Assessment of Türkiye’s renewable energy, economic growth, and emissions (2000-2021): A decision-making approach with MAXC and MUTRISS models

    Macit, Nazife Sahin

This study investigates Türkiye’s performance in renewable energy utilization, economic growth, and carbon emissions between 2000 and 2021 through the application of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods. By employing MAXC and MUTRISS as decision-making models, this study facilitates the integrated assessment of economic development and environmental sustainability objectives. The MAXC-based analysis identifies economic growth (GDP) as the most influential criterion aligned with national development objectives, while environmental sustainability emerges as a secondary yet essential component. Renewable energy consumption is underscored as a fundamental element of sustainable development. The MUTRISS findings indicate that Türkiye exhibited its highest overall performance in 2004, whereas 2007 and 2008 were marked by the lowest performance levels, potentially reflecting the adverse effects of economic downturns and environmental pressures. To validate the robustness of the applied methods, comparative analyses were conducted with other MCDM techniques. Spearman rank correlation results reveal strong concordance between MAXC and objective weighting methods such as Entropy, MPSI, and IDOCRIW, while showing a negative correlation with CILOS. Conversely, MUTRISS demonstrated moderate positive correlations with PIV, SAW, and CoCoSo, indicating relatively lower ranking consistency. The findings contribute to the methodological evaluation of MCDM tools and emphasize the importance of integrated economic–environmental policy approaches in sustainability assessments.

Limitations of conversion factor approaches in the synthesis of complex oxide superconductors: a case study on Y123 and Y358

    Aktaş, İbrahim

Accurate precursor calculation is essential for the successful synthesis of oxide-based superconductors. This study compares two commonly used methods stoichiometric balance and conversion factor (CF) approaches in the synthesis of YBa2Cu3O7-δ (Y123) and Y3Ba5Cu8O18+δ (Y358) superconductors. The analysis reveals that CF methods introduce substantial systematic errors, particularly for Y2O3, with deviations reaching 21.2% in Y123. These errors are exacerbated in Y358 due to its increased stoichiometric complexity. Unlike stoichiometric methods, CF approaches neglect volatile losses such as CO2 and fail to adjust for oxygen non-stoichiometry (δ variations), leading to misestimations in precursor masses. Statistical tests (χ2 < 0.001, RMSE) and experimental data confirm that these inaccuracies can negatively impact phase purity and crystallographic quality. A strong correlation (R2 = 0.847) between stoichiometric accuracy and phase formation quality emphasizes the importance of rigorous calculation. This study highlights the inherent limitations of CF-based shortcuts and underscores the necessity of comprehensive stoichiometric modeling, especially in complex oxide systems. The findings also provide an educational framework to address common misconceptions in materials synthesis, particularly for early-stage researchers in solid-state chemistry and materials science.

Challenging Neo-Orientalism: Muslim Identity and the Israel-Palestine Conflict in Teju Cole's Open City

    Yalcin, Elif Guvendi

This article explores Teju Cole's Open City (2011) as a profound critique of neo-Orientalist discourses in the post-9/11 era, focusing on Farouq, an Arab-Muslim intellectual in Brussels. Grounded in Edward Said's Orientalism and Hamid Dabashi's neo-Orientalism, the analysis reveals how Farouq resists Western pressures to assimilate or enact commodified versions of his identity, challenging the persistent demand for "oriental fantasy" narratives. The novel situates Farouq's personal struggles within geopolitical tensions, notably the Israel-Palestine conflict, which characters frame as a defining contemporary issue. This perspective counters neo-Orientalist assertions that attribute Middle Eastern instability to inherent cultural flaws, instead critiquing Western imperialism and media distortions. The study contrasts Farouq's revolutionary consciousness with Dr. Maillotte's liberal dismissal of his grievances, exposing subtle neo-Orientalist mechanisms that mask structural inequities under a veneer of openness. Through its dialogic structure and reflective narrator, Julius, Open City fosters authentic intercultural exchange, disrupting monolithic portrayals of Muslim identities. The article argues that Cole's narrative not only contests reductive stereotypes but also positions literature as a vital medium for advocating equitable identity representations in a globalized world. By centering Farouq's intellectual agency and experiences, the study contributes significantly to understanding identity politics and representation in postcolonial literature, underscoring the enduring relevance of Said's critique in contemporary global discourses.

Advanced adaptive control strategies application for speed regulation of a 12V small dc geared motor

    Cetin, Gokhan

This paper investigates the implementation and performance of adaptive control techniques for a 12V small geared DC motor characterized by modeling errors and input disturbances. This paper discusses the following two primary approaches: Adaptive Radial Basis Function Neural Network (ARBFNN) Controllers and Model Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC). In model uncertainty, MRAC and ARBFNN outperformed the simple Proportional-Integral (PI) controller. The study is further expanded to involve Robust MRAC and Adaptive Sliding Mode Radial Basis Function Neural Network (ASRBFNN) Controllers to counter the compounded effects of model uncertainty and input disturbances. The versions of the robust controllers performed better than the conventional PI controller in cases involving both uncertainties and disturbances. Implementations were done on a 12V geared DC motor testbed with an Arduino microcontroller and MATLAB's System Identification Toolbox. The results from simulations and experimental applications highlight the greater flexibility and disturbance rejection capability of the developed advanced adaptive control schemes, making them perform better than standard PI controllers under challenging conditions.

The Interactive Roles of Frustrations and Religious Attitudes on Aggression

    Maraşlıoğlu, Şerife Ericek

Recent data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) reveal a worrisome escalation in aggression rates among young individuals, including incidents of injury, criminal involvement, and criminal activity. In this context, the basic objective of the present study is to examine the moderating effect of religious attitudes on the relationship between frustration and aggressive behavior. The study data were collected through an online cross-sectional survey conducted with 729 participants (523 female, 206 male) randomly selected between the ages of 18 and 25. To collect the data, the Aggression Scale, the Religious Attitude Scale, and the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale were used. The results showed that frustration was positively related to physical aggression, hostility, anger, and verbal aggression. In contrast, religious attitudes were negatively related to physical aggression, hostility, anger, verbal aggression, and frustration. Additionally, religious attitudes played a moderating role in the relationship between frustration and physical aggression and hostility. However, the findings indicated that religious attitude failed to reduce the effect of frustration on anger and verbal aggression. The results of the study indicate that religious attitudes significantly influence the impact of frustrations on tendencies toward anger and verbal aggression. These findings reveal a complex relationship between frustration and aggression, which depends on the degree of religious inclination. In light of these findings, it is recommended that guidance programs based on religious values be developed—within the framework of the existing literature—to help reduce aggression levels among individuals experiencing need frustration.
