Yılmaz, Hacı Ömer; Aslan, Ramazan; Unal, Cihan

COVID-19 disease, which has spread rapidly all over the world since the first case was detected in December 2019, has become the primary focus in every country. Radical measures have been taken by governments to prevent the spread of the disease. Precautions and social rules have required drastic changes to daily life activities everywhere. University students who have had to interrupt their educations are one of the affected groups by this disease sociologically, psychologically and physiologically. The aim of this study was planned and conducted to determine the effect of COVID-19 on university students' eating habits and food purchasing behaviors. The study was completed in April 2020 with 866 university students studying and training at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Gümüşhane, Turkey. Research data was obtained by online questionnaire. The questionnaire was prepared with information obtained from a literature review and the opinions of experts. It included questions about eating habits and food purchasing behaviors. The basic result of the study was that COVID-19 disease has caused significant changes in the eating habits and food purchasing behaviors of university students. Primarily, they now paid greater attention to hygiene when food purchasing, and had increased their consumption compared to previously, since they were now home 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Mineralogy, chemistry, and genesis of zeolitization in Eocene tuffs from the Bayburt area (NE Turkey): Constraints on alteration processes of acidic pyroclastic deposits

Cicerali, Derya; Arslan, Mehmet; Yazar, Emel Abdioglu; Yücel, Cem; Temizel, Irfan; Park, Sohyun; Schroeder, Paul A.

Eocene vitric tuffs in the Bayburt area (NE Turkey) possess a dacite-rhyodacite composition and contain abundant altered glass shards and flattened fibrous pumice with lesser amounts of pyrogenic minerals (plagioclase, quartz, biotite, and sanidine). Zeolitization is common and generally develops in the glassy components. The main zeolite mineral found in the tuffs is clinoptilolite, with lesser amounts of analcime and mordenite (?). Smectite is the dominant clay mineral, with lesser amounts of kaolinite also present. Opal-CT, calcite, and dolomite occur as secondary minerals. Scanning electron microscopy studies reveal the dissolution of glass, with the development of popcorn-textured smectites and tabular clinoptilolites developed. The opal-CT spheres found on the clinoptilolite crystals appear to have crystallized simultaneously and are due to excess silica in the environment. Fibrous mordenite (?) also developed on the clinoptilolites. In the clinoptilolites R-r = 0.81-0.82, Si/Al = 4.20-4.70, and K+ is the dominant exchangeable cation (0.65-3.30) seen, together with lesser amount of Ca2+ (0.39-2.25) and Na+ (0.02-2.16). The degree of zeolitization increases with the content of glassy component in the tuffs. The formation of K-clinoptilolite is controlled by the SiO2/Al2O3 (4.9-7.0) and K2O/Na2O (0.8-10.8) ratios in the zeolitized tuffs. delta O-18(V-SMOW) and delta DV-SMOW values of clinoptilolite-rich tuffs range from 22 to 25.6960 and from -96 to -111 parts per thousand, respectively, which suggests that zeolitization occurred at low temperatures (30-55 degrees C) via fluid-rock interactions. Smectite was initially formed from the devitrification of glassy components and is associated with the increase in (Na+ +K+ +Ca2+)/H+ activity and the presence of high pH similar to-9-10) fluids. The zeolites subsequently developed within a saline-alkali shallow marine environment.

Nature of tourmaline formation in quartz porphyry in the E Sakarya zone (NE Turkey): Geochemistry and isotopic approach

    Sipahi, Ferkan

Tourmaline, which exhibits important differences in terms of texture and composition, is found in 44 My aged quartz porphyry from Karadağ in the eastern Pontide (NE Turkey). Tourmaline has high Al and Mg contents and is the chemical zoning; it contains Mg that can substitute for Fe and/or Al in the Y site and X-vacancy that can replace Na in the X site from the core to rim. Tourmaline, classified as dravite component, has low Fe content and very low Ca content. The V (112-510 ppm) and Sr (37.3-147.1 ppm) contents of tourmalines related to quartz porphyry are in conformity with metamorphic and magmatic tourmalines. Tourmalines have similar rare earth elements (REEs) but lower heavy REE contents than host quartz porphyry. The δ18O and δD values of tourmalines are relatively narrow, ranging from 5.7 to 8.5% V-SMOW and from -58 to -72% V-SMOW, respectively, consistent with primary magmatic water. The oxygen-isotope thermometry calculation of quartz and tourmaline pair yields equilibrium formation temperature of 432 °C. The formation of tourmaline shows a post magmatic origin, confirming magmatic fluid cooling and fluid-rock interactions.

Geochronology, geochemistry, and petrology of adakitic Pliocene–Quaternary volcanism in the Şebinkarahisar (Giresun) area, NE Turkey

    Yücel, Cem

The Pliocene–Quaternary volcanics in NE Turkey are mainly hornblende–phyric trachyandesites having a narrow range of SiO 2 from 61.88 to 63.00 wt.% and exhibiting adakitic signatures with their Na 2 O (3.67–4.27 wt.%), Al 2 O 3 (16.19–16.80 wt.%), Y (14.1–16.5 ppm) contents and K 2 O/Na 2 O (0.87–1.12), Sr/Y (44.24–54.90), and La/Yb (36.80–43.88) ratios. Plagioclases as the main mineral phases show a wide range of compositions, and weak normal and reverse zoning. Hornblendes are generally edenite and pargasite (Mg#: 0.39–0.74). Clinopyroxenes are augite (Mg#: 0.58–0.76). Biotites have Mg# ranging from 0.45 to 0.66. The textural and compositional variations indicate disequilibrium crystallization possibly arising from magma mixing. The U–Pb zircon dating of the adakitic volcanics yielded 3.4–1.9 Ma. The studied rocks display moderate light rare earth element /heavy rare earth element ratios and enrichment in the lithophile element and depletion in high field strength element, implying that the parental magmas were derived from mantle sources previously enriched by slab-derived fluids and/or subducted sediments. The crystallization temperature and pressure estimations based on the clinopyroxene thermobarometry range from 1144 to 1186°C and from 3.92 to 7.97 kbar, respectively. Hornblende thermobarometry, oxygen fugacity, and hygrometer calculations yielded results as 908–993°C at a pressure of 2.87–5.22 kbar, water content of 4.4–8.4 wt.%, and relative oxygen fugacity (ΔNNO log units) of −0.6 to 0.9, respectively. Biotite thermobarometry suggests relatively higher oxygen fugacity conditions (10 –13.33 to 10 –17.60 ) at temperatures of 676–819°C and at pressures from 1.15 to 1.76 kbar. In the light of the obtained data and modelling, it can be concluded that the magmas of the adakitic volcanics were derived from enriched mantle source through relatively higher partial melting and experienced magma mixing with melts at the crustal level. Additionally, the fractional crystallization and assimilation-fractional crystallization processes may have played an important role during the evolution of the studied volcanics.

U-Pb geochronology, bulk-rock geochemistry and petrology of Late Cretaceous syenitic plutons in the Gölköy (Ordu) area (NE Turkey): Implications for magma generation in a continental arc extension triggered by slab roll-back

Temizel, İrfan; Arslan, Mehmet; Yücel, Cem; Yazar, Emel Abdioğlu; Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Aslan, Zafer

Late Cretaceous felsic plutons in the Eastern Pontides orogenic belt of Turkey are found in varying ages, sizes and compositions. The Late Cretaceous syenitic bodies, namely Direkli and Yeniköy Tepe plutons in the Ordu area, intruded into the Late Cretaceous volcanics and volcanoclastics, and compositionally consist of syenite and minor quartz-syenite with mainly granular and rarely porphyric, poikilitic and perthitic textures. The studied plutons contain K-feldspar, plagioclase, quartz, clinopyroxene, biotite and minor hornblende, and Fe-Ti oxide, apatite, and zircon. Mineral thermobarometer estimations imply that the syenitic plutons were crystallized in P-T conditions representing mid to shallow crustal levels. Petrochemically, these syenitic plutons show I-type, metaluminous-peraluminous transitional (A/CNK = 0.85–1.04) and shoshonitic features. LA-ICP-MS U-Pb zircon dating on the syenitic plutons yielded weighted mean ages of 78.5–72 Ma. Primitive mantle-normalized trace element patterns of the studied plutons are characterized by negative anomalies of Ba, Sr, Nb, Ta and Ti, and enrichment in Rb, Th, K, Ce and La. The chondrite-normalized rare earth element (REE) plots of the studied plutons show moderately enriched concave-shaped patterns (La N /Lu N = 10.3–10.7 for the Direkli pluton; La N /Lu N = 6.8–11.7 for the Yeniköy Tepe pluton) with negative Eu anomalies. The plutons have 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios (0.705368–0.706954), 143 Nd/ 144 Nd ratios (0.512600–0.512672), 206 Pb/ 204 Pb ratios (19.29–19.52) and 207 Pb/ 204 Pb ratios (15.65–15.67). The geochemical data, as well as regional geology, suggest that the Late Cretaceous syenitic plutons have formed in an extensional continental arc setting triggered by slab roll-back. The parental magma of syenitic plutons was derived from melts of lower crustal materials (metabasalt/metaandesite) and lithospheric mantle component.

Hamzaçebi, Coşkun; Es, Hüseyin Avni; Çakmak, Recep

Electricity is one of the most important end-user energy types in today’s world and has an effective role in development of societies and economies. Stability of electricity supply is provided by matching of generated and consumed electricity amount during the all-day. So, electricity consumption forecasting is an essential issue for electric utilities. In this study, the monthly electricity demand of Turkey has been predicted. To model the effects of seasonality and trend, four different ANN models have been developed and selected the superior one. In addition, the selected ANN model has been compared with SARIMA model in order to increase the acceptability and reliability of the ANN model. The monthly electricity demand of Turkey has been predicted between 2015 and 2018 via the ANN model that can make successful and high-accuracy predictions according to the performance measures. The forecasting values will help in determining the medium-term and stable energy policies.

Petrography, mineral chemistry and crystallization conditions of cenozoic plutonic rocks located to the north of Bayburt (Eastern Pontides, Turkey)

Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Yücel, Cem; Arslan, Mehmet; Sipahi, Ferkan; Temizel, Irfan; Çakmak, Gökhan; Güloglu, Z. Samet

The Eastern Pontides comprise many intrusive bodies varying in composition, size and age from Palaeozoic to Cenozoic. Especially Cenozoic aged bodies are commonly observed in the southern part, while they are rarely exposed in the northern part of the Eastern Pontides. In this study, the petrography and mineral chemistry of the Cenozoic aged Çiçekli, Somarova, Sorkunlu, Şaşurluk, Aydintepe, Kemerlikdagi and Pelitli plutons located to the north of Bayburt are determined, and the crystallisation conditions of the studied bodies were estimated by means of thermobarometer calculations. The studied plutons extend mostly in NE-SW directions and are approximately ellipsoid in shape. The contacts between the plutons and surrounding rocks are sharp, and plutons commonly contain mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) of different sizes. Petrographic and mineral chemistry studies reveal some disequilibrium textures reflecting the magma mixing process. Based on modal mineralogy, the plutonic rocks are gabbroic diorite, diorite, tonalite, granodiorite and monzogranite in composition. The rocks have fine to medium granular, porphyric, monzonitic, poikilitic, occasionally myrmekitic and micrographic textures. The main minerals are labradorite and albite (An68-02), magnesiohornblende and actinolite (Mg# = 0.6-0.9), diopside and augite (Wo44-46), clinoenstatite (En53-57) and Fe-Ti oxide minerals. Crystallization temperatures calculated from amphibole, biotite, clinopyroxene, magnetite and ilmenite minerals are 405°C to 1161°C, pressure values are 0.1 to 2.7 kbar, and oxygen fugacity (log10 fO2) is -20 to -12. Estimation of water content calculated by using amphiboles is between 2.9 and 6.8%. Based on obtained data, it is suggested that the studied plutons were emplaced at shallow depths (∼ 1-8 km).

Geochemical and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope characteristics of the Miocene to Pliocene volcanic rocks from the Kandilli (Erzurum) area, Eastern Anatolia (Turkey): Implications for magma evolution in extension-related origin

Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Aslan, Zafer; Aydınçakır, Emre; Yücel, Cem; Gücer, Mehmet Ali; Şen, Cüneyt

This paper presents Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic and whole-rock geochemical data of Miocene to Pliocene volcanic rocks in the Eastern Anatolia (Turkey) aiming to unravel their sources and evolutionary history. The wide compositional range of lavas and pyroclastics includes basaltic andesite, basaltic trachyandesite, trachyandesite, andesite and trachydacite. These calc-alkaline volcanics are enriched in large ion lithophile elements and light rare earth elements and depleted in the high field strength elements. Sr-Nd isotope data indicate low values for 87Sr/86Sr(i) (0.70432–0.70464) and high values for 143Nd/144Nd(i) (0.51272–0.51282). Further, these data are within the mantle array of the isotope ratio diagram. The lead (Pb) isotopic compositions (206Pb/204Pb(i) = 18.33 to 18.62, 207Pb/204Pb(i) = 15.51 to 15.60, 208Pb/204Pb(i) = 38.10 to 38.45) reveals the presence of an enriched source. The main petrological processes involved fractional crystallization and the mixing of at least two fractionated magmas having same source characteristics. All evidence supports the findings that the Kandilli volcanic rocks were derived from a partial melting of the both spinel and garnet bearing subcontinental lithospheric mantle, which had been previously metasomatized by mostly fluids derived from subducted slab during the collisional and post-collisional extension-related geodynamic setting in the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey.

Competitive positioning of winter tourism destinations: A comparative analysis of demand and supply sides perspectives–Cases from Turkey

    Evren, Savaş; Kozak, Nazmi

This study was conducted to determine the competitive positions of five winter tourism destinations in Turkey. The explanatory sequential mixed method was used in order to compare the views of both the supply and demand sides. A questionnaire was first applied to current and potential visitors of the related destinations (n = 417), both in the field and online, followed by semi-structured interviews conducted with destination stakeholders (n = 12). It was observed that visitor perceptions positioned Uludağ with its tourism superstructure means and entertainment opportunities, Kartalkaya with its tourism superstructure quality and service quality, Erciyes, with its reasonable pricing policy and uncrowded slopes/lifts, Palandöken with its adequate number of lifts and snow quality, and Kartepe, with its beautiful scenery and accessibility. The assessments of the destination stakeholders demonstrated that strategies for strengthening the current position was not accepted at every destination and that only some destination stakeholders were inclined toward repositioning.

Mineral chemistry, whole-rock geochemistry and petrology of Eocene I-type shoshonitic plutons in the Gölköy area (Ordu, NE Turkey)

Temizel, Irfan; Abdioǧlu Yazar, Emel; Arslan, Mehmet; Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Aslan, Zafer

The Eocene intermediate to felsic plutons are widespread in varying sizes and compositions throughout the Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt in NE Turkey. Of these, two monzonitic bodies (namely the Eriko Tepe and Göl Tepe Plutons) in the Gölköy (Ordu) area, extend nearly in the orientation of NWSE and E-W and were emplaced into the Upper Cretaceous and/or Eocene volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Petrographically, the studied monzonitic plutons are compositionally fine to medium grained monzonite, monzodiorite and subordinate quartz-monzonite. They consist of plagioclase (An35-67), K-feldspar (Or61-96), quartz, clinopyroxene (Wo28-49En35-51Fs10-25), biotite (Mg#: 0.53-0.73) ± hornblende (Mg#: 0.65-0.82), Fe-Ti oxide with monzonitic, poikilitic, perthitic, rare antirapakivi and graphic textures. Mineral thermobarometer estimations imply that the plutons were crystallized in P-T conditions of mid to shallow crustal levels. Petrochemically, these monzonitic plutons show post-collisional, I-type, metaluminous (A/CNK=0.76-0.93) and shoshonitic features. The wholerock major oxide and trace element variations suggest that fractionational crystallization played a significant role in the evolution of these monzonitic plutons. The primitive mantle-normalized trace element patterns of the studied plutons are similar to each other with enrichment in large ion lithophile elements, Th, Ce and negative Nb and Ti anomalies. Moreover, the chondrite-normalized rare earth element plots of the plutons show moderately enriched concave-shaped patterns (LaN/LuN=9.3-12.6) with negative Eu anomalies (EuN/Eu∗=0.69-0.84), all of which imply plagioclase and clinopyroxene ± hornblende fractionations during their evolution. The geochemical data suggest that the monzonitic plutons have evolved from parental magmas derived from the melts of enriched lithospheric mantle, in a post-collisional setting.

The effects of ownership concentration and institutional distance on the foreign entry ownership strategy of Turkish MNEs

Ilhan-Nas, Tulay; Okan, Tarhan; Tatoglu, Ekrem; Demirbag, Mehmet; Glaister, Keith W.

We investigate how ownership concentration and institutional distance both directly influence the equity-based ownership strategies of a sample of Turkish MNEs, and also how institutional differences moderate the link between ownership concentration and the equity-based ownership strategies of these firms. The findings suggest that neither ownership concentration nor institutional distance significantly affects the level of equity ownership. Although institutional distance variables have no direct effects on equity ownership, they tend to moderate the relationships between the ownership concentration and foreign equity ownership strategy of Turkish MNEs. In particular, we provide evidence that the regulative and normative dimensions of institutional distance affect the strength of the relationships between equity ownership strategy of MNEs and ownership concentration more so than the cognitive dimension of institutional distance.

Calculation of the Index of Turkey's Vulnerability in Natural Disasters

    Bostan, Sedat; Yaprak, Unal

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the vulnerability levels of Turkey in terms of natural disasters and to guide decision makers and strategists in this field. In the study, disaster data obtained for 1987-2011 were used, and the disaster of type was most observed in our country. Materials and Methods: Data vulnerability indices against the disasters were calculated using a Data Envelopment Analysis Program (DEAP) 2.1 program with a Data envelopment analysis-based output-oriented Malmquist Total Factor Productivity Index method. Results: The regions of Turkey, which have the highest vulnerability index for the disasters, were TRA2 (0.323), TRB2 (0.305), and TRB1 (0.287) regions. In addition, it was seen that in the Black Sea region, the TR82 (0.267) region was more vulnerable than the other places of the region. In this study, a picture of the whole country over a period of 25 years in terms of disasters was captured. Conclusion: In the picture, it is seen that economic and social costs endured due to disasters are separated into two regions starting from the region of Eastern Anatolia and the north branch extends across the Black Sea region and the other south branch reaches to the Mediterranean.

The Relationship Between Price Level and Fiscal Policy in Turkey: An Econometrical Analysis of the FTPL Approach

    Bölükbas, Mehmet; Peker, Osman

The aim of this study is to investigate the Fiscal Theory of Price Level (FTPL) approach for Turkey and to determine whether monetary and fiscal policy shows a dominant regime characteristic. In this context, an empirical analysis was performed by using 2006: Q1-2015: Q4 period data with the help of Johansen Cointegration Method. According to the results of empirical analysis, it has been determined that fiscal policy is an effective policy in determining the price level in Turkey in the mentioned period because a unit change in the primary budget balance led to an increase of 4,33 units in the general price level. This finding suggests that the FTPL approach is valid for Turkey in the period 2006-2015 and fiscal policy shows the dominant regime characteristic in Turkey in the mentioned period.

Radioactivity measurements and risk assessments of spa waters in some areas in Turkey

Duran, Selcen Uzun; Kucukomeroglu, Belgin; Damla, Nevzat; Taskin, Halim; Celik, Necati; Cevik, Uğur; Ersoy, Hakan

The current study presents the results of the activity of radionuclides in spa waters, and evaluates their radiological influences on the population consuming these waters in the Central and Eastern Black Sea regions of Turkey. Since these waters are used for therapy and consumption purposes unconsciously, their radiological impact on the people was computed by taking into consideration the annual intake through ingestion of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, 137Cs and 222Rn. The mean activities were estimated to be 11.35 for gross alpha, 6.23 for gross beta, 2.96 for 226Ra, 0.42 for 232Th, 0.069 for 137Cs, 0.19 for 40K, and 267 Bq L–1 for 222Rn, respectively. The estimated effective doses from spa water were found to be 49.77 µSv a–1 (226Ra), 5.95 µSv a–1 (232Th), 0.07 µSv a–1 (137Cs), 0.83 µSv a–1 (40K) and 56.03 µSv a–1 (222Rn). These values were evaluated and compared with related verified values from literature. Also, physico-chemical characterizations of spa water samples considered in the current study were investigated. This study would be useful for consumers and official authorities for the assessment of radiation exposure risk due to usage of the considered spa waters.

Diversity and ecology of benthic diatoms in karagöl lake in karagöl-Sahara national park (Şavşat, Artvin, Turkey)

    Akar, Bülent; Şahin, Bülent

The main goal of this study is to determine the composition, diversity and ecology of benthic diatoms in Karagöl Lake in Karagöl-Sahara National Park. Monthly sampling (from sediments, stones and aquatic plants in littoral zone of the lake) taken in three consecutive years revealed 57 diatom taxa with Gomphonema and Pinnularia being the most abundant species while other genera are represented with three or fewer species. Lindavia ocellata was the most dominant taxon in the samplings examined throughout the whole study. The values of diversity and evenness indices are high during the spring and early summer. Based on cluster analysis for monthly samples of epipelic diatom, there are two different groups at the lowest similarity level. The associations between August 2010 and September 2010 months are the most significant with 86.02%. The organism number of epipelic diatoms showed positive correlation (P<0.01) with dissolved oxygen, while negative correlation (P<0.05) with temperature. Detailed floristic and ecological examination of the benthic diatom communities has not been carried out before this study in this lake. Therefore, this study is the first to our knowledge towards revealing aquatic benthic diatom biodiversity of Karagöl-Sahara National Park and provides basis for future investigations.
