAN and XGBoost underscores the importance of modeling nonlinear relationships and multidimensional interactions among clinical, laboratory, and procedural variables. Conclusion: These findings suggest that KAN may serve as a reliable analytical framework for exploring complex cardiovascular outcomes. However, further multicenter and externally validated studies are needed to confirm its generalizability and potential role in clinical risk assessment.

Mixed Method Investigation of the Major Challenges to the Sustainable Deployment of the Electric Vehicle Charging Station Network in Türkiye

Erol, Ismail; Oztel, Ahmet; Peker, Iskender; Ar, Ilker Murat; Benli, Tolga; Turan, İsmet

Charging the increasing number of electric vehicles (EVs) in use requires the deployment of EV charging station networks (EVCSN). However, there are various challenges to deploying EVCSN in a sustainable manner. Türkiye, a developing country, should also build a robust EVCSN to encourage future adoption of EVs as the country’s market for EVs has been rapidly growing. The literature review concludes that no previous study has systematically explored challenges to the sustainable deployment of EVCSN. The goal of this study is, therefore, twofold: first, it identifies those challenges through the lenses of commonly used theories. Second, it explores them using a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework that incorporates a rough-derived interval-valued neutrosophic set (R-IVN)-based ISM into MICMAC. By deriving interval neutrosophic information from single-valued expert inputs using rough number operators, the proposed approach more accurately captures epistemic uncertainty and variability in expert judgments compared to conventional interval-based models. The method is further validated through a novel Dice–Sørensen similarity index-based simulation approach. The findings of this study suggest that developing government policies and regulations and addressing the existence of vertically integrated companies are the critical challenges with higher driving powers. These findings provide key responsibilities for stakeholders, including urban municipalities, in developing guidelines for EVCSN deployment.

Hydrometallurgical Extraction of Aluminum and Rare-Earth Elements (REEs) from REE-Bearing Bauxite Ores: Recent Advances

    Uysal, Turan; Supriyatna, Yayat Iman

Rare-earth elements (REEs) are geologically widespread, but their mining and especially processing are concentrated in a small number of countries; as demand grows, some specific REEs may face supply shortages in the near future. Consequently, owing to their economic potential even at low concentrations, ability to provide alternative supply opportunities, and process development potential, various countries are conducting studies on REE production from secondary geological sources such as high-silica bauxite ore. This study provides a detailed examination of aluminum (Al) and REE recovery from bauxite ore, emphasizing sustainable utilization of these resources. In this context, the study presents the technological evaluation potential of these deposits in the context of modern demands, the acquisition process, and an analysis of the main technical difficulties in this process. Furthermore, the application of both mechanical and thermal activation methods in conjunction may prove more economically viable and environmentally sustainable by reducing the temperature requirements of fossil fuel-consuming heat treatment. The development of sustainable Al and REE recovery technology from bauxite ore is of significant importance, not only in terms of mitigating supply risk but also as an alternative source for REE production.

Selective Determination of Trace Co(II) and Cu(II) in Food and Environmental Matrices via Carrier Element-Free Coprecipitation Using a Novel Thiosemicarbazone-Derived Schiff Base

Bulut, Volkan N.; Demirci, Hamit; Ozdes, Duygu; Gundogdu, Ali; Bektas, Hakan; Soylak, Mustafa; Duran, Celal

A carrier element-free coprecipitation (CEFC) method was developed for the preconcentration and determination of trace Co(II) and Cu(II) in environmental and food samples using a novel thiosemicarbazone-derived Schiff base ligand (MBITAH). Unlike conventional coprecipitation approaches, the proposed strategy eliminates the need for inorganic carriers, reducing potential interferences and improving selectivity toward the target analytes. Under optimized conditions (pH 7.0, 1.5 mg ligand), quantitative recoveries were achieved with limits of detection of 1.16 and 0.79 µg L⁻1 for Co(II) and Cu(II), respectively. A preconcentration factor of 50 enabled sensitive determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) with good precision (RSD ≤ 3.7%). The method exhibited good tolerance toward common matrix ions and was validated using certified-reference material (CRM-SA-C Sandy Soil C) and spike/recovery tests, showing agreement with certified values (p > 0.05). Its applicability was demonstrated in sea water, stream water, and food samples (red lentil and bulgur), confirming reliable performance in complex matrices. Compared with previously reported approaches, the proposed CEFC method offers a favorable balance between analytical performance, simplicity, and cost-effectiveness. In addition, greenness assessment using the AGREE tool yielded a score of 0.45, indicating a moderate-to-good level of environmental friendliness.

Solvent extraction of rare earth elements and α-alumina production from pregnant leaching solution obtained from Turkish bauxite-related ore

    Erust, Ceren; Uysal, Turan

The use of bauxite-related shales as a secondary source for the extraction of rare earth elements (REEs) is very important to meet the raw material supply, which is the keystone of advanced technology applications. This study presents the investigation into the recovery of REEs from Kızıldağ shale ore and the potential utilization of its leach residue as a silica source. Mineralogical analysis revealed that the ore predominantly consists of paragonite, muscovite, quartz, pyrophyllite, and calcite. Calcined ore was subjected to acid leaching, and the resulting pregnant solution was purified using solvent extraction to separate from aluminum the ∑REEs with a content of 1887.35 ppm. Optimal solvent extraction conditions 1.5 M D2EHPA, 50% O/A ratio, pH 1.5, and 15-minute mixing time achieved 95% total REE extraction, with efficiency in the order Pr > La > Nd > Ce > Dy > Y > Sc. To purify Al from the Fe- and K-rich solution post-SX, electrolysis was performed, resulting in 97.16% precipitation efficiency of Al as Al(OH)3 at pH 5. The precipitate was subsequently roasted at 1100°C to produce α-alumina with 75.2% Al2O3 content. These findings confirm the technical feasibility of recovering REEs and producing coarse-purity alumina from Kızıldağ shale ore.

Digital cultivation of violence: a mixed-methods analysis of content and sentiment in YouTube comments on popular Turkish TV series

Olgun, Oğuzhan; Demirel, Çağatay; Demirel, Uğur

This study examines the contemporary manifestations of George Gerbner’s Cultivation Theory within the Turkish media landscape by analyzing the relationship between televised representations of violence and digital audience reception. Adopting a mixed-methods research design, the study first conducts a structured qualitative content analysis of 15 selected episodes from three popular Turkish TV series (Camdaki Kız, Sadakatsiz, and Son Yaz) to categorize and quantify various forms of violence. Subsequently, a large-scale computational emotion analysis is performed on 74,478 YouTube comments associated with these episodes using two transformer-based Turkish language models (KUBI and TREMO). The content analysis findings reveal a high prevalence of emotional and psychological violence (61.3%) across all series, followed by physical violence (29.9%), suggesting that mediated harm is increasingly represented through relational and verbal conflict. The computational analysis suggests that these narrative patterns are associated with a high-arousal and largely negative emotional environment in audience discourse, especially around anger and sadness. Notably, while traditional cultivation research emphasizes fear as a primary outcome (Mean World Syndrome), this study finds that digital reception is characterized more by outward-facing anger and moral disgust than by internalized apprehension. The results are consistent with the interpretation that the “seeds” of television cultivation continue to circulate within networked media ecologies, where televised conflict is publicly interpreted and emotionally negotiated through collective digital interaction. By bridging the gap between screen reality and platformed discourse, the research provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the long-term affective impact of Turkish television narratives in the digital age.

A numerical case study on distinct inerter-based TMD configurations for SDOF structures under near-fault and far-fault ground motions

    Araz, Onur; Abdo Saif, M.M.

This study presents a comprehensive optimization and performance evaluation of three distinct inerter-based tuned mass damper (TMD) configurations (C3, C4, and C6) for seismic vibration control. The optimal parameters for three different structural damping ratios (0%, 2%, and 5%) and a wide range of mass ratio (0 to 0.1) suitable for practical applications are determined in the frequency domain using the Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) algorithm to minimize the displacement response. To bridge the gap between complex optimization and practical engineering, novel empirical design formulas are proposed, enabling researchers to determine optimal parameters for C3, C4, and C6 configurations without requiring exhaustive computational effort. Unlike previous studies, the study presents a rigorous validation of inerter effectiveness through an extensive suite of 160 ground motions, providing a granular comparison of performance under near-fault excitations versus far-fault records. Results demonstrate that while inerter-based systems significantly outperform classical TMDs in the frequency domain, their comparative superiority in the time domain is more bound, with average response reduction improvements of approximately 5%. The inerter-based TMDs exhibit the highest efficiency in mitigating kinetic energy, followed by displacement and acceleration. Notably, the effectiveness of the control systems is found to be highly sensitive to ground motion characteristics and structural damping, where higher damping ratios consistently lead to reduced control performance. Considering the trade-off between seismic efficiency and mechanical simplicity, the C6 configuration is identified as the most viable solution for structural protection.

Influence of Hawthorn (Crataegus tanacetifolia) Fruit Vinegar Supplementation on Meat Quality and Gut MicrobiotainHeat-StressedBroilers; [Alıç (Crataegus tanacetifolia) Meyve Sirkesi Takviyesinin Isı Stresi Altındaki Etlik Piliçlerde Et Kalitesi ve Bağırsak Mikrobiyotası Üzerindeki Etkisi]

    Kaya, Hacer; Kamiloğlu, Aybike

This study investigated the influence of the consumption of hawthorn (Crataegus tanacetifolia) fruit vinegar (HFV), a fermented product, on meat quality and gut microbiota in broiler chickens under cyclic heat stress (HS). A total of 300 one-day-old male Ross 308 chicks were divided into six groups with five replicates of ten birds, following a 2×3 factorial design with two temperatures (24 and 35°C) and three HFV supplementing levels (0, 2, and 4 mL/L) after one-week acclimation. Broilers in the thermoneutral groups were kept at 24°C, while HS groups experienced 35°C for 8 hours daily from day 21. Feed and water were provided ad libitum under a 24-hour lighting program. HS increased breast pH, reduced b* color value, raised ΣSFA and ΣMUFA levels, and lowered ΣUFA and ΣPUFA ratios. Supplementing 4 mL/L HFV increased breast L* color value and ΣSFA level while reducing ΣUFA ratio. The 2 mL/L HFV dose decreased ΣMUFA and increased ΣPUFA levels. Overall, HFV supplementation improved meat quality and beneficially altered fatty acid composition in heat-stressed broiler breasts. These results suggest that HFV supplementation may be a practical natural additive for broilers under cyclic heat stress and provide new evidence regarding its combined effects on meat quality and intestinal microbiota. Yoga-based breathing exercises performed in a salt-cave environment versus a standard clinical setting in smokers: a randomized controlled trial salt-cave breathing exercises in smokers

Bağci, Uğur; Alpteki̇n, Hasan Kerem; Hatik, Sefa Haktan; Aydin, Emine Büşra

Backgorund: To investigate the effect of a speleotherapy environment on spirometric parameters in smokers and to compare the outcomes with those of the same yoga-based breathing exercise program performed in a standard clinical setting. Methods: This randomized controlled clinical trial included 60 adult smokers aged 18–65 years who were allocated to a speleotherapy group (n = 30) or a control group (n = 30). Both groups received the same physiotherapist-supervised yoga-based breathing exercise program for 6 weeks, twice weekly, in 50-minute sessions; the only difference was the intervention setting. Forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in 1 s, peak expiratory flow, and forced expiratory volume in 1 s/forced vital capacity were assessed at baseline, week 3, and week 6. Physical activity, functional exercise capacity, and quality of life were also evaluated. Data were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models with group, time, and group × time interaction as fixed effects and participant as a random effect. Results: Both groups showed improvements over time in spirometric and secondary outcomes. In the linear mixed-effects model analysis, the primary spirometric outcome, forced expiratory volume in 1 s, showed a significant group × time interaction in favor of the speleotherapy group. Significant group × time effects were also observed for 6-minute walk distance and selected quality-of-life domains, whereas broader spirometric superiority across forced vital capacity, peak expiratory flow, and forced expiratory volume in 1 s/forced vital capacity was limited. Conclusion: The findings suggest that the treatment environment may influence selected respiratory and functional outcomes in smokers. Yoga-based breathing exercises were associated with improvements in spirometric outcomes in both settings. The additional effect of the salt-cave environment on respiratory outcomes was limited, with a significant between-group difference observed only for forced expiratory volume in 1 s. The salt-cave setting may also be associated with greater improvements in functional capacity and selected quality-of-life outcomes, but broader pulmonary benefits or an independent speleotherapy effect cannot be concluded from the present findings. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT07737587. Retrospectively registered on 30 July 2026.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of live and robotic cat-assisted therapies on chemotherapyinduced symptoms and happiness levels in patients with cancer. SAMPLE & SETTING: 45 patients were randomly assigned to live cat therapy, robotic cat therapy, or control groups in a university hospital. METHODS & VARIABLES: Data were collected between June 1 and September 1, 2023. Patients in therapy groups interacted with a live or robotic cat for 20 minutes twice weekly for three months. RESULTS: Although the live cat therapy group had higher median happiness scores than the robotic cat therapy group, differences in happiness and symptom scores between groups were not statistically significant. Both therapies alleviated chemotherapy-induced symptoms and enhanced emotional well-being, with robotic cat therapy showing slightly greater overall effectiveness. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: Robotic pet therapy offers a feasible alternative where live animalassisted therapy is impractical. Integrating these therapies into oncology nursing can enhance symptom management and psychological support, promoting holistic, patient-centered care.

Foreign direct investment inflows are an important factor in the development of countries. Rising FDI can cause unexpected environmental consequences by changing technology use or energy consumption. The study examined the relationships between fossil energy consumption, carbon emission rate, and FDI for 27 European Union countries in the period 2006–2021. In addition, for the first time in this study, EU countries were divided into two according to their income levels and re-analysed. Panel data method and robust Driscoll and Kraay (1998) estimator were used in empirical analyses. The research findings show that a one-unit increase in FDI across EU countries results in a 0.055% increase in GDP and fossil fuel consumption, respectively, and a −0.155% decrease in pollution. These results support the pollution halo hypothesis, which posits that foreign direct investment reduces environmental degradation. The research findings support the pollution halo hypothesis, which states that FDI reduces environmental degradation. It also confirms that the EKC hypothesis, which states that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between pollution and GDP, is valid in 27 EU countries. However, it has been determined that the pollution haven hypothesis is valid in low-income EU countries. Low-income EU countries should encourage more foreign investment in technology-intensive and environmentally friendly areas and develop various environmental regulations in this direction. The results obtained from the research are expected to provide benefits and insights to policy makers, researchers, and industrialists to increase environmental awareness. The results suggest that low-income EU countries should encourage technology-intensive and environmentally friendly investments, improve green financing and investment conditions, and develop regulations to strengthen environmental standards, so that they can limit environmental degradation while preserving the general welfare-enhancing benefits of FDI.
