- MakaleYalnız künye2013Scopus SJRQ1The effects of high temperature on mechanical properties of cementitious composites reinforced with polymeric fibers
Çavdar, Ahmet
Polymeric fibers are cheap and popular materials used in the concrete industry, and they may improve the mechanical properties of cementitious composites under high temperature. In this study, three different types of polymeric fibers - Copolymer Polypropylene/polyethylene (CPP), Homopolymer Polypropylene (HPP), and Aramid (AR) - are added to cement mortars with the aim to investigate their mechanical contributions to mortars under high temperature, comparatively. These fibers are added into mortars in five different ratios (0.0%, 0.3%, 0.6%, 0.9% and 1.2%) by volume. The mortars are subjected to following temperatures: 21 °C (normal conditions), 100 °C (oven dry), 450 °C, 650 °C and 850 °C. It is concluded that polymeric fibers used in this study contribute to the flexural strength of mortars under normal dry conditions (100 °C). This effect continues clearly up to 450 °C and polymeric fibers show effects on flexural strength especially at 450 °C. Each fiber shows the best performance different addition ratio when flexural and compressive strength are taken into consideration at the same time under high temperature. The highest increase in flexural strength and the lowest decrease in compressive strength are at 0.3-0.9% fiber addition ratio for HPP, at 0.3-0.6% fiber addition ratio for CPP and at 0.9% fiber addition ratio for AR for every temperature.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2013Scopus SJRQ1A study on 3-D stress distributions in the bi-adhesively bonded T-joints
Akpinar, Salih; Aydin, Murat Demir; Özel, Adnan
In this study, the normal (σx,. σy,. σz) and shear stress (τxy,. τyz,. τzx) distributions occurring in a bi-adhesively bonded T-joint with was investigated via a non-linear three dimensional finite element analysis. For this purpose, first of all, using 2024-T3 aluminum alloy as the adherend and the support, a two-part paste (DP 460) and a film type (SBT 9244) as adhesive, two different types of T-joint samples (single-adhesively bonded T-joint and bi-adhesively bonded T-joint) were produced for experimental studies. After experimental studies on the three different T-joint types were conducted, stress analyses in the T-joints were performed with a three-dimensional finite element analysis by considering the geometrical non-linearity and the material non-linearities of the adhesive (DP460 and SBT9244) and adherend (AA2024-T3). Finally, for a given adherend, the lower the stiffness of the adhesive used in the overlap, the lower the stress concentration, leading to potentially higher joint strength. The use of relatively low stiffness adhesives at the ends of the overlap in a bi-adhesive can decrease the stress concentration and, therefore, potentially lead to higher joint strength.

Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate anti-carbonic anhydrase antibodies (anti-CA I and CA II antibodies) in the sera of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Methods: In this study serum anti-CA I and II antibody levels of age and BMI matching fifty women with PCOS and fifty women without PCOS on day three of menstrual cycle were assessed with an ELISA method previously developed by Hosoda and modified by Alver et al. Results: The mean serum anti-CA I antibody levels were significantly higher in women with PCOS and anti-CA II antibody levels were not significantly different in women with PCOS compared with control subjects. For serum anti-CA I antibody, the absorbance higher than 0.484 (mean + 3SD of control subjects) was taken as positive, Anti-CA I antibody was detected in 13 of 50 patients with PCOS (26%). Considering serum anti-CA II antibody, the absorbance higher than 0.654 (mean + 3SD of control subjects) was taken as positive. Anti--CA II antibody was detected in 2 of 50 patients with PCOS (4%). All patients with positive anti-CA II antibody also had positive anti-CA I antibody. Autoantibodies specifically reactive to CA I were found to be present at a higher frequency than CA II in the serum of subjects with PCOS in the present study. Conclusion: The results may suggest that autoimmune responses against CA I may be involved in the pathogenesis of PCOS.

- MakaleYalnız künye2013Scopus SJRQ13-D non-linear stress analysis on the adhesively bonded T-joints with embedded supports
Akpinar, Salih; Aydin, Murat Demir; Temiz, Şemsettin; Özel, Adnan
In the present study, it is aimed to compare mechanical behaviors of T-joint types with embedded and non-embedded supports subjected to bending moment. For this purpose, after experimental studies on the two different T-joint types were conducted, stress analyses in the T-joints were performed with a three-dimensional finite element method by considering the geometrical non-linearity and the material non-linearities of the adhesive (DP460) and adherend (AA2024-T3). Finally, stress analyses and experimental results show that the variation of the geometry of the bonding zone, e.g., embedding the supports, would change the stress distributions and strength of the joint. Additionally, it is seen that T-joints with embedded supports carry 30% more load than T-joints with non-embedded supports although their bending stiffnesses decrease.

Vural, Alaaddin
The concentrations of heavy elements were studied in the soils and plants of Robinia pseudoacacia, along a highway passing through Gümüşhane City Center, Turkey. The aim of this study is to understand heavy metal accumulation due to dense traffic load, industrialization, urbanization, and/or geological features of the region. The assessment of the heavy metal accumulation of the soils is based on the Geoaccumulation Index and Enrichment Factor, and that of plants, is based on the Bioaccumulation Factor. According to the Geoaccumulation Index, soil samples were uncontaminated for Cr, Co, Cu, Rb, and Sr elements, uncontaminated to moderately contaminated for V, Ni, Ba, and Zn, and moderately to heavily-heavy contaminated for As. The contamination of soil samples changes from moderate-heavy-extremely contaminated degree for Pb. According to the Enrichment Factor; soil samples show, no enrichment-moderately-severe enrichment for V. Considering the Zn element, enrichment is in minor to severe enrichment. On the other hand, element enrichment is severe to very severe enrichment for As and that of Pb is minor to an extremely severe enrichment level. The data revealed that the soil in the study area is significantly contaminated for Zn, As, and Pb. Also, concentration levels of Cu, Fe, Mo, Ni, Sr, and Zn in the shoots of Robinia pseudoacacia at some location were determined as above and/or exceeded the upper limit of the normal range.

Tufekci, Mehmet; Bulut, Volkan Numan; Elvan, Hamide; Ozdes, Duygu; Soylak, Mustafa; Duran, Celal
A new, simple, and rapid separation and preconcentration procedure, for determination of Pb(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), and Co(II) ions in environmental real samples, has been developed. The method is based on the combination of coprecipitation of analyte ions by the aid of the Mo(VI)-diethyldithiocarbamate- (Mo(VI)-DDTC) precipitate and flame atomic absorption spectrometric determinations. The effects of experimental conditions like pH of the aqueous solution, amounts of DDTC and Mo(VI), standing time, centrifugation rate and time, sample volume, etc. and also the influences of some foreign ions were investigated in detail on the quantitative recoveries of the analyte ions. The preconcentration factors were found to be 150 for Pb(II), Zn(II) and Co(II), and 200 for Cd(II) ions. The detection limits were in the range of 0.1-2.2 μg L-1 while the relative standard deviations were found to be lower than 5 % for the studied analyte ions. The accuracy of the method was checked by spiked/recovery tests and the analysis of certified reference material (CRM TMDW-500 Drinking Water). The procedure was successfully applied to seawater and stream water as liquid samples and baby food and dried eggplant as solid samples in order to determine the levels of Pb(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), and Co(II) ions.

Ersoy, Hakan; Betül Karsli, Melek; Çellek, Seda; Kul, Bilgehan; Baykan, Idris; Parsons, Robert L.
Costly and time consuming testing techniques and the difficulties in providing undisturbed samples for these tests have led researchers to estimate strength parameters of soils with simple index tests. However, the paper focuses on estimation of strength parameters of soils as a function of the index properties. Analytical hierarchy process and multiple regression analysis based methodology were performed on datasets obtained from soil tests on 41 samples in Tertiary volcanic regolith. While the hierarchy model focused on determining the most important index properties affecting on strength parameters, regression analysis established meaningful relationships between strength parameters and index properties. The negative polynomial correlations between the friction angle and plasticity properties, and the positive exponential relations between the cohesion and plasticity properties were determined. These relations are characterized by a regression coefficient of 0.80. However, Terzaghi bearing capacity formulas were used to test the model. It is important to see whether there is any statistically significant relation between the calculated and the observed bearing capacity values for model testing. Based on the model, the positive linear correlation characterized by the regression coefficient of 0.86 were determined between bearing capacity values obtained by direct and indirect methods.

Following Grossman and Katz (Non-Newtonian Calculus, 1972), we construct the sets B(A) and C(A) of geometric complex-valued bounded and continuous functions, where A denotes the compact subset of the complex plane C. We show that the sets B(A) and C(A) of complex-valued bounded and continuous functions form a vector space with respect to the addition and scalar multiplication in the sense of multiplicative calculus. Finally, we prove that B(A) and C(A) are complete metric spaces.

Eyuboglu, Yener; Dudas, Francis O.; Santosh, M.; Yi, Keewook; Kwon, Sanghoon; Akaryali, Enver
High-silica adakites intrude the Kop ultramafic massif in the eastern Pontide orogenic belt of NE Turkey. These dominantly dacitic to rhyodacitic plagioclase porphyries form clusters of small intrusions. U-Pb dating of zircons from two intrusions yields ages between 52 and 59 Ma. The best-constrained crystallization age is 55.83 +/- 0.04 Ma, indicating that these are the oldest adakitic rocks of the eastern Pontides. The rocks show geochemical signatures typical of adakites. The absence of systematic geochemical variation within the adakite suite indicates a subordinate role for fractional crystallization and binary mixing, and suggests that individual intrusions may represent separate, small batches of magma. Modeling of partial melting suggests that the degree of melting was 5-20%, that the residues after melting likely contained garnet, clinopyroxene, and rutile, and that plagioclase was either absent or totally consumed during partial melting. The most likely source compositions had large-ion lithophile elements >10 times, and heavy rare earth elements <10 times, chondritic concentrations. Modeled bulk distribution coefficients indicate that the adakites were generated as silicic magmas, and are not derived by fractional crystallization from basaltic or andesitic parental melts. Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopic data indicate at least three isotopically distinct sources, one of which is depleted mantle. The other components include upper crust (possibly a mixture of subducted sediment and Hercynian continental basement rocks) and a component that may include both lower crust and sublithospheric mantle. These adakites are unique among the late Cretaceous and Cenozoic igneous rocks of the eastern Pontides in having a large proportion of the depleted mantle component. The prominent role of the depleted mantle in their petrogenesis suggests that the adakites may be related to a slab window in a south-directed subduction zone. Tonnes of waste are generated during tea production in Turkey, one of the black tea producing countries in the world. These wastes are not used for any purposes throughout industrial sector. The objective of this study is to bring in economic value to waste materials by producing activated carbons from wastes of a tea plant and to characterize their physicochemical properties. Three types of activated carbons were produced by chemical activation using zinc chloride from tea industry wastes (TIW). Mesoporous structure and surface area rise as the ratio of ZnCl2/TIW increases. When the ratios of ZnCl2/TIW were selected as 1/2:1, 1:1, and 2:1, mesoporous activated carbons are found in the percentages of 10.9%, 39.9% and 77.7% with BET surface areas of 706, 1066 and 1141 m(2) g(-1), respectively. The resultant activated carbons were characterized by analyses of proximate-ultimate, FT-IR, SEM, TGA, methylene blue-iodine numbers, and surface functional groups. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Güllüpunar, Hasan
A great deal of research has been done relevant to the effects of canvassing implementations on election campaigns. The ways of canvassing such as turnout and persuasion have been emphasized on these campaigns. In general, canvassing is possibly thought to play an important role on the turnout of elections in the low-turnout districts. Likewise, canvassing method might be effective for persuading the voters in the high-turnout districts in the countries like Turkey. This present paper deals with the implementation criteria of canvassing method, whether the methods of canvassing are influential on the voters’ preferences or not, and how the voters perceive the images of candidates that make use of the canvassing in their election campaigns. In this study, three factors (impact, implementation and image) come out regarding the method of canvassing. Finally, canvassing method is a crucial element in terms of voters’ preferences in the election campaigns in the light of the variables in these mentioned factors according to the data analysis.
