A New Perspective on Technology, Productivity, and Environmental Sustainability in the European Union

    Cakir, Mehmet Ali; Ökte, Mehmet

This study examines the relationship between economic growth, energy consumption, technology, and productivity intensive technology in the context of environmental degradation across selected European Union countries from 1996 to 2021. Utilizing the cross sectionally augmented autoregressive distributed lag model (CS-ARDL) and the load capacity factor as an environmental proxy, the findings confirm environmental kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis indicating that economic growth continues to exert pressure on the environment. While energy consumption significantly contributes to environmental degradation, contrary to popular belief, technological advancements alone do not mitigate this issue. Instead, the study highlights that productivity intensive technologies are more effective in reducing environmental degradation. Policy recommendations emphasize the need for green growth strategies, energy efficiency improvements, sectoral energy quotas, and international cooperation in technology sharing. Special attention should be given to ensuring that technological development increases productivity and reduces environmental degradation. The findings contribute to the literature by highlighting the significance of aligning productivity and technological advancement for sustainable environmental outcomes.

The effect of perceived overqualification on relative deprivation: The moderating role of organisational silence

Polat, Eray; Esen, Ozan; Çalışkan, Serkan

This study aimed to adapt the Mature Happiness Scale-Revised, developed based on the Positive Psychology 2.0 (PP 2.0) theoretical framework, into Turkish. The study tested the linguistic equivalence, structural validity, and internal reliability of the scale. Validity and reliability were analysed using data collected from 303 white-collar employees working in various sectors in Istanbul. For linguistic equivalence, item-level correlations between the English and Turkish forms ranged from moderate to high (0.504–0.768), and the total score correlation was extremely high (r = 0.990). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) supported the single-factor model of the scale with good fit indices (CFI = 0.972; GFI = 0.974; AGFI = 0.944; RMSEA = 0.064). The scale's internal consistency was "good," with a Cronbach's Alpha coefficient of 0.797. Therefore, the Turkish version of the Mature Happiness Scale was determined to be a theoretically and psychometrically valid and reliable measurement tool. This scale can serve as a valuable tool for supporting research in positive psychology and understanding individuals' psychological well-being within the Turkish cultural context.

İdeoloji, halkla ilişkiler, kültürlerarasılık ve toplumsal yapı: türkiye üzerinden birbirine bağlı kavramlara bir bakış

    Kurt, Mustafa Cankut

Exclusion, bureaucracy and racialized migration in abdulrazak gurnah’s by the sea

    Yalcin, Elif Guvendi

Abdulrazak Gurnah's By the Sea (2002) interrogates the paradoxes of hospitality within the asylum process, revealing how conditional welcome operates as a mechanism of control rather than care. Through a critical engagement with Jacques Derrida's hostipitality and Achille Mbembe's necropolitics, this article examines the protagonist's arrival in England and his subsequent placement in a deteriorating Bed and Breakfast as an extension of state governance over displaced subjects. While asylum ostensibly signifies protection, the conditions imposed upon refugees transform hospitality into an instrument of containment, where inclusion is contingent upon submission to bureaucratic and social constraints. Drawing on Derrida's theorization of hospitality as inherently violent, the study demonstrates how the host's power to grant refuge simultaneously reinforces the foreigner's subjugation. Mbembe’s necropolitics further illuminates the ways in which asylum seekers exist within a state of managed decay, where their survival is permitted yet systematically devalued. Gurnah's portrayal of the asylum process thus critiques the host nation’s myth of benevolence, exposing the coercive structures that sustain postcolonial modes of regulation and exclusion. By situating By the Sea within this theoretical framework, the article argues that the novel problematizes the ethical contradictions of asylum policies, revealing how displaced individuals are reduced to spectral presences within the host nation’s borders.

Edge Detection Analysis Using EMAG2 Magnetic Data in Lake Van and Its Surroundings, Türkiye

    Aktaş, Gülten

The aim of this study is to use EMAG2 magnetic data to analyze and interpret the boundaries of important structural features in and around Lake Van using various advanced edge detection techniques. The reduction pole was applied to the magnetic data. Edge detection is an important step to interpret the boundaries of geological structural elements with higher precision. A comprehensive lineament analysis was conducted by applying traditional and advanced edge-detection filtering techniques, including the Tilt angle (TA), the Tilt Angle of the Total Horizontal Gradient Amplitude (TAHG), and Total Horizontal Gradient-Based Edge Detection (THGED). With these methods, the boundaries of magnetic anomaly sources were tried to be interpreted more clearly. In these comparative results, lineations were obtained in the south of the lake and it was shown that it was affected by faults in the N-S, E-W main directions. In the north of the lake, NE-SW trending lineations were obtained.

The Symbolic Child: A Cultural Sociological Analysis of the Changing Role of the Child in the Family

    (Alieva), Vildane Özkan

Drawing on the realization that classical family sociology often treats children as passive dependents—rendering them analytically invisible—this study examines the transformation of the concept of the “symbolic child,” a culturally constructed image of the child’s role and meaning in family life, from agrarian societies to the digital age. This research aims to re-center the symbolic child as a key analytical figure in family sociology and considers how historical and cultural shifts in the symbolic meaning of childhood have redefined the role and meaning of the family institution. The analysis acknowledges that conceptions of childhood are not monolithic; it notes variations by gender, class, and historical-cultural context, bringing an intersectional nuance to the findings. Methodologically, using a qualitative, interpretive, and historical-comparative analysis grounded in cultural sociology, the study traces and compares changes in the symbolic status of children across successive periods. The key findings reveal a profound transformation in the role of children: from economic agencies and labor contributors in agrarian households, children became emotional focal points in industrial-era families, and in today’s media-saturated society they have become precociously adultified participants. Overall, the findings suggest that to understand the family as a cultural institution, the evolving symbolic child must be placed at the center of sociological analysis.

Economic Crises, Social Protection Policies and the Transformation of Family Structures in the European Union: Panel Data Analysis

    Seyhan, Burak

This study investigates the impact of economic crises on the transformation of family structures in European Union (EU) countries through a panel data analysis approach. The divorce rate is used as the dependent variable, while the unemployment rate, real GDP per capita, and social protection expenditures are treated as independent variables. The analysis is based on a balanced panel dataset covering 27 EU member states over the period 1995 to 2022. The study applies several econometric tests including cross-sectional dependence, slope homogeneity, panel unit root, panel cointegration, and long-run estimations (FMOLS, DOLS, OLS). Additionally, panel Granger causality tests are conducted to examine the directionality of relationships between variables. Empirical findings suggest that an increase in unemployment significantly raises divorce rates, while higher social protection spending reduces them. Real GDP per capita is also found to have a statistically significant and positive effect on divorce. The causality results reveal both bidirectional and unidirectional relationships across variables. These outcomes imply that economic instability tends to weaken family cohesion, whereas well-designed social welfare policies act as a stabilizing force. Accordingly, the study emphasizes the critical importance of strengthening social protection systems and adopting employment-centered macroeconomic strategies to ensure the sustainability of family structures within the EU.

Marking Plurality in Turkish and Persian: A Contrastive Morphological Analysis

    Demir, Süleyman

The aim of the study is to compare and contrast the pluralisation suffixes in Turkish and Persian, two geographically and culturally neighbouring languages, in order to analyse both the main morphological differences and parallels between the two languages. To this end, the inventory of plural suffixes in Turkish and Persian are methodically identified and analysed with a special focus on their phonological forms, distributional patterns, and syntactic implications. The study shows that, both languages employ several inflectional suffixes to pluralise nouns but, the type and application of these suffixes are quite different. The analysis is conducted in three stages, namely description, juxtaposition and comparison, which is in accordance with the contrastive grammar methodology. The results of this contrastive study show that, the variety of plural forms in Persian is more than those of in Turkish as Persian has irregular or broken plural forms, and this increases the morphological complexity of the language. In contrast, Turkish pluralisation is highly regular and predictable, sticking closely to morphophonemic standards based on consonantal assimilation and vowel harmony. Another distinguishing trait is that Persian establishes a distinction between animate and inanimate nouns in pluralisation, whereas Turkish does not. It is evident that the pluralisation techniques used in these two languages, which share a large word inventory, are constantly different. Persian-speaking Turkish learners may struggle with these variations, particularly when studying rule-based affixation or dealing with irregularity. Based on these findings, the study makes practical recommendations for instructors, second language learners, curriculum planners, translators, and textbook authors working in bilingual or comparative environments

Transhumanism or Transgression: Altered Bodies in Perdido Street Station

    Çapoğlu, Kemal

Being an important example of the New Weird genre, China Miéville’s Perdido Street Station (2000), criticizes transhumanist discourse and presents the ethical issues and unfortunate results of technology in New Crobuzon. This study argues that Miéville questions the optimistic point of view of transhumanism that technology improves human life. The novel also showcases how technology can be used to oppress people by creating inequality, torturing bodies and creating disorder among public. The discussion begins with the remade who are beings forcefully transformed into horrible beings in which flesh and machinery coexist. The modifications of the remade challenges the idea of voluntary enhancement because they function as tools of punishment or exploitation that removes autonomy and honour, thus transforming their bodies so that they can be labourers, entertainers and weapons. The discussion then explores the character Yagharek, the Garuda trying to regain his ability to fly after losing his wings because of a crime. Although Yagharek’s pursuit is compatible with transhumanist notion of morphological freedom, his dependence on New Crobuzon power relations and the ethical ambiguity of his pursuit poses contradiction. Additionally, Isaac’s unintentional release of consciousness-consuming slake-moths when carrying out flight experiments creates concerns about the uncontrolled use of technology. Ultimately, by inserting the remades’ oppression into the Yagharek’s journey, Perdido Street Station interrogates the optimistic claims of transhumanism. Miéville produces a framework of exploitation and ethical ambiguity which prioritizes the fact who controls the technology and who utilizes or suffers from it. This analysis not only not only discusses the novel’s criticism but also reflects the real-world debates on technological advancements, requiring further assessment of humanity’s future

Living like a tree: narratives of slow violence in arundhati roy's the ministry of utmost happiness

    Yalcin, Elif Guvendi

This article bridges postcolonial studies and ecocriticism to explore the entanglement of environmental degradation and systemic marginalization in Arundhati Roy's The Ministry of Utmost Happiness. Mainly anchored in the theoretical framework of Nixon's concept of "slow violence," this study examines how colonial and neo-colonial ideologies perpetuate ecological exploitation and social inequality. Through characters such as Anjum and Gulabiya, Roy critiques the intersection of environmental injustices, displacement, and socio-political exclusion. Anjum's existence within a graveyard, which is a symbolic site of ecological decay, exemplifies the gradual violence inflicted upon marginalized communities, while the extinction of white-backed vultures symbolizes the ecological ramifications of industrial modernity. Additionally, the Narmada Bachao Andolan and the Bhopal disaster serve as critical case studies of environmental racism, highlighting the disproportionate burdens borne by the Global South in the name of development. By engaging with colonial legacies such as deforestation and industrial expansion, the article underscores how contemporary globalization replicates the exploitative dynamics of imperialism. Roy's narrative strategies amplify the silenced experiences of the dispossessed while critiquing the ethical failures of anthropocentrism and capitalist modernity. The article concludes by emphasizing the role of literature as an activist medium, capable of rendering visible the imperceptible impacts of ecological and social violence. In doing so, it advocates for postcolonial ecocriticism as an essential lens for addressing global environmental and cultural issues.

Optimizing Reflow Soldering Oven Temperature Control: A Mathematical Approach with First-Order Modelling and PI Controller Design

    Altan, Aytaç; Yanarates, Cagfer

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the identification and control of a reflow soldering oven, with the primary goal of developing a Proportional-Integral (PI) controller to ensure precise temperature regulation and high-quality solder joints in circuit board manufacturing. The study begins by examining the generic thermal profile of a reflow soldering oven, offering insights into its temperature dynamics and control requirements. A mathematical model of the oven is derived using a first-order transfer function with transport delay, based on system response analysis. This model serves as the basis for designing and tuning the PI controller. The design process involves a systematic approach, including model validation and performance analysis under various operating conditions. The optimization of temperature control focuses on minimizing overshoot, compensating for steady-state errors, and ensuring robust responses to disturbances. Comprehensive simulations are conducted to evaluate the system's performance and stability, taking into account potential disturbances, noise, and time delays. The effectiveness of the developed PI controller is validated through comparisons with a simple Proportional (P) controller, and its accuracy is verified using the pole placement method. The results demonstrate significant improvements in temperature control, highlighting the controller's ability to precisely maintain desired thermal profiles.

Investigation of Radiation Shielding Performance in Borosilicate Ceramic Glass Samples

    Kaya, Selim

Ceramic glass is a multipurpose solid-state material that merges the high thermal stability, mechanical strength, and chemical durability of ceramics with the transparency, light transmission, and aesthetic benefits of glass. Because of these qualities, ceramic glass can be used in both industrial and scientific settings, especially when radiation protection, high-temperature endurance, heat resistance to thermal fluctuations, and optical clarity are required. Radiation shielding properties of five distinct ceramic glass samples with the chemical formula B2O3-ZnO-K2CO3-PbO (abbreviated as BZKP) were comprehensively assessed in this study. The radiation protection parameters of B2O3-ZnO-K2CO3-PbO glass-ceramic systems, including gamma-ray kerma coefficients (kγ), half-value layer (HVL), radiation shielding efficiency (RPE), mean free path (MFP), fast neutron macroscopic cross section ΣR (cm−1), and effective atomic number (Zeff), were theoretically examined using Monte Carlo EGS4 and WinXCOM software. The radiation shielding characteristics at 20 discrete photon energies, ranging from 0.05 MeV to 2 MeV, were theoretically calculated using the EGS4 simulation code and subsequently compared with data obtained from the XCOM program. The results of this study provide solid and valuable information regarding the improved design of high-performance ceramic glasses for radiation shielding applications. To create effective shielding solutions, a comprehensive understanding of the interactions between various materials and ionizing radiation, such as neutrons and gamma rays, is essential. By combining these discoveries, scientists can create new shielding materials that make the most of materials in these critical areas while improving radiation protection.

An Assessment of Tracking Lost Livestock According to Sumerian Cuneiform Texts

    Aktürk, Mehmet Yunus

This article examines how cases of lost livestock were recorded, investigated, and compen-sated within the bureaucratic apparatus of Sumer by analysing cuneiform archives from the Ur III period (2112–2004 BCE). It focuses on three interrelated document types: ration lists, which first register the loss; investigation dockets, which detail the cause, the responsi-ble parties, and witness statements; and compensation tablets, which formalise restitution either by an animal in kind or by its barley equivalent. Terms such as “gu₄ gaz” and “udu sikil” simultaneously denote the quantitative deficit and its juridical status, thereby ensuring institutional consistency. The study shows that oaths, sureties, and a double entry technique reinforced administrative transparency, while compensation calculations were shaped by social status. In theft (gazi) cases, indemnities could rise to 150 percent of the ordinary value, highlighting the system’s deterrent function. Ultimately, incidents of lost livestock served a critical role not only in stock control but also in maintaining social hier-archy and bureaucratic legitimacy within the Sumerian economy. These findings demon-strate that Sumerian administrative practice developed a sophisticated system that inte-grated quantitative oversight with legal financial enforcement inside a unified documen-tary chain.

Factors Affecting Consumers’ Intention to Purchase Domestic and Electric Automobiles (TOGG): A Research in the Eastern Black Sea Region

Avcı, İbrahim; Yildiz, Salih; Koroglu, Ali

Many countries in the world produce their domestic cars and take part in the automotive market. Turkey was also included in these countries, with the TOGG electric car brand introduced in 2019. The TOGG electric car brand, was mass-produced and sold in 2022, has begun to be purchased and used by consumers. Therefore, the factors that affect consumers' purchasing intentions for TOGG brand domestic and electric cars are a matter of curiosity. Therefore, the research aims to determine the effects of consumer innovativeness, consumer ethnocentrism, performance expectation, social impact, environmental benefit and price insensitivity on the purchase intention of TOGG brand domestic and electric cars, and also to reveal the moderating role of the subsidies offered for purchase in these effects. The survey form prepared for this purpose was applied face to face to consumers in seven Eastern Black Sea Region provinces. As a result of the analysis, while positive effects of consumer innovativeness, consumer ethnocentrism, performance expectation, social impact and environmental benefit on the intention to purchase the TOGG brand automobile were determined, no significant effect was determined regarding price insensitivity. These findings have substantial implications for both theory and practice.

Air pollution and premature deaths: A panel analysis of PM2.5 effects in Europe

    Tümay, Muhammed

This research investigates air pollution's health and economic implications, focusing on the effect of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on premature death in the European Union (EU)-27 countries from 2007 to 2019. It employs a robust fixed-effect (FE) panel regression to analyze the data. The study considers various economic and demographic factors, including healthcare expenditure as a percentage of GDP, income distribution, healthy life expectancy at age 65, fertility rates, and total deaths. The analysis reveals that a 1% increase in PM2.5 causes a significant 1.9% rise in premature deaths. These findings urge policymakers to limit air pollution and its destructive impact on public health. The results highlight the need to integrate environmental health interventions into economic policies to protect and improve population well-being. It also adds to the existing economic literature on environmental degradation and its impact on health.
