    A Proposed V2V Path Loss Model: Log-Ray

Kuzulugil, Kenan; Tugcu, Zeynep Hasirci; Cavdar, Ismail Hakki

Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication that has prominent involvement in the design of innovative communication solutions for the intelligent transportation system. Therefore, to develop V2V channel models, the knowledge of the propagation channel on which comprehensive research efforts have been carried is vital. In this study, we focused on the analysis and modeling of path loss characteristics for V2V communications and proposed a log-ray path loss model with the motivation of overcoming remarkable fitting errors between the two-ray model and measured data where the path loss exponent corresponds to different from 2. First, channel measurements were performed at 5.9 GHz with commercially available DSRC OBU devices for five different scenarios in typical highway and suburban environments in Gümüşhane, Turkey. Then, the large-scale characteristics of different propagation scenarios were analyzed and the proposed log-ray model performance was compared with commonly used log-distance and two-ray path loss models qualitatively and quantitatively. On the other hand, analysis of small-scale modeling and shadowing were also conducted for all scenarios and presented in the results. The findings clearly demonstrate that the proposed log-ray path loss model fits the measured data with a smaller RMSE value (2.54 dB) than the results of the log-distance (3.07 dB) and two-ray (3.72 dB) path loss models in the literature. In other words, the proposed model has approximately 17.5% and 32% increase in fitting performance according to the log-distance and the two-ray path loss models, respectively. The study results will be helpful for better performance analysis and system design of V2V communication.

Effect of foundation embedment ratio in suppressing seismic-induced vibrations using optimum tuned mass damper

Araz, Onur; Cakir, Tufan; Ozturk, Kasif Furkan; Kaya, Dilek

Tuned mass damper (TMD), which is used in structures to mitigate the dynamic responses caused by environmental loads, is tuned according to the dominant frequency of the structures. The dominant frequency of structure built on soil with low stiffness is significantly affected by the soil-structure interaction (SSI). In previous studies, only the surface foundation case is considered to investigate the design parameters of TMD considering SSI effects and the embedment depth of the foundation is neglected in these studies. Thus, this paper investigates the optimization of TMD for mitigation of responses of a high-rise building considering various depths of embedment and soil properties. The optimum parameters of TMD are investigated using five different optimization algorithms (i.e., simulated annealing, sequential quadratic programming, genetic algorithm, pattern search, and particle swarm optimization). The objective function minimizes the peak acceleration amplitude at the top of the structure. The effectiveness of optimum TMD is verified to use 20 near-fault pulse-like ground motions. The comparisons show that the embedment ratio of the foundation and the soil properties significantly affect the optimization of TMD.

Financial Wellbeing during Covid-19 Pandemic: Concerns about Medical Costs; [Covid-19 Salgını Sırasında Finansal Refah: Tıbbi Maliyetlerle İlgili Endişeler]

    Kocağ, Esra Karapinar

Financial wellbeing which represents a great concern for individuals regardless of their social status or their current employment situation constitutes an important element of overall individual wellbeing. Within a broader structure of financial wellbeing, concerns about medical costs have gained a vital importance particularly following the pandemic. Identifying what factors influence this growing concern is critical to tackle with the problem and improve individual wellbeing. Hence, this study is expected to shed light on such an important individual and national concern. To that end, this paper utilizes Global Financial Inclusion Database which is based on national representative surveys of about 128,000 adults across more than 120 countries. Empirical analysis in which ordered probit model was applied aims to investigate if there exists an association between financial concerns about medical costs and COVID-19. Findings of the empirical investigation reveal that being in the group of those who are very worried about financial hardship due to Covid-19 outbreak increases the probability of reporting being very worried about medical cost payments by about 34.5 percentage points. Therefore, it is seen that pandemic detrimentally related to individuals’ increased concerns over medical costs. These findings are expected to guide policy makers on the management of healthcare system and measures to improve individual wellbeing.

Current Sources and Actual PV Modules based Photovoltaic (PV) Emulator for Testing MPPT Algorithms and PV Inverters

Zhou, Zhongfu; Wang, Yidong; Yanarates, Cagfer; MacAulay, John

PV array emulator has been widely used for testing PV inverters and their control algorithms such as maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms. Various power electronics converter-based PV emulators have been presented in many research papers. This paper presents a PV emulator that is based on indoor solar panels (without solar irradiance) and external current source (dc power supply). The external current source is used to emulate the photo current that is usually generated by solar panel under sunlight. The advantages of the proposed PV emulator are that it can generate similar electrical characteristics of actual PV panel without sunlight, it is suitable for testing PV inverters and MPPT algorithms in indoor conditions where the sunlight is usually very weak. In addition, a PV array emulator that can emulate electrical performance under partial shading conditions was constructed by using two solar panels and two current sources. Test results show that the proposed PV emulator provides a similar performance of real PV array under real sun light. It provides a low-cost solution for testing PV inverters and control algorithms inside a laboratory environment.

The Numerical Solutions of the Conformable Time-Fractional Noyes Field Model via a New Hybrid Method

    Öner, Bedir Kaan; Anaç, Halil

This article employs a novel method, namely the conformable q-Sawi homotopy analysis transform method (Cq-SHATM) to investigate the numerical solutions of the nonlinear conformable time-fractional Noyes-Field model. The proposed method, namely Cq-SHATM, is a hybrid approach that integrates the q-homotopy analysis transform method and the Sawi transform using the concept of conformable derivative. 3D graps of the solutions obtained with this method were drawn. Additionally, 2D graphs of the solutions were obtained in the Maple software program. The computer simulations were conducted in order to validate the efficacy and reliability of the proposed method.

Comparison of Mechanical Properties Obtained for Armor Steels: Conventional Methods vs. Nanoindentation

    Ekmekci, Dursun; Cora, Ömer Necati

The mechanical properties of three armor steels, namely Ramor 500, Ramor 550, and Armox Advance, were acquired by nanoindentation and conventional methods, and then the results were compared. To this goal, samples were extracted from different (e.g., undeformed and deformed) zones of the ballistically tested armor plates. Then, nanoindentations were performed at 10-mN maximum load and different maximum indentation depths (50-150 nm). In addition to the hardness and modulus of elasticity values of the examined materials, residual stress values of the samples were calculated through the equations suggested in the literature. These values were then compared with the residual stress measurements obtained with the conventional x-ray diffraction (XRD) - sin2ψ method. Moreover, Charpy V-notch impact tests were performed to calculate the fracture toughness of armor steel samples. Microstructural analysis (e.g., optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscope), surface roughness, and micro-hardness (micro-Vickers) measurements were also obtained. It was noted that hardness values for the Ramor 500 and Ramor 550 armor steels were in the range of 5.5-9 GPa, whereas the hardness values of Armox Advance samples were obtained in the 8.6-10.2 GPa range at a 50-nm indentation depth. The residual stress values obtained with nanoindentation were found to be in quite good agreement with the one obtained through XRD. It was proven that nanoindentation can be used to acquire several mechanical properties through considerably less sample preparation procedure, in an automated, and a more representative manner because of the measurements obtained at multiple points.

Saeighi Mameghani, Shiva; Yilmaz, Müge; Balcı Çelik, Seher; Karimi, Kambiz

Right now, more than ever in our lives, we need to remain optimistic. The present study aimed to examine the validity and reliability of The Optimism Scale, developed by Balcı & Yılmaz (2002), among Iranian university students and to adapt to Iranian culture. The scale is a single-factor scale with 24 items. The participants were selected using an appropriate sampling method, and the sample consisted of 600 Iranian university students (360 females and 240 males) from Tehran and Tabriz cities. Participants’ age ranged from 18 to 24 years (M = 21.58, SD = 1.75). The study findings suggested similarities between Iran and Turkey culture (e.g., religion, language, neighborhood relations). The optimism scale revealed a good construct validity in the Goodness of fit index indicators. The Cronbach alpha internal consistency coefficient for the scale was 0.76 and Convergent validity with happiness was 0.38. In future studies, the scale’s factor structure can be investigated in different samples, such as adolescents and adults.

Effect of Plastic Deformation on the Mechanical Properties of Dual-Phase Steels Using Nanoindentation

Ekmekci, Dursun; Uşun, Altuğ; Cora, Ömer Necati

The mechanical properties of two advanced high-strength steels (AHSS), DP 1000 and DP 1200 dual-phase (DP) grades, under deformed and undeformed conditions, were investigated using nanoindentation, and the results were compared with those obtained from the conventional methods. To this goal, 3-point bending tests were applied to induce deformation in the samples. Before and after these tests, nanoindentations were performed at different forces and indentation depths. In addition to the hardness and modulus of elasticity values of the steels, the residual stresses on the samples after deformation were obtained by using the equations suggested in the literature, also with x-ray diffraction (XRD). Finite element (FE) modeling of 3-point bending and nanoindentation were performed to obtain stress–strain curves of the materials numerically. The stress–strain curves obtained by numerical analysis agree well with those reported in the literature. The variations of the hardness and modulus of elasticity values are narrower for deeper indentation (50 nm versus 200 nm), and the effect of deformation is more pronounced on the modulus of elasticity values (10–30% increase with the deformation) while hardness values increased with the effect of deformation, 10% at most.

Does ecological footprint in ECCAS and ECOWAS converge? Empirical evidence from a panel unit root test with sharp and smooth breaks

Çelik, Orkun; Adali, Zafer; Bari, Bilgin

The costs due to climate change have been increasing day by day. In addition to the risk of losing our planet’s natural assets due to the increasing destructiveness of climate-related natural disasters and extreme climate events, we are also faced with grave economic risks. For this reason, researchers have recently focused on environmental issues. Nevertheless, they generally have investigated developed countries and ignored developing and least developed countries such as African countries. The United Nations (2015) report highlights that African countries should be specially investigated. Hence, the paper analyzes whether the ecological footprint in the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) converges for the period from 1961 to 2017. We employ Bahmani-Oskooee et al.’s (2014) panel unit root test with sharp and smooth breaks. The empirical findings demonstrate that the ecological footprint is stationary in ECCAS and ECOWAS. Stated in other words, the ecological footprint in these countries converges. Therefore, policymakers could implement similar policies to reduce the ecological footprint in these countries. This policy framework paves the way for an effective sustainable development.

Influences of Wall Configurations on Earthquake Behavior of Cantilever Retaining Walls Considering Soil-Structure Interaction Effects

Ozturk, Kasif Furkan; Cakir, Tufan; Araz, Onur

Cantilever walls are frequently and necessarily built not only in earthquake prone regions but also on different foundation subsoils with various physical and mechanical characteristics. The response of these structures is a complicated soil-structure interaction (SSI) problem, in which the relative stiffness between the soil and structure is of critical importance. In addition to different soil conditions and earthquake motions, the wall configurations have an important role in the cantilever retaining wall design. Thus, the major objective of this work is to investigate the effects of various configurations on seismic response of the cantilever retaining walls considering SSI. Accordingly, the seismic response of the interaction systems is revealed using the 3D finite element models (FEM) in time domain, assuming linearly elastic behavior for the wall, and elastoplastic behavior for backfill and foundation soil. Viscous absorbent boundaries are employed to both simulate radiation scenario and avoid undesirable wave reflections generated by soil lateral boundaries. Backfill-wall interfaces are modeled using the unidirectional interface elements with nonlinear force-deflection abilities. The interaction systems are analyzed considering three different cantilever wall configurations (inverted T-type, L-type, and the wall with a base key), four different ground motion records, and four different subsoil systems. Nonlinear seismic analyses are carried out to visit how considering the variation of these parameters influences the wall behavior. The results from parametric studies show that the wall configuration, SSI effects and ground motions are remarkably influential on seismic responses of the cantilever walls such as the stresses and horizontal displacements.

Multi-criteria evaluation of medical waste management process under intuitionistic fuzzy environment: A case study on hospitals in Turkey

Çelik, Sefa; Peker, İskender; Gök-Kısa, A. Cansu; Büyüközkan, Gülçin

Waste management has come to the fore in the whole world with the increasing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic along with concerns about human health, environmental threats, and socio-economic factors, etc. Medical waste is one of the waste types that need special management processes including particularly collection, storage, separation, and disposal. Healthcare activities create a great amount of medical waste deriving from the hospitals. This study aims to determine the hospital that carries out medical waste management in the most effective way in Erzurum, Turkey. To handle intense uncertainty in the evaluation process, the case is analyzed by Intuitionistic Fuzzy Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (IFMCDM) methods. The present study contributes to the literature by focusing on a real case problem under IF environment in a Group Decision-Making (GDM) framework. Additionally, based on the literature review and expert judgments, the evaluation criteria relevant to the case are defined in this paper. To this end, a four-phased integrated methodology that involves Intuitionistic Fuzzy Weighted Averaging (IFWA), IF Analytical Hierarchy Process (IFAHP), IF Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (IFTOPSIS) and One-Dimensional Sensitivity Analysis, is conducted. Firstly, IFWA is aimed to express the significance levels of decision makers (DMs) based on their knowledge, qualifications and experiences. Secondly, IFAHP is used to calculate the importance weights of the decision criteria and IFTOPSIS is preferred to rank the available hospitals. Then, sensitivity analysis is employed to display robustness. According to the results, the most important criteria are Qualified personnel, Health institution infrastructure, and Control of waste, respectively and the most efficient hospital is determined.

Energy, exergy analysis and optimization of insulation thickness on buildings in a low-temperature district heating system

    Terhan, Meryem; Abak, Sena Saliha

In the study, energy and exergy analysis of the buildings on a campus in Turkey are conducted by using actual operating data and taking measurements in the district heating system as a case study. The energy and exergy demands, losses that stem from all buildings are calculated according to average daily outdoor temperature data. Due to the high heat losses in the buildings, determining the optimal insulation thickness for the exterior wall should be investigated. Therefore, optimal insulation thicknesses, energy savings, fuel consumptions and payback periods of the insulation material on the exterior wall of the building are examined by using Life Cycle Assessment and P1–P2 method for natural gas. Optimal insulation thicknesses are calculated for different insulation materials such as XPS, glass wool, rock wool and EPS for the climatic regions (HDD=800–4250°C days). According to average exergy losses from the building components per unit area, the average total exergy loss is calculated as 2.39×10-2 kW/m2.year and 1.42×10-3 kW/m2 (5.92%) of this loss stems from the exterior walls, 1.93×10-3 kW/m2 (8.07%) from the floors, 7.37×10-4 kW/m2 (3.08%) from the roofs, 1.58×10-2 kW/m2 (65.99%) from the windows and doors, 4.04×10-3 kW/m2 (16.92%) from the ventilation with infiltration. Energy requirement values of the building are found between 2.68–25.70 kWh/m3 towards from the warmest to the coldest climatic region for the uninsulated wall. In the un-insulated state, fuel consumption varies between 1.93-18.48 m3/m2 from the warmest to the coldest region. The optimal insulation thickness values of the building’s exterior wall are calculated as between 2.3–10.0 cm according to different climatic regions. In-state of exterior wall insulation of 3 cm, fuel consumption decreases by 46.63%–53.46% compared to different insulation materials and climatic regions compared to the un-insulated state

Detection of buried objects with different material properties by ground penetrating radar (GPR) method; [Farklı malzeme özelliklerine sahip gömülü nesnelerin yer radarı (GPR) yöntemiyle tespit edilmesi]

    Sari, Mahmut

GPR which permits the capture of high-resolution subterranean data, has developed into a key geophysical technique for determining the depth, geometry, boundaries, and volumes of buried shallow objects. In this study, the detectability of the location, size, and physical property parameters of buried objects with the ground radar method was reveal ed by creating a laboratory environment in real field conditions. For this purpose, a realistic laboratory environment with a depth and length of 5 m was created on the filled soil material at the test site, and buried objects with different material properties were placed. In addition, by adding sand material to the middle part of the soil fill material in the test area, its situation in different layers was tried to be examined. GPR data were collected on the models using the RAMAC CU II system and a 500 MHz center frequency shield antenna. After processing the data, reflected/scattered electromagnetic (EM) wave fields on the radargram of a profile perpendicular to the buried objects were examined. In this way, the positions, sizes, physical properties (types) of buried objects along with their depths and their situations in different layer environments have been revealed. According to the results, the peak width of hyperbolas and the sizes of buried objects were determined on the processed radargrams. The types of buried objects and their situations in different layer environments are clearly revealed. The scattered wave field amplitudes of the plastic pipe (A and C regions) from the reflection coefficients are substantially lower than the scattered wave field amplitudes of the iron pipe (B region) from the buried objects. It is thought that the strong reflections extending from the C region to the deep on the radar are caused by the lead blocks in the plastic pipe.

The Sr, Nd, Pb and Hf isotopes and crystallization conditions of the middle Eocene Daǧdibi Pluton in the eastern Sakarya Zone, Turkey

Sipahi, Ferkan; Gücer, Mehmet Ali; Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Yi, Keewook; Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Akaryall, Enver; Saydam Eker, Çiǧdem; Doruk, Cüneyt

Magmatic activity in the Sakarya Zone, an important segment of the Alpine orogenic belt, continues intermittently from the middle Carboniferous to Miocene. In this study, we provide geochronological and geochemical data from the Daǧdibi Pluton in the eastern Sakarya Zone to present some inferences on the source region and petrogenesis of the middle Eocene magmatism. U-Pb zircon geochronology from two granodiorite samples gives middle Eocene ages of 44.75 ± 0.92 and 45.01 ± 0.59 Ma. The pluton is mainly composed of K-feldspar, plagioclase, quartz, Mg-hornblende/actinolite, Fe-Ti oxides and small amounts of biotite, and secondary chlorite and epidote. Parental magma of the intrusive rocks has a high-K calc-alkaline affinity with metaluminous character. The oxygen fugacity values vary between -18 and -17. The rocks show slightly radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr(i) (0.704845-0.705726) ratios and μNdi values between -0.96 and +0.52. Pb-Pb isotope ratios are typical for those of the lower continental crust. μHf(i) values of the zircons range from 0.14 to 10.26. The geochemical and isotopic features of the pluton point to a parental magma derived from a depleted mantle that was metasomatized by fluids during previous subduction events. The volumetric abundances of the rock types are decreased as the silica content increase, implying that the fractional crystallization is the most important process during the formation of the present compositional range of the pluton. Amphibole, plagioclase and Fe-Ti oxides are the fractionated phases while K-feldspar is largely accumulated. In the light of the data presented above, slab breakoff is regarded as the geodynamic process responsible for the formation of the Daǧdibi Pluton in the middle Eocene.

Multiple parameter analysis for assessing and forecasting earthquake hazards in the Lake Van region, Turkey

    Öztürk, Serkan; Alkan, Hamdi

A detailed spatial-temporal analysis of the seismic activity in and around the Lake Van region was performed using several seismotectonic parameters such as b-value, Z-value, relative intensity (RI), pattern informatics (PI), and Coulomb stress changes. Correlations between these parameters were analyzed to esti-mate and forecast potential seismic hazards in the Lake Van region. Particular attention was paid to the parts of the study region that exhibited smaller b-values, higher Z-values, and high-stress changes at the beginning of 2022 and to the locations of earthquake hotspots determined from the composite earthquake forecast map for 2022–2032, i.e., Muradiye, Çaldıran, Özalp, Erçek, Van city center and Gevaş covering the faults of Çaldıran, Yeniköşk, Erciş, Malazgirt and the fault zones of Saray and Van. To provide more accurate interpretations regarding potential earthquake occurrences in the near future, the seismotectonic parameters analyzed in the scope of this study were compared with the corresponding seismological, geological, geodetical, and geochemical variables reported in the literature. This comparison showed that, firstly, our results are consistent with those reported in previous studies, and, secondly, all these variables should be interpreted in combination to correctly assess strong earthquake hazards. Furthermore, this type of multiple-parameter analysis may be important for the description of seismic, tectonic, and structural characteristics of the nature of the crust. Our findings show that almost all seismotectonic parameters indicative of anomaly regions, i.e., lower b-values, higher Z-values, high-stress distribution, and hotspots, were recorded in the same parts of the study region. Thus, the anomaly regions detected at the beginning of 2019 and between 2022 and 2032 may be considered to be potential zones of future great earthquakes. To summarize, the correlations among these variables may provide accurate information for assessing and forecasting earthquake hazards in this region.

The Effect of Organic Hawthorn (Crataegus tanacetifolia) Fruit Vinegar Supplement on Growth Performance, Carcass Characteristics and Some Serum Parameters in Broiler Chickens Subjected to Cyclic Heat Stress

    Kaya, H.

Background: This study, it was aimed to determine the effects of adding organic hawthorn (Crataegus tanacetifolia) fruit vinegar (HFV) in different doses to the drinking water of broiler chickens reared under cyclic heat stress (CHS) on performance, carcass characteristics and some serum parameters. Methods: In the study, 300 one-day-old broiler chickens (Ross 308), after a 1-week acclimation period, were tested in two different (24 and 35◦C) ambient temperatures and three different HFV levels (0, 2 and 4 ml/L) according to the 2×3 factorial experimental design. Chicks were randomly distributed to 6 experimental groups with 5 replications, with 10 animals in each replication. The addition of organic HFV to the drinking water of broiler chickens subjected to CHS didn’t affect growth performance, carcass characteristics and visceral weight (P>0.05). Addition of HFV increased serum FFA level, decreased serum MDA, HDL and TAG levels (p<0.05) and did not affect other serum parameters (P>0.05) in CHS-treated groups. Result: As a result, it was concluded that the addition of HFV to the drinking water of broiler chickens exposed to cyclic heat stress did not have any negative effect on growth performance, carcass characteristics and visceral weights, but it could be beneficial in preventing lipid peroxidation.
