Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of three different music-based interventions on anxiety and fatigue levels in patients undergoing hemodialysis, compared to a concurrent control group receiving standard care. Methods: This randomized controlled trial involved 64 patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis. They were randomly assigned to four equal groups (n = 16 each): live music, live ney sound therapy (using a traditional reed flute known for its soothing, breath-like tones), a music-repeating robotic parrot therapy (an interactive robotic parrot that repeats music or sounds provided by the patient), or a control group (no intervention). The experimental groups received 30-min sessions 3 days per week for 2 months. The “Beck Anxiety Scale” and “Fatigue Severity Scale” were used to measure anxiety and fatigue, respectively. Assessments were performed before the intervention, immediately after the 2-month intervention period, and at 2 months after the end of the intervention period. Results: Before the intervention, there were no significant differences in anxiety or fatigue scores across the four groups (p > 0.05). After the interventions, all three groups exposed to music therapy showed significant reductions in both anxiety and fatigue scores compared to the control group (p < 0.001). Conclusion: All three therapies were effective in managing anxiety and fatigue symptoms in hemodialysis patients. Among them, music-repeating robotic parrot therapy demonstrated the most superior and longest-lasting effects in reducing both anxiety and fatigue levels. Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT07238374.

Identification of Problems Faced by Individuals with Epilepsy in Health Communication

Bingöl, Nuray; Aktepe Coşar, Dilan; İşcan Ayyıldız, Neşe

Objective: Individuals with epilepsy often face challenges with medication adherence and health monitoring because communication difficulties that hinder self-expression and information exchange, thereby complicating effective disease management. This study aimed to examine the health communication problems experienced by individuals with epilepsy. Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted among 172 individuals with epilepsy who presented to the neurology outpatient clinic in eastern and northern Türkiye between August 2023 and August 2024. Study data were collected using the descriptive data form and the health communication problems scale. The independent groups t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey test were used to evaluate the data. Results: On the health communication problems scale, individuals with epilepsy had mean scores of 2.41 ± 0.53 for the effective communication problems sub-dimension, 2.88 ± 0.80 for the social communication problems sub-dimension, and 2.68 ± 0.72 for the communication barriers sub-dimension. No significant differences were detected in the mean scores for health communication problems among individuals with epilepsy by sex, health expenditure, seizure type, or seizure characteristics (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The study revealed that individuals with epilepsy experienced moderate difficulty with health communication. Those who were married, had higher educational attainment, were unemployed, had lower income levels, and were receiving polytherapy experienced greater communication challenges with healthcare professionals.

Internal Medicine Nurses’ Perceptions of Work Environment Ergonomics and Safety Climate

    Aktepe Coşar, Dilan; Demirağ, Hatice

Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between the ergonomic conditions of the work environment and the perception of safety climate among internal medicine nurses. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted between October 30, 2023, and January 30, 2024, with a total of 440 internal medicine nurses in Turkey using the “snowball sampling” method. Data were collected using the “Personal Information Form,” the “Workplace Ergonomics Scale for Nurses,” and the “Safety Climate Scale.”. Results: A statistically significant difference was found in the mean scores of the “Workplace Ergonomics Scale for Nurses” based on marital status, educational level, perceived workload, and whether the nurses had received occupational safety training (p < 0.05). However, no significant difference was observed in the scale scores based on gender, professional experience, or satisfaction with the work environment (p > 0.05). A significant difference was also identified in the mean scores of the “Safety Climate Scale” according to gender, educational level, professional experience, satisfaction with the work environment, and occupational safety training status (p < 0.05). A significant negative correlation was found between the scores of the “Workplace Ergonomics Scale for Nurses” and its subdimensions and the safety training subdimension scores. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and correlation analysis. Conclusion: In conclusion, improving ergonomic conditions, strengthening managerial support, establishing effective safety communication, and promoting continuous education are recommended as key strategies to ensure that nurses work in a safe and supportive environment. Additionally, implementing tailored interventions based on demographic and professional characteristics may contribute to the development of a safety culture in nursing and the improvement of patient care quality.

Determining the health-seeking behaviors of people with epilepsy

Bingöl, Nuray; İşcan Ayyildiz, Neşe; Aktepe Coşar, Dilan

Purpose: Health-seeking behaviors of individuals who have epilepsy might affect the treatment of the disease, recovery process, and self-care activities. The present study was conducted to determine the health-seeking behaviors of individuals who have epilepsy. Materials and methods: The present study was conducted in a descriptive and cross-sectional design with 190 epilepsy patients who applied to the Neurology Clinic in the north and east of Turkey between April 2023 and January 2024. The data of the study were collected by using the Introductory Data Form, Health-Seeking Behavior Scale (HSBS). The IBM SPSS 27 software, variance analysis, Tamhane T2, ANOVA Test, Tukey Test, and Multiple Regression Analysis were used to evaluate the study data. Results: The mean score of the online health-seeking behavior sub-dimension of the Health-Seeking Behavior Scale of the individuals who had epilepsy was found to be 13.32 ± 5.40, the mean score of the professional health-seeking behavior sub-dimension was 9.92 ± 2.75, and the mean score of the traditional health-seeking behavior sub-dimension was 8.46 ± 3.29. No significant differences were detected between individuals’ sex, seizure types, and health-seeking behaviors, and a significant difference was detected between marital status, educational status, place of residence, occupation, income level, seizure frequency, and medication use status and health-seeking behaviors (p < 0.05). According to the multiple linear regression analysis that was used to examine the effects of sociodemographic characteristics of individuals with epilepsy on health seeking behavior scale scores, it was found that sociodemographic characteristics such as educational status, place of residence, marital status, and age significantly affected online, professional, and traditional health seeking behavior scores. Conclusion: In conclusion, it was found in the present study that the online health-seeking behavior of the individuals who had epilepsy was higher than other health-seeking behaviors. The health-seeking behaviors of patients were affected by sociodemographic characteristics (e.g., marital status, educational status, place of residence, occupation, income level, seizure frequency, and medication use). It is of great importance to conduct larger future studies on individuals who have epilepsy and are seeking traditional treatment for epileptic seizures because the sources from which health information is obtained might affect the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery processes.
