Synthesis, antioxidant, and antiurease activities of novel benzimidazole-based 1,3,4-thiadiazole derivatives

Gümrükçüoğlu, Taner İlker; Akgün, Hakan; Bektaş, Hakan; Sökmen, Bahar Bilgin; Menteşe, Emre

In this study, we report the synthesis and characterisation of five new benzimidazole-based 1, 3, 4-thiadiazole derivatives (5a–e) and the evaluation of their antioxidant and antiurease activities. The structures were confirmed by NMR (1H, 13C) and LC/TOF–MS analyses (spectra are given in the supplementary information). Biological assays (DPPH, ABTS, iron-reducing power, urease inhibition) revealed that compound 5e (bearing a 4-nitrophenyl substituent) exhibited the strongest urease inhibition (EC50 = 0.1296 ± 0.0260 µM), surpassing thiourea. One-way ANOVA revealed significant differences in urease inhibition between the compounds (p<0.001). Post-hoc Tukey tests confirmed that compound 5e was more effective than several other compounds. The compounds exhibited moderate and comparable antioxidant activities. The first SAR study shows that electron-withdrawing substituents increase urease inhibition, whereas electron-donating groups increase the reducing power. Comparison with earlier reported triazole analogues shows scaffold-dependent changes in bioactivity. These findings support thiadiazoles as promising dual-function agents for oxidative stress and urease-associated pathologies.

A reliability generalization meta-analysis of job insecurity scales: Evidence from hospitality and tourism research

    Polat, Eray

The study examines the pooled reliability estimates of job insecurity (JI) scales employed in hospitality and tourism (H&T) research. By synthesizing reported reliability coefficients and identifying moderators influencing score consistency, this meta-analytic study consolidates the fragmented psychometric evidence in the field. Reliability coefficients were derived from 140 independent samples comprising 56,265 respondents. Pooled reliability estimates were calculated separately for each scale, and moderator analyses were performed to explain the variability. Findings indicate that De Witte's (2000) scale is the most frequently utilized scale. Pienaar et al.’s (2013) scale yielded the highest estimate (α=.94, 95% CI [.89.,97]), whereas Hellgren and Sverke's (2003) scale demonstrated the lowest (α=.82, 95% CI [.78.,85]). Moderator analyses revealed that scale version, publication year, number of items, sample size, scale mean, and gender distribution significantly influenced reliability estimates. The study provides robust, context-dependent evidence to inform the selection of JI scales.

Analysis of Temporal Consistency in Video-Based Palmprint ROI Tracking

Sunnetci, Betul Kosmaz; Bingol, Ozkan; Gedikli, Eyup

In real-time palmprint recognition systems, operating under unconstrained conditions, maintaining the defined palmprint region of interest (ROI) throughout hand motion presents a significant challenge. Variations in hand position or orientation may cause the ROI to shift unexpectedly or partially or completely disappear, which can adversely affect subsequent processing steps and their computational cost. In this study, the temporal stability and consistency of palmprint ROIs extracted from video data in the MPW-180 dataset were evaluated using two different approaches. Specifically, the behavior of two methods (optical flow based tracking and keypoint-based MediaPipe Hands detection) was quantitatively analyzed over time using corner position shifts and overlap ratios. Experimental results indicate that although the keypointbased method produces spatially accurate ROI estimates, it may exhibit sudden positional jumps in certain frames. In contrast, the optical flow method provides smoother motion transitions but may introduce positional drift over time due to the accumulation of tracking errors.

Oğuzhan, Hatice; Akay, Gamze; Uzun, Sevda; Koç, Elif Simay; Öncer, Aysun

The aim of this study was to deeply examine the experiences of proxy grief among nurses providing pediatric palliative care. This qualitative phenomenological study was conducted with 16 nurses working in the pediatric ward of a hospital located in the northern region of the country. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological analysis method. The analysis revealed 3 themes (challenges experienced while caring for children in palliative care; secondary trauma and coping processes; proxy trauma and professional resilience) and 9 sub-themes (emotional strain during care, establishing an empathetic bond, emotional exhaustion, traumatic experiences, seeking psychological support, religious coping methods, developing a professional approach, resilience and acceptance, and motivation to continue in the profession). The study found that nurses providing pediatric palliative care experienced significant psychosocial stress. Pediatric nurses were particularly challenged emotionally when caring for palliative patients. In this context, it is important to develop stress-coping skills to help nurses manage vicarious trauma. Strengthening nurses psychologically and spiritually will positively impact their professional lives, which in turn will enhance the quality of care they provide.

Enhancement of bioactive properties and antioxidant activity in wheat chips enriched with purple wheat flour

    Yuksel, Ferhat; Kaya, Şemsettin

The objective of this study was to develop wheat chips fortified with purple wheat flour (PWF) and to evaluate the effects of PWF incorporation, frying temperature, and frying time on starch fractions, bioactive properties, antioxidant activity, and acrylamide formation. Response Surface Methodology was applied to assess the effects of PWF concentration (0%–100%), frying temperature (170–190 °C), and frying time (40–60 s) on the quality and functional properties of wheat chips. Resistant starch ranged from 0.51 to 0.80 g/100 g and increased slightly with higher PWF levels; this increase was found to be statistically significant. Acrylamide content was found to be a statistically significant parameter (p < .05), showing a decreasing trend from 1,362.68 to 1,082.76 μg/kg with increasing levels of PWF incorporation. Total phenolic, flavonoid, anthocyanin, and antioxidant activities (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), free radical scavenging capacity (ABTS)) significantly improved with PWF enrichment, whereas ferric reducing antioxidant power showed no notable change. These findings indicate that PWF can be effectively incorporated into deep-fried wheat chips, enhancing their functional and bioactive properties while reducing acrylamide formation.

Microwave-assisted green synthesis of gold nanoparticles using MAE-derived aqueous Rubuscaesius L. Fruit extract: characterization and UV–Vis spectral stability

Serdar, Gönül; Serdaroğlu, Vildan; Keşi̇r, Melek Koç; Kokoç, Memnune; Terzi̇oğlu, Salih

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized through a microwave-assisted green route using an MAE-derived aqueous Rubus caesius L. fruit extract as a natural reducing and stabilizing medium. The effects of precursor concentration, extract volume, and microwave power were systematically evaluated within the tested experimental range. The combination of 0.075 mM HAuCl₄0.3 H₂O, 0.4 mL fruit extract, and 180 W microwave irradiation produced the most distinct and symmetric surface plasmon resonance response. FT-IR analysis suggested that oxygen-containing functional groups in the extract may have contributed to Au³⁺ reduction and AuNP surface stabilization. TEM analysis revealed spherical, triangular, and hexagonal nanoparticles with an average core size of 11.6 ± 3.2 nm. DLS showed a hydrodynamic diameter of 71.92 ± 4.12 nm and a polydispersity index of 0.425, while the near-neutral zeta potential indicated limited colloidal stability. UV–Vis monitoring showed that the RC-AuNPs largely retained their spectral characteristics for up to 45 days. The synthesized nanoparticles exhibited a core size comparable to previously reported Rubus-mediated AuNPs. The specific contribution of this study is the use of an MAE-derived aqueous R. caesius L. fruit extract together with the systematic evaluation of key synthesis parameters affecting AuNP formation, optical response, and colloidal behavior.

Multi-criteria techno-economic evaluation of electric buses with vehicle-integrated photovoltaic for enhanced sustainability

    Başoğlu, Mustafa Engin

This study presents a multi-criteria techno-economic evaluation of electric buses (e-buses) equipped with vehicle-integrated photovoltaics (VIPV) to support the global transition toward zero-emission transportation. Aligned with international climate goals like the Paris Agreement and the European Union's 2050 carbon neutrality target, the research assesses ten 12-meter and 18-meter commercial e-bus models from various manufacturers. A computationally efficient methodology is employed, utilizing PVGIS-derived global horizontal irradiation (GHI) data specifically for Gümüşhane, Türkiye. The evaluation framework simultaneously analyzes several critical indicators: PV-based range extension, CO2 emission reduction, grid-connected charging frequency, battery depth of discharge (DoD), and payback period (PP). Findings from the baseline scenario—assuming 50% usable roof area and 22% module efficiency—reveal that e-buses can achieve a daily PV range of up to 19.16 km and annual CO2 emission savings ranging from 1709 to 2596 kg. Additionally, VIPV integration effectively mitigates battery aging by providing a peak DoD reduction of 6.91% and decreases grid-charging dependency by up to 5% during high-irradiance months. In an optimistic scenario featuring 80% usable roof area and 30.1% efficiency, the daily PV range reaches a maximum of 46 km, while the reduction in grid-charging frequency improves significantly to 21.16%. Economic assessments, including Net Present Value (NPV) analysis, confirm the investment's viability, with PPs as short as 3.76 years. This research provides a comprehensive, scalable framework and practical guidance for municipalities and fleet operators to enhance the sustainability of public transport (PT) through solar energy integration.

The Effect of Parrot Therapy on During Venipuncture Pain in Chronic Patients

    Demirağ, Hatice; Tuç, Adile

Objective There are no randomized controlled trial (RCT) in the current literature comparing live, robotic, and visual animal-based therapies. This single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted to comparatively evaluate the effectiveness of live parrot, robotic parrot, and parrot picture therapies on pain during venipuncture in adults with chronic illness. Methods The study included 240 patients randomized into four groups. Groups interacted with live parrots, robotic parrots, or parrot pictures during venipuncture. The control group received no intervention. Pain levels were assessed before and after the procedure using the "Visual Analog Scale (VAS)." Analysis was performed using Chi-Square test, One-way ANOVA and paired samples t-test. Results There was no difference in pre-procedure pain scores between the groups (p ' .05). After the procedure, the VAS score for the live parrot group was 2.01 ± 1.35, for the robotic parrot group 2.03 ± 1.46, for the parrot picture group 2.08 ± 1.62, and for the control group 4.91 ± 1.88. Again, after the procedure, pain scores in all experimental groups were found to be significantly lower than in the control group (p ' .001). Live parrot therapy was found to be the most effective pet therapy, followed by robotic parrot and parrot picture therapy. The reduction in pain in the live parrot group was statistically more significant than in the picture group. Conclusion The research findings revealed that pet therapy applied during venipuncture, especially live animal interaction, may be a potentially effective, safe, and non-pharmacological method for reducing pain. Robotic animals, on the other hand, can be considered a promising alternative when the use of live animals is not possible. It is recommended that these distraction strategies be considered and integration into routine nursing practices be developed as part of patient-centered care.

Modified very deep super resolution network-Gaussian mixture models based single image super-resolution: A comprehensive comparative analysis

    Günen, Mehmet Akif

Image Super-Resolution (SISR) is a vital, cost-effective solution for enhancing the spatial resolution of satellite imagery. However, a significant challenge in current SISR techniques is that while deep learning models excel at structural learning, they often struggle to accurately reconstruct intricate high-frequency details and preserve the statistical texture properties of high-resolution images. To address this gap, this paper proposes a novel hybrid method, termed mVDSR-GMM, which leverages the complementary strengths of Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) and a modified Very Deep Super-Resolution (mVDSR) network. GMM is utilized to model the underlying statistical and probabilistic properties of the image for accurate high-frequency reconstruction while the mVDSR network enhanced with 25 convolutional layers and Leaky ReLU activations boosts the model’s structural feature extraction and non-linear mapping capabilities. This hybrid approach technically integrates the mVDSR and GMM through a parallel merging of their estimated residuals within the luminance channel, thereby enhancing the spatial reconstruction of satellite imagery. The enhanced mVDSR network, with increased depth and Leaky ReLU activation functions, further boosts the model's learning capability and robustness. Through extensive evaluations using satellite imagery datasets and metrics such as PSNR, SSIM, BRISQUE, MSE, UIQI, SAM, and FD, mVDSR-GMM consistently outperformed existing techniques, demonstrating its effectiveness in improving spatial resolution. Experimental results indicate that mVDSR-GMM outperforms main competitors such as SwinIR and SinSR across all evaluation metrics, providing a robust reconstruction performance that is further validated by improved accuracy in the binary separation of urban structures (buildings and roads) from natural environments. The proposed mVDSR-GMM emerges as a promising tool for advancing satellite imagery resolution, with potential applications in remote sensing and geospatial analysis.

The Trend of Monthly Mean Streamflow Values and Regimes in the Susurluk Basin (Türkiye) with Mountain and Semi-Arid Climates

Yıldız, Mehmet Berkant; Toğrul, Burçe; Kankal, Murat; Akçay, Fatma; Şan, Murat; Nacar, Sinan

This study diagnoses monthly trends in streamflow magnitude and regime for the Susurluk Basin (Türkiye), which spans semi-arid and mountainous sub-climates. Monthly records from 1990 to 2019 were analyzed at 14 stream gauges and nine precipitation stations. Trends are assessed with the Mann–Kendall (MK) test alongside recent graphical approaches, Improved Visualization for Innovative Trend Analyses (IV-ITA) to resolve value class-based (low/high) behavior, and Innovative Polygon Trend Analysis (IPTA) with the Star Concept to quantify intra-annual transitions. Before the trend analyses, the stations were tested to determine whether their values were homogeneous, and any inhomogeneous stations were excluded from the study. The consistency between the trends of nine precipitation stations and the streamflow data in the basin was analyzed. Across the basin, the average streamflow increased by approximately 40–60% between January and March at many measurement points. However, it then decreased by around 80% in April, albeit at a more moderate rate in December. This suggests significant rebalancing occurred during the December–April period, when most of the annual streamflow occurs. IV-ITA exhibits broadly similar trends for both low and high streamflow classes, with notable exceptions in January–February. Precipitation–streamflow trend directions are largely consistent in the high-flow season (December–April), supporting the notion that climatic control influences the detected shifts. To contextualize these signals, basin-wide land-use/land-cover shifts (1990–2018), notably urban growth, forest expansion, and cropland reconfiguration, provide process context, indicating that a larger fraction of rainfall is routed as fast surface runoff while infiltration and base streamflow recharge decline, alongside seasonally modified water demand. Collectively, the MK+IV-ITA+IPTA framework reveals class-specific and intra-annual dynamics that are obscured by monolithic tests alone and provides decision-relevant evidence for allocation, drought–flood risk, and operations in an intensively managed basin.

Effect of sloe berry (Prunus spinosa L.) powder addition on physicochemical, rheological, antioxidant, and sensory properties of stirred yoghurt: a multivariate approach

Yeniçeri, Esra; Ürkek, Bayram; Şengül, Mustafa

In this study, stirred yogurt was produced using sloe berry powder at different ratios (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8%) and stored for 21 days. The effect of sloe berry powder addition on physicochemical properties was limited, whereas the effect of storage period was more pronounced. Lactic cocci and lactic bacilli counts ranged between 7.78–8.93 log CFU/g and 6.19–9.13 log CFU/g, respectively. Yeast and mold were detected in all samples after 14 days of storage. All color parameters were significantly affected by sloe berry powder addition (p <.001), whereas storage period had no significant effect (p >.05). Total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity increased with increasing levels of sloe berry powder. Only the potassium (K) content was affected by the addition of sloe berry powder. Viscosity and consistency values increased in yogurts containing 6% and 8% sloe berry powder on days 14 and 21 of storage. Sensory scores decreased in all samples at the end of storage. Principal component and correlation analyses indicated that the addition of sloe berry powder and storage period exerted distinct effects on the evaluated parameters. Overall, sloe berry powder can be considered a promising ingredient for the development of nutritional and functional stirred yogurt.

Game-based and individualized movement training improves physiological and motor outcomes in young adults with autism spectrum disorder: an experimental study from Türkiye

Aydın, Ahmet Serhat; Söyler, Mehmet; Zileli, Raif; Halmatov, Medera; Gürkan, Alper Cenk; Akcan, İbrahim Orkun; Yılmaz, Coşkun

Background: This study aims to examine the effects of game-based and individualized movement training (GBIMT) program on physiological (body weight, body fat percentage, BMI) and motor outcomes (balance, reaction time, motor speed) in young adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Methods: An experimental design with pre-test–post-test control groups was used in the study. A total of 20 participants (10 in the experimental group, 10 in the control group) with a mean age of 22.2 ± 4.8 years were monitored for eight weeks. The experimental group participated in GBIMT sessions for 60 min per day, two days per week, while the control group continued their usual educational routines. Body composition (InBody 270 Body Composition Analyzer, model Plus 270, South Korea), balance (TechnoGym, Cesena, Italy), reaction time (BlazePod Ltd., Israel), and motor speed (Computerized Tapping Test, Neurosoft Inc., USA) parameters were used as measurements. Results: Repeated measures ANOVA results indicated a significant reduction in body weight in terms of the experimental group (p = 0.014, η² = 0.289). Large effect sizes were observed for body fat percentage and BMI; however, the group × time interactions were not found to be statistically significant. A significant improvement was observed in the motor speed parameter within the experimental group (p = 0.032, η² = 0.231). Reaction time decreased by 9.8%, although the group × time interaction stayed within the significance limit (p = 0.063). A trend toward improvement was observed in balance parameters; however, no statistically significant difference was found. Conclusion: The findings indicate that GBIMT produced significant improvements in body composition and motor speed after implementing for eight weeks, and also showed a strong tendency to affect reaction time. As a controlled experimental study conducted in Türkiye, this research offers a unique contribution to the literature by demonstrating the effects of game-based and individualized movement programs on both physiological and motor outcomes in individuals with ASD. Phenolic Profiling of Laurus nobilis by LC–ESI–MS/MS: In Vitro Bioactivities and In Silico Enzyme Docking

Bak, Funda Erşen; Canbolat Gültekin, Deniz; Akmeşe, Osman; Atalay, Abdurrahman; Turan, İbrahim; Gültekin, Ergün; Demir, Selim; Aliyazicioglu, Yüksel

This study evaluated the branch, leaf, and fruit extracts of Laurus nobilis collected from Artvin in terms of phenolic composition, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antidiabetic activities and additionally investigated the binding of selected phenolics to α-amylase/α-glucosidase targets through molecular docking. Using LC–ESI–MS/MS analysis, 31 phenolic compounds were quantitatively identified, with epicatechin, luteolin-7-O-glucoside, and rutin predominating particularly in the branches and leaves. Antioxidant capacity was higher in branches and leaves (total phenolic content [TPC]/FRAP/DPPH IC50: branches and leaves, respectively, 95.27–60.84 mg gallic acid equivalent [GAE]/g, 206.16–162.05 mg Trolox equivalent [TE]/g, and 46.95–113.49 µg/mL). Antimicrobial activity was observed within a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) range of 1.25–10 mg/mL; leaves exhibited the strongest effect against Bacillus cereus (1.25 mg/mL), whereas fruits were most effective against Candida albicans (1.25 mg/mL). In antidiabetic evaluation, fruits yielded the lowest IC50 values against α-amylase and α-glucosidase (4.31 and 8.97 mg/mL, respectively), suggesting a “composition-over-quantity” effect despite low total phenolic content. Docking results supported high binding affinities of rutin (α-glucosidase −9.3 kcal/mol; α-amylase −8.1 kcal/mol) and luteolin (−8.6 kcal/mol for both enzymes). Overall, although branches and leaves exhibited strong antioxidant profiles, fruits showed more pronounced inhibitory effects on digestive enzymes; therefore, fractionation studies and in vivo/kinetic validations are recommended.

Akay, Gamze; Koç, Elif Simay; Oğuzhan, Hatice

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between post-traumatic stress, quality of life, and loneliness levels in adolescents following the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş. The research, designed as descriptive and correlational, was conducted with 701 children aged 13–18 who experienced the earthquake in Kahramanmaraş. Data were collected through a Demographic Information Form, the Child Post-Traumatic Stress Reaction Index, the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, and the UCLA Loneliness Scale-Short Form. Ethical principles were adhered to throughout the study. Female adolescents were found to have higher levels of post-traumatic stress (t = 3.508, p < 0.001) and lower quality of life (t = 4.223, p < 0.001). The adolescents exhibited severe levels of post-traumatic stress (55.25 ± 13.80). It was determined that the mother’s education level (F = 4.423, p = 0.002), the father’s occupation (F = 2.859, p = 0.036), and perceived income level (F = 5.912, p = 0.003) significantly influenced adolescents’ loneliness levels. The father’s occupation (F = 3.403, p = 0.017) was found to have a significant effect on post-traumatic stress levels, and perceived income level (F = 4.753, p = 0.009) had a significant effect on quality of life. A moderate negative correlation was found between post-traumatic stress levels and quality of life (r = −0.474, p < 0.001), and a weak positive correlation was observed between post-traumatic stress and loneliness levels (r = 0.215, p < 0.001). A weak negative correlation was also found between quality of life and loneliness levels (r = −0.284, p < 0.001). A moderate negative correlation was found between adolescents’ post-traumatic stress levels and quality of life, while a weak positive correlation was observed between post-traumatic stress levels and loneliness. It is recommended to provide psychological support and guidance services aimed at reducing post-traumatic stress and loneliness levels in adolescents.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered virtual patient application (ChatGPT) on the development of Mental Status Examination (MSE) skills in psychiatric nursing internship students and to explore how this process is reflected in their experiences. This study employed a sequential explanatory mixed-method design, consisting of a quantitative pre/post-test phase followed by a qualitative phase. In the quantitative phase, the MSE Competency Assessment scores of 27 undergraduate psychiatric nursing internship students were evaluated using a pre-test/post-test model. In the qualitative phase, in-depth individual interviews were conducted with 18 volunteer students. As part of the intervention, students participated in the “AI-Supported Virtual Patient Intervention: Structured Prompting Framework”. The quantitative findings of the study revealed that the mean MSE Competency Assessment scores increased from 42.00 ± 6.43 in the pre-test to 49.57 ± 3.44 in the post-test (Z = −6.266, p < 0.001). Thematic analysis of the qualitative data yielded five main themes: Skill Development, Learning Experience, Impact of AI, Debriefing, and Limitations. Students reported that the application enhanced their MSE examination and communication skills; they also described a unique learning experience through AI, highlighted the importance of guided support.

Bio-based and Biodegradable Nanocomposites for Clean Energy Applications

    Bozbeyoglu, Pinar; Altuner, Elif Esra

The growing global demand for energy and the environmental concerns associated with fossil fuels have accelerated the search for sustainable alternatives. Bio-based and biodegradable nanocomposites represent a new generation of materials that combine ecological compatibility with superior mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of bio-based polymer matrices (such as PLA, PHA, PBS, PEF, PVA, and natural polymers like cellulose, chitosan, and lignin) and their integration with nanofillers, including graphene, carbon nanotubes, TiO2, ZnO, and nanoclay. The synergistic effects of these hybrid structures are discussed in the context of clean energy technologies, such as solar cells, fuel cells, batteries, supercapacitors, and piezoelectric nanogenerators. In addition, the chapter highlights green synthesis routes, characterization methods, life cycle assessment (LCA), and industrial perspectives, emphasizing how nanocomposite design bridges performance enhancement with environmental sustainability.
