A quantitative analysis on the effect of crystal parameters on full energy peak efficiency of a coaxial high purity Germanium detector for the energy range 50 keV-2.5 MeV

    Çelik, Necati

High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors are essential instruments in gamma-ray spectrometry, offering high sensitivity and exceptional energy resolution. The full-energy-peak (FEP) efficiency is a critical parameter that influences the accuracy of activity concentration measurements of radionuclides. This study examines the FEP efficiency of a coaxial HPGe detector, focusing on variations in crystal length, crystal radius, and crystal hole dimensions. For varying crystal lengths, the efficiency values show negligible differences at low energy (50 keV) but significant increases at higher energies, indicating that longer crystal lengths enhance efficiency. Similarly, the efficiency increases with larger crystal radii across all energy levels suggesting substantial efficiency gains even at low energies. However, variations in crystal hole radius and depth, exhibit minimal impact on FEP efficiency across all tested energy levels. These findings highlight that optimizing crystal length and radius is more crucial for changing detector efficiency compared to modifying hole dimensions, providing valuable insights for optimizing Monte Carlo models and detector design.

Through the eyes of healthcare professionals: Compassion fatigue and earthquake stress coping strategies of healthcare professionals in the disaster region following the Kahramanmaras centered earthquakes: A case-control study

Emirza, Elif Güzide; Uzun, Sevda; Şenses, Medine

Background: Healthcare professionals serving in the earthquake zone may experience mental problems due to the traumatic events they witnessed. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of working in earthquake-affected areas on compassion fatigue and coping strategies for earthquake stress in healthcare professionals compared to a control group. Methods: This descriptive and correlational study was conducted in three provinces in the northern region of Türkiye. The sample of the study consisted of 146 healthcare professionals working in earthquake-affected regions and 143 healthcare professionals not working in earthquake-affected regions. Data were collected using the ‘Descriptive Information Form’, ‘Compassion Fatigue Short Scale (CF-SS)’, and ‘Coping with Earthquake Stress Scale (CESS)’. Descriptive statistics, t-test for independent samples, Pearson correlation analysis and binary logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Results: Statistically significant differences were found between healthcare professionals working in earthquake-affected regions and healthcare professionals not working in these regions in terms of CF-SS total scores, ‘occupational burnout’ sub-dimension mean scores and ‘seeking social support’ mean scores among CESS sub-dimension mean scores (p <.05). However, no statistically significant difference was found between the mean scores of ‘secondary trauma’ sub-dimension of CF-SS and total-CESS, ‘religious coping’, and ‘positive reappraisal’ (p >.05). A high and positive correlation (r =.805; r =.847; r =.847; r =.695, p <.001) was found between total CF-SS scores and total religious coping, positive reappraisal and seeking social support scores of the participants. In addition, working in the earthquake zone negatively affects positive reappraisal and positively affects seeking social support as a significant predictor (β =.081, OR = 0.922, p <.05; β =.111, OR = 1.117, p <.05). Conclusion: A significant positive relationship was observed between compassion fatigue and coping with earthquake stress. At the same time, it was determined that having worked in the regions affected by earthquakes had a strong positive effect on coping strategies with earthquake stress.

Investigation of new mixtures based on natural rubber and nitrile-butadiene rubber for high damping base isolation systems

Çavdar, Özlem; Yıldız, Zeynep; Naghshineh, Ali Karimzadeh

High damping rubber isolators (HDRBs), which are popular in base isolation systems, extend the natural vibration periods of structures and increase the energy dissipation capacity of the systems. Thus, they can protect structures from damage that may occur in earthquakes. The difference between HDRBs and other elastomer bearings is the chemical formulation of the rubber used. The aim of this study is to prepare a new rubber mixture that is resistant to seismic loads and has good damping properties for HDRBs. In this direction, rubber mixtures were prepared with three different formulations. The mixture of ingredients used in this study is Natural Rubber (NR), Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR), Carbon Black (CB), process oil, Zinc Oxide (ZnO), Stearic Acid (StA), coumaron resin, protective agent, sulfur and accelerators. Quadruple shear block specimens were produced with elastomers produced with mixtures. Dynamic tests were performed on these samples. Elastomer earthquake isolation bearings with a damping ratio of 6% or greater are classified as ‘highly damped’. In this study, values greater than 10% were obtained for damping ratio values at 100% shear stresses. Experimental and numerical analyses revealed that the damping values of the compounds developed with NBR-based formulations are at an acceptable level for highly damped isolators. In general, it was observed that the damping properties increased from 6% to 12%. Therefore, it is thought that the developed HDRB compounds can be used as elastomers in the construction of seismic isolators with high damping properties.

Intersession Robust Hybrid Brain–Computer Interface: Safe and User-Friendly Approach with LED Activation Mechanism

Aydın, Sefa; Melek, Mesut; Gökrem, Levent

This study introduces a hybrid Brain–Computer (BCI) system with a robust and secure activation mechanism between sessions, aiming to minimize the negative effects of visual stimulus-based BCI systems on user eye health. The system is based on the integration of Electroencephalography (EEG) signals and Electrooculography (EOG) artefacts, and includes an LED stimulus operating at a frequency of 7 Hz for safe activation and objects moving in different directions. While the LED functions as an activation switch that reduces visual fatigue caused by traditional visual stimuli, moving objects provide command generation depending on the user’s intention. In order to evaluate the stability of the system against physiological and psychological conditions, data were collected from 15 participants in two different sessions. The Correlation Alignment (CORAL) method was applied to the data to reduce the variance between sessions and to increase stability. A Bootstrap Aggregating algorithm was used in the classification processes, and with the CORAL method, the system accuracy rate was increased from 81.54% to 94.29%. Compared to similar BCI approaches, the proposed system offers a safe activation mechanism that effectively adapts to users’ changing cognitive states throughout the day by reducing visual fatigue, despite using a low number of EEG channels, and demonstrates its practicality and effectiveness by performing on par or superior to other systems in terms of high accuracy and robust stability.

Solving the Dynamic Stability Challenge of Automatic Gain-Controlled Phase-Locked Loops: A Robust Alternative via Enhanced SRF-PLL Design and Implementation

    Yanarateş, Cağfer; Altan, Aytaç

This study presents a robust alternative to conventional phase-locked loop (PLL) architectures through the design and real-time implementation of an enhanced Synchronous Reference Frame Phase-Locked Loop (SRF-PLL) for single-phase inverter systems. Targeting the inherent dynamic stability limitations of Automatic Gain-Controlled PLLs (AGC-PLLs), the proposed SRF-PLL demonstrates superior performance in transient response and tracking accuracy. Comparative evaluations under diverse dynamic operating conditions—including phase angle jumps, voltage sags/swells, frequency steps, noise, and harmonic distortion—highlight its resilience and adaptability. Experimental results reveal a substantial improvement in dynamic response, achieving 2.5 to 6 times faster settling times depending on the operating condition. Moreover, peak-to-peak oscillations were significantly suppressed, with deviations reduced from 2° to nearly 0° under a 5 Hz frequency step scenario, even in the presence of 3rd order harmonic injection. For a 40° phase angle step, the proposed system achieves a fivefold improvement in attenuation time (0.03 s vs. 0.11 s) compared to the AGC-PLL. Under voltage sag conditions with noise and 3rd order harmonic injection, the enhanced SRF-PLL reduces the attenuation time from 0.2 s to 0.08 s. During voltage swell scenarios, it further improves the response time from 0.025 s to 0.01 s. These findings confirm the practical benefits and efficiency of the enhanced SRF-PLL for applications requiring precise and reliable phase tracking and synchronization.

Incorporation of ultrasound-assisted treatment in cheese to accelerate ripening of Kaşar cheese: Changes in cheese microbiota, proteolysis, enzyme activities and volatile profiles

Yılmaz, Fırat; Dağdemir, Elif; Hayaloğlu, Ali Adnan

This study aimed to assess the impact of using LAB strains (Lactobacillus helveticus DPC 4571 and Lactobacillus casei ATCC 334) directly or after sonication on the quality and ripening of Kaşar cheese. Experimental cheeses were produced with a combination of cheese starters (Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus), adjuncts and sonicated cultures. The cheeses showed remarkable variations in titratable acidity and pH. The bacterial counts showed that sonication was effective on adjunct cultures, causing faster and stronger autolysis of L. helveticus DPC 4571 and an increase in L. casei ATCC 334 during ripening. Cheeses containing adjunct cultures exhibited higher proteolysis, with increased hydrolysis of αs1- and β-caseins. Aminopeptidases activities increased during ripening by adjuncts and sonicated-adjunct cultures. The use of adjunct culture resulted in a greater increase in the free amino acid content. Adjuncts and sonicated-adjunct cultures increased both the quantity and diversity of some volatiles. In conclusion, the inclusion of sonicated culture in the starter system offered a potential approach to accelerate cheese ripening and improve cheese quality.

Spatial and temporal analysis of seismicity and seismotectonic parameters in Albania region

Ormeni, Rrapo; Öztürk, Serkan; Silo, Erald; Bozo, Rrezart; Hoxha, Ismail; Mucaj, Dionald

A comprehensive analysis of b-value for the Albanian earthquakes was conducted using the instrumental earthquake catalogue of Albanian region. A total of 38,816 seismic events with magnitudes ML> 0.1 on the Richter scale were utilized. Statistical characteristics of the seismicity were examined based on b-value, as defined by the Gutenberg-Richter law. Considering the magnitude completeness (Mc-value) as 2.7, b-value was estimated as 1.09 ± 0.08 and it indicates a normal stress regime in the region. The Mc-value varies from 1.5 to 3.4, and spatial distribution of b-value ranges from 0.79 to 1.16. Higher b-values (> 1.0) were detected in the southernmost part of Albania, whereas lower b-values (< 1.0) were found in the western part, particularly within the Adriatic-Ionian fault zone and the Lushnje-Elbasan-Dibër transversal fault zone, as well as in the south-eastern Leskovik-Erseka-Korça fault zone. Regions with lower b-values correspond to areas with larger-magnitude events, while higher b-values are associated with smaller earthquakes. These findings suggest that b-values across Albania generally round 1.0, with lower values indicating moderate stress accumulation in the western region and within two other active seismic belts. The b-values less than 1.0 may signal areas of increased seismic potential. The occurrence probability of earthquakes across varying magnitudes was found to be very high (99%-100%) for seismic events with ML between 0.5 and 4.5, and lower (less than 95%) for events with ML > 5.5; it varied from 1% to 60% for events with larger ML > 6.0 for different Tr values. Recurrence periods for smaller magnitudes are relatively short (less than 1 year for magnitudes from 1.0 to 4.2), whereas for larger magnitudes (5.0 to 6.0), recurrence periods are longer, about 100 years. The Albanian region is characterized by a complex geological setting and significant seismic activity, and, thus, it can be stated that these types of analyses may be important in terms of seismotectonic evaluation and seismic hazard.

Enhancing part-based gait recognition via ensemble learning and feature fusion

    Yaprak, Büşranur; Gedikli, Eyüp

Gait, a behavior-based biometric feature, has gained increasing popularity in human identification, particularly in surveillance systems, due to its ability to function without physical contact or explicit consent. Traditional silhouette-based methods have demonstrated that different body parts exhibit distinct movement patterns during walking, thereby enhancing recognition accuracy. In this study, we propose an improved part-based gait recognition approach by leveraging ensemble learning on local body regions. The Gait Energy Image (GEI) is segmented into five horizontal parts, and ensemble learning is applied to the convolutional neural network (CNN) responsible for their processing. A separate MetaModel is trained for each body part to integrate the part-based features obtained from ensemble learning and synthesize the most discriminative ones. Additionally, a part-removal process is introduced to mitigate the effects of appearance-based variations by analyzing absolute differences between images with and without variations. The aggregated most distinctive features contribute to robust recognition. We evaluate our proposed approach on the CASIA-B, CASIA-C, and Outdoor-Gait datasets, and experimental results indicate that ensemble learning significantly enhances part-based gait recognition performance under various appearance variations, outperforming several state-of-the-art methods. The datasets and source code are available at https://github.com/busrakckugurlu/Enhancing-Part-based-Gait-Recognition-via-Ensemble-Learning-and-Feature-Fusion/tree/main.

THE MODERATING ROLE OF PRICE SENSITIVITY AND THE MEDIATING ROLE OF SWITCHING COSTS IN THE MOBILE OPERATOR SWITCHING BEHAVIOR OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN TURKEY; [MODERATORSKA ULOGA CJENOVNE OSJETLJIVOSTI I MEDIJACIJSKA ULOGA TROŠKOVA PROMJENE U PONAŠANJU PROMJENE MOBILNOG OPERATORA KOD STUDENATA SVEUČILIŠTA U TURSKOJ]

    Avci, Ibrahim

Purpose – The aim of this research study is to assess the effects of service quality and satisfaction on intentions of university students to switch operators, as well as the moderating function of price sensitivity in these effects. Furthermore, the influence of switching costs as a mediator between operator switching intention and operator switching behavior is investigated. Design/methodology/approach – A quantitative research involving students from a Turkish university was conducted. The research hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling (partial least squares regression) using data from 425 students. Findings and implications – The analysis revealed that service quality had a positive influence and satisfaction had a negative effect on operator switching intention, with price sensitivity acting as a moderator in the relationship between satisfaction and switching intention. It was also determined that operator switching cost plays a partial mediator role in the link between operator switching intention and behavior. Research findings will help organizations understand the elements that affect switching intentions and behavior. It is proposed that operator businesses pay attention to customer satisfaction and implement retention and acquisition tactics. Limitations – The research was limited to operator switching. Furthermore, the findings are specific to the survey participants and cannot be generalized. Originality/value – The fact that the moderating role of price sensitivity and the mediating role of switching cost are investigated in this research highlights its significance, while the findings in this context make significant contributions to the field by filling a gap in the literature.

EXCITED ELECTRON PRODUCTION AT THE SPPC-BASED ep COLLIDERS VIA CONTACT INTERACTIONS

    Caliskan, A.

If a linear electron accelerator is installed into the SPPC (Super Proton–Proton Collider) complex, ep collision options will be available in addition to pp collisions. We consider the production of excited electrons with spin-1/2 at the future SPPC-based electron–proton colliders with center-of-mass energies of 8.44, 11.66, 26.68, and 36.88 TeV. In the ep → e*X → eγX signal process, excited electrons are produced by contact interactions and decay into the photon channel by gauge interactions. Taking into account the corresponding background process, the pseudorapidity and transverse momentum distributions of the final-state particles are plotted. We reported on the discovery, observation, and exclusion mass limits of excited electrons by applying appropriate kinematical cuts best suited for amplifying the signal of the excited electron signature. We also investigated the highest achievable values of the compositeness scale for the discovery of excited electrons at these colliders.

Çelikel, Baha Engin; Yılmaz, Coşkun; Demir, Alper; Sezer, Süreyya Yonca; Ceylan, Levent; Ceylan, Tülay; Tan, Çetin

Background: The effect of inspiratory muscle training on upper limbs One Rep Maximum (1RM) in professional natural bodybuilders is still unclear. Our aim of this study is to investigate the effects of a 6 weeks inspiratory muscle training on 1RM results. Methods: This study included 14 athletes, that had participated in international bodybuilding competitions. Each athlete had been training for minimum of 5 years and at least 5 h per week. The participants were randomly divided into two groups: inspiratory muscle training (IMT) and control (CON) groups. The IMT group and CON group consisted of seven subjects. While the control group continued with the normal training regime, the IMT group additionally performed inspiratory muscle training with the resistance setting of the PowerBreathe® Classic device set to 40% of the participant’s MIP. Prior to and during the 6-week training period, the bench press 1 RM, anthropometry, pulmonary function tests, and maximal inspiratory (MIP) and expiratory (MEP) pressure measurements were obtained. A nutrition protocol developed by a qualified dietician was implemented for each athlete. Results: The mean maximal strength of the respiratory muscle training group changed by 14.39%, whereas that of the control group changed by 9.43% (p = 0.012). The changes in the mean FVC (p = 0.000), FEV1 (p = 0.001), PEF (p = 0.064), MIP (p = 0.001), and maximal expiratory pressure (p = 0.017) were greater in the IMT group. The mean circumferences of the shoulder (p = 0.004), chest (p = 0.008), arm (p = 0.004), and neck (p = 0.003) improved more in the IMT group than in the CON group. A reduction in abdominal measurement was observed in the IMT group (p = 0.039), whereas no notable discrepancy was identified in body fat percentage (p = 0.295). Conclusion: In conclusion we identified that the addition of progressive loading inspiratory muscle training for competition preparation programs in professional natural bodybuilders will further improve their respiratory function, respiratory muscle strength, maximal strength, and muscle development. This research provides valuable insights into how IMT influences bodybuilding training outcomes, potentially guiding future interventions and program designs to better support strength development and body composition in bodybuilding training contexts.

Effect of heating rate on thermal inactivation kinetics of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in ground beef

Ozturk, Samet; Huang, Lihan; Hwang, Cheng-An; Sheen, Shiowshuh

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of heating rate on thermal inactivation kinetics of microorganisms in food, testing the survival of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in ground beef during isothermal and dynamic heating. A 4-strain cocktail of E. coli O157:H7 was inoculated to irradiation-sterilized ground beef (10 % fat) and then subjected to isothermal heating (55–63 °C) and dynamic heating (20–63 °C). One-step analysis was used to determine the kinetic parameters. Different degrees of increased thermal resistance were observed in E. coli O157:H7 during dynamic heating. In comparison to isothermal heating, slight increase in the thermal resistance was found during fast heating (1.2–1.8 °C/min). However, slow heating (0.3–0.9 °C/min) led to significantly increased thermal resistance due to heat adaption at temperatures below 61.3 °C, but E. coli O157:H7 became more sensitive to heat above this temperature, suggesting that the increased resistance may diminish after reaching a critical temperature. To account for the increased heat resistance during dynamic heating, a unified kinetic model was developed and validated by applying one-step dynamic analysis, resulting in more accurate kinetic parameters to describe the survival curves of all heating rates. This study demonstrated that the kinetic parameters derived from isothermal conditions may not be applicable to dynamic conditions. It is necessary to consider the effect of heating rate and to determine the thermal inactivation kinetic parameters under dynamic conditions. It also demonstrated the advantage of using one-step dynamic analysis for evaluating thermal processes. The results of this study may be particularly useful for designing slow-heating processes to ensure proper cooking of products.

Optimization of steel diffusion bonding processes using the Taguchi method

Serkan Yıldırım, Mehmet; Aydın, Kemal; Kalyon, Ali; Kaya, Yakup

This study examines the diffusion bonding behavior between 316L stainless steel and H13 tool steel, focusing on the effects of key process parameters. Specifically, the influence of bonding pressure, bonding temperature, and holding time on joint quality and mechanical performance is systematically investigated. The Taguchi optimization method was employed to determine the optimal bonding conditions, with shear strength serving as the primary performance indicator. The bonding interfaces were characterized through scanning electron microscopy to analyze microstructural evolution and diffusion behavior. Analysis of variance was conducted to assess the influence of process parameters on shear strength, identifying temperature as the most significant factor. The optimum shear strength was experimentally validated, and a confidence interval was calculated to ensure statistical reliability. The results demonstrated that higher bonding temperatures and moderate pressures led to improved diffusion at the interface, enhancing joint integrity. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the diffusion bonding process and its potential for high-performance applications in aerospace, biomedical, and tooling industries.

Post-seismic structural assessment: advanced crack detection through complex feature extraction using pre-trained deep learning and machine learning integration

Reis, Hatice Catal; Turk, Veysel; Ustuner, Mustafa; Kaya Yildiz, Cagla Melisa; Tatli, Ramazan

Earthquakes can often cause significant damage to buildings. After an earthquake, experts/managers need to make quick and accurate damage assessments. Traditionally, manual analysis processes have been widely used in damage assessment studies. The fact that these methods are time-consuming and based on human observation leads to certain limitations in damage assessment studies. In recent years, artificial intelligence techniques such as deep learning and machine learning have frequently been preferred in damage detection studies, and significant success has been achieved. This study aimed to automatically detect cracks/damages in the buildings in Diyarbakir city after the February 6, 2023 Kahramanmaras, Turkey earthquake. Our experimental dataset was collected by the researchers and named Kahramanmaras-Diyarbakir Earthquake Building Crack Dataset (KDBECD-2023). The data set consists of four categories in terms of damage level: undamaged, slightly damaged, moderately damaged, and heavily damaged buildings. DenseNet201 deep learning architecture and popular machine learning algorithms, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, Decision Tree, and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) were used to classify cracks at different damage levels. In the experimental phase, feature extraction was performed with the DenseNet201 architecture. In addition, dimensional reduction was applied with the Principal Component Analysis method to reduce the computational complexity of the proposed hybrid study. According to the experimental results, the DenseNet201-KNN hybrid model gave the most successful result with an accuracy value of 94.62%. The results of this study can make important contributions to decision makers and experts in detecting cracks and damages in buildings after an earthquake.

Investigation of the effects of mainshock-aftershock sequences on the dynamic responses of pipeline considering soil-pipeline interaction

    Ozturk, Kasif Furkan

Pipelines are important structural elements that are frequently used today to meet many infrastructures needs such as drainage, natural gas or water transmission. In this context, the usability of such structures, which are important elements of infrastructure systems, especially after disasters such as earthquakes, is of great importance. For this reason, within the scope of this study, a parametric investigation of the seismic behaviors of a natural gas pipeline system under mainshock-aftershock sequences have been carried out, specifically taking into account the soil-natural gas pipeline interaction (SNGPI) in the help of finite element model (FEM) proposed. Before developing the model of SNGPI system proposed using solid element, the fundamental mode frequencies of the pipeline system modeled using the solid element for the verification have been compared with those of obtained from the pipeline system modeled using the beam element and the analytical solutions. After verification of proposed model is demonstrated, SNGPI system has been modeled and its fundamental modes have been compared with mode frequencies of soil stratum obtained from well-known simple analytic solutions. After this stage, the dynamic analyses of natural gas pipeline (NGP) system in the time domain have been carried out using four different soil systems and four different mainshock-aftershock sequences. The results of the nonlinear time-history analyses have been investigated in terms of the stress and the displacement responses. Parametric evaluations show that the greatest displacements and the stresses occurring at the considered nodes of NGP system may be importantly affected from mainshock-aftershock sequences and soil stiffness changes. As the soil stiffness decreases, both the peak stresses and displacements increased significantly. On the other hand, the same responses obtained under mainshock loadings, which have relatively lower peak ground acceleration (PGA)/peak ground velocity (PGV) ratio compared to aftershock loadings, are generally larger than those obtained under aftershock loadings.

In the earthquakes that occurred in the Pazarcık (Mw = 7.7) and Elbistan (Mw = 7.6) districts of Kahramanmaraş Province on 6 February 2023, many buildings collapsed in the Hayrullah neighborhood of the Onikişubat district. In this study, we investigated whether there was a soil amplification effect on the damage occurring in the Hayrullah neighborhood of the Onikişubat district of Kahramanmaraş Province. Firstly, borehole, SPT, MASW (multi-channel surface wave analysis), microtremor, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), and vertical electrical sounding (VES) tests were carried out in the field to determine the engineering properties and behavior of soil. Laboratory tests were also conducted using samples obtained from bore holes and field tests. Then, an idealized soil profile was created using the laboratory and field test results, and site dynamic soil behavior analyses were performed on the extracted profile. According to The Turkish Building Code (TBC 2018), the earthquake level DD-2 design spectra of the project site were determined and the average design spectrum was created. Considering the seismicity of the project site and TBC (2018) criteria (according to site-specific faulting, distance, and average shear wave velocity), 11 earthquake ground motion sets were selected and harmonized with DD-2 spectra in short, medium, and long periods. Using scaled motions, the soil profile was excited with 22 different earthquake scenarios and the results were obtained for the equivalent and non-linear models. The analysis showed that the soft soil conditions in the area amplified ground shaking by up to 2.8 times, especially for longer periods (1.0–2.5 s). This level of amplification was consistent with the damage observed in mid- to high-rise buildings, highlighting the important role of local site effects in the structural losses seen during the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes.
