The Mediating Role of Attitudes Towards Psychology of Religion Course in the Relationship Between Theology Students’ Levels of Religious Attitude and Finding Meaning in Life

    Birinci, Ali; Maraşlıoğlu, Şerife Ericek

The notion of meaning in life can be defined as the subjective experience that life is valuable and worth living. Research has demonstrated that individuals who possess a strong sense of purpose tend to demonstrate positive coping mechanisms and maintain optimal mental well-being when confronted with adversity. In essence, the presence of meaning in life has been shown to enhance an individual’s resilience, thereby mitigating the risk of developing mental health conditions such as pessimism, anxiety, stress, and depression. Religious attitude, on the other hand, shapes an individual’s inner and outer life by directing his/her religious feelings, thoughts and behaviors. As a matter of fact, religious attitude plays a strong role in finding resources to solve life problems, finding explanations for stressful life events such as disappointments and frustrations by affecting the individual’s level of making sense of life. In a similar manner, the objective of the psychology of religion course is to facilitate comprehension and elucidation of the human condition, encompassing the intricacies of individuals’ emotions, cognitions, and behaviours, as well as their interactions with their immediate environment, broader culture, and their spiritual practices. The attainment of this objective is contingent upon the motivations, motives and attitudes of students towards the course. A positive attitude towards the course has been shown to have a significant impact on students’ sense of purpose and their religious attitudes. In this context, it is important to investigate the interactional relationship between the levels of making sense of life and religious attitudes of theology faculty students and their attitudes towards the psychology of religion course. The present study aims to determine whether the psychology of religion course exerts a mediating effect on the relationship between the level of religious attitude exhibited by theology faculty students and their ability to find meaning in life. The study group of the research consists of a total of 320 students, 218 female and 102 male, studying at Gümüşhane University Faculty of Theology in the 2023-2024 academic year. The study data were collected using a Personal Information Form, an Attitude Scale towards the Psychology of Religion Course, a Religious Attitude Scale, and Meaning and Purpose of Life Scales. The data were analysed with IBM SPSS Statistics 26 and Amos 24 software packages. The findings indicated a positive relationship between students’ religious attitude levels and their levels of finding meaning in life. It can thus be posited that individuals who exhibit pronounced religious attitudes are concomitantly characterised by a propensity to engage in the making of sense of life. The findings further revealed significant positive relationships and interactions between the religious attitudes of theology faculty students and their attitudes towards the psychology of religion course. It is thought that the psychology of religion course can contribute to the individual’s efforts to make sense of life by explaining religious feelings, thoughts and behaviours in terms of content and achievement. The study revealed a positive correlation between an individual’s attitude towards the psychology of religion course and the level of meaning in their life. Furthermore, it was observed that the attitude towards the psychology of religion course played a mediating role in the relationship between religious attitude and the level of meaning in life. Consequently, all hypotheses determined within the scope of the research were confirmed. The results of the study indicate that attitudes towards the psychology of religion course are significant for undergraduate students’ religious attitudes and their sense of life’s meaning. In light of these findings, it is recommended that instructors oversee students’ attitudes towards the course during the teaching process, enhance course materials and content, and incorporate diversity in terms of methodology.

The Role of Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) in Obstetric Malpractice: An Evaluation from the Perspectives of Midwives, Nurses and Forensic Medicine

    Doğan, Muzaffer Berna; Karakas, Sevda

This review aims to assess the significance of electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) in medical error claims in obstetrics from the perspectives of midwifery, nursing, and forensic medicine. One fundamental approach to preventing adverse events during labor is the early recognition of fetal distress. Midwives and nurses are responsible for applying, evaluating, and recording EFM tracings during labor, which are crucial evidence in forensic medical evaluations. In the absence of medical records, the follow-up, treatment, and medical practices become contentious during trials, leading to delays in the litigation process. This is because medical records are vital in evaluating medical malpractice claims, and expert witnesses play a key role in assessing the standard of care. Despite its widespread use, there is a need for greater clarity on the reliability, role, and benefits of EFM. Furthermore, expert witnesses in medical malpractice cases may interpret practices with controversial reliability differently. While the reliability of EFM is debated, it cannot be ignored that it is an essential tool for early recognition of fetal distress. Given its importance and the need for written evidence in the trial process, it is recommended that forensic nurses, midwives, and lawyers receive training on maintaining medical records according to standards.

Mapping the Individual: A Psychogeographical Reading of Iris Murdoch’s Under the Net

    Uruk, Ahmet

Introduced firstly by Guy Debord, the founder of the Letterist International, in 1955, psychogeography intersects with the study of the psychological and emotional effects of an urban city on individuals. Proposing that both space and psychology complete one another, psychogeography, as a term juxtaposing psychology and geography, seeks to unearth the estrangement and the dehumanizing impacts of global urbanism consolidated by advanced capitalism and industrialization. In this sense, psychogeography focuses mostly on the act of walking so as to comprehend the ongoing conflict between the mind and city and suggests walking as a conscious activity can function as a protest and subversion against the commodification and repressive constraints of the city. Likewise, Iris Murdoch's debut novel titled Under the Net captures the story of Jake Donaghue and his unstable psychology alienated and decentred by the formation of an urban city, that is, London. Thus, this study aims to analyze Iris Murdoch's Under the Net in order to emphasize the fragmentation and displacement of individuals in accordance with the global urbanism by employing a psychogeographical lens.

Investigation of mechanical properties of nano-graphene reinforced polymer composites

Karabudak, Filiz; Ateş, Onur Kazım; Zamanlou, Hamid

The demand for lightweight and durable materials in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and chemical engineering has driven research into advanced composite materials. This study investigates the interaction between nano-graphene and polymer matrices, focusing on how varying concentrations of nano-graphene can optimize mechanical properties and potentially revolutionize the design of structural components. Polymer composite materials were produced using glass fiber fabric and an epoxy resin system employing the hand lay-up method. Nano-graphene was incorporated into the matrix at weight percentages of 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, and 1%.Notably, the addition of 1% nano-graphene resulted in a significant tensile strength increase, achieving a maximum value of 186.73 MPa, compared to the control group at 53.71 MPa. This enhancement is attributed to the improved stress transfer mechanisms facilitated by the nano-graphene’s high surface area and exceptional mechanical properties. However, an unexpected decrease in bending strength was observed, with the glass fiber control group composites exhibiting the highest bending strength of 404.75 MPa. This trend suggests that while nano-graphene enhances tensile properties, it may introduce interfacial weaknesses or disrupt fiber alignment in bending scenarios. These findings reveal the complex nature of nano-graphene reinforcement, emphasizing the need for tailored formulations to balance tensile and bending performance. Further investigation into the interfacial bonding and distribution of nano-graphene within the polymer matrix is warranted to develop optimized composite materials for structural applications.

Baltaci, Cemalettin; Akmeşe, Osman; Aygül, İmdat; Kılınç, Kagan; Hafedh, Mohammed

The efficient extraction of bioactive molecules from medicinal plants is strongly related to the solvents and methods used. This study evaluated the impact of solvent selection and extraction methods on the bioactive potential of Rosa canina seed extracts, focusing on antioxidant, antimicrobial, and α-amylase inhibitory activities. Four solvents —dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), ethanol-water (80:20), ethyl acetate, and acetonitrile— were paired with maceration and ultrasonic techniques to generate eight extracts (DMM, DMU, ESM, ESU, EAM, EAU, ACM, ACS). Antioxidant activity was assessed via total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid (TFC) content, FRAP, DPPH, and ABTS assays. Antimicrobial efficacy was tested against seven microorganisms (Gram+, Gram−, and yeast) using well diffusion and MIC methods, while α-amylase inhibition was quantified via IC50. The ethyl acetate ultrasonic extract (EAU) exhibited the highest TPC (63.86 mg GAE/g) and TFC (210.23 mg QE/g), along with superior antioxidant activity across all assays (P < 0.05). Ethyl acetate maceration (EAM) ranked second, underscoring ethyl acetate’s efficacy. Acetonitrile maceration (ACM) demonstrated the strongest α-amylase inhibition (IC50 = 20.46 mg/mL). All extracts showed notable antimicrobial activity against Aeromonas hydrophila and Klebsiella pneumoniae, though efficacy varied for other strains. DMSO-based extracts (DMM/DMU) consistently underperformed. These findings highlight ethyl acetate (EAU/EAM) as optimal for antioxidant-rich extracts and ACM for enzyme inhibition, positioning Rosa canina seeds as a promising source of natural bioactive compounds for functional food and therapeutic applications.

The effects of behavioral biases on investment decisions: Evidence from İstanbul stock exchange

    Özbek, Adem

Every investment decision at the macro or micro scale carries with it the desire to profit. At this point, profit assumes the driving role and continuity of capital. Information assumes a crucial role in the realization of this role. The field of behavioral finance, which opens a different window to the finance literature, argues that investors do not act completely rationally in financial decisions. Behavioral finance argues that there are subconscious factors that affect information. This study aims to detect the factors of behavioral bias factors influencing the investment decisions of individuals trading in Istanbul stock exchange (BIST). The importance of this study stems from the scarcity of local studies focusing on behavioral finance within the scope of stock market investment. Accordingly, it is expected that the study will enrich this awareness in the field. Therefore, the effects of nonrational cognitive elements such as loss aversion, expectation, certainty, herding effect, intuitive factors, and anchoring on individuals' investment decisions were investigated in the study. As a result, the findings obtained from the research provide useful information to investors trading in BIST to adopt scientific foundations within the scope of behavioral finance in stock investments.

The study included a total of 315 athletes, 148 women and 167 men, selected using a random sampling method. In the study, the Sport Mental Toughness Questionnaire and Self-Compassion Scale-Athlete Version were used as data collection instruments. As statistical analyses, t-tests were used for pairwise comparisons, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for multiple comparisons, the Tukey test for intergroup pairwise comparisons in the ANOVA test context, and Pearson correlation analysis was used for examination of the relationship between two scale scores. Upon examining the study results, statistically significant differences were found for the total mental toughness scores of participants based on gender, type of sport, level of sport, and years of participation in sports (p<0.05). However, no significant differences were found in mental toughness scores based on age (p>0.05). Additionally, no statistically significant differences were observed in selfcompassion scores based on gender, age, type of sport, level of sport, or years of participation in sports (p>0.05). Finally, a positive and moderate significant relationship was found between the total scores for the Sport Mental Toughness Questionnaire and the Self-Compassion Scale-Athlete Version (p<0.01). Based on these results, it is expected that an increase or decrease in self-compassion levels in athletes will be associated with an increase or KEYWORDS decrease in their mental toughness levels. Consequently, it is recommended that athletes engage in cognitive training in addition to physical training. This is anticipated to enhance both their mental toughness and selfcompassion levels.
