- MakaleAçık Erişim2025An Examination of Relationships Between Postural Habits and Awareness of Fatigue and Musculoskeletal Discomfort in Nurses
Tuncer, Metin; Tuncer, Gülsüm Zekiye; Turan, Şeyma; Khorshtd, Leyla
Introduction: Prolonged fatigue, caused by the hospital's demanding workload and physical demands, can increase strain on the musculoskeletal system, leading to musculoskeletal issues that may negatively impact nurses' job performance and quality of life. High postural awareness, on the other hand, can help nurses develop correct posture and movement habits, reducing the risk of experiencing discomfort, thus preserving their physical health and supporting workforce sustainability. Therefore, it is of particular importance to determine the relationship of postural awareness to fatigue and musculoskeletal discomfort in nurses working in a hospital environment with heavy working conditions and many ergonomic risks. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the postural habits, awareness, occupational fatigue levels and musculoskeletal disorders of nurses working in hospitals and to examine the relationships between these factors. Method: This study used a quantitative cross-sectional design. The study sample consisted of 132 nurses working in a hospital in Türkiye. The data for the study were collected between July and October 2023 using the Occupational Fatigue Exhaustion/Recovery Scale (OFER), Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire (CMDQ) and Postural Habits and Awareness Scale (PHAS). Results: A significant positive, low-level correlation was found between the Recovery subscale of the OFER scale and the Postural Habits subscale of the PHAS scale (r = 0.277, p < 0.05). A significant negative, moderate-level correlation was observed between the Chronic Fatigue subscale of the OFER scale and the Postural Habits subscale of the PHAS scale (r = −0.311, p < 0.001). Additionally, a significant negative, moderate-level correlation was found between the Acute Fatigue subscale of the OFER scale and the Postural Habits subscale of the PHAS scale (r = −0.326, p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study found that as nurses' correct postural habits improved, both acute and chronic fatigue decreased, whereas recovery increased. It is suggested that interventions aimed at enhancing postural awareness and promoting correct postural habits in nurses may also positively influence occupational fatigue and exhaustion.

Atasayar, Belgin Şen; Emirza, Elif Güzide; Uzun, Sevda
Background: Nurses working in intensive care units experience insomnia and accompanying psychosocial problems due to working conditions. Aim: This study explores with a phenomenological approach the psychosocial problems experienced by intensive care nurses regarding sleep patterns within the scope of working conditions. Study Design: In this phenomenological study, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 16 nurses working in the surgical intensive care unit of a state hospital in Türkiye. Criterion sampling method, one of the purposive sampling methods, was used to reach the sample group. Researchers' interviews continued until they reached data saturation. All interviews were recorded on a voice recorder after obtaining the necessary permissions from the nurses and then transcribed. The study data were evaluated using thematic analysis. The current manuscript was reported following the COREQ checklist. Results: Data analysis revealed three main themes (how working as an intensive care nurse changes sleep patterns, the relationship between shift work, work performance, patient care and how working as an intensive care nurse changes individual life and coping strategies) and nine subthemes (mental, physical, social, work performance, patient care, nutrition, family life, social life and coping). Conclusion: The study's findings revealed that nurses working in intensive care experienced psychosocial difficulties related to sleep patterns and had trouble coping. In particular, it was determined that sleep problems of intensive care nurses cause difficulties in family life, nutrition and social life. It is recommended that the number of personnel in workplaces be increased, overtime hours should be limited, and professional development and training on the importance of sleep for all nurses should be provided. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Nurses working in intensive care units may experience psychosocial problems due to working conditions, which may negatively change their coping skills. Therefore, organizing the working conditions of nurses positively changes their coping skills.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Effects of Temperature and Time on the Diffusion Bonding of 316L Stainless Steel and H13 Hot Work Tool Steel
Aydın, Kemal; Yıldırım, Mehmet Serkan; Kaya, Yakup
This study examines the diffusion bonding of 316 L stainless steel and H13 hot work tool steel, aiming to optimize process parameters and assess the resulting microstructural and mechanical properties. Both materials were bonded at varying temperatures (700, 750, and 850 °C) and times (15, 30, and 60 min). The joints are analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to evaluate interfacial morphology, chemical composition, and phase formation. Microhardness measurements indicate an increase in hardness from the 316 L side to the H13 side, suggesting intermetallic phase formation. Shear strength tests show the highest strength at 850 °C for 30 min, with longer times leading to strength reduction due to brittle intermetallic compounds. SEM analysis reveals improved bonding interfaces with fewer voids at higher temperatures and longer times, but the Kirkendall effect causes void formation, negatively impacting mechanical properties. XRD confirms α-Fe and γ-Ni phases, with Fe3C forming at 850 °C for 60 min. This study underscores the importance of process parameters in optimizing joint properties and minimizing brittle phase formation, providing insights for industrial applications requiring robust and corrosion-resistant joints.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Evaluation of Antioxidant and Enzyme Inhibition Properties of Siran Propolis: Correlations With Phenolic Content Determined by LC–MS/MS
Balci, Neslihan; Aslan, Kubra; Erturk, Adem; Gulcin, Ilhami
This study evaluates the antioxidant activity, enzyme inhibition potential, and phenolic composition of ethanolic Siran propolis extract. Antioxidant capacity was measured using reducing power (CUPRAC, FRAP, and Fe3+-reducing) and radical scavenging (DPPH·, ABTS·+, and DMPD·+) assays. The extract showed strong reducing ability, surpassing standard antioxidants in CUPRAC and FRAP assays, correlating with high ferulic acid (40.40 mg/g) and p-coumaric acid (88.60 mg/g) levels identified by LC–MS/MS. While it demonstrated notable DPPH· scavenging (IC50: 30.14 μg/mL), ABTS·+ activity was weaker (IC50: 272.44 μg/mL). Enzyme inhibition assays indicated effective inhibition of α-glycosidase, AChE (IC50: 2.15 μg/mL), hCA I, and hCA II. Notably, AChE inhibition was stronger than the standard tacrine inhibitor (IC50: 8.82 μg/mL), suggesting neuroprotective potential. The observed bioactivities are attributed to synergistic effects of phenolic acids and flavonoids, including quercetin, luteolin, taxifolin, and resveratrol. These findings highlight Siran propolis as a promising natural antioxidant and enzyme inhibitor source with potential therapeutic applications and food formulations.
- MakaleYalnız künye2025ChatGPT-4 in Nursing Research: A Methodological Evaluation of Bias Risk in Randomized Controlled Trials
Tuncer, Metin; Tuncer, Gülsüm Zekiye
Background: Conducting bias assessments in systematic reviews is a time-consuming process that involves subjective judgments. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to perform these assessments can potentially save time and enhance consistency. Nevertheless, the efficacy of AI technologies in conducting bias assessments remains inadequately explored. Aim: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of ChatGPT-4o in assessing bias using the revised Cochrane RoB2 tool, focusing on randomized controlled trials in nursing. Methods: ChatGPT-4o was provided with the RoB2 assessment guide in the form of a PDF document and instructed to perform bias assessments for the 80 open-access RCTs included in the study. The results of the bias assessments conducted by ChatGPT-4o for each domain were then compared with those of the meta-analysis authors using Cohen's weighted kappa analysis. Results: Weighted Cohen's kappa values showed better agreement in bias in the measurement of the outcome (D4, 0.22) and bias arising from the randomization process (D1, 0.20), while negative values in bias due to missing outcome data (D3, −0.12) and bias in the selection of the reported result (D5, −0.09) indicated poor agreement. The highest accuracy was observed in D5 (0.81), and the lowest in D1 (0.60). F1 scores were highest in bias due to deviations from intended interventions (D2, 0.74) and lowest in D3 (0.00) and D5 (0.00). Specificity was higher in D5 (0.93) and D3 (0.82), while sensitivity and precision were low in these domains. Conclusions: The agreement between ChatGPT-4o and the meta-analysis studies in the same RCT assessments is generally low. This indicates that ChatGPT-4o requires substantial enhancements before it can be used as a reliable tool for bias risk assessments. Clinical Relevance: The AI–based tools have the potential to expedite bias assessment in systematic reviews. However, this study demonstrates that ChatGPT-4o, in its current form, lacks sufficient consistency, indicating that such tools should be integrated cautiously and used under continuous human oversight, particularly in evidence-based evaluations that inform clinical decision-making.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Novel Sulfonylhydrazones With Sulfonate Ester Framework: Promising Dual Inhibitors of AChE and hCAs
Öztürk, Cansu; Balci, Neslihan; Aslan, Osman Nuri; Kalay, Erbay
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects millions of individuals worldwide. Treatment strategies for AD vary depending on cognitive and behavioral symptoms, with cholinergic replacement therapy using acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors being one of the primary approaches. Recent studies have also identified human carbonic anhydrases (hCAs) as significant therapeutic targets for AD, offering new opportunities for the development of innovative treatments. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors have been shown to prevent early mitochondrial damage and inhibit H2O2 production, thereby reducing amyloid plaque formation. Building on the promising potential of hydrazones particularly sulfonyl hydrazones as anticholinesterase agents, we synthesized 12 novel chlorine-substituted sulfonyl hydrazone compounds containing aryl sulfonate ester groups. These compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory effects on AChE, hCA I, and hCA II enzymes. The synthesized compounds exhibited low nanomolar inhibitory activity, with Ki values ranging from 9.58 ± 2.22 to 104.04 ± 23.82 nM for AChE, 9.12 ± 2.21 to 477.63 ± 218.52 nM for hCA I, and 17.54 ± 7.74 to 564.62 ± 213.98 nM for hCA II. Notably, compound 6 showed strong inhibitory activity against hCA I (Ki = 9.12 ± 2.21 nM; acetazolamide (AZA) = 26.54 ± 3.11 nM) and hCA II (Ki = 17.54 ± 7.74 nM; AZA = 21.73 ± 2.42 nM), whereas compound 4 exhibited superior AChE inhibition (Ki = 9.58 ± 2.22 nM; TAC = 23.12 ± 2.05 nM). The chemical structures of the synthesized compounds were characterized using advanced spectroscopic techniques, including FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy.

Çetin, Gökhan; Ünker, Faruk
A two-wheeled robot has high maneuverability and can spin around with a high velocity but is prone to roll over under a recoil force. Because the wheels are only used to control the maneuver speed of the robot. However, a two-wheeled robot using a gyroscope does not need the control of the wheels and can maintain the stability of the robot under a recoil force during maneuvers even if the gimbal of the gyroscope is not controlled by a torque. In this study, the equations of motion of the gyroscopic robot are derived via Lagrangian equations, and the balancing performance of the uncontrolled gyroscope is simulated via Matlab to determine a desired configuration for mechatronics system design. Then, a linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) is implemented to the chosen control moment gyroscope (CMG) configuration and compared in simulations of RecurDyn. LQR controller was used to prevent oscillating motions of double CMGs under the recoil force of a weapon. The simulation results showed that the gyroscopic two-wheeled robot is improved using an LQR controller and powerfully balanced in static with excellent performance.

Parlak, Mahmut Ekrem; Uzuner, Kubra; Ozdemir, Sebahat; Kirac Demirel, Fatma Tuba; Dundar, Ayse Neslihan; Sahin, Oya Irmak; Dagdelen, Adnan Fatih; Odabas, Halil Ibrahim; Saricaoglu, Furkan Turker
This study aimed to enhance the oxygen barrier properties of polylactic acid (PLA) film, a biodegradable packaging material with high oxygen permeability (OP). Bi-layer films were produced by coating thermoplastic starch (TPS) onto PLA films in various ratios while maintaining constant film thickness. The mechanical, optical, barrier, thermal, hydrophobicity, moisture sorption, and microstructural properties of the films were analyzed. Increasing the TPS ratio elevated moisture content (MC), water uptake, solubility, and opacity while enhancing UV barrier properties. TPS coating reduced tensile and burst strength but increased the burst deformation of the bi-layer films. Bi-layer film production resulted in a water vapor permeability increase of 59.26%–94.44% compared with neat PLA while decreasing OP by 2.52%–29.66%. The equilibrium moisture content (EMC) rose with higher TPS ratios, displaying type II isotherms. FTIR analysis indicated no chemical interactions between PLA and TPS. Increasing the TPS ratio decreased PLA crystallinity, supporting the mechanical and barrier properties of the bi-layer films. Neat and bi-layer films exhibited smooth, homogeneous surfaces, with a visible interface in the cross-section of the bi-layer films. In conclusion, TPS shows promise as an alternative to improve oxygen barrier properties in PLA films without adversely affecting other properties.
