- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Disaster Management Experiences and Psychosocial Problems of Individuals Who Survived the Earthquake in Turkey in the Earthquake of the Century: A Phenomenological Study
Ulutaşdemir, Nilgün; Uzun, Sevda; Kulakaç, Nurşen
Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the disaster management experiences and psychosocial problems of individuals who survived the earthquake in Turkey during the earthquake of the century. Materials and Methods: A qualitative research design, phenomenological research, was applied in this study. This qualitative study included 33 volunteer earthquake survivors. The interviews were conducted using WhatsApp. Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis method was used to analyze the data. Results: In the analysis of the data, five themes (perception of the earthquake concept, things to do during an earthquake, actions taken to survive under the rubble, meeting everyday chores and dealing with post-earthquake challenges, perceptions of disaster management), and fifteensubthemes (features of the earthquake, emotions, thoughts, correct actions, incorrect actions, actions for the body, situation-oriented actions, housing, nutrition, hygiene, sleep, security, preparation, coping, and intervention) were identified. Conclusion: The study showed that the earthquake negatively affected individuals psychosocially, but the effective spiritual coping mechanisms utilized to cope with the catastrophic event under the rubble supported the survival process. In addition, it was determined that the participants believed that religion and spirituality were important in coping with the earthquake.

Başkan, Elif; Şahin, Rıdvan; Kahraman, C.; Oztaysi, B.; Cebi, S.; Cevik Onar, S.; Tolga, C.; Ucal Sari, I.; Otay, I.
In this study, we present a new method for developing Basic Probability Assignment (BPA) using Linguistic Fuzzy Sets (LFS). Dempster-Shafer Theory (DST) is used to efficiently combine different data sources. The use of LFS provides a robust structure for managing uncertainty in decision making by representing knowledge in linguistic terms. However, effectively integrating multiple uncertain sources requires a strong probabilistic approach. To overcome this challenge, we propose a method to derive BPA values directly from linguistic terms, ensuring compatibility with the DST fusion rule. We then use the Dempster-Shafer combination rule to combine information from various sources, thereby improving the reliability of the decision-making process.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025The Impact of Militarisation on Environmental Degradation in the E7 Countries: Panel CS-ARDL Approach
Yildiz, Gizem Akbulut; Yildiz, Barış; Al, İbrahim; Kanca, Osman Cenk
This paper, within the framework of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), investigates the impact of militarisation on environmental degradation, including the role of renewable energy. Military expenditure and burden are used as proxies for militarisation, and models are estimated to quantify their relationship with carbon dioxide (CO2 ) emissions. The study utilizes the CS-ARDL approach to analyse data from Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, and Turkey collectively known as the E7 nations from 1992 to 2022. The method employs both fixed-effect and random-effect models, taking into account short-run and long-run coefficients while accounting for cross-sectional dependencies and heterogeneities. The study puts forward four hypotheses for investigation, and a notable finding is that military expenditure, contradicting prevalent sustainability assumptions, has a substantial impact on the reduction of CO2 emissions over both short and long-run periods. This suggests that within the E7 context, militarisation may paradoxically function as a catalyst for environmental conservation rather than a detrimental impact. The findings further corroborate the inverted U-shaped EKC hypothesis by demonstrating that while economic growth initially increases emission levels, these levels begin to decline once a certain income threshold is reached. The study also underscores the long-run benefits of renewable energy in reducing CO2 emissions and advocates for investment in green energy projects, complemented by implementing viable environmental policies. These insights offer actionable guidance for policymakers seeking to harmonize economic development with environmental protection and sustainability objectives.

The Central Black Sea region is a very dense region in terms of orchid diversity. As a consequence of the floral studies, 32 species of salep orchids were identified in the Central Black Sea Region. The aim of this current study was to identify the secondary metabolite profiles of leaves and tubers of two orchid species (Anacamptis palustris and Ophrys apifera) with different drying methods by HPLC analysis and to determine their antibacterial and antioxidant activities. For this purpose, different drying methods were applied to the roots and leaves of these two species. The species were dried by 3 different techniques: shade, lyophilizer and oven. After the aqueous extracts were obtained, their antibacterial and antioxidant activities were tested and HPLC analysis was completed. The data obtained from aqueous extracts as a result of drying techniques were compared with the data obtained from fresh plant aqueous extracts. Antibacterial properties were tested against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 bacteria. No antibacterial activity was found in the study. Antioxidant properties were tested via DPPH and FRAP assays. As a result of DPPH free radical scavenging assay, the highest antioxidant efficiency in A. palustris was observed in leaves dried in lyophilizer (76.53%), in the shade (62.13%) and in the oven (54.12%), respectively. Nine different phenolic compounds were found in aqueous extracts of these species. Epicatechin, Gallic Acid, Rutin, Syringic Acid phenolic compounds were observed the most in HPLC analysis. The results of current study suggest that these extracts have antioxidant and phenolic contents and should be investigated in more comprehensive studies.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Energy-Efficient 8-PAM Optical DAC Design for Visible Light Communication Systems
Başer, Oğuzhan; Küçük, Mehmet Ali; Albayrak, Cenk; Türk, Kadir
This paper presents a cost-effective and energy-efficient optical digital-to-analog converter (ODAC) transmitter scheme for visible light communication (VLC) systems. The proposed ODAC transmitter enables data transmission while providing lighting, as desired in VLC systems, unlike existing ODAC structures in the literature, by switching power LEDs at high speeds with a MOSFET-based switching circuit design. This paper also discusses the ODAC design stages and presents the points to be considered in detail. In addition, by implementing the hardware design of an ODAC transmitter with a 3-bit resolution, that is, capable of generating 8-PAM signals, based on the proposed ODAC architecture, experimental studies are conducted for energy efficiency and communication performance results via the established VLC system using the designed ODAC. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed ODAC transmitter achieves a data transmission rate of 18.75 Mbps with a bit error rate (BER) below the forward error correction (FEC) limit at a communication distance of 4 m, while also exhibiting a high power efficiency of 94%.

Ergüney, Gülşen; Gündoğdu, Engin; Baltaci, Cemalettin
This study presents the development and validation of analytical methods for the qualitative and quantitative determination of Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) in yogurt and ayran. The methods were evaluated for their detection limit (LOD), quantification limit (LOQ), and method detection limit (MDL) across multiple samples, demonstrating robust sensitivity with MDL and LOD values of 0.03% for both yogurt and ayran. Recovery studies showed high accuracy, with recovery rates between 98% and 100%, and consistent recovery within the acceptable range of 97–103%, reinforcing the methods' reliability. The quantitative analysis exhibited strong repeatability and reproducibility, with low relative standard deviations (RSDr and RSDR), confirming minimal intra-day and inter-day variability. The calibration curves for CMC analysis demonstrated excellent linearity with high coefficients of determination (R2 = 0.9985 for yogurt and 0.9951 for ayran), ensuring accurate quantification over a wide concentration range. Measurement uncertainty analysis further validated the methods' precision and accuracy, showing low relative uncertainties for trueness, repeatability, and reproducibility. Robustness evaluations indicated that the methods maintained consistent recovery rates despite variations in pH, heating time, and sample quantity, highlighting their reliability under different conditions. For qualitative analysis, the visual images method showed exceptional performance with perfect sensitivity and specificity, accurately identifying all positive and negative samples without any false positives or negatives. This high level of accuracy makes the visual images method a valuable tool for ensuring product safety and compliance with quality standards in the dairy industry. Overall, the validated analytical methods for CMC detection in yogurt and ayran demonstrated high precision, accuracy, and reliability, making them essential for quality control and regulatory compliance in dairy production.
- MakaleYalnız künye2025Evaluation of the Psychometric Properties of the Turkish Form of the Will-to-Live Scale in Older Adults
Kütük, B.
Abstract: The Will-to-Live (WTL) scale measures desire for life and life commitment across populations. However, psychometric evidence for a Turkish older adult WTL screening model is lacking. In this study, the WTL was first translated into Turkish using established procedures, followed by the collection of psychometric information on the Turkish form (WTL-T). Included in the study were community-dwelling older adults (aged 65–85 years) who could be considered representative of the older adult Turkish population, who were asked to complete the WTL scale, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, the Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale, the Geriatric Depression Scale, the Brief Resilient Coping Scale, as well as a single-item WTL and self-rated health. The exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses demonstrated an acceptable model fit of the WTL-T, yielding a single-factor model that explained 66.45% of the variance. Furthermore, the WTL-T was found to have high internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.865) and convergent validity was demonstrated by the strong positive correlations identified through the single-item WTL question (r = 0.810, p < 0.001). The moderate to high correlations of the scale with theoretically related measures supported its concurrent validity (r = –0.299 to 0.742, all p’s < 0.01). The evidence presented in the present study identifies the WTL-T as a concise, appropriate and psychometrically sound instrument for the assessment of WTL in older adults living in Turkey.
- MakaleYalnız künye2025Effect of frequency content of ground motion on seismic response of buildings with variable aspect ratio including soil-structure interaction
Kaya, Dilek; Cakir, Tufan; Ozturk, Kasif Furkan; Araz, Onur
Soil-structure interaction (SSI) may lead to reduction, amplification or negligible change in structural responses depending on the relationship between the nature of excitations and subsoil conditions. Since neglecting SSI effects may cause uncertainties in seismic design, it is crucial to consider them during the design process. Another important factor affecting the dynamic behavior of structures interacting with the ground is the dynamic properties of the structures. To consider this effect, three buildings with 4, 8, and 12 stories designed in accordance with the Turkish Building Earthquake Code (TBEC-2018) are analyzed. The aspect ratios of these structures are 2, 4, and 6, corresponding to squat, ordinary, and slender structures, respectively. The primary objective of this study is to simulate the combined effects of these key parameters on the dynamic response of reinforced concrete structures. In the time history analyses, six ground motions classified by three different frequency contents are considered. 3D finite element models of SSI systems are established using ANSYS software. The usability of the numerical models is demonstrated for both SSI and fixed-base cases through three different analytical approaches. The displacement, acceleration, and stress responses are examined through time history analyses. The results indicate that the SSI is not negligible and neglecting the SSI is an oversimplification that does not lead to always-conservative predictions. Moreover, both the frequency content of the excitation and the structural aspect ratio are found to be decisive parameters in seismic response.
- MakaleYalnız künye2025Ecological effects of energy use and tourism-induced transport modes among coastline Mediterranean countries
Cakir, Mehmet Ali; Recepoğlu, Mürşit; Alola, Uju Violet; Alola, Andrew Adewale
Purpose: Motivated by the criticality of transportations system in tourism activities, this study further uncovers the effect of the main transportation modes arising from inbound tourism activities on the ecological footprint across the panel of selected coastline Mediterranean countries (CMC). Design/methodology/approach: The study considers a suitable econometric approach for the case of CMC with the dataset that covers the period 1998–2022. Findings: While the result reveals that all the modes of transportation except air deteriorate environmental sustainability by increasing ecological footprint in the long run, higher impact of environmental woe is associated with the land transportation. Similarly, the findings further show that economic expansion and conventional energy utilization in the examined panel and in each country spurs ecological footprint, thus worsening environmental quality. Meanwhile, for the country-specific observations, ecological footprint is (1) mitigated by tourism activities associated with air, water and land transports in Spain, (2) triggered by tourism activities associated with land transport in Croatia and (3) spurred by land transport in Italy. Originality/value: Policy inference from these results suggests the need to scale up the adoption of a low-emission transportation system in the countries.
- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2025Sustainable Development, Ecological Footprint, Carbon Footprint, Biomimicry, Permaculture, and Proactive Behavior
Şenel Tekin, Perihan; Bekar, Fevziye
The aim of this book chapter is to lay the concepts of sustainable development, ecological footprint, carbon footprint, permaculture and biomimicry, which are thought to complement one another and serve almost the same purpose, on the basis of proactive behaviors. Sustainable development means balancing ecological, social, and economic dimensions and meeting the needs of the present without consuming the resources of future generations. The ecological footprint is an indicator of sustainable development and involves calculations relevant to the world’s energy consumption, capacity and overall biomass efficiency. A carbon footprint is a type of ecological footprint, while biomimicry involves the emulation of nature to create pathways for crafting innovative designs. The discipline of permaculture derives from permanent culture and agriculture and concerns about creating sustainable living spaces. In this regard, sustainability may be ensured with the inclusion of proactive mindsets as opposed to reactive perspectives to facilitate individual ownership of sustainability within social lifestyles and business environments.
- MakaleYalnız künye2025Ecological footprint components and agricultural productivity: Insights from MENA countries
Recepoğlu, Mürşit; Hayaloğlu, Pınar; Cakir, Sümeyra Cay; Artan, Seyfettin; Cakir, Mehmet Ali
The surge in the global population over the past century has highlighted the importance of agricultural production, leading to many studies to boost productivity. Unlike previous studies that primarily explore agricultural productivity growth, this study investigates how the subcomponents of the ecological footprint affect agricultural productivity in MENA countries between 1992 and 2021, identifying which types of environmental pollution have the most significant impact. Driscoll and Kraay (1998) method results show that ecological footprint has a major negative impact on agricultural productivity. Similarly, all ecological footprint components have a negative impact on agricultural productivity. The forest footprint has the highest coefficient magnitude, followed by crop land footprint, carbon footprint, fishing grounds footprint and grazing land footprint. The results have been tested for robustness using the Half-Panel Jackknife test to avoid biased results, and parallel results have been obtained. Finally, the causality between agricultural productivity and explanatory variables has been tested using Dumitrescu and Hurlin (2012) panel causality test. The findings suggest that policymakers may find it more effective to eliminate pollution rather than using additional resources to increase agricultural productivity. This approach allows for the reallocation of resources used in agricultural production to other areas.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Exploring Nursing Students’ Metaphorical Perceptions and Cognitive Structures Related to the Global Climate Crisis's Impact on Nursing
Ediz, Çiçek; Uzun, Sevda
Objective: This study aimed to explore the metaphorical perceptions and cognitive structures of Turkish nursing students related to the impact of the global climate crisis on their profession. Methods: Researchers adopted a qualitative approach centered on metaphor analysis and involved 40 Turkish nursing students enrolled in programs in Türkiye during October 2023. Using metaphor analysis and techniques involving writing and drawing, the study uncovered how these students perceive and cognitively structure the influence of the global climate crisis on their nursing careers. The interview form featured the metaphor expression “The reflection of the global climate crisis on nursing is like … because …,” while the drawing component prompted students to determine their perspectives on the climate crisis's impact on nursing through concept drawings. The research adhered to the COREQ checklist. Results: The study revealed that nursing students generated 22 metaphors each through written and drawing techniques. Written metaphors were grouped into five categories: psychosocial challenges faced by nurses, patient populations, diseases and coping, burdens on the health system, and the growing importance of various fields within nursing. Drawing technique metaphors were grouped into four categories: nurses and the difficulties they face, the impact of the global climate crisis on the world, the impact of the global climate crisis on the healthcare sector, and the roles and responsibilities of nurses. Conclusions: While nursing students expressed diverse opinions, their concerns about the reflection of the global climate crisis on nursing yielded similar emotional responses. Metaphors are mostly focused on psychosocial challenges faced by nurses, the patient population, diseases, and coping mechanisms. The findings underscored nursing students’ concerns about the global climate crisis's impact on both their profession and the broader community.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Investigation of the Dynamic Behavior of Buried Natural Gas Pipe System
Öztürk, Kaşif Furkan
Natural gas pipelines are important infrastructure elements that are often designed to be buried and can cross very long distances, both on the mainland and on the ocean seabed. In this context, researches on the safety of these structures, which are known to cause significant economic losses if damaged, still maintains its importance. From this point of view, the dynamic behavior of a buried pipe system modeled using the equivalent spring-dashpot approach is investigated for three different soil systems and two earthquake records with three different frequency contents. The research shows that while the peak von mises stress of the pipe system can generally decrease depending on decrease in soil stiffness, the peak lateral displacements of the pipe system can generally increase depending on the decrease in soil stiffness. Furthermore, the results point out that the peak von mises stresses and the lateral displacements of the pipe system can significantly increase from high frequency content to low frequency content depending on the frequency content of earthquake.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Eco-Apartheid: Unpacking Environmental Injustice and its Impact on Human Rights
Purba, Tumian Lian Daya; Karimullah, Suud Sarim; Palit, Silvester Magnus Loogman
This study comprehensively examines how existing environmental policies often exacerbate social inequality and neglect the rights of vulnerable communities, particularly minorities, indigenous peoples, and those living below the poverty line. This study adopts a library research method, exploring the concept of eco-apartheid and its implications for human rights through an integrated literature review, combined with a content analysis approach. The results of this study confirm that eco-apartheid reflects structural injustices that violate human rights, particularly the right to a clean and healthy environment. Land grabbing, exploitation of natural resources, and urban segregation widen ecological and social inequalities, which are exacerbated by weak law enforcement and the dominance of corporate interests. The right to a decent and healthy environment has been recognised in international law proceedings, such as UN Resolution No. 76/300 of 2022, the 1972 Stockholm Declaration, and the 1992 Rio Declaration. In the ASEAN region, exclusive development has marginalised poor communities and reinforced eco-apartheid, necessitating a new legal paradigm that places the environment as a subject of human rights protection, with the application of various principles of precaution and vigilance, transparent policy reform, and protection for environmental defenders. Ecologically, just legal excellence is critical for eliminating eco-apartheid and guaranteeing every individual's right to a safe, fair, and sustainable environment.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Future of Clean Cooking Energy Access in Emerging Economies by 2030
Cakir, Mehmet Ali; Unlu, Ramazan; Cakir, Sümeyra Cay; Xanthopoulos, Petros
This study assesses the future of clean energy and technology access for cooking in emerging economic blocs—BRICS, MINT, ASEAN, and MENA—through 2030. Cooking contributes 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with over half of household emissions coming from cooking. Therefore, clean cooking energy is critical for sustainability and human health. The study aims to evaluate the likelihood of achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal of universal clean cooking energy access by 2030 and the 2050 net-zero emissions target. Machine learning techniques, such as support vector regression, gradient boosting, and linear regression, alongside an ensemble approach, provide forecasts for these regions. The findings show a varied outlook. Within ASEAN, two countries are expected to reach 100% clean energy access for cooking by 2030, while two are likely to experience a decline. The MENA region shows stronger progress, with eight countries expected to meet the 2030 target. Among BRICS countries, only India is projected to reach full accessibility, while Russia faces a decline. The MINT countries face challenges, with none expected to meet the target, and Nigeria is projected to experience a decrease in clean energy access. The study concludes that the current trajectory makes achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and the 2050 net-zero emissions target unlikely for these regions. Policymakers must reassess their strategies and learn from successful countries to improve outcomes.
- MakaleYalnız künye2025Impact of erbium doping on critical current density and constituent phase in BSCCO superconductors
Açikel, S.; Cumhur, I.; Öztürk, A.; Başoğlu, M.; Düzgün, I.
This work systematically examines the influence of partial substitution of calcium (Ca) by erbium (Er) on the structural integrity and superconducting performance of Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ (BSCCO) high-temperature superconductors. Samples were synthesized through the conventional solid-state reaction method and characterized via X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, resistivity, and magnetization measurements. Despite the close effective ionic radii of Er and Ca, experimental results revealed that increasing Er content led to a deterioration of the superconducting phase and the emergence of semicon ducting characteristics. Quantitative analyses demonstrated a notable reduction in critical current density (Jc), with undoped BSCCO samples exhibiting approximately 14% higher Jc values under equivalent conditions. These findings suggest that while ionic size considerations may permit Er substitution from a stoichiometric perspective, the structural and superconducting phase stability of the BSCCO matrix is adversely affected by Er incorporation.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric characteristics of the Turkish version of the “Stress Scale for Siblings of Childhood Cancer Patients (SCCP)”. Methods: This study was conducted with 273 siblings aged 11-16 of childhood cancer patients (SCCPs) who were treated in a hospital in the Black Sea Region of Türkiye between March 2022 and April 2024. Data were collected with “The Sociodemographic Information Form” and “SCCP”. The data were examined through descriptive statistics, as well as exploratory and confirmatory factor analyzes. Results: The SCCP Turkish version is a valid and reliable scale consisting of 27 items and six sub-dimensions. The SCCP Turkish version explained 77.676% of the total variance. The SCCP Turkish version was found to be summable according to Tukey's test of additivity (p = 0.334), and the test-retest reliability of the scale was r = 0.864 (p < 0.05). Conclusion: This study indicate that the Turkish version of the SCCP is a valid and reliable instrument for evaluating stress levels in siblings aged 11 to 16. Practice Implications: With SCCP, nurses can determine the stress levels of SCCPs and contribute to the planning of necessary interventions to cope with stress.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Self-Regulation of Eating Behaviors Among Young Women Nurses and Nursing Students: Its Relationship With Eating Habits
Tuncer, Gülsüm Zekiye; Tuncer, Metin
The primary aim of this study is to adapt the Self-Regulation of Eating Behavior Questionnaire (SREBQ) to the Turkish culture among young women nurses and nursing students. The secondary aim is to investigate the factors associated with self-regulation of eating behavior in this population. The sample consisted of 773 young women nurses and nursing students who were included in the study between June and July 2024. In accordance with the first aim of the study, the construct validity of the SREBQ instrument was confirmed through EFA. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the SREBQ was found to be 0.78. There were very low positive correlations between the SREBQ score and the SRS (r = 0.252) and TREQ-CR (r = 0.136) scores, as well as low negative correlations with the TREQ-EE (r = −0.355) and TREQ-UE (r = −0.406) scores (p < 0.001). The 5-item SREBQ has been found to be a valid and reliable instrument for the population of young women nurses and nursing students in the Turkish language. The results indicate that as self-regulation of eating behavior increases in this population, overall self-regulation skills improve, while disordered eating behaviors decrease.
- Derleme MakaleAçık Erişim2025Microplastics in Dairy Products: Occurrence, Characterization, Contamination Sources, Detection Methods, and Future Challenges
Gürmeriç, Hüseyin Ender; Basaran, Burhan
In this study, data from 17 studies reporting the presence of microplastics in milk and dairy products in the literature were examined with a product-based systematic approach. In addition, geographical comparisons were made between different countries. In milk and dairy products, the concentration of microplastics has been reported to exhibit a broad range, extending from non-detectable levels to as high as 10,040 MPs per kilogram, contingent upon the specific product types. Milk powder (especially baby milk powder) stands out as the riskiest product group in terms of microplastic content. Although the sizes and colors of the detected microplastics vary significantly, the fiber form is generally predominant. While polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide and polyester are among the polymers frequently detected, high-temperature-resistant industrial polymers such as polytetrafluoroethylene, polysulfone, polyurethane were also encountered. In addition, the presence of some polymers (such polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane) that are toxicologically risky for human health was reported in the studies. In addition, the study evaluated the chemical, enzymatic and physical methods used for the separation and identification of MPs; the advantages and limitations of FT-IR, Raman and other analysis techniques were revealed. This study reveals that MP contamination in milk and dairy products is a multidimensional problem. The findings show that milk and dairy products are highly susceptible to plastic contamination at every stage of production.
