- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ1Multi-criteria evaluation of medical waste management process under intuitionistic fuzzy environment: A case study on hospitals in Turkey
Çelik, Sefa; Peker, İskender; Gök-Kısa, A. Cansu; Büyüközkan, Gülçin
Waste management has come to the fore in the whole world with the increasing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic along with concerns about human health, environmental threats, and socio-economic factors, etc. Medical waste is one of the waste types that need special management processes including particularly collection, storage, separation, and disposal. Healthcare activities create a great amount of medical waste deriving from the hospitals. This study aims to determine the hospital that carries out medical waste management in the most effective way in Erzurum, Turkey. To handle intense uncertainty in the evaluation process, the case is analyzed by Intuitionistic Fuzzy Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (IFMCDM) methods. The present study contributes to the literature by focusing on a real case problem under IF environment in a Group Decision-Making (GDM) framework. Additionally, based on the literature review and expert judgments, the evaluation criteria relevant to the case are defined in this paper. To this end, a four-phased integrated methodology that involves Intuitionistic Fuzzy Weighted Averaging (IFWA), IF Analytical Hierarchy Process (IFAHP), IF Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (IFTOPSIS) and One-Dimensional Sensitivity Analysis, is conducted. Firstly, IFWA is aimed to express the significance levels of decision makers (DMs) based on their knowledge, qualifications and experiences. Secondly, IFAHP is used to calculate the importance weights of the decision criteria and IFTOPSIS is preferred to rank the available hospitals. Then, sensitivity analysis is employed to display robustness. According to the results, the most important criteria are Qualified personnel, Health institution infrastructure, and Control of waste, respectively and the most efficient hospital is determined.

Qiu, Yan; Ozturk, Samet; Cui, Xinyao; Qin, Wen; Wu, Qingping; Liu, Shuxiang
In this study, we compared the heat tolerance parameter (D65℃) values of Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis PT 30 (S. Enteritidis ) heat adapted at different degrees (at 42 ℃ for 20–180 min) and cultivated using two methods. The treated group with the highest D65℃ value (LP-42 ℃-60 min) and the untreated groups (Control-TSB and Control-TSA) were subjected to transcriptome analysis. Heat-adaptation increased the D65℃ values of S. Enteritidis by 24.5–60.8%. The D65℃ values of the LP-42 ℃-60 min group (1.85 ± 0.13 min, 7.7% higher) was comparable to that of the Control-TSA. A total of 483 up- and 443 downregulated genes of S. enteritidis were identified in the LP-42 ℃-60 min group (log2fold change > 1, adjusted p-value < 0.05). Among these genes, 5 co-expressed and 15 differentially expressed genes in the LP-42 ℃-60 min and Control-TSA grops possibly contributed to the high D65℃ values of S. Enteritidis. The Rpo regulon was involved in the heat adaptation of S. Enteritidis, as evidenced by the significant upregulation of rpoS, rpoN, and rpoE. KEGG enrichment pathways, such as biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, tricarboxylic acid, and ribosomes were identified and mapped to reveal the molecular mechanisms of S. enteritidis during heat adaptation. This study quantified the enhanced heat tolerance of S. Enteritidis heat adapted at different degrees of heat-adaptation. The results of this study may serve as a basis for elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying the enhanced heat tolerance at the transcriptome level.

Aydin, Aydanur; Gürsoy, Ayla; Karal, Hasan
The use of mobile applications is widespread in patient monitoring or education today. This study aims to describe the design and development process of a mobile app that supports patient self-care after breast cancer surgery. We used the ADDIE model to develop and test the mobile app. ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) is a systematic approach based on a standard instructional design model for creating training materials. The model consists of five phases, each with its own set of steps. Once the steps within each phase are completed, the model progresses to the next phase, ultimately resulting in a “usable” product. Different team collaborations were established within each phase, and support was obtained from multiple experts during the design process. Thanks to this model, the information that patients need was transformed into a technological product. This article, which explains the stages of the product design process for mobile applications, provides information that may be helpful to researchers working on similar products.

Mızrak, Sefa; Turan, Melikşah
People may have to leave their home, environment, region and country because of disasters or disaster risks. Effective and efficient disaster risk reduction activities involving the community can reduce disaster risks and enable people to reside more safely and peacefully in their environment. The objective of this study was to investigate whether individual characteristics, risk perception, self-efficacy and perceived social support were correlated with the willingness to relocate due to floods and landslides. The data were collected from 947 people residing in Gümüşhane Province (Türkiye) using a survey. In the study, a total of ten models were tested with the help of ordinal logistic regression analysis. Consequently, the participants' willingness to relocate due to landslides was determined to be higher than the willingness to relocate due to floods. University students and people with chronic diseases and flood and landslide experiences had a greater willingness to relocate. Residence duration and informal social support were negatively correlated with relocation willingness. Those who believed that they could protect themselves in the event of a flood and landslide were more likely to relocate. Among risk perceptions, probability increased relocation willingness mostly due to floods, while fear increased relocation willingness mostly due to landslides. This study attempted to provide policy makers and scientists insight into disaster risk reduction and disaster risk communication related to relocation.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ1New paleomagnetic results from Neogene to Quaternary volcanic rocks of north of the Lake Van, Eastern Turkey
Kayın, Sercan; İşseven, Turgay
The Eastern Anatolia is an active tectonic region where the collision between the Arabian and Eurasian plates take place. Due to the subduction of Arabian plate’s oceanic lithosphere under Eurasian plate, widespread volcanism observed in large areas began in Serravallian. There is no consensus in the literature for the tectonic evolution of the region. Therefore, there are many geological and geophysical studies conducted with the intention of explaining the tectonic evolution of Eastern Anatolia by geodynamic models. Our paleomagnetism study aims to reveal the tectonic rotations in order to better understand the development of the prevailing tectonism in the region from the volcanic rocks. Paleomagnetic samples were collected from 86 sites of the Late Miocene–Pleistocene volcanic rocks located at the north of Lake Van. Isothermal remanent magnetization studies show that magnetite is the mineral responsible for magnetization in most rocks, while both magnetite and hematite are responsible for the rest of the rocks. Curie temperatures and alteration degrees of rock samples were also determined by high-temperature susceptibility (HTS) studies. In some samples, titanomagnetite component was observed in the heating phase of the HTS measurements. The absence of this component in the cooling step indicates that Ti-magnetite is transformed into magnetite by alteration. The Pleistocene volcanics show counterclockwise rotation of R ± ΔR = 13.4° ± 3.8°. The Pliocene volcanic rocks were defined in four different groups: south of Erciş Fault, north of Erciş Fault, around Muradiye and north of Van. Also, the remarkable clockwise rotation is observed in the north of Van and near Muradiye R ± ΔR = 24.4° ± 17.0° and R ± ΔR = 6.9° ± 9.4°, respectively. In addition, counterclockwise rotation (R ± ΔR = 14.5° ± 6.1°) is obtained in the southern part of the Erciş Fault, while there is no significant rotation (R ± ΔR = 0.6° ± 7.4°) on the northern side. Late Miocene volcanic rocks show no significant rotation either (R ± ΔR = 1.8° ± 13.7°). Our new paleomagnetic results indicate that the left-lateral strike-slip Çakırbey Fault, located to the east of the Erciş fault and extending roughly in the northeast–southwest direction, may be active.

Toxoplasmosis is a major health problem and socioeconomic burden, affecting around 30–50% of the global population. Poly(dicarboxylatophenoxy)phosphazene (PCPP) polymer was chosen as adjuvant for the immunogenic peptide antigen. Peptide-loaded PCPP microparticles were synthesized via the coacervation method and the characterization studies of microparticles were conducted to determine their size, charge, morphology, encapsulation efficacy, and loading capacity. To evaluate in vivo efficacy of the vaccine candidate, Balb/c mice were immunized with the formulations. Brain and spleen tissues were isolated from animals to investigate cytokine levels, lymphocyte proliferation, and brain cyst formation. As a result, antibody and cytokine responses in groups immunized with peptide-loaded PCPP microparticles were found to be significantly higher when compared to the control group. In conclusion, our novel multi-epitope peptide-loaded PCPP microparticle-based vaccine formulation demonstrated considerable humoral and cellular immune responses against T. gondii and protected mice against T. gondii infection during Toxoplasmosis.

Yskout, Marie; Vliebergh, Joke; Bor, Hakan; Dupont, Lieven; Lorent, Natalie; Van Bleyenbergh, Pascal; Gillard, Pieter; Van Der Schueren, Bart; Mertens, Ann; Mathieu, Chantal
Introduction. Cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) modulator therapies improve respiratory function and glycaemic control in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). The direct effect of CFTR modulator therapies on pancreatic function in patients without preexisting diabetes remains unclear. Case Presentation. An 18-year-old female with CF caused by F508del/F508del mutation, who had no diabetes, developed postprandial hypoglycaemias 6 months after initiation of elexacaftor, tezacaftor, and ivacaftor combination therapy (ETI). Symptoms were persisted after brief discontinuation of ETI, but her symptoms and time-in-hypoglycaemia had improved remarkably by avoiding high glycaemic index-foods. Discussion. This case of hypoglycaemia associated with CFTR modulator therapy in a patient without preexisting diabetes suggests that CFTR modulator therapy has the potential to directly affect glucose homeostasis. There might be an improvement in insulin secretion as well as a reduction in systemic insulin resistance. Conclusion. Treatment of CF patients without diabetes with CFTR modulator therapies can cause recurrent hypoglycaemic episodes which resolve with dietary measures.

Reis, Hatice Catal; Turk, Veysel; Khoshelham, Kourosh; Kaya, Serhat
The rapid development of machine learning has increased interest in the use of deep learning methods in medical research. Deep learning in the medical field is used in disease detection and classification problems in the clinical decision-making process. Large amounts of labeled datasets are often required to train deep neural networks; however, in the medical field, the lack of a sufficient number of images in datasets and the difficulties encountered during data collection are among the main problems. In this study, we propose MediNet, a new 10-class visual dataset consisting of Rontgen (X-ray), Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Ultrasound, and Histopathological images such as calcaneal normal, calcaneal tumor, colon benign colon adenocarcinoma, brain normal, brain tumor, breast benign, breast malignant, chest normal, chest pneumonia. AlexNet, VGG19-BN, Inception V3, DenseNet 121, ResNet 101, EfficientNet B0, Nested-LSTM + CNN, and proposed RdiNet deep learning algorithms are used in the transfer learning for pre-training and classification application. Transfer learning aims to apply previously learned knowledge in a new task. Seven algorithms were trained with the MediNet dataset, and the models obtained from these algorithms, namely feature vectors, were recorded. Pre-training models were used for classification studies on chest X-ray images, diabetic retinopathy, and Covid-19 datasets with the transfer learning technique. In performance measurement, an accuracy of 94.84% was obtained in the traditional classification study for the InceptionV3 model in the classification study performed on the Chest X-Ray Images dataset, and the accuracy was increased 98.71% after the transfer learning technique was applied. In the Covid-19 dataset, the classification success of the DenseNet121 model before pre-trained was 88%, while the performance after the transfer application with MediNet was 92%. In the Diabetic retinopathy dataset, the classification success of the Nested-LSTM + CNN model before pre-trained was 79.35%, while the classification success was 81.52% after the transfer application with MediNet. The comparison of results obtained from experimental studies observed that the proposed method produced more successful results. Graphical abstract: [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

Altuntaş, Ümit; Güzel, İsmail; Özçelik, Beraat
This study aimed to evaluate the biochemical composition and biological activity of propolis samples from different regions of Türkiye to characterize and classify 24 Anatolian propolis samples according to their geographical origin. Chemometric techniques, namely, principal component analysis (PCA) and a hierarchical clustering algorithm (HCA), were applied for the first time to all data, including antioxidant capacity, individual phenolic constituents, and the antimicrobial activity of propolis to reveal the possible clustering of Anatolian propolis samples according to their geographical origin. As a result, the total phenolic content (TPC) of the propolis samples varied from 16.73 to 125.83 mg gallic acid equivalent per gram (GAE/g) sample, while the number of total flavonoids varied from 57.98 to 327.38 mg quercetin equivalent per gram (QE/g) sample. The identified constituents of propolis were phenolic/aromatic acids (chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, and trans-cinnamic acid), phenolic aldehyde (vanillin), and flavonoids (pinocembrin, kaempferol, pinobanksin, and apigenin). This study has shown that the application of the PCA chemometric method to the biochemical composition and biological activity of propolis allows for the successful clustering of Anatolian propolis samples from different regions of Türkiye, except for samples from the Black Sea region.

Elimination of the matrix effect is a major challenge in developing a method for the quantification of heavy metals (HMs) in water samples. In this regard, the current research describes the simultaneous analyses of Cu(II), Cd(II), and Ni(II) ions in water matrices through flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS) after preconcentration with carrier element-free co-precipitation (CEFC) technique by the help of an organic co-precipitant, 3-{[5-(4-Chlorobenzyl)-3-(4-chlorophenyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl]-methyl}-4-[2,4-(dichlorobenzylidene)amino]-1H-1,2,4- triazole-5(4H)-thione (CCMBATT). Based on our literature research, CCMBATT was employed for the first time in this study as an organic co-precipitant for the preconcentration of HMs. Factors such as solution pH, concentration of co-precipitant, sample volume, standing time, centrifugation rate, and time were thoroughly examined and optimized to achieve the highest efficiency in terms of HM recovery. The limits of detection (LODs) (with 10 number of tests) of 0.54, 0.34, and 1.95 μg L-1 and the relative standard deviations (RSD %) of 2.1, 3.3, and 3.0 were determined for Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions, respectively. Recovery results of HMs for the spiked samples were in the range of 92.8-101.0%, demonstrating the trueness of the method and its applicability to the water samples matrix.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ1Performance analysis of digitally controlled nonlinear systems considering time delay issues
Yanarateş, Cağfer; Okur, Serkan; Altan, Aytaç
In this paper, a comprehensive investigation into discretization, effective sample time selection considering delays in the system, and time and frequency domain analysis of a DC-DC buck converter, which plays a vital role in photovoltaic (PV) systems, is conducted to enhance the understanding of their dynamic behavior, optimize control algorithms, improve system efficiency, and ensure reliable power conversion in photovoltaic applications. To effectively address the non-linear behavior and enhance digital control of a buck converter by selecting the best sample time, several approaches can be employed. These include accurate modeling and identification of non-linear elements, development of advanced control algorithms that account for non-linearities, implementation of adaptive control techniques, and utilization of feedback mechanisms to compensate for deviations from linearity. By considering and mitigating the non-linear behavior, digital control systems can achieve improved accuracy, stability, and transient behavior in regulating the buck converter's output waveforms (voltage or current). The results of the study demonstrated that the trapezoidal integration method which is also known as bilinear approximation, or Tustin's approach outperformed other commonly used discretization methods, such as first-order hold (FOH), zero-order hold (ZOH), impulse response matching (impulse invariant), and matched pole-zero (MPZ) technique, in dual-domain (both time and frequency) analysis. The key finding highlighting the superiority of the bilinear approximation was its ability to achieve the closest match in the frequency domain bridging the continuous-time and discrete systems. This finding emphasizes the significance of the bilinear approach in preserving the frequency characteristics of the original continuous-time system during discretization. By employing this method, the discrete system closely approximated the behavior of its continuous-time counterpart, ensuring accurate frequency-domain representation.

Results: Mobile apps focused on the categories of communication, education, and treatment order/plan. The mean MARS quality score for all apps was 3.4, and according to the mean score of the subscales, they were categorized as functionality, aesthetics, information quality, and participation. In addition, the mean scores of the subscales were listed on MARS as functionality, aesthetics, knowledge quality, and participation. Conclusion: Nowadays, “e-health” apps are attracting attention in the treatment of health problems. While the apps in download stores appear to provide basic information about breast cancer, they offer limited and personalized problem management related to prevention, early detection, and screening. Support from healthcare professionals and further efforts can be made to develop innovative technologies and apps that include evidence-based informational content about breast cancer. Implications for Cancer Survivors: In the process of breast cancer information, survivors can be encouraged to manage this process using e-health services.

Kalaycı, Nagihan; Ürkek, Bayram; Öztürk, Feyza; Şengül, Mustafa; Çiftçi, Esengül
The Çökelek samples what 30 different were collected from randomly local bazaars to investigate heavy metal contaminant and mineral levels and some physicochemical and microbiological properties of samples. While the Pb was identified in 6 of the 30 samples, the As was only found in 4 of the samples. The mean major and trace element contents of Çökelek samples were ordered as Na > P > Ca > K > Mg and Al > Zn > Ni > Cu, respectively. The physicochemical properties indicated a high deviation among samples. The mean total solids, ash, salt, fat, protein waters soluble nitrogen contents, and sample ripening index were 29.83%, 1.88%, 0.68%, 4.31%, 19.84%, 0.33%, and 1.79%, respectively. The mean total aerobic mesophilic bacteria (TAMB) count of Çökelek samples was found as 8.26 log CFU g−1. The coliform bacteria and yeast-mold counts were detected in 11 and 27 of 30 samples, respectively. The mean coliform and yeast-mold counts were 1.82 log CFU g−1 and 7.11 log CFU g−1, respectively. Traditional cheeses are not mentioned in legal laws such as the Turkish Food Codex. So, there is no legal limit and standard production processes. This situation is a problem in terms of traditional cheese quality. For this reason, traditional cheese should perform further studied, and determine the legal limits.

Terminalia citrina (T. citrina) belongs to the Combretaceae family and is included in the class of medicinal plants in tropical countries such as Bangladesh, Myanmar, and India. The antioxidant activities of lyophilized water (WTE) and alcohol extracts (ETE) of T. citrina fruits, their phenolic content by LC-HRMS, and their effects on cholinesterases (ChEs; AChE, acetylcholinesterase, and BChE, butyrylcholinesterase) were investigated. Especially ten different analytical methods were applied to determine the antioxidant capacity. Compared with similar studies for natural products in the literature, it was determined that both WTE and ETE exhibited strong antioxidant capacity. Syringe and ellagic acids were higher than other acids in ETE and WTE. IC50 values for ETE and WTE in DPPH radical and ABTS⋅+ scavenging activities were calculated as 1.69–1.68 μg mL−1 and 6.79–5.78 μg mL−1, respectively. The results of the biological investigations showed that ETE and WTE had an inhibition effect against ChEs, with IC50 values of 94.87 and 130.90 mg mL−1 for AChE and 262.55 and 279.70 mg mL−1 for BChE, respectively. These findings indicate that with the prominence of herbal treatments, T. citrina plant may guide the literature in treating Alzheimer's Disease, preventing oxidative damage, and mitochondrial dysfunction.
