Determination of stand structure in even-aged oriental beech forests in Turkey; [Determinación de la estructura de rodales de Fagus orientalis coetáneos en Turquía]

Kahriman, Aydın; Altun, Lokman; Güvendi, Engin

This study aimed at developing a stand yield model for even-aged and pure Oriental beech (Fagus orientalis) stands in Sinop Province, located in the north of Turkey. The data used in this study were obtained from 238 sample plots. The sample plots are 24–131 years of stand age range, 19.0–35.9 m of site index range, and 2.2–10.8 of stand density range (relative density index). With the generated equation systems, stand age, site index and density of the three main factors in Oriental beech stands, including the effects of individual, dual and triple factor interactions on the stands were numerically determined. As for even-aged Oriental beech stands, the main stand volume values increase depending on age, site index and density. The number of stems per hectare decreases as the stand grows older, and site index rises; the number, however, increases in parallel with stand density. The current annual volume increment reaches a peak at 30-35 years at all site index groups and density levels, and begins to fall afterwards. Mean annual volume increment peaks up at 65-75 years at all site index classes and density levels, before beginning to decline. The results were in arrangement with the acknowledged growth rules. Stand yield models were assessed as Density-Variable Yield Table used for estimation of the remaining, removal and total stands.

Assessing the effects of long-term recreational activities on landscape changes in Abant Natural Park, Turkey

Çakir, Günay; Müderrisoğlu, Haldun; Kaya, Latif Gürkan

Natural, protected areas offer many possibilities for recreation in rural areas such as camping, one of the most popular activities. The system established for protected areas in Turkey aims to provide a foundation for conserving areas for recreation. One such area, Abant Natural Park, is convenient for visits from Turkey’s two most populated metropolitan areas, Istanbul and Ankara. It also attracts tourists from other regions and countries. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the vegetation loss and land cover changes due to picnic/camping, transhumance, and construction over 40 years (1966–2004) in the park using data on visitor numbers, vegetation patches, corridors and connectivity. For evaluating landscape variables, remote sensing data and aerial photos were used. When aerial photos were imported into the ERDAS Imagine program, ground control points identified, and individual images orthorectified, land degradation was not found in the use of camping areas. Moreover, manmade areas (road, car park and hotel) observably increased, thus decreasing the forest lands. The findings show that the land use types that have had the greatest ecological impact are transhumance and construction of hotels, which also require infrastructure development. The intensity of the ecological effects mandates precautions to lessen the impacts and the need for continuing assessment to ensure sustainable use of the area.

Spatial Decision Support System is indispensable to develop spatial planning alternative by integrating spatial parameters into forest management plans using ecosystem based multiple use forest management planning concept (EBMUFM). Spatial forest planning provides several opportunities to decision makers to generate spatially implementable harvest schedules and perform spatial analyses as part of integrated planning. This paper presents the role and importance of spatial forest planning in forest management, and evaluates it in the context of Turkish forestry. Basic concepts related to spatial forest planning are explained. Some important intuitive decision support techniques (modeling techniques) widely used in spatial forest management planning were introduced. Further, spatial decision support systems for forest management planning developed in various countries were provided. Finally, it is concluded that spatial forest planning is extremely needed in EBMUFM.

Effect of applications of organic solid cattle manure on Hungarian vetch and barley intercropping mixtures grown on soils of different depths

    Yolcu, H.

Sloping fields on soils of shallow depth to tillage are commonly left uncultivated in many parts of the world. This study was conducted to compare the effects on morphological traits, dry-matter (DM) yield, legume ratio (LR), crude protein content (CP), crude protein yield (CP yield) and mineral concentrations (N, P, K, S, Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Na, B and Zn) of Hungarian vetch (Vicia pannonica Crantz.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) grown in intercropping mixtures in response to three rates of organic solid cattle manure application (M0: 0, M1: 10, M2: 20 t ha-1). Experimentation was conducted on soils of two different soil depths [shallow (8-12 cm; low-medium erosion risk) and normal soil depth (18-22 cm; no erosion risk)] on a sloping field in the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 growing seasons at Gumushane, Turkey. Herbage harvested on the shallow depth area had 22-73% less DM yield, 14-72% less CP yield, 6-9% greater CP content and generally higher minerals contents than herbage from the normal soil depth area. Cattle manure applications increased DM yield by about 23%, increased CP content and CP yield, and also increased the contents of most minerals in herbage of the intercropping mixtures, relative to the control, averaged over the two soil depths. It is suggested that, for areas with shallow soil depths that are prone to erosion, plant cover should be used for forage production, and that fertilization with solid cattle manure at 20 t ha-1 can support production of quality forage of acceptable DM yield.

Assessment of metal pollution associated with an alteration area: Old Gümüşhane, NE Black Sea

    Vural, Alaaddin

The objective of this study was to determine the potential environmental risks associated with the Kirkpavli (Old Gümüşhane in northern Turkey) alteration area by quantifying pollution in soil. The Kirkpavli (Old Gümüşhane) alteration area is situated at the south of the deposit with the same name of gold-silver-bearing lead, zinc, and copper in the southern part of the Black Sea Tectonic Unit (Eastern Pontides). In this study, 28 soil samples acquired from the alteration area were analyzed for contents of some main elements including lead (Pb), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), and arsenic (As). Contents of the elements in the area were determined, and high values were obtained such as 1,171 mg/kg for As, 12.4 mg/kg for Cd, 77.3 mg/kg for Co, 341 mg/kg for Cu, 1,172 mg/kg for Mn, 51.9 mg/kg for Ni, 3,725 mg/kg for Pb, and 880 mg/kg for Zn. Soil contamination was appraised on the basis of Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), Enrichment Factor (EF), Pollution Index, and Integrated Pollution Index. The calculated results of Igeo, EF, and PI of the elements can be shown in descending order of parameters as As > Pb > Cd > Zn > Cu > Co > Mn. The parameters for some of these elements indicated extremely high contamination (Igeo > 5), extremely high enrichment (EF > 40), and high pollution (PI > 3). High Igeo, EF, and PI values of As, Pb, and Cd in the soil samples mean that soil pollution is typically associated with alteration area. Considering its location and the results of this study, the Kirkpavli alteration area is a significant source of pollution and may have ecotoxicological effects on terrestrial, groundwater, and aquatic ecosystems in the region.

Controlling spatial forest structure with spatial simulation in forest management planning: A case study from Turkey

Kadiogullari, Ali Ihsan; Baskent, Emin Zeki; Keles, Sedat; Bingöl, Özkan

Decision Support Systems (DSS) is widely used to develop spatially explicit forest management plans through the integration of spatial parameters. As a part of this study, a simulation-based spatial DSS, the ETÇAPSimülasyon program was developed and tested in a case study area. The system has the capability to control the spatial structure of forests based on a geodatabase. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) was used to generate the database, using spatial parameters including opening size, block size and green-up delay in addition to other attribute data such as the empirical yield table and the product assortment table. Based on the simulation technique, a spatial forest management model was developed to link strategic planning with tactical planning on a stand base and to present results with a number of performance indicators. One important component of the model determined all spatial characteristics with spatial parameters and patch descriptions. A stand growth and yield simulation model (BARSM) based on the relationship between current and optimal basal area development was also generated to project future stand characteristics and analyze the effects of various silvicultural treatments. A number of spatial forest management strategies were developed to generate spatially implementable harvest schedules and perform spatial analyses. The forest management concept was enhanced by employing a spatial simulation technique to help analyzing the ecosystem structure. Spatial characteristics for an on- The-ground forest management plan were then developed. The model was tested in Altinoluk Planning Unit (APU) using a spatial simulation technique based on various spatial parameters. The results indicated that the spatial model was able to satisfy the spatial restriction requirements of the forest management plan.

Biogeochemical characteristics of Rosa canina grown in hydrothermally contaminated soils of the Gümüşhane Province, Northeast Turkey

    Vural, Alaaddin

Kırkpavli alteration area (Gümüşhane, Northeast Turkey) is contaminated by heavy metals such as Cd, Pb, As, Cu and Zn. The quantity of accumulation of heavy metal trace elements and macroelements in 32 leaves of Rosa canina of the Kırkpavli alteration area has been studied within the scope of geochemical studies. Element contents of samples were assessed using various parameters including descriptive statistics, factor analysis, correlation coefficients and bioaccumulation factor. Concentrations were detected in the acceptable range for Mo, Cu, Pb, Ni, As, Cd, Sb, P, Ti, Na, Se and Sn. Concentrations of Co, Mn, Ba and Hg were detected close to the acceptable values, whereas Zn, Fe, Sr, V, Ca, Cr, Mg, B, Al, K, W, Sc, Cs and Rb concentrations were detected above the acceptable values. Principal component analysis was used to identify the elements that have a close relationship with each other and/or similar origins. It has been concluded that Zn, Cu, As and Mo content of the plant were related to hydrothermal alteration process and they behaved together, whereas Mn and Fe were especially products of weathering conditions, also behaved together. In terms of macroelements, Ca, Mg and Na had similar behaviour, while P and K had the same correlation.

Estimating aboveground biomass using landsat TM imagery: A case study of Anatolian Crimean pine forests in Turkey

    Günlü, A.; Ercanli, İ.; Başkent, E.Z.; Çakır, G.

Forests play an important role in carbon circulation, and the productivity of forest ecosystems can be evaluated by evaluating its biomass. Evaluation of biomass aids the determination and understanding of changes in forest ecosystems. Because of the limitations of ground measurements of biomass, in recent times, satellite images have been broadly applied to estimate aboveground biomass (AGB). The objective of this study is to examine the relationships between AGB and individual band reflectance values and ten Vegetation Indices (VIs) obtained from a Landsat TM satellite image for a Anatolian pine forests in northwestern Turkey. Multiple regression analysis is utilized to predict the AGB. The AGB model using TM 1 and TM 2 had an adjusted R2of 0.465. Another AGB model using Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and Normalized Difference 57 (ND57) had an adjusted R2 of 0.606. Our results reveal that VIs present better estimation of AGB in Anatolian pine forests as compared to individual band reflectance values.

Trace/heavy metal accumulation in soil and in the shoots of acacia tree, Gümüşhane-Turkey

    Vural, Alaaddin

In this study, heavy metal/trace element accumulation was investigated in soils along the road passing through Gümüshane city center and shoots of 1-2 years of acacia trees (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) grown in these soils. Heavy metal contents in soils and plants were analyzed by Enrichment Factor (EF), Geo-accumulation index (Igeo) parameters, and by Bio Accumulation Factor (BAF), respectively. According to geo-accumulation index (Igeo) data, it is seen that the soil was unpolluted in terms of Cr, Co, Cu, Rb, Sr; unpolluted to moderately polluted in terms of V, Ni and Zn; moderate to excessively polluted in terms of As, and moderate to excessively polluted in terms of Pb. According to EF parameters, on the other hand, it is observed that the soil was non to slightly enriched in terms of Cr, Co, Sr and Ba; non to moderately enriched in terms of Ni and Cu; slightly to significantly enriched in terms of Zn; significant to very highly enriched in terms of As and slightly to over excessively enriched in terms of Pb. Although trace/heavy metal contents of acacia shoots were usually within normal values for acacia, it was determined that Cu, Fe, Mo, Ni, Sr and Zn concentrations were within and/or above upper limits of normal values in certain sampling points.

Assessment of heavy metal accumulation in the roadside soil and plants of Robinia pseudoacacia, in Gumushane, Northeastern Turkey; [Yol kenari{dotless}ndaki topraklarda ve Robinia pseudoacacia bitkilerindeki aǧi{dotless}r metal birikiminin deǧerlendirilmesi, Gümüşhane, kuzeydoǧu Türkiye]

    Vural, Alaaddin

The concentrations of heavy elements were studied in the soils and plants of Robinia pseudoacacia, along a highway passing through Gümüşhane City Center, Turkey. The aim of this study is to understand heavy metal accumulation due to dense traffic load, industrialization, urbanization, and/or geological features of the region. The assessment of the heavy metal accumulation of the soils is based on the Geoaccumulation Index and Enrichment Factor, and that of plants, is based on the Bioaccumulation Factor. According to the Geoaccumulation Index, soil samples were uncontaminated for Cr, Co, Cu, Rb, and Sr elements, uncontaminated to moderately contaminated for V, Ni, Ba, and Zn, and moderately to heavily-heavy contaminated for As. The contamination of soil samples changes from moderate-heavy-extremely contaminated degree for Pb. According to the Enrichment Factor; soil samples show, no enrichment-moderately-severe enrichment for V. Considering the Zn element, enrichment is in minor to severe enrichment. On the other hand, element enrichment is severe to very severe enrichment for As and that of Pb is minor to an extremely severe enrichment level. The data revealed that the soil in the study area is significantly contaminated for Zn, As, and Pb. Also, concentration levels of Cu, Fe, Mo, Ni, Sr, and Zn in the shoots of Robinia pseudoacacia at some location were determined as above and/or exceeded the upper limit of the normal range.

Factors of land use/cover change: A case study from Turkey

Sivrikaya, Fatih; Çakir, Günay; Akay, Abdullah Emin

Land use/cover change impacts ecosystem services and functions such as forest health, biodiversity, and water production. Monitoring and assessing land use/cover changes provides an effective and accurate evaluation of human impact on the forest ecosystems. This study aims to determine spatial and temporal changes in land use/cover at a particular time period in a typical forest ecosystem of Turkey using geographical information systems (GIS). Specifically, the objective of this study is to analyze the main factors driving land use/cover change and the impacts of such changes in local and global perspective. Results showed that the total forested areas decreased from 5089 ha (41% of the study area) to 4426 ha (36% of the study area) during a 21 year period, which figures a net decrease of 663 ha (5%) forest areas and the average annual deforestation rate was 32 ha. Conifer forest (161 ha) completely transitioned to other cover types over 21-year period. Three major factors including distance from villages, distance from roads, and ground elevation were considered in evaluating forest disturbance. The results showed that these factors influence the reforestation/deforestation rates. Besides, forest disturbance was found to be closely related to distance from villages, distance from roads, and elevation.
