Dogan, Nilgun; Adanacioglu, Hakan
Geographical indications (GIs) are defined as labels that show the relationship of a product with a certain region. They are of great importance in terms of distinguishing these products from the similar ones in terms of the quality that the characteristic features of the region bring to the product, making them stand out commercially, contributing to the rural development and preserving the cultural heritage. Dry beans cultivated by the farmers in the Gümüşhane province is newly recognized as a GI product that is unique in both taste and quality. This study is intended to identify the factors affecting the farmers’ decision to produce GI-labelled dry beans. The survey was conducted in January–March 2021. A sampling size of the participants consisted of 50 farmers who cultivated GI-labelled dry beans and 50 non-GI dry beans. A binary logistic regression analysis approach was employed to identify the factors affecting the likelihood of the farmers cultivating the GI dry beans. The results of the model indicate that the young farmers with the low educational level, the low property land size, the low yield per decare, and the large farmland, the high annual agricultural income and specializing in the dry beans production are more likely to engage in the production of GI dry beans. For the farms involving the GI product, agricultural associations can be advised with the farmers with the wider agricultural acreage and the high annual agricultural income, and that specialize in the production of such products. The participation of the farmers in the agriculture enterprises involving the GI dry beans will depend on them seeing positive widespread effects, which requires a long-term commitment.

Dogan, Nilgun
This study aims to present the economic impact of the production of local Geographical Indication (GI) products on producers based on the example of GI Kelkit sugar (dry) beans. Kelkit sugar beans, which are cultivated using local seeds, are legume products with white seeds and pink spots. Sugar beans grown around the Kelkit district of Gümüşhane were registered as a geographical indication product by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TPO) in 2020. This study seeks to answer the question of how the production of Kelkit sugar beans, which are mainly marketed with a geographical indication label, affects producer welfare. The target group of the research consists of farmers living in the Kelkit, Siran, and Kose districts of Gümüşhane who use GI-labelled seeds and do not use GI-labelled seeds in beans production. Propensity Score Matching was employed to determine the economic impact of the production of local geographical indication products on producers. The results indicate that the agricultural enterprises participating in the Kelkit sugar beans production program using geographical indication seeds have lower gross output and gross profit per unit area than those who did not participate in the program.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Consumers’ willingness to pay for traditional products with geographical indication: a case study on pestil from Gümüşhane, Turkey
Dogan, Nilgun; Adanacioglu, Hakan
The main purpose of this study is to analyze the willingness to pay (WTP) geographical indications (GI)-labelled pestil as a traditional product. Considering the data obtained from a survey conducted with 166 households in Gümüşhane, Turkey were used. Contingent valuation method was taken to determine WTP for GI-labelled pestil (dried fruit pulp). In order to find WTP price amounts Tobit model was used. Tobit model showed that individuals who were in the upper age group, have a high frequency of purchasing pestil, have a high level of knowledge about GI-labelled products, and consume GI-labelled products want to consume more. The average amount that consumers will be willing to pay for 1 kg of price bids ranging from 60-100 TRY has been determined as 68.74 TRY. While establishing a target market, those who are in the upper age group, have a high frequency of purchasing pestil, have a high level of knowledge and consume GI-labelled products should be taken into consideration. Since individuals with a high level of knowledge regarding GI-labelled products are willing to pay a higher amount of extra payment, it is recommended that marketers carry out promotional activities that will increase communute awareness for GI-labelled products.

Dogan, Nilgun; Adanacioglu, Hakan
The main purpose of this study is to determine the economic performance of the beekeeping farms. For this purpose, a survey was done in Kelkit County, in northeastern Turkey. The performances of the beekeeping farms were evaluated by cost, profitability and efficiency analysis. The cost of a unit of honey was US$3.16 and the average price paid to the beekeepers was US$6.78. The absolute and relative profits were calculated as US$3.62 and US$2.14, respectively. The efficiency of the beekeeping farms was measured using Data Envelopment Analysis. The results of output- and input-oriented constant return-to-scale (CRS) analysis indicated an average efficiency value of 59.34%. The output- and input-oriented variable return-to-scale (VRS) analysis showed average efficiencies of 75.42% and 78.95%, respectively. The efficiency of the beekeeping farms and the beekeeping experience were positively correlated. Both the output- and input-oriented VRS analysis showed that a significant part of the beekeeping farms would approach full effectiveness with a potential improvement of at least 10% both in gross production value, number of hives and variable costs. Improvement suggestions for outputs and inputs are directed towards reduction of all variables except gross production value. Copyright 2021 Zoological Society of Pakistan.
