The Eastern Pontide Orogenic Belt (EPOB) hosts numerous plutonic bodies with different dimensions, compositions and ages ranging from Paleozoic to Late Eocene in NE Turkey. U-Pb zircon dating suggests that the Arslandede pluton crystallized at 44.50 ± 0.29 Ma, corresponding to the Lutetian (Middle Eocene) period. Rocks of this pluton have monzonitic character, with compositions ranging from monzodiorite to granite (SiO2 = 49˗71 wt%). The studied monzonitic rocks have I-type, metaluminous and shoshonitic character and are enriched in large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs). The rare earth elements (REEs) have concave up shape (LaN/YbN = 6.64–11.57) and show negative to slightly positive Eu anomalies (EuN/Eu* = 0.37–1.24). 87Sr/86Sr(i) values of 0.704801–0.705102 and εNd(i) values of 1.01–1.34 correspond to the mantle series on isotope ratio diagrams. Positive εHf(i) values (5.01–14.91) plot between the depleted mantle and the chondritic evolution lines. The petrological features of the rocks from the Arslandede pluton show that fractional crystallization with low rates of assimilation and/or magma mixing were effective during crystallization. All data show that the magma source of the pluton derived from an enriched lithospheric mantle and emplaced into the crust after differentiation in a deep seated magma chamber contaminated by relatively small proportions of crustal rocks.

The Eastern Pontides orogenic belt in NE Turkey hosts numerous I-type plutons of Eocene epoch. Here, we report new U–Pb SHRIMP zircon ages and in situ zircon Lu-Hf isotopes along with bulk-rock geochemical and Sr-Nd-Pb-O isotope data from the Kemerlikdağı, Aydıntepe and Pelitli plutons and mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) to constrain their parental melt source(s) and evolutionary processes. U-Pb SHRIMP zircon dating yielded crystallization ages between 45 and 44 Ma for the studied plutons and their MMEs. The plutons range from gabbro to granite and have I-type, medium to high-K calc-alkaline, and metaluminous to slightly peraluminous characteristics. On the primitive mantle-normalized multi-trace-element variations, the plutons and their MMEs are characterized by significant enrichment in LILE/HFSE. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns of the plutons and their MMEs are close to each other and show moderate enrichment with variable negative Eu anomalies. The studied plutons have fairly homogeneous isotope composition (87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.70502 to 0.70560; εNd(i) = +0.9 to–1.4; δ18O = +5.0 to +8.7‰, εHf(i) =–2.2 to +13.5). The MMEs show medium to high-K calc-alkaline and metaluminous character. Although the isotope signatures of the MMEs (87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.70508 to 0.70542; εNd(i) = +0.9 to −1.1; δ18O = +5.8 to +8.0, εHf(i) = +4.3 to +10.4) are very similar to those of the host rocks. Fractionation of plagioclase, amphibole, pyroxene and Fe-Ti oxides played an important role in the evolution of the plutons. The isotopic composition of the studied plutons and MMEs are similar to I-type plutons derived from mantle sources. The MMEs show incomplete magma mixing/mingling, representing small bodies of mafic parental magma. The parental magma(s) of the studied plutons were generated from the enriched lithospheric mantle and then modified by fractional crystallisation, and lesser assimilation and mixing/mingling in the crustal magma chambers.

Middle-Late Jurassic Cimmerian events in Turkey have been actively discussed in the past three decades, but proposed tectonic models associated with magmatism, metamorphism, and stratigraphic features remain controversial. To address this issue, Upper Jurassic mafic lavas are investigated at three locations (Alucra, Gumushane, and Olur) in the eastern Sakarya Zone, northeastern Turkey. These lavas are submarine and form planar flows parallel with the bedding plane in the Upper Jurassic carbonate sequence near the base or just below in the clastic sedimentary rocks. The basaltic lavas show calc-alkaline features and possess Nb-Ta values and Nb/U, Nb/La, and Ce/Pb ratios that are greater than those of island arc basalts. Multielement patterns are almost hump shaped, similar to ocean island basalts, which experience Pb depletion and weak negative Nb-Ta, Zr-Hf, and Ti anomalies. The low initial (Sr-87/Sr-86) ratios (0.70372-0.70554), positive initial epsilon(Nd) values (+2.7 to +4.4), and initial Pb isotope ratios that plot between mid-ocean-ridge and ocean island basalts are consistent with a melt derived from subcontinental lithospheric mantle, metasomatized by earlier fluids from subducted sediments and plume materials from the asthenosphere. Moderate Dy/Yb ratios with an average value of 1.8 imply partial melting in the spinel-garnet transition zone at depths of similar to 70-100 km. Slab breakoff is suggested as a geodynamic mechanism that accounts for these geochemical signatures. This inference is also favored by stratigraphic and sedimentologic evidence from the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, which is consistent with short-lived vertical (epirogenic) movements in the region. Lower-Middle Jurassic sequences are transgressive, suggesting that subduction-related extension opened a backarc basin (Neotethys) in the south of the Sakarya Zone. Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous carbonates point tectonically to tranquility during carbonate deposition in the Neotethys Ocean, which seems to have been achieved by complete closure of the Paleotethys in the north. About 15-20 m.yr. later (Kimmeridgian), after first carbonate deposition, intraplate-typemafic lavas ascended up to the shelf surface of the Neotethys. This was followed by formation of disconformity surfaces and then accumulation of coarse clastic sediments. All this points to a short-lived epirogenic movement that we ascribe to the breakoff of the southward-subducting Paleotethyan oceanic lithosphere in the Late Jurassic.

Late Cretaceous I-type plutons are widespread in the Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey. The studied Camiboǧazi pluton is a composite pluton consisting of diorite, tonalite, monzodiorite, monzonite, quartz monzonite, granite, and mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs). Laser ablation ICP-MS U-Pb dating of zircon yielded crystallization ages of 76.21±0.79Ma, 75.65±0.50Ma, 75.04±0.83Ma, and 74.73±0.86Ma for diorite, monzodiorite, monzonite, and granite, respectively. The rocks of the pluton have I-type, high-K to shoshonitic and metaluminous character, displaying whole-rock geochemical features of arc-related granites. They are enriched in large-ion lithophile and light rare-earth elements, and depleted in high-field-strength elements. Major element variations can be attributed to fractionation of plagioclase, clinopyroxene, hornblende, and Fe-Ti oxides. The rocks show considerable variation in 87Sr/86Sr(i) (0.70498 to 0.70622), εNd(i) (-2.79 to -0.36), δ18O values (+6.3 to +11.4) and Nd model ages (TDM) (0.81Ga to 1.26Ga). Besides, they have (206Pb/204Pb)=18.44-19.09, (207Pb/204Pb)=15.64-15.69, and (208Pb/204Pb)=38.37-38.89. Although isotope signatures of the mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) (87Sr/86Sr(i)=0.70551 to 0.70622; εNd(i)=-2.9 to -1.23; δ18O=+8.3 to +9.7) are largely similar to the host rocks, MMEs are characterized by relatively high Mg-numbers (32-36), low contents of SiO2 (52-56wt.%) and low ASI (0.7-0.9). Estimated crystallization temperatures for the rocks of the pluton range from 735±58°C to 844±24°C and a shallow intrusion depth (<10km) is estimated from Al-in-hornblende thermobarometry. Whole-rock geochemical and isotopic data suggest magma generation by dehydration melting of an amphibolite-type lower crustal component with additional input of a subcontinental lithospheric mantle component. Furthermore, Sr-Nd isotope mixing model reveals ~30% to 40% lower crustal magma contribution to the mantle component.
- MakaleYalnız künye2013Post-collisional adakitic volcanism in the eastern part of the Sakarya Zone, Turkey: Evidence for slab and crustal melting
Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Uysal, Ibrahim; Siebel, Wolfgang; Turan, Mehmet; Duncan, Robert; Akçay, Miǧraç
New geochemical and isotopic data for post-collisional Early Eocene and Late Miocene adakitic rocks from the eastern part of the Sakarya Zone, Turkey, indicate that slab and lower crustal melting, respectively, played key roles in the petrogenesis of these rocks. The Early Eocene Yoncali{dotless}k dacite (54.4 Ma) exhibits high Sr/Y and La/Yb ratios, low Y and HREE concentrations, moderate Mg# (44-65), and relatively high εNd and low ISr values, similar to adakites formed by slab melting associated with subduction. Geochemical composition of the Yoncali{dotless}k dacite cannot be explained by simple crystal fractionation and/or crustal contamination of andesitic parent magma, but is consistent with the participation of different proportions of melts derived from subducted basalt and sediments. Sr/Y correlates horizontally with Rb/Y, and Pb/Nd correlates vertically with Nd isotopic composition, indicating that Sr and Pb budgets are strongly controlled by melt addition from the subducting slab, whereas positive correlations between Th/Nd and Pb/Nd, and Rb/Y and Nb/Y point to some contribution of sediment melt. In addition to low concentrations of heavy rare earth elements (~2-3 times chondrite), a systematic decrease in their concentrations and Nb/Ta ratios with increasing SiO2 contents suggests that slab partial melting occurred in the garnet stability field and that these elements were mobilized by fluid flux. These geochemical and isotopic signatures are best explained by slab breakoff and fusion shortly after the initiation of collision. Although the Late Micone Tavdaǧi{dotless} rhyolite (8.75 Ma) has some geochemical features identical to adakites, such as high Sr/Y and La/Yb ratios, low Y and HREE concentrations, other requirements, such as sodic andesite and/or dacite with relatively high MgO and Mg# (>50), relatively high Ni and Cr, low K2O/Na2O (<0.4), high Sr (>400 ppm), for slab-derived adakites are not provided. It is sodic in composition and shows no traces of fractionation from dacitic parent magma. Low Nd and high Sr isotope ratios suggest derivation by partial fusion of calc-alkaline, juvenile crust with high Sr/Y and La/Yb ratios.
- MakaleYalnız künye2012Geochronological evidence and tectonic significance of Carboniferous magmatism in the southwest Trabzon area, eastern Pontides, Turkey
Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Arslan, Mehmet; Siebel, Wolfgang; Sipahi, Ferkan; Ilbeyli, Nurdane
The northern and southern zones of the eastern Pontides (northeast Turkey) contain numerous plutons of varying ages and compositions. Geochemical and isotopic results on two Hercynian granitoid bodies located in the northern zone of the eastern Pontides allow a proper reconstruction of their origin for the first time. The intrusive rocks comprise four distinct bodies, two of which we investigated in detail. Based on LA-ICP-MS U-Pb zircon dating, the Derinoba and Kayadibi granites have similar 206Pb/ 238U versus 207Pb/ 235U Concordia ages of 311.1 2.0 and 317.2 3.5 million years for the former and 303.8 1.5 million years for the latter. Aluminium saturation index values of both granites are between 0.95 and 1.35, indicating dominant peraluminous melt compositions. Both intrusions have high SiO 2 (74-77 wt.%) contents and show high-K calc-alkaline and I-to S-type characteristics. Primitive mantle-normalized element diagrams display enrichment in K, Rb, Th, and U, and depletion in Ba, Nb, Ta, Sr, P, and Ti. Chondrite-normalized rare earth element patterns are characterized by concave-upward shapes and pronounced negative Eu anomalies with L acn/Y bcn=4.6-9.7 and E ucn/Eu*=0.11-0.59 (Derinoba), and L acn/Y bcn=2.7-5.5 and E ucn/Eu*=0.31-0.37 (Kayadibi). These features imply crystal-melt fractionation of plagioclase and K-feldspar without significant involvement of garnet. The Derinoba samples have initial Nd values between-6.1 and-7.1 with Nd model ages and T DM between 1.56 and 2.15 thousand million years. The Kayadibi samples show higher initial Nd (I) values,-4.5 to-6.2, with Nd model ages between 1.50 and 1.72 thousand million years. This study demonstrates that the Sr isotope ratios generally display negative correlation with Nd isotopes; Sr isotope ratios were lowered in some samples by hydrothermal interaction or alteration. Isotopic and petrological data suggest that both granites were produced by the partial melting of early Palaeozoic lower crustal rocks, with minor contribution from the mantle. Collectively, these rocks represent a late stage of Hercynian magmatism in the eastern Pontides.

Major, trace element, K -Ar age and Sr-Nd isotopic data are presented for the Eocene Torul volcanics in the eastern Pontide orogenic belt (NE Turkey). The studied rocks are composed of basaltic andesitic, andesitic, trachyandesitic, and minor trachydacitic lavas associated with their pyroclastics. These rocks contain plagioclase (An2-44), hornblende (Mg#= 0.78-0.98), clinopyroxene (Wo43-46 En41-43 Fs10-15), biotite, quartz, and minor sanidine phenocrysts. K-Ar ages on hornblendes ages range from 43.99 (±2.59) to 33.45 (±2.32) Ma, within the Middle to Late Eocene. The volcanic rocks show calc-alkaline affinities and have medium to high K contents. They are enriched in large ion lithophile (LILE) and light rare earth elements (LREE), with pronounced depletion of high field strength elements (HFSE). The chondrite-normalized REE patterns (Lacn/Lucn= 4.0-9.8) show low to medium enrichment, indicating similar sources for the rock suite. Initial 87Sr/86Sr values vary between 0.70457 and 0.70511 and initial 143Nd/144Nd values between 0.51264 and 0.51278. The main solidification processes involved in the evolution of the volcanics consist of fractional crystallization with minor amounts of crustal contamination ± magma mixing. All evidence supports the conclusion that the parental magma(s) of the rocks probably derived from an enriched upper mantle, previously modified by subduction- induced metasomatism in a post-collisional geodynamic setting.

Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Siebel, Wolfgang; Ilbeyli, Nurdane; Arslan, Mehmet; Satir, Muharrem; Şen, Cüneyt
Convergent plate margins are the most intense areas of granitoid magmatism on Earth. The Eastern Pontide Magmatic Belt in NE Turkey represents a paleo-arc with numerous quartz diorite to syenite intrusions, ranging in age from 142 to 56 Ma and being composed of K-feldspar, plagioclase, quartz, pyroxene, hornblende, biotite, and Fe-Ti oxides. The granitoids exhibit low- to high-K calc-alkaline, metaluminous to slightly peraluminous I-type features and contain abundant mafic magmatic enclaves (MME). They are characteristically enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and light rare earth elements (LREE) relative to high field strength elements (HFSE). Chondrite-normalized REE patterns are fractionated (LaN/LuN= 1.49-17.4) with pronounced negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.46-1.77). Initial 87SrZ86Sr values are between 0.7056 and 0.7079, and εNd(1) values between -5.3 and 1.6. Fractional crystallization, magma mixing/mingling and crustal contamination played an important role during magma evolution. All these characteristics, combined with the low values of K2O/Na2O, Mg-number, ASI and ratios Of Al 2O3/ (FeOT+MgO+TiO2) and (Na 2O+K2O)/(FeOT+MgO+TiO2), suggest an origin by dehydration melting of mafic (amphibolitic) or tonalitic lower crustal source rocks.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2009U-Pb SHRIMP zircon ages, geochemical and Sr-Nd isotopic compositions of the late cretaceous I-type Sariosman pluton, Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey
Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Chen, Bin; Aslan, Zafer; Siebel, Wolfgang; Şen, Cüneyt
The petrogenesis and U-Pb SHRIMP zircon ages of the Late Cretaceous Sariosman pluton in the Eastern Pontides is investigated by means of whole-rock Sr-Nd isotope data with field, petrographic and whole-rock geochemical studies. The bulk of the I-type Sariosman pluton consists of biotite-hornblende monzogranite, with minor quantities of porphyritic hornblende-biotite monzogranite. The biotite-hornblende monzogranite contains a number of mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) of quartz monzodiorite composition. U-Pb zircon sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe dating (SHRIMP) dates the magma emplacement age of the biotite-hornblende monzogranite at 82.7±1.5 Ma. The rocks of the pluton show high-K calc-alkaline, metaluminous to slightly peraluminous characteristics, and are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and light rare earth elements (LREE) relative to high field strength elements (HFSE), thus displaying features of arc-related granitoids. Chondrite-normalised rare earth-element (REE) patterns have concave upward shapes (Lacn/Lucn= 10.1-17.4) with pronounced negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu*= 0.61-0.80). Initial εNd values vary between -3.0 and -4.1 and initial 87Sr/86Sr values between 0.7062 and 0.707. The MMEs are characterised by higher Mg-numbers (27-29) and lower values of both SiO2 (56-58 wt%) and aluminium saturation index (0.9-1.0), compared to the monzogranites. Fractionation of plagioclase, hornblende and Fe-Ti oxides played an important role in the evolution of the Sariosman pluton. The crystallisation temperatures of the melts ranged from 700 to 800 °C and a relatively shallow intrusion depth (~2 to 7 km) is estimated from the Al-in-hornblende geobarometry. The geochemical and isotopic compositions of the Sariosman pluton suggest an origin through dehydration melting of mafic lower crustal source rocks.
- MakaleYalnız künye2008Petrochemistry and petrology of I-type granitoids in an arc setting: The composite Torul pluton, Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey
Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Siebel, Wolfgang; Şen, Cüneyt; Satir, Muharrem
The Upper Cretaceous Torul pluton, located in the Eastern Pontides, is of sub-alkaline affinity and displays features typical of volcanic arc granitoids. It is a composite pluton consisting of granodiorite, biotite hornblende monzogranite, quartz monzodiorite, quartz monzonite and hornblende biotite monzogranite. The oldest syenogranite (77.9 ± 0.3 Ma) and the youngest quartz diorite form small stocks within the pluton. Samples from the granodiorites, biotite hornblende monzogranites, quartz monzodiorites, quartz monzonites and hornblende biotite monzogranites have SiO2 between 57 and 68 wt% and display high-K calc-alkaline, metaluminous to peraluminous characteristics. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns are fractionated Lacn/Lucn = 6.0-14.2) with pronounced negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.59-0.84). Initial εNd(i) values vary between -3.1 and -4.1, initial 87Sr/86 Sr values between 0.7058 and 0.7072, and δ18O values between +4.4 and +7.3‰. The quartz diorites are characterized by relatively high Mg-number of 36-38, low contents of Na2O (2.3-2.5 wt%) and SiO2 (52-55 wt%) and medium-K calc-alkaline, metaluminous composition. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns are relatively flat [(La/Yb)cn = 2.8-3.3; (Tb/Yb)cn = 1.2] and show small negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu*= 0.74-0.76). Compared to the other rock types, radiogenic isotope signatures of the quartz diorites show higher 87Sr/ 86Sr (0.7075-0.7079) and lower εNd(i) (-4.5 to -5.3). The syenogranites have high SiO2 (70-74 wt%) and display high-K calc-alkaline, peraluminous characteristics. Their REE patterns are characterized by higher Lacn/Lucn (12.9) and Eu/Eu* (0.76-0.77) values compared to the quartz diorites. Isotopic signatures of these rocks [εNd(i) = -4.0 to -3.3; 87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.7034-0.7060; δ18 O = + 4.9 to + 8.2] are largely similar to the other rock types but differ from that of the quartz diorites. Fractionation of plagioclase, hornblende, pyroxene and Fe'Ti oxides played an important role in the evolution of Torul granitoids. The crystallization temperatures of the melts ranged from 800 to 900°C as determined from zircon and apatite saturation thermometry. All these characteristics, combined with low K2 O/Na2O, low Al2O3/(FeOT + MgO + TiO2), and low (Na2O + K2O)/ (FeOT + MgO + TiO2) ratios suggest an origin through dehydration melting of mafic lower crustal source rocks.
