EFFECT OF DIFFERENT GIBBERELLIC ACID DOSES TREATMENT ON SEED GERMINATION OF WILD SAINFOIN (ONOBRYCHIS VICHFOLIA)

    Okcu, Melih; Topaloglu, Fatma Nil

Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) subjected to a range of studies relating to agronomy, environmental preferences, crop protection and plant-microbial interactions, is an important forage species in agriculture, that be prefered by farmers than other forage legumes. This fact has give importance to breeding of this plant for the development of diverse varieties and so for this purpose many wild forms are cultivated. The most important problem in sainfoin cultivation is poor germination problem in wild species. With the aim of solving this problem, we carried out to evaluate the response of wild sainfoin seeds to the application of different gibberellic acid (GA3) (a germination hormone) concentration in vitro conditions. Five levels of gibberellic acid (100, 250, 500, 1000 and 1500 ppm) was used in the test. Seed coat was removed and the seeds were placed on Murashige&Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with gibberellic acid (GA3) and kept under these conditions for 46 days. Seed germination percentage and germination associate parameters; speed of germination, mean germination time, mean daily germination, peak value and germination value, were calculated. The experiment was carried out using complete block design with three replications. According to the results obtained from different GA3 application medium, the highest germination percentage 48,89 recorded at in medium containing 250 ppm GA3 whereas in control has recorded 42,22 at the end of the 46th day. Other concentrations, 100, 500,1000 and 1500 ppm, achieved a reduction in seed germination compared to control, respectively 28,15, 15,56, 24,44, 34,81. Not only in germination percentage result, but also in other germination associate parameters, the addition of 250 ppm gibberellic acid to Murashige and Skoog medium increased the values compared to the control and ensured a rapid increase and peak between the 8th and 12th days in all parameters.

Technological developments have left indelible impacts on the economy all along the line. Every novel invention realized changes production processes rapidly, which concomitantly transforms social life. One of the most apparent examples of this is the First Industrial Revolution emerged in the 18th Century. Subsequent to this development which was considered as the beginning of production in the factory environment, the second industrial revolution based on automation (First half of 20th Century) and the third Industrial Revolution based on electronics (last quarter of the 20th century) were realized. Finally, the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) process was initiated by Germany in 2011. In line with this process in which cyber-physical systems and robotic technologies are expected to prevail, Super-Smart Society (Society 5.0) model was developed by Japan in 2017. Both Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0 implementations are expected to have a significant impact on economic and social life and to change both labor and Welfare State practices fundamentally. It is also possible that these aforementioned developments may have an impact on social security system of the government. Likewise, the emergence of extensive unemployment condition due to robotic technologies and training for adaptation of available labor force to the new technologies may lead to redesign of the social security system. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the possible impacts of the Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0 processes on social security expenditures. The basic result obtained from the study; unemployment increase and training activities for the labor-force increases social security expenditures, but however digitalization process in Welfare State implementations may be expected to decrease social security expenditures in the long-run depending on efficiency and effectiveness increases in the government.

Effect of nano materials additives on fuel properties and combustion characteristics

    Sezer, Ismet

This study compiled the results of various researches performed on using nanomaterials additives in diesel engine fuels such as diesel, biodiesel, water emulsified fuels and various fuel blends. Three different techniques are used the reduction of the harmful exhaust emissions of the diesel engine. The first technique for the reduction of harmful emissions is improved the combustion by modification of engine design and fuel injection system, but this process is expensive and time consuming. The second technique is the using various exhaust gas devices like catalytic converter and diesel particulate filter. However, the use of these devices affects negatively diesel engine performance. The other technique to reduce emissions and also improve diesel engine performance is the use of various fuel additives. The major pollutants of diesel engine are oxide of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM). It is very difficult to reduce NOx and PM simultaneously in practice. The most researches declare that the best way to reduce the emissions and increase the engine performance is the use of nano material additives and water emulsified fuels. The effects on fuel properties and combustion characteristics of different nano material additives in various diesel engine fuels are investigated in this review.

    Okcu, Melih; Karabulut, Besim

Mankind caused a lot of harm to their environment unintentionally during agriculture. Thus nowadays production techniques that are compatible with nature, making the right use of the resources, targeting sustainable development, looking after animal welfare are beginning to spread throughout the world. Especially organic agriculture among those techniques gained a seat as it depends on customer preference. Organic agriculture that has the following five fundamental features: compatibility to nature, self sufficiency, sustainability, welfare, traceability began with the production of dried grape, dried figs, dried apricots and nuts in our country during the 1980s with the contractual agriculture system intending to export. During the following years, hardshell and dried fruits, frozen fruits and vegetables, fresh fruits and vegetables, spices and legumes followed the previous ones in export. Also, production and exportation of rose water, rose oil, olive oil, cotton and textile products increased considerably. In our country where there is a wide variety of products for organic agriculture, in eastern black sea region tea and nuts are the most cultivated products. Organic agriculture is carried out in every province of the region, the contribution of provinces in percentage as follows: Rize 42%, Ordu 25%, Artvin 13%, Trabzon 10%, Gumushane and Giresun 5%. Caffeic acid grafted chitosan as a novel dual-functional stabilizer for food-grade emulsions and additive antioxidant property

Ilyasoglu, Huri; Nadzieja, Marcin; Guo, Zheng

The aim of this study was to develop a novel dual-functional stabilizer for food-grade Pickering emulsions by grafting caffeic acid onto chitosan via a free radical mediated method. The grafting of caffeic acid onto chitosan was confirmed by UV-vis absorption spectra, FTIR spectra and H-1 NMR spectra and DSC thermogram. The antioxidant properties of the caffeic acid grafted chitosan (CA-g-Ch) were measured by three in vitro assays. Caffeic acid-grafted chitosan displayed much better Fe2+ chelating property than both chitosan and caffeic acid, and retained comparable DPPH radical scavenging activity as caffeic acid. Moreover, the formation of the CA-g-Ch based emulsion was monitored by the turbidity, zeta potential, and particle size measurements. The CA-g-Ch polymers were found to be pH-responsive. The oil (linoleic acid) in water emulsions with the CA-g-Ch (as emulsifier/Pickering stabilizer) was prepared to examine its potential to stabilize Pickering emulsions, as well as its additive antioxidant properties. The results (zeta potential, mean droplet size, creaming index and TBARS values etc) demonstrated that the CA-g-Ch could act as a dual-functional stabilizer for Pickering emulsions. The emulsions made with the CA-g-Ch were found to be stable at a broad pH range of 3-6. Our findings proved that CA-g-Ch as novel dual-functional polymeric surfactant, may have great potential to find applications in food and pharmaceutical industries.

Hanci, Hayrunisa; Coskun, Mehmet Veysel; Uyanik, Muhammed Hamidullah; Sezen, Selma; Igan, Hakan

Objective: In this study we investigated in vitro antifungal activity of fluconazole, green tea (Camellia sinensis) and quince leaf (Cydonia oblonga) extracts in Candida strains isolated from blood cultures. Methods: Fifty Candida spp were included to study. Camellia sinensis and Cydonia oblonga leaves collected from Rize and Erzurum/Tortum regions were prepared as an extract. Then stock solutions of the extracts and fluconazole powder obtained from the manufacturer were prepared for use in the Broth Microdilution (BMD) method according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) M27 A3 recommendation. Fluconazole minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values obtained from BMD method were evaluated according to CLSI M27 A4 break points. MIC values obtained for Camellia sinensis and Cydonia oblonga were interpreted according to fluconazole break points since there is no break points in the literature. Results: Of the 50 Candida spp. included in the study, 37 (74%) were C. albicans while 13 (26%) were non-albicans species. The most common isolated non-albicans species was C. parapsilosis (14%). For all tested Candida strains MIC 50 and MIC 90 values for fluconazole were found to be 0.125 mu g/mL- 0.25 mu g/mL while they were determined as 0.125 mu g/mL-64 mu g/mL and 0.125 mu g/mL-0.125 mu g/mL for green tea and quince leaves, respectively. Conclusion: According to the low MIC values, it is seen that green tea and quince leaf are in vitro effective against Candida species. However, further extensive in vitro and in vivo studies should be done on the possibility that green tea and quince leaf can be used alternatively in the treatment of invasive Candida infections.

Validity of Unemployment Hysteresis: The Most Fragile Five Developing Countries

    Akkus, Omer; Topuz, Seher Gulsah

This study investigates the movement of unemployment for five most fragile developing countries including Turkey over the period 1980-2016. For this purpose, which one of the three approaches within the theoretical literature natural unemployment rate hypothesis, unemployment hysteresis or structuralist theory of unemployment is valid is examined using traditional unit root and unit root tests allowing for structural breaks. Hypothesis of unemployment hysteresis is valid for five most fragile developing countries according to both results of traditional unit root and unit root test allowing for structural breaks. Namely, unemployment rate does not fluctuate around natural unemployment rate and therefore the results indicate that shocks do not create temporary effects on unemployment but permanent. Governments in five most fragile developing countries are expected to actively intervene in the policy on unemployment since the unemployment rate does not tend to return to its natural level.

Akdede, Sacit Hadi; Keyifli, Nazli; Oktar, SA; Taskin, Y

This paper empirically investigates the determinants of political polarization. Size of government and income distribution are the main independent variables along with other controlling variables. The statistical analysis uses panel data econometric. The sample of countries includes 57 countries and time period spans between 1990 and 2015. Results of regressions analysis indicates that increased income inequality increases political polarization. Political polarization is derived from World Values Survey (WVS). It is measured as standard deviation of responses to the question what is role for government. In addition, results of our empirical indicates that increased government size reduces the political polarization. The paper explains the links for these findings. It concludes with some policy implications.
