Electricity Prices, Technology, Productivity, And Environmental Degradation: Implications For Financial Stability

Çakir, Mehmet Ali; Ökte, Mehmet Kutlughan Savas

The limited availability of fossil fuels and the financial pressure they create for countries that do not have the resources have led countries to search for new energy sources. In particular, renewable energy sources and therefore electrical energy obtained from these sources have been proposed in the literature as an alternative to fossil fuels. Thus, this study investigates the impact of electricity prices on financial stability in European Union countries from 2010 to 2021 using Driscoll Kraay fixed effects estimation. Financial stability is measured using the bank z-score, while productivity-intensive technology, environmental quality, and economic growth are included as control variables. The findings indicate that an increase in electricity prices negatively affects the bank z-score. In contrast, productivity-intensive technology positively impacts the bank z-score. Similarly, environmental quality contributes to an increase in the bank z-score. Additionally, economic growth enhances financial stability. Considering that rising electricity prices negatively affect financial stability, policymakers should encourage companies to produce electricity from renewable sources, such as solar panels or wind turbines. This can be supported through incentives such as tax breaks or low-cost financing for firms investing in on-site renewable energy systems. In this way, electricity price fluctuations will have less impact on companies and, in turn, help protect financial stability.

What is the Contribution of Green Innovation and Digitalization to Economic Growth: Analyzing the Role of Geopolitical Risks and

    Agirkaya, Melahat Batu; Akyol, Hikmet

This research examines the impact of green innovation and digitalization on economic growth in Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and T & uuml;rkiye (BRICS+T) during the period 2002-2021. Within this framework, it analyzes the role of geopolitical risks and climate policy uncertainty. The relationships between variables were estimated using Pooled Bewley (CPS-BP), Dynamic Least Squares Mean Group (DOLS-MG), Fully Modified Least Squares (FMOLS), Canonical Cointegrated Regression (CCR), and Dynamic Least Squares (DOLS) estimators. Our results show that green innovation, digitalization, information technologies, infrastructure investments, life expectancy at birth, and US-originated climate policy uncertainties positively impacted economic growth. Increased geopolitical risks hindered growth in BRICS+T countries.

Energy Consumption in the EU: The Role of Productivity and Efficiency-Driven Technology; [AB’de Enerji Tüketimi: Üretkenlik ve Verimlilik Odaklı Teknolojinin Rolü]

Çakır, Mehmet Ali; Ökte, Mehmet Kutluğhan Savaş

This study investigates how productivity and productivity-intensive technologies affect energy consumption in selected EU countries from 1996 to 2021. Despite technological progress, fossil fuels still dominate, posing environmental and economic concerns. Using the AMG method, results show that multifactor productivity significantly reduces energy use, while productivity-intensive technologies offer smaller but meaningful reductions. In contrast to prior research linking technology to higher energy demand, this study highlights the importance of efficiency-focused innovation. Findings support the EU’s 2030 energy reduction target and suggest policymakers should prioritise productivity-intensive technologies, on-the-job training, and digital tools to decouple growth from energy consumption.

Analyzing the impact of economic growth and FDI on sustainable development goals in China: insights from ecological footprints and load capacity factors

Güler, Ilkay; Naimoglu, Mustafa; Simsek, Orhan; Adali, Zafer; Özbek, Sefa

This study investigates the impact of economic growth and foreign direct investment (FDI) on China's sustainable development goals (SDGs), specifically Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Life Below Water (SDG 14), and Life on Land (SDG 15). It examines ecological footprints and load capacity factors (LCFs) in cropland, fishing, forest, and grazing land using Fourier bootstrap autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) cointegration analysis and fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) estimators. The study covers the period from 1979 to 2022. Key findings reveal that while GDP and FDI often exacerbate environmental degradation, urbanization and value-added agriculture, forestry, and fishing (FAFGDP) improve sustainability in some areas. The study confirms the pollution haven hypothesis for most models, suggesting that China's legal and regulatory frameworks may inadequately mitigate FDI's adverse environmental effects. The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis is not supported as GDP growth generally increases ecological footprints. However, trade openness and urbanization show positive influences on environmental sustainability. Policy recommendations include enhancing energy efficiency, promoting renewable energy, implementing green technologies in agriculture and urban development, and revising FDI policies to incentivize environmentally friendly practices. These strategies are crucial for achieving China's sustainable development goals and mitigating the pressures of human activities on natural resources.

An Analysis on The Relationship of Organic Honey Production and The Number of Producers with Growth, Employment, and Agricultural Employment in Türkiye; [Türkiye’de Organik Bal Üretimi ve Üretici Sayısı ile Büyüme, İstihdam ve Tarımsal İstihdam Arasındaki İlişkinin Tespitine Yönelik Bir Analiz]

    Merdan, Kurtuluş

The growing world population has driven humanity to produce more food, potentially leading to the neglect of quality and safety in food production. Evolving life conditions and technological progress have altered the consciousness level of humanity, bringing about new demands in some communities due to high income. Organic beekeeping has developed within this structure and tends to flourish as a model in Türkiye. Organic beekeeping has increased the income from beekeeping. It is practiced in natural unspoiled areas with no conventional feeding and chemical pesticides and requires supervising all processes through inspection and certification. Besides organic honey, the most common organic beekeeping product, organic bee products include bee pollen, propolis, royal jelly, beeswax, and bee venom. This study presents the economic analysis of organic honey production volume in Türkiye. For this purpose, the short and long-term relationships of organic honey production and the number of producers with economic growth, employment, and agricultural employment were analyzed. In addition, organic honey production and the number of organic honey producers were examined as driving forces for growth, employment, and agricultural employment. In this context, annual time series data between 2004 and 2022 were used as the sample. According to the analysis, organic honey production, an independent variable, had no long-term relationship with employment and agricultural employment variables, whereas it had a long-term relationship with the growth variable. The number of organic honey producers, another independent variable, was found to have no long-run relationship with the employment variable; however, it had a long-term relationship with the growth and agricultural employment variables. The findings of the study indicated that organic honey production did not drive growth, employment, or agricultural employment. On the other hand, the number of organic honey producers led to growth, yet not to employment or agricultural employment.

Drivers of the Load Capacity Factor in New İndustrialized Countries: Economic Growth, Financial Development and Urbanization on Load Capacity Factor

Durmus, Savas; Agırkaya, Melahat Batu; Akyol, Hikmet

This study examines the effects of economic growth, financial development, and urbanization on the load capacity factor (LCF) for Newly Industrialized Countries (NICs) over the period 1991-2021. In this context, we analyzed the relationship between the variables using the Fixed Effects Driscoll-Kraay and Fixed Effects Panel Quantile estimators. The estimation results indicate that across all quantiles (low, medium, and high levels of environmental degradation), economic growth has a positive effect on LCF, while the squared term of economic growth has a negative effect. Urbanization and renewable energy consumption positively impact LCF, whereas financial development and labor force participation rates have negative effects. The positive effects of urbanization and renewable energy consumption on LCF become more pronounced in higher quantiles. Conversely, the negative impact of labor force participation on LCF is stronger in higher quantiles. The negative effect of financial development on LCF, however, becomes statistically insignificant at higher quantiles.

The relationship between CO2 emissions, renewable energy and economic growth in the US: evidence from symmetric and asymmetric spectral granger causality analysis

    Zuhal, Mustafa; Göcen, Serdar

This study analyzes the relationship between renewable energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and economic growth for 1973:M01-2022:M06 in the USA. The study employs Spectral Granger Causality analysis symmetrically and asymmetrically. The symmetric causality test presents a bidirectional causality relationship between CO2 emissions, renewable energy consumption, and economic growth. Regarding asymmetric causality results, there is bidirectional causality between positive and negative shocks of CO2 emissions, renewable energy consumption, and economic growth. The results suggest that renewable energy consumption is essential in increasing sustainable economic growth and environmental quality for the USA.

Future of Clean Cooking Energy Access in Emerging Economies by 2030

Cakir, Mehmet Ali; Unlu, Ramazan; Cakir, Sümeyra Cay; Xanthopoulos, Petros

This study assesses the future of clean energy and technology access for cooking in emerging economic blocs—BRICS, MINT, ASEAN, and MENA—through 2030. Cooking contributes 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with over half of household emissions coming from cooking. Therefore, clean cooking energy is critical for sustainability and human health. The study aims to evaluate the likelihood of achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal of universal clean cooking energy access by 2030 and the 2050 net-zero emissions target. Machine learning techniques, such as support vector regression, gradient boosting, and linear regression, alongside an ensemble approach, provide forecasts for these regions. The findings show a varied outlook. Within ASEAN, two countries are expected to reach 100% clean energy access for cooking by 2030, while two are likely to experience a decline. The MENA region shows stronger progress, with eight countries expected to meet the 2030 target. Among BRICS countries, only India is projected to reach full accessibility, while Russia faces a decline. The MINT countries face challenges, with none expected to meet the target, and Nigeria is projected to experience a decrease in clean energy access. The study concludes that the current trajectory makes achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and the 2050 net-zero emissions target unlikely for these regions. Policymakers must reassess their strategies and learn from successful countries to improve outcomes.

Revealing the environmental influences of energy, transport, and pollution taxes on different transportation modes

Artan, Seyfettin; Pata, Ugur Korkut; Hayaloglu, Pinar; Cakir, Mehmet Ali; Recepoglu, Mursit; Cay Cakir, Sumeyra

The need for transportation is increasing with the effect of globalization in the developing economic system. The transportation sector, which is essential for economic development, may pose some threats to a sustainable environment. Although European countries have achieved various successes in reducing carbon emissions, they are struggling to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from transportation. To overcome this difficulty, European countries are using various policy instruments such as environmental taxes. In this context, this study investigated the impact of disaggregated environmental taxes (pollution, energy, and transport), structural change, and institutional quality on transport-related carbon emissions (water, air, and road transport) in 24 European countries over the period 2008-2022. To this end, the study uses the novel half-panel jackknife estimation and the bias-corrected method of moments. The results indicate that there is no long-term relationship between environmental taxes and water transportation-related CO2 emissions. In contrast, structural changes and pollution taxes are effective in reducing road and air transport-related CO2 emissions. These results suggest that European countries should focus on reducing CO2 emissions through effective pollution taxes and encourage carbon taxes instead of energy and transport taxes, thereby supporting the European Green Deal's goal of becoming the first climate-neutral continent.

Relationship between Organic Agriculture And GDP Per Capita, Economic Growth, and Unemployment: Panel Data Analysis

    Merdan, Kurtulus

The increase in the world population recently has also increased the need for agricultural products. The need for food products has made it necessary to obtain more products per unit area. At this point, producers have focussed on the use of hormones, chemicals, and fertilisers to increase productivity and meet the demand for cheap food, and the process that increases production in the short term has become a threat to human health in the long term. Over time, the negative effects of chemicals on humans and the environment were observed, forcing producers to seek new methods. This process has led to independent studies on organic agriculture in every country. In this study, the effects of organic agriculture on some economic variables were revealed. In this context, the analyses focus now the variables of area allocated to organic agriculture on a regional basis, production amount and number of producers affected GDP per capita, economic growth, and unemployment in Turkey between 2003 and 2021. The scientific dimension of the study was prepared using data obtained from domestic and foreign literature and the electronic database of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock. In this study, in which panel data analysis was used, EViews 12 programme was employed. For the variables used in the study, the geographical region cross-section dependence was determined, and the stationarity of the series was examined with the CIPS (Cross-Sectionally Augmented IPS) unit root test. As a result of the study, it was determined that organic production amount, number of organic farmers, and organic production area did not have a significant effect on economic growth and unemployment. Organic production area and the number of organic farmers had a positive and significant effect on GDP per capita, but the amount of organic production did not have a significant relationship

Consequences of Information and Communication Technologies and Environmental Degradation on Health Expenditure

Bayraktar, Yuksel; Aydin, Serdar; Çakir, Mehmet Ali; Recepoglu, Mursit; Ozyilmaz, Ayfer; Buyukakin, Figen; Çakir, Sumeyra

This study aims to examine how the subcomponents and overall measurement of ecological footprint, as well as the use of information and communication technologies, affect health expenditures. For this study, the sample group consisted of the top 25 countries with the highest ecological footprint for the period 2000 to 2021. System GMM estimation results demonstrate that economic growth and ecological footprint have a positive impact on health expenditures. Covid-19 dummy variables, have a statistically significant and positive effect on health expenditures. On the other hand, information and communication technologies has a statistically significant but negative effect on health expenditures. The estimation results show that the Covid-19 pandemic increased health expenditures. Looking at the effect of subcomponents of environmental degradation on health expenditures, all subcomponents have a statistically significant and positive effect on health expenditures. It is seen that the most effective variable is forest products. The variable that has almost the same impact as the footprint of forest products is the carbon footprint. Carbon footprint has significant and positive impact on health expenditures, followed by fishing grounds cropland, grazing land, built-up land. The results of the study indicate which forms of pollution should be given priority by policymakers in order to prevent an increase in health expenditure resulting from environmental degradation.

Does structural change matter for sustainable development in newly industrialized countries? Fresh evidence from a new sustainability indicator

Artan, Seyfettin; Erdogan, Sinan; Recepoglu, Muersit; Çakir, Suemeyra cay; Hayaloglu, Pinar; Çakir, Mehmet Ali

The economic gap between developed and developing economies has been diminishing due to the recent rapid economic growth performance of developing economies. While achieving this swift growth level, developing economies have structurally transformed their economies. However, the impact of this structural change on environmental sustainability remains unclear. Therefore, this study focuses on the impacts of structural change, energy structure, and economic growth on the load capacity factor, a comprehensive sustainability indicator, in newly industrialized countries during 2000-2020. To this end, second-generation panel data techniques, which account for cross-sectional dependence and heterogeneity, are used to provide more robust and reliable estimates. The results show that economic growth, structural change, and fossil energy utilization decrease the load capacity factor while renewable energy utilization increases it. These findings underscore the need for energy efficiency and resource-conscious policies that align with environmental sustainability while promoting economic growth, highlighting their crucial role in the future of sustainable development.

The Effect of Foreign Aid and Governance on Economic Growth; [Dış Yardım ve Yönetişimin Büyüme Üzerindeki Etkileri]

    Hayaloğlu, Pınar; Tümay, Muhammed

Foreign aid is essential in meeting the capital needs of countries that need more resources. However, in the literature, besides the view that foreign aid encourages economic performance, opinions suggest that it has adverse effects on recipient countries. Some ideas argue that the positive impact of foreign aid in recipient countries depends on the institutional quality level of the nations. We examine the relationships between foreign aid, the quality of governance, and economic growth using the dynamic panel data analysis method. The empirical analysis includes samples of 78 low-income countries that used foreign aid from 2000-2019. According to the findings, foreign aid affects economic growth negatively in sample countries. In addition, we find a positive relationship between the quality of governance and economic growth. In line with these findings, we can state that improvements in governance quality will positively impact economic development in the sample nations.

EFFECTS OF CORRUPTION ON ECONOMIC GROWTH UNDER MACROECONOMIC INSTABILITIES

    Batu Agirkaya, Melahat; Akyol, Hikmet

This study examined impact of macroeconomic instability and corruption on economic performance in developing countries. For this purpose, longterm relationship between 1995-2019 was examined using Kao (1999) and Pedroni (1999, 2004) cointegration tests. Results, macroeconomic instability and corruption have affected economic performance in long run. Flexibility of long-term relationship between variables was analyzed using PDOLS, FMOLS and DOLSMG estimators. The results showed that macroeconomic instabilities negatively and significantly affect economic growth and FDI, which represent economic performance. As macroeconomic instability increases, economic revival will be negatively affected by this, while foreign capital investment in country will decrease. Consequently, implementation of policies that will reduce macroeconomic instability and uncertainties will increase economic recovery and encourage foreign capital investments in host countries. Impact of corruption on economic growth and FDI was found to be positive. Decreasing corruption in research countries favors economic growth and facilitates foreign investment increases.

The Determinants of Immigrants’ Skill Composition

Karapınar Kocağ, Esra; Li, Yutong; Popescu, Cristina Raluca Gh.

Movements of labor across the world is an ongoing debate in the literature in terms of its drivers and results in sending and receiving areas. Skill composition of immigrant labor has been discussed by several papers, although they generally focused on visa policies or firm level productivity. However, this paper focuses on the relationship between immigrants’ educational attainment and government budgeting on research and development (R&D). Panel data analysis is applied for European countries, along with instrumental variable approach as a robustness check. Findings reveal that higher budget allocation for R&D is associated with higher skill level of immigrants within overall immigrant population. This finding is driven by young immigrants whose ages are between 25 and 34 and female immigrants in these countries, suggesting that this relationship varies among sub-groups of immigrants, which would have significant policy implications. Hence, the novel and original approach of the paper resides in the deciding factors of immigrants’ skill composition.

Would You like to Work More Hours?—An Investigation on South Africa

Popescu, Cristina Raluca Gh.; Karapınar Kocağ, Esra

To begin with, Sustainable Development Goals are of tremendous importance in all areas, being seen as vital aims in all domains, which makes them indispensable when it comes to addressing the particularities of the labour market these days. Subsequently, human resources occupy a distinctive and unique position when referring to the implications derived from targeting Sustainable Development Goals, especially in the context represented by the period specific to the COVID-19 pandemic and the international events that followed immediately after that. This study investigates the work motivation of individuals, and whether they would be willing to work more hours if they are paid. Motivation and attitudes towards working more hours might be affected by several factors, and they are important contributors to business performance. Not only business performance is to be affected, but this is also a part of Sustainable Development Goals where labour market conditions and productivity concerns are addressed, along with several other factors. Using the Quarterly Labour Force Survey from 2017 to 2022 that is conducted by Statistics South Africa, this study attempts to shed light on individual preferences for working more hours in the case of South Africa. Considering the dichotomous dependent variable, a binary response model is utilised to explore the determinants of such behaviour. Findings of the probit model reveal that socio-demographic factors such as gender, marital status, education level, and work experience are important indicators to explain this preference. More precisely, being female increases the likelihood of willingness to work more hours if paid by 1.1 percentage points, and being never married increases that probability by 2.7 percentage points. Within education categories, the highest coefficient in magnitude, having tertiary education decreases the probability of willingness to work more hours by 8.2 percentage points. As an important labour market indicator, one more year to commence working increases the probability of willingness to work more hours by 0.4 percentage points.
