A hierarchical metaheuristic framework for CPT-based soil liquefaction prediction with Kolmogorov–Arnold Network variants

Günen, Mehmet Akif; Öztürk, Kaşif Furkan

Soil liquefaction is a critical geotechnical hazard that threatens the safety of civil infrastructure under seismic loading, necessitating robust and interpretable prediction models. This study proposes a hierarchical framework for CPT-based soil liquefaction prediction using meta-heuristic-optimized Kolmogorov–Arnold Network (KAN) variants. The framework follows a two-stage optimization strategy. First, six state-of-the-art meta-heuristic algorithms are statistically compared to identify the most effective optimization method. Second, the selected algorithm is employed to optimize six KAN variants, including FastKAN, EfficientKAN, FourierKAN, ChebyKAN, JacobiRKAN, and PadéRKAN. Statistical comparisons based on the Wilcoxon signed-rank test demonstrate that the Colony-Based Search algorithm (CSA) achieves lower objective-function values than the competing meta-heuristics (p<0.01) and is therefore adopted as the core optimization strategy. Performance evaluation reveals that the CSA-optimized ChebyKAN model achieves the highest predictive accuracy, with an F1 Score of 0.8875 ± 0.011 and an AUC of 0.9115 ± 0.013. Pairwise McNemar tests detected no statistically significant difference in classification decisions for any evaluated model pair (p>0.01). SHapley Additive exPlanations analysis identified qc, qc1N, and amax as the variables with the largest model-specific attributions, whereas d, c, and σv received lower attributions. A cost-sensitive error analysis further showed that ChebyKAN produced the lowest false-negative rate and the lowest asymmetric error cost under 5:1 and 10:1 false-negative-to-false-positive cost scenarios, supporting its conservative behaviour for safety-critical liquefaction screening. The results establish the proposed CSA–KAN framework as a reliable, high-accuracy, and interpretable solution for CPT-based soil liquefaction assessment in geotechnical engineering practice.

Analytical UWB waveform design based on linear combination of Gaussian-modulated sinusoids

    Oğuz, Yasin; Kaya, Haydar

This study proposes an analytical ultra wide-band (UWB) waveform design based on linear combination of Gaussian-modulated sine waves to prevent interference with existing narrowband systems, in accordance with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) UWB spectral mask. The proposed model determines the common pulse duration and the center frequencies of the components in closed-form using the relationships among the number of components, the overlap of components and the design band frequency limits. As a result, UWB waveforms for different design scenarios can be generated without computationally intensive algorithms. The method was evaluated in terms of spectrum utilization efficiency (SUE) within the 3.1-10.6 GHz indoor FCC UWB band. Results show that same SUE can be achieved with fewer components by appropriate overlap level. Comparisons with existing studies demonstrate that the proposed approach provides high performance for similar component numbers while avoiding complex optimization-based models with high computational cost. Moreover, the normalized spectral form and SUE are preserved for different sub-band widths when the analytical parameters are updated according to the new frequency limits. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is an effective waveform design approach due to its low computational complexity, high SUE, and scalability to multi-subband full-band UWB designs.

Serial mediating role of belonging and state mindfulness in the relationship between clinical learning environment and caring behaviors in nursing students

Özalp, Cemal; Tuncer, Metin; Kaya, Abdulsamed; Şahin, Fatih

Aim: The study aimed to examine the relationship between clinical learning environment and caring behaviors in nursing students and to test the serial mediating roles of belonging and state mindfulness in this relationship. Background: The psychosocial mechanisms linking the clinical learning environment to caring behaviors remain unclear, particularly the combined roles of belonging and state mindfulness. Design: The study had a cross-sectional design and was conducted in line with the STROBE guidelines. Methods: The sample consisted of 452 undergraduate nursing students studying at a state university in Turkiye. The data were collected between December 2025 and January 2026 using the Personal Information Form, Clinical Learning Environment Scale, Nursing Department Belonging Scale, State Mindfulness Scale, and Caring Behaviors Inventory. Results: The clinical learning environment was found to be positively correlated with sense of belonging (B = 0.412, p < .001). Sense of belonging significantly predicted both State Mindfulness (B = 0.607, p < .001) and caring behaviors (B = 0.857, p < .001). State mindfulness is also a significant predictor of caring behaviors (B = 0.734, p < .001). Indirect effects analyses indicated that the clinical learning environment was associated with caring behaviors through sense of belonging and through the sequential pathway involving both sense of belonging and state mindfulness. However, the direct effect of the clinical learning environment on caring behaviors was not significant. Additionally, the indirect effect of the clinical learning environment on caring behaviors through state mindfulness alone was not significant. Conclusions: The results of the study showed that the clinical learning environment is associated with nursing students' caring behaviors indirectly through sense of belonging and state mindfulness, rather than directly.

Efficacy of blue light-assisted ClO2 for Salmonella decontamination on basil leaves: inactivation kinetics, quality preservation, and microbiota dynamics

Lian, Yi; Liu, Songlin; Ozturk, Samet; Wei, Xinyao

Frequent Salmonella outbreaks associated with basil leaves highlight the need for effective postharvest decontamination. Conventional microbial sanitizers often fail to inactivate pathogens while preserving product quality, creating a demand for novel decontamination technologies suitable for basil. In this study, the microbial safety of basil under typical consumption scenarios was evaluated and a blue light-assisted ClO2 (COM) decontamination process for basil leaves was developed. Mathematical models were used to describe the microbial inactivation kinetics, and a systematic comparison was conducted against traditional single-chemical sanitizers (H2O2, HClO, ClO2, and 75% ethanol) in terms of microbial safety and final product quality. Results showed that simulated cooking scenarios, including pizza baking and hot soup immersion, were insufficient to reduce the Salmonella levels below the detection limit (<10 CFU/g) under a high initial load of 9.7 log CFU/g. Compared to the single-chemical treatments, 100 mg/L COM treatment achieved significantly higher decontamination (p < 0.05) by reducing Salmonella and background microbiota by 4.8 and 3.5 log CFU/g, respectively, with treatment time of 15 min. The inactivation kinetics of Salmonella showed a non-linear inactivation kinetics, which was captured by the Weibull model with a low RMSE value (RMSE = 0.16), although the AICc value (11.37) indicated limited model parsimony. Furthermore, the COM treatment significantly reduced bacterial richness (with the Chao1 index decreasing from 316 to 71) and effectively inactivated key spoilage organisms (Pseudomonas) as well as members of the Enterobacteriaceae, Actinomycetota, and Bacillota groups. Compared with the 100 mg/L ClO2 treatment alone (1.40 mg/kg), the 100 mg/L COM treatment resulted in a ClO2 residue concentration below the detection limit, without significantly altering visual appearance, color, chlorophyll content, total phenolics, or polyphenol oxidase activity (p > 0.05). Overall, blue light-assisted ClO2 treatment effectively reduced microbial contamination and reduced ClO2 residues while preserving the physical quality of basil, representing a promising decontamination approach for the fresh produce industry.

In this study, a series of new benzohydrazide derivatives (1a-i) were synthesized, and characterized as potential cholinesterase inhibitors for use in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The inhibitory activities of the synthesized compounds against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) enzymes were evaluated using in vitro and in silico methods. IC50 values for AChE inhibition ranged from 29.50 to 46.21 nM, with compound 1c exhibiting the highest inhibitory potential at an IC50 of 29.50 nM. For the BChE enzyme, the strongest effect was observed with compound 1d at an IC50 of 55 nM. The synthesized derivatives exhibited higher inhibitory potential compared to the reference tacrine (IC50: 58.73 nM for AChE and 187.30 nM for BChE) against cholinesterase enzymes through both competitive and non-competitive inhibition mechanisms. Molecular docking (ΔG: -10.67 to -9.95 kcal/mol for AChE; -9.80 to -8.69 kcal/mol for BChE) and 100 ns molecular dynamics simulations supported the binding affinities and indicated the dynamic stability of the enzyme-inhibitor complexes, in agreement with the experimental inhibition data. In silico ADMET profiling indicated favourable drug-likeness and high predicted gastrointestinal absorption and blood-brain barrier permeability (TPSA 41.46-61.69 A2), and structural alert screening returned no PAINS matches. The findings suggest that these derivatives may serve as promising lead compounds for further investigation as potential cholinesterase inhibitors relevant to AD, pending experimental cytotoxicity evaluation.

Authorisation of notary publics on real property transactions in relation to the Turkish land registry system based on Cadastre 2014 vision

Çoruhlu, Yakup Emre; Inan, Halil Ibrahim; Çelik, Mehmet Ozgur; Alemdar, Alkan; Yildiz, Okan; Azadi, Hossein

The International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) has globally influenced land administration through its Cadastre 2014 vision and subsequent LADM standards. T & uuml;rkiye has been modernizing its land registry and cadastre system accordingly. The General Directorate of Land Registry and Cadastre (GDLRC) manages approximately 17 million annual transactions, including about 3.4 million conveyancing (long-term averages). To reduce congestion in Land Registry Offices (LROs), notaries were authorized to issue sales contracts in June 2022. This study investigates the effects of this change within the Cadastre 2014/2034 framework in terms of the maturity of the Turkish Land Administration System (LAS) and also by linking the issue to broader debates within land management and governance. A survey of 140 GDLRC experts revealed that notary involvement currently offers limited time and financial benefits to citizens and does not significantly reduce LRO workload. The central factor for this limitation is evaluated to be the maturity of Turkish LAS. On the other hand, the initiative aligns with Cadastre 2014's fifth statement, which advocates public-private collaboration, and therefore it should be further evolved. Within this evolution, administrative/managerial fixes and training programmes for notaries in the short term, management of all internal and external RRRs via LAS as a spatial data infrastructure service in line with LADM standards in the medium term, and betterment of institutional coordination, public responsibility development and capacity building in the long term are proposed for a better eventual land administration and management towards local and national good land governance.

Navigating Ethnic Issues on Clubhouse: Digital Experiences of Autochthon Turks in Iran

    Dinç, Artum

This research investigates how issues related to ethnic politics in Iran are articulated by Turkish civil activists on the digital platform Clubhouse. It specifically examines: (1) The thematic categories under which these issues are raised; (2) The discursive dynamics shaping their discussion; (2) The organization and moderation of the chatrooms; and (4) The profiles of the participants. Employing a cultural sociology approach, the study analyzes how Clubhouse chat rooms –characterized by real-time verbal interaction– operate as emerging virtual public spaces for articulating ethnic grievances. It further explores whether these spaces facilitate the sharing of collective memory, the production of counter-hegemonic identity discourses, and the enactment of digital solidarity practices. The research ultimately aims to offer a descriptive analysis of the thematic content, discursive dynamics, organizational modalities, and participant profiles within this context of digital activism. A qualitative research method was employed in this study. Data were collected through participant observation by directly engaging in relevant Clubhouse chat rooms between 28 March and 1 May 2025. The data were subsequently categorized using conversation analysis. In accordance with the study’s objectives and research questions, the findings were organized and interpreted under four thematic headings: (1) Topics raised; (2) Discursive dynamics; (3) Organization and moderation of the chatrooms; and (4) Participant profiles. In the conclusion, the findings were evaluated through the conceptual lens of network power, networking power, networked power, and network-making power, as developed by Manuel Castells in his Network Theory of Power. The analysis also considered whether interactions on Clubhouse contribute to addressing issues stemming from ethnic politics in Iran. Furthermore, recommendations were proposed to enhance the effectiveness, inclusivity, sustainability, and solution-oriented nature of these virtual engagements. Overall, the study offers an original sociological framework for understanding the ethno-cultural activism of autochthon Turks in Iran within the virtual public space.

Comparison of Online and Hybrid Education Models for First Aid and Emergency Care Students

Karabela, Semsi Nur; Kahraman, Beliz Yekeler; Değirmenci Bingöl, Nurhan; Döğer, Berna Nur Berker

Background: The Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic disrupted education and training processes, necessitating a transition to remote learning that significantly altered teaching methods for both students and instructors. To highlight the challenges arising from this rapid shift in applied health sciences, the present study aimed to compare the perceptions of professional competence among First and Emergency Aid students who received online versus hybrid education during the pandemic. Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among second-year students at two universities: one providing fully online education (n = 59) and the other offering hybrid instruction (n = 61). Results: No statistically significant difference was observed between the groups in understanding theoretical courses (p = 0.088); however, students who received face-to-face instruction within the hybrid model demonstrated significantly better comprehension of practical courses (p < 0.001). Conclusion: In conclusion, while online education is adequate for acquiring theoretical knowledge, it is insufficient for developing clinical and technical skills. Accordingly, these findings suggest that practical courses in health education programs, such as First and Emergency Aid, should be conducted face-to-face whenever possible; when in-person attendance is required, appropriate safety measures should be implemented.

The mediating role of general attitude towards artificial intelligence in the relationship between thriving at work and psychological well-being

    Bekar, Fevziye

This research examines the mediating role of general attitudes towards artificial intelligence in the effect of employees' levels of thriving at work (a personal resource) on their psychological well-being, within the framework of the Job Demands and Resources (JDR) theory. The limited number of studies in the literature that integrate attitudes towards self-development, work psychology, and artificial intelligence based on the Job Demands and Resources theory constitute the basis for this research. A quantitative research approach was adopted in the study; data obtained from 399 healthcare workers using a convenience sampling method and a two-stage data collection process were analysed using the PROCESS Macro (Model 4). The findings show that employees' levels of thriving at work increase their attitudes towards artificial intelligence and that these attitudes positively influence their psychological well-being. Consequently, this research adds a technology-based perspective to the Job Demands and Resources theory and offers important insights for organisations to develop employee-focused technology integration and human resources strategies.

Enhanced control of a two-wheeled gyroscopic combat robot with variable CMG disk speeds using LQR-Based neural network

Oğuz, Yasin; Ünker, Faruk; Cetin, Gokhan

This study proposes a hybrid control approach to improve the stability and adaptability of a two-wheeled gyroscopic combat robot by integrating deep learning with Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) control. Due to their inherently unstable nature, two-wheeled robots face challenges maintaining balance, especially when Control Moment Gyroscope (CMG) disk speeds vary, which significantly affect system dynamics. While LQR provides effective stabilization by minimizing a cost function, its performance degrades when disk speeds change. To overcome this limitation, a Neural Network (NN) was trained on 42001 precomputed LQR gain sets optimized for CMG disk speeds ranging from 800 to 5000 rad/s. The trained NN predicts appropriate coefficients in real time, enabling adaptive control under dynamic operating conditions. Simulation results demonstrate that the hybrid NN-LQR controller maintains stability under recoil forces up to 3000 N, where the conventional LQR loses balance about 4–6 seconds. Furthermore, the proposed controller reduces energy consumption by 21.6% during steady-state operation within the first 5 seconds and 10.6% under recoil conditions within the first 3 seconds compared to classical LQR. Although developed for a combat robot, the proposed framework offers a scalable solution for broader robotic applications such as search and rescue, surveillance, and autonomous navigation in complex environments, contributing to the advancement of intelligent control in robotics.

Development of Chitosan-Stabilized Pickering Emulsions Loaded with Supercritical Fluid Extraction of Honey Bee Pollen for Functional Food Applications

Ayna, Adnan; Mesci, Esra; Arserim-Uçar, Dılhun Keriman

Honey bee pollen (HBP) is a nutritionally rich natural product containing phenolics and antioxidants; however, its rigid outer wall limits the bioavailability of these bioactive compounds. Therefore advanced extraction and delivery systems are required to enhance stability and functional performance for food applications. This study aimed to encapsulate a supercritical fluid extract (SFE) of honey bee pollen within chitosan-stabilized Pickering emulsions in order to improve encapsulation efficiency and antioxidant activity. Honey bee pollen obtained from Bingöl, Türkiye, was extracted with supercritical CO₂. Pickering emulsions were prepared via ultrasound-assisted emulsification in the presence of chitosan as a stabilizer, with SFE-HBP at 5%, 10%, and 15% (w/v). The prepared emulsions were characterized for their microstructure, particle size, zeta potential, and encapsulation efficiency. Total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activities were assessed using the Folin–Ciocalteu and CUPRAC assays, respectively. All formulations yielded stable, uniformly distributed Pickering emulsions with spherical droplets and no visible phase separation. Indeed, encapsulation efficiency increased with increasing SFE-HBP concentration, from 73.96% to 87.06%. The particle size ranges (7.22–12.44 µm) and zeta potential values (+21.73 to +28.24 mV) indicate good colloidal stability. For both TPC and CUPRAC antioxidant activities, a concentration-dependent increase was observed, with the highest values in the 15% SFE-HBP-containing emulsions. Collectively, these findings indicate that a chitosan-based Pickering emulsion is an effective delivery system for SFE-derived bioactive compounds from honey bee pollen. The method provides enhanced encapsulation efficiency, antioxidant capacity, and physicochemical stability, hence exhibiting great potential for functional food and nutraceutical applications.

The relationship between individual learning preferences and academic achievement: A VARK model perspective among physical education and sports teaching students

Bayrakdaroğlu, Yeşim; Türker, Üstün; Ateş, Zeynep Hazal; Demir, Salih

Understanding the relationship between learning styles and academic achievement among students in Physical Education and Sports Teaching programs is crucial for designing more effective and student-centered instructional approaches. Accordingly, the primary aim of this study was to examine pre-service teachers’ individual learning styles and their relationship with academic performance. The study sample consisted of 548 undergraduate students from different year levels. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form and the VARK Learning Style Inventory (Version 7.0). The collected data were coded and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics (Version 27.0). Descriptive statistics were used to determine participants’ demographic characteristics, dominant learning modalities, and learning model types. To examine the relationship between dominant learning styles and academic achievement, chi-square and Linear-by-Linear Association tests were employed. The findings revealed that students predominantly preferred kinesthetic and read/write-oriented learning styles, and a considerable proportion exhibited multimodal learning preferences. Although no direct significant relationship was found between dominant learning styles and academic achievement, the influence of learning models on performance was observed particularly among students with moderate academic achievement levels. In conclusion, while learning styles do not solely determine academic success among pre-service teachers in sports sciences, they appear to be an influential factor in shaping the quality and flexibility of the learning process. Therefore, it is recommended that teaching practices incorporate applied and multidimensional approaches that take students’ individual learning preferences into account.
