The effect of welding parameters on weld bead geometry in gas tungsten arc welding applications by response surface methodology model

Yildirim, Mehmet Serkan; Ayhan, Emre; Aydin, Kemal; Durgutlu, Ahmet

This study examines the effects of tungsten electrode sharpening angle, torch angle, and arc length on weld bead geometry in gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). Low-carbon steel plates (4 mm thickness) were welded using ER70S-6 filler wires (2 mm diameter). Experimental analyses and response surface methodology (RSM) revealed that increasing the electrode sharpening angle enhances penetration depth, while reducing the torch angle widens the bead. Longer arc lengths decrease penetration but increase bead width. Validation tests confirmed the accuracy of the RSM models, showing an average deviation of 1.14%. Analysis of variance highlighted the statistical significance of linear, quadratic, and interaction terms in the models. The findings provide critical insights for optimizing GTAW parameters, improving weld quality, and advancing process control, thereby contributing both practical and academic value to welding research.

Protective Effects of Dexmedetomidine and Amifostine Against Radiotherapy-Induced Kidney Injury

Batcik, Sule; Tumkaya, Levent; Dil, Eyup; Kazancioglu, Leyla; Gaygusuz, Elif; Yazici, Zihni Acar; Ozden, Zulkar; Kilinc, Kagan; Mercantepe, Tolga

Backgrounds: Approximately 18 million individuals were diagnosed with cancer in 2018. The rate is predicted to exceed 22 million by 2030. Radiotherapy is an essential part of cancer therapy, with well documented local and systemic side effects, including oxidative stress and apoptosis. Kidney tissues are also exposed to the deleterious effects of radiotherapy, resulting in acute or chronic kidney function impairment. This study compared the effects of the potent selective α2-adrenoreceptor agonist dexmedetomidine and amifostine on oxidative stress and apoptosis in kidney damage induced by x-irradiation in rats. Methods: Forty Sprague Dawley rats were assigned into five groups: control, x-irradiation, x-irradiation + amifostine, x-irradiation + dexmedetomidine 100 µg/kg, and X-ray irradiation + dexmedetomidine 200 µg/kg. Results: Necrotic tubules and degenerative Bowman’s capsules were present in the x-irradiation group. An increase was determined in malondialdehyde (MDA), Cleaved Caspase-3, and 8-OHdG levels compared to the control group (p ≤ 0.05). In contrast, there was a decrease in necrotic tubules, degenerative Bowman’s capsules, and the levels of MDA, Cleaved Caspase-3, and 8-OHdG in the amifostine and dexmedetomidine 100 µg/kg and 200 µg/kg treatment groups (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusions: Alpha 2 adrenergic receptor agonists exhibit protective effects against kidney injury induced in association with x-irradiation by reducing oxidative stress and apoptosis.

How do green hotel practices affect guests’ behavioral intentions? A PLS-SEM approach; [Como as práticas hoteleiras verdes afetam as intenções comportamentais dos hóspedes? Uma abordagem PLS-SEM]

    Genç, Gökhan; Zengin, Burhanettin

This study examines how guests’ perceptions of green hotel practices (GHP) shape their behavioral intentions, drawing on the Theory of Planned Behavior. It explores the extent to which eco-friendly practices influence guests’ loyalty and their likelihood of recommending hotels that prioritize sustainability. Data were collected from 642 hotel guests aged 18 and over who had previous experience with green hotel practices. An online survey was employed, and the data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with bootstrapping techniques to assess the relationships among guests’ perceptions of GHP, satisfaction, and behavioral outcomes. The findings indicate that favorable perceptions of GHP strongly predict guest loyalty and recommendation intentions, with satisfaction as a critical mediator. These results highlight the pivotal role of sustainable practices in fostering positive guest experiences and behaviors in the hospitality industry. The study offers practical insights for hotel managers, enabling them to design and implement effective sustainability strategies that enhance guest satisfaction and loyalty. Furthermore, it contributes to the literature on sustainable tourism by providing robust empirical evidence on the influence of GHP on guest behavior, thus addressing a key gap in hospitality management research.

Research of Peganum harmala: Phytochemical Content, Mineral Profile, Antioxidant, Antidiabetic, Anticholinergic Properties, and Molecular Docking

İzol, Ebubekir; Turhan, Münire; Yapıcı, İsmail; Necip, Adem; Abdullah Yılmaz, Mustafa; Zengin, Gökhan

Peganum harmala is a significant medicinal, aromatic plant used in traditional medicine and the subject of many studies. In this study, the phytochemical compound and mineral profile of the plant's ethanol extract were identified quantitatively. Antioxidant properties were determined by total phenolic and flavonoid content, FRAP, DPPH, CUPRAC, ABTS, metal chelating, and phosphomolybdenum assays. Antidiabetic, anticholinergic, and skin care properties were specified by the inhibition of tyrosinase, α-glucosidase, α-amylase, butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzymes, respectively. In addition, binding interactions of major phytochemicals with all enzymes were investigated by molecular docking studies. The phytochemical compound of the extract contained significant bioactive components such as acacetin, gentisic acid, p-coumaric acid, quinic acid, rutin, apigenin, and chrysin, while the mineral profile was rich in salt elements. AChE, BChE, tyrosinase, α-amylase, and α-glycosidase enzyme inhibitor results were determined as 2.99 mg GALAE/g, 4.14 mg GALAE/g, 35.8 mg KAE/g, 2.76 mmol ACAE/g, and 1.20 mmol ACAE/g, respectively. As a result, it was identified that it had antioxidant properties and strongly inhibited all enzymes except tyrosinase. The docking scores of major bioactive phytochemicals were found to be high. The best binding pose was obtained by docking acacetin into the active site of AChE (PDB: 4EY7), BChE (PDB: 4BDS), α-glucosidase (PDB: 3WY1), α-amylase (PDB: 6GXV) and tyrosinase (PDB: 2Y9X) receptors. Docking score values were calculated as −10.4, −9.2, −8.8, −7.8, and −7.4 kcal/mol, respectively. Thus, it was revealed that P. harmala has an important potential in drug research and treatment of some diseases.

The Effect of Heavy Metals in Mining Emissions on Worker’s Blood Lead Levels: A Case Study of The Gumushane Zn-Pb Mine, Turkey

Bozbeyoğlu, Pınar; Doğan, Onur; Budak, Burhan

The wastewater from mining facilities contains toxic elements such as arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb). If not disposed of correctly, it can lead to environmental pollution in case of accidents or overflow. Lead-zinc mining activities pose a significant risk of high blood lead levels (BLLs) among workers. Therefore, monitoring the blood lead levels of workers exposed to these heavy metals, especially lead, is crucial. This study aims to determine the levels of potentially harmful elements in the wastewater dam of the largest Zn-Pb mine in the Black Sea Region. It also seeks to assess the environmental and human health risks comprehensively. Additionally, the study aims to establish a relationship between the levels of lead in the mining wastewater in Gumushane and the lead levels accumulated in the blood of workers exposed to this metal. The study analyzed heavy metals such as As, Zn, Cu, Sb, and Pb in mining wastewater using Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS). The results indicated high levels of Pb in the studied wastewater. Furthermore, the blood lead levels of workers in the mining area (n=30; mean: 7.42 μg/dL) exceeded background levels (>40 μg/dL). These results suggest a significant relationship between the presence of lead in wastewater and high lead levels in the blood of individuals with high exposure to concentrated lead.

Comprehensive study on the role of mycrisparite in enhancing strength, stability, and microstructural traits of self-compacting mortars

    Etli, Serkan; Yılmaz, Tekin

The present research work aims at promoting the mechanical, durability and microstructure performances of self-compacting mortars (SCMs) and lessening the cement production-induced costs and environmental difficulties, by replacing binder with definite proportions (2.5–15%) of MS. To achieve these goals, the compressive and flexural strength (UCS, FS), freeze–thaw (F–T), sorptivity (Sp), MIP (tP, psD) and SEM tests were conducted on SCMs cured for diverse (7–90 days) ages. The outcomes unearthed that replacing binder with MS at small proportions boosted the UCS/FS performances of SCMs. These improvements in strength performance compared to MS-0 were more spectacular in MS-2.5, which produced higher UCS and FS of 8.6–21.0% and 10.0–25.7%, respectively at all curing ages. Similarly, the same SCMs, which betrayed lower UCS- (10.3 < 16.7) and FS-losses (31.6 < 41.0) than the control at the end of the 200-cycle F–T test, were able to remain more endurance against F–T deterioration. Besides, MS replacement up to 10% enabled the SCMs to exhibit lower tP- (up to 11.2%) and Sp values (up to 61.2%) by ameliorating the psD (refining the larger pores into finer pores). The current research can be consequently commented to provide more beneficial SCM design on both strength/stability and microstructure, and cost and environmental troubles for the building industry.

Integrated Geophysical Survey (GPR, ERT and Magnetometry) at the Kalehisar Archaeological Site in Central Anatolia

Kayın, Sercan; Aydın, Nedim Gökhan; Apaydın, Orhan; İşseven, Turgay

Kalehisar Archaeological Site, located near Mahmudiye Village in the Alaca district of Çorum, provides important insight into the Anatolian Seljuk period and 13th–14th century settlements in Central Anatolia. The main objective of this study is to determine the location and depth of possible buried archaeological remains within the archaeological site. This approach not only guides future excavations but also contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of settlement patterns and architectural practices during the Seljuk period. To achieve this, a comprehensive geophysical survey was conducted, employing magnetometry, electrical resistivity tomography and ground penetrating radar methods. Spectral analysis was used to interpret magnetic anomalies and identify potential buried features. Ground penetrating radar measurements provided high-resolution subsurface imaging, allowing for the detection of fine-scale stratigraphic variations and potential shallow buried remains. Electrical resistivity tomography helped identifying subsurface structures with contrasting resistivity down to 10-m depth. Integrated geophysical results revealed wall continuations extending from the excavation area, alongside other buried features such as ceramic/pottery kilns and a possible mosque in a few depths from the surface. These findings are consistent with Seljuk-era settlements and can aid future excavations by optimizing resources and preserving archaeological integrity.

Remanent magnetization and magnetic relaxation in Bi:2223/ag tapes fabricated by the Powder-in-Tube (PIT) method at 30 K

    Düzgün, İbrahim; Çelebi, Selahattin

In this study, the remanent magnetization and magnetic relaxation behaviour of Bi-2223/Ag superconducting tapes fabricated using the Powder-In-Tube (PIT) method were investigated. Measurements were conducted at a fixed temperature of 30 K, both under various field cycling amplitudes and in constant magnetic field conditions to analyse time-dependent magnetization. The remanent magnetization values obtained after full magnetic cycles were normalized and compared with theoretical predictions based on the extended critical state model. Additionally, magnetic relaxation curves were recorded at 30 K to evaluate flux creep characteristics. A clear logarithmic decay in magnetization was observed, indicating the coexistence of at least two distinct pinning regimes. These results contribute to a deeper understanding of flux dynamics and magnetic stability in Bi-2223/Ag PIT tapes for practical superconducting applications.

Narrative empathy in young adult literature: Am I normal yet?

    Demir, Nalan

Mental health issues are increasingly common in modern societies, yet public awareness has not kept pace. The invisibility of psychological disorders and fear of stigma contribute to this gap. Early detection is vital, especially among young people. Literature with its impact on emotional and cognitive development, can help raise awareness and provide support. This study examines Holly Bourne’s Am I Normal Yet? through the lens of narrative empathy to explore how fiction can shape perceptions of mental illness. It analyzes the novel’s first-person narration and embodied narration, which may evoke empathy for the protagonist experiencing obsessive-compulsive disorder. These techniques can encourage emotional engagement and foster compassionate attitudes toward mental health challenges. Moreover, such literature may offer validation and solidarity to struggling readers. Ultimately, this research highlights young adult fiction's potential to enhance mental health literacy and act as an empathetic bridge between individual experience and societal understanding.

Concurrent Validity of the Optojump Infrared Photocell System in Lower Limb Peak Power Assessment: Comparative Analysis with the Wingate Anaerobic Test and Sprint Performance

Khemiri, Aymen; Negra, Yassine; Ceylan, Halil İbrahim; Hajri, Manel; Njah, Abdelmonom; Hachana, Younes; Yıldız, Mevlüt; Bayrakdaroğlu, Serdar; Muntean, Raul Ioan; Attia, Ahmed

Aim: This study analyzed the concurrent validity of the Optojump infrared photocell system for estimating lower limb peak power by comparing it with the 15 s Wingate anaerobic test (WAnT) and examining relationships with sprint performance indicators. Methods: Twelve physically active university students (ten males, two females; age: 23.39 ± 1.47 years; body mass: 73.08 ± 9.19 kg; height: 173.67 ± 6.97 cm; BMI: 24.17 ± 1.48 kg·m−2) completed a cross-sectional validation protocol. Participants performed WAnT on a calibrated Monark ergometer (7.5% body weight for males, 5.5% for females), 30 s continuous jump tests using the Optojump system (Microgate, Italy), and 30 m sprint assessments with 10 m and 20 m split times. Peak power was expressed in absolute (W), relative (W·kg−1), and allometric (W·kg−0.67) terms. Results: Thirty-second continuous jump testing produced systematically higher peak power values across all metrics (p < 0.001). Mean differences indicated large effect sizes: relative power (Cohen’s d = 0.99; 18.263 ± 4.243 vs. 10.99 ± 1.58 W·kg−1), absolute power (d = 0.86; 1381.71 ± 393.44 vs. 807.28 ± 175.45 W), and allometric power (d = 0.79). Strong correlations emerged between protocols, with absolute power showing the strongest association (r = 0.842, p < 0.001). Linear regression analysis revealed that 30 s continuous jump-derived measurements explained 71% of the variance in Wingate outcomes (R2 = 0.710, p < 0.001). Sprint performance showed equivalent predictive capacity for both tests (Wingate: R2 = 0.66; 30 s continuous jump: R2 = 0.67). Conclusions: The Optojump infrared photocell system provides a valid and practical alternative to laboratory-based ergometry for assessing lower limb anaerobic power. While it systematically overestimates absolute values compared with the Wingate anaerobic test, its strong concurrent validity (r > 0.80), large effect sizes, and equivalent predictive ability for sprint performance (R2 = 0.66–0.71) confirm its reliability as a field-based assessment tool. These findings underscore the importance of sport-specific, weight-bearing assessment technologies in modern sports biomechanics, providing coaches, practitioners, and clinicians with a feasible method for monitoring performance, talent identification, and training optimization. The results further suggest that Optojump-based protocols can bridge the gap between laboratory precision and ecological validity, supporting both athletic performance enhancement and injury prevention strategies.

Effect of basic parameters defining principal soil-structure interaction on seismic control of structures equipped with optimum tuned mass damper

    Araz, Onur

One of the most effective systems for reducing dynamic responses of the structures subjected to earthquake excitations is tuned mass dampers (TMDs). In the traditional design theory of TMDs, the structures are assumed to be rigidly connected to the ground. Using this approach, known as the fixed foundation approach, may lead to deterioration of the performance of the TMD in cases where soil-structure interaction (SSI) is significant. Therefore, it is crucial to consider the SSI effects to obtain the optimum parameters of the TMDs. Unlike previous studies, two key parameters (i.e., structure-to-soil stiffness ratio and aspect ratio of the structure) are considered, which define the principal SSI effects on the effectiveness of TMD. For the aspect ratio of the structure, three different values (i.e., λ = 1, 2, and 4) are considered, these values correspond to the squat, ordinary, and slender structures representing traditional buildings, respectively. Four different values (i.e., a0 = 0, 0.5, 1, and 2) are also considered for the structure-soil stiffness ratio. This ratio being equal to 0 corresponds to the fixed foundation approach. This also demonstrates that the structure is constructed on hard rock. The optimum parameters of the TMD are obtained using the Jaya algorithm (JA). The proposed methodology is applied to three different buildings (i.e., 3-story, 6-story, and 12-story), and the optimum parameters of the TMD are verified using a total of 72 ground motions corresponding to NEHRP site classes C, D, and E. Numerical results show that the effectiveness of TMD is significantly affected by the basic parameters that define the principal SSI. In addition, the efficiency of the TMD is significantly related to the characteristics of the ground motions. It has been observed that TMD does not perform adequately in reducing vibrations in low-rise buildings (i.e., λ = 1) constructed on low-stiffness soils (i.e., a0 = 2).

Reliability and Validity of the Turkish Version of the Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire

    Arslan, Kübra; Hatipoğlu, Ertuğrul

A multidimensional scale to measure family resilience, which focuses on facilitating positive adaptation and strengthening the family unit when affected by high-stressful events, does not exist in Turkish. The aim of this study was to adapt the Family Resilience Scale into Turkish and to conduct a validity and reliability study. The Family Resilience Scale was translated into Turkish and back-translated. Simple random sampling was used to create a representative sample of adults from 321 families selected in Turkey in 2022. The reliability of the scale as a whole and of the subscales was examined using Cronbach’s alpha. Test-retest reliability, the scale was administered to 30 individuals two weeks apart to determine reliability using the test-retest method. Cronbach alpha coefficients were greater than 0.70 for all scales. The test-retest reliability for the General Family Resilience Scale score was found to be.725. According to the results of the confirmatory factor analysis, chi-square χ2 = 2.598; RMSEA= 0.071; SRMR= 0.06; IFI= 0.90; CFI= 0.90; GFI= 0.89; TLI= 0.88. This study provides evidence that the Family Resilience Scale has good validity, reliability and test-retest reliability for Turkish families. Further testing, including construct validity and testing in different contexts, will strengthen the evidence. This scale will find application in resilience research, clinical settings, and facilitate the development and evaluation of intervention programmes to build resilience in Turkish families.

Investigation of structural and adhesion properties of ZnO and h-BN doped TiO2 coatings on Cp–Ti alloy

Belet, Ali Kadir; Şüküroğlu, Süleyman; Şüküroğlu, Ebru Emine

Titanium and its alloys are widely used in aircraft, automotive, chemistry, marine, and military industries owing to their superior properties such as specific strength, very low density, high melting point, high corrosion resistance, good fatigue strength and toughness, low elastic modules, and excellent biocompatibility. However, insufficient tribological properties such as high and unstable friction coefficient, low scraping wear resistance and strong adhesion tendency, and poor corrosion resistance in some aggressive corrosive environments such as severe chloride solution limits the use of titanium and its alloys in some engineering applications. For this reason, it has become quite common to change and/or improve the surface properties of titanium and its alloys. In this study, the structural properties of TiO2 coatings with zinc oxide (ZnO) added TiO2 and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) added TiO2 grown composite coatings, respectively, on Cp–Ti substrates by micro-arc oxidation method and the adhesion behavior between the base material and coatings were investigated.

A record of the Lebanese Lizard (Phoenicolacerta laevis) in northern Türkiye: Evidence of possible human-mediated dispersal

Şahin, Mehmet Kürşat; Çetintaş, Ortaç; Yanchukov, Alexey; Kurnaz, Muammer

The Lebanese Lizard (Phoenicolacerta laevis), primarily native to the Levant region, has recently been discovered in isolated populations well beyond its known distribution. This study presents the first confirmed record of P. laevis along the Black Sea coast of northern Türkiye, specifically in the city of Karadeniz Ereğli, Zonguldak Province. Mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt b) sequence analyses revealed a high degree of genetic similarity (>99%) between the Karadeniz Ereğli specimens and those from both Andırın, Kahramanmaraş (within the species' native range in southern Türkiye) and Anaklia on Georgia's Black Sea coast, suggesting a shared origin. We propose that the presence of P. laevis in Karadeniz Ereğli is likely the result of human-mediated introduction, possibly via maritime trade, as the lizards were found restricted to the walls of a single building near a major port. A comparable introduction scenario has previously been suggested for the Anaklia population. The highly localized occurrence and absence of the species in neighboring areas indicate a recent introduction; however, the factors inhibiting further spread within the urban landscape remain unclear. This finding contributes to the broader understanding of species distribution dynamics and underscores the significant role of anthropogenic activity in facilitating the range expansion of non-native reptiles.

Association Between Cyber Pornography Use and Sexual Health Literacy and Sexual Function in Women of Reproductive Age: A Cross-Sectional Study

Bilgiç, Fatma Şule; Yıldız Karaahmet, Aysu; Karakaş, Sevda

This study aimed to examine the association between cyber pornography use, sexual health literacy, and sexual function in women of reproductive age. This cross-sectional study was conducted via an online platform using Google Forms between January 25 and February 23, 2025, with 1,202 female participants aged 18–35. Data were collected using a Data Collection Form, the Cyber Pornography Use Scale-9 (CPUS-9), the Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale (ASEX), and the Sexual Health Literacy Scale (SHLS). The average age of the participants was 23.19 ± 3.34 years. The mean total score for CPUS-9 was 2.26 ± 1.34, for ASEX was 14.98 ± 6.80, and for SHLS was 57.65 ± 13.18. A weak positive correlation was found between CPUS-9 and SHLS, while a weak negative correlation was observed between ASEX and SHLS. According to regression analysis, as sexual dysfunction increased in women, cyber pornography use also increased (β = 0.550), resulting in a 0.57-unit increase. Furthermore, as sexual health literacy increased, cyber pornography use also increased (β = 0.190), leading to a 0.19-unit increase. The findings suggest that cyber pornography use in women is associated with sexual function and sexual health, and these associations may relate to individuals’ levels of sexual health literacy.

Petrochemistry and geochronology of Middle Eocene high-K calc-alkaline I-type Kazıkbeli pluton, NE Turkey: implications from zircon U-Pb ages and Sr-Nd-Pb-Lu-Hf isotope data

    Güloğlu, Zikrullah Samet; Kaygusuz, Abdullah

The Kazıkbeli pluton, located in the Kürtün (Gümüşhane) region of the Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey, was studied by employing zircon U-Pb geochronology, whole-rock geochemistry, Sr-Nd-Pb and zircon Lu-Hf isotope geochemistry. LA-ICP-MS U-Pb zircon dating revealed that the gabbroic diorite and granodiorite components of the pluton solidified during the Lutetian epoch of the Middle Eocene, at approximately 46.10 ± 0.26 Ma and 45.37 ± 0.29 Ma, respectively. The pluton is composed of calc-alkaline rocks, ranging from gabbroic diorite to granite (SiO2 = 55.3 to 72.4 wt%). These I-type rocks are typically metaluminous but exhibit peraluminous tendencies in some cases. They are enriched in large ion lithophile elements and display concave chondrite-normalized rare earth element patterns (LaN/YbN = 4.39 to 6.67) with negative Eu anomalies (EuN/Eu* = 0.45 to 0.80). The initial εNd values ranged from 1.85 to 2.24, and the initial 87Sr/86Sr(i) ratios ranged from 0.70458 to 0.70484, consistent with a mantle source in the isotope ratio diagram. The initial 206Pb/204Pb(i), 207Pb/204Pb(i), and 208Pb/204Pb(i) ratios ranged from 18.505 to 18.571, 15.595 to 15.601, and 38.560 to 38.590, respectively. They have positive εHf(i) values (5.75 to 8.03), located between depleted mantle and chondrite evolution values. Fractional crystallization of plagioclase, hornblende, and Fe-Ti oxide minerals played a significant role in the magma evolution, while assimilation and magma mixing may have had a minor influence. Collectively, the evidence suggests that the primary magma source for these plutonic rocks was an enriched lithospheric mantle. Subsequent differentiation within crustal magma chambers, with limited crustal contamination, shaped the final magmatic evolution.

Iron oxide (BHFeNP) and silver nanoparticles (BHAgNP) were produced using a green synthesis method through the extract of buckwheat husk (BH) waste to remove dye pollutants from water bodies in this study. The BHFeNP and BHAgNP were characterized by TEM, SEM, XRD, EDX, and FTIR techniques. Then, the methylene blue (MB) removal performance of the synthesized nanoparticles (NPs) was investigated. MB adsorption experiments showed that BHFeNPs were more dependent on temperature, adsorbent amount, and pH, while BHAgNPs notably depended on adsorbent amount, initial MB concentration, and pH. BHAgNPs had higher adsorption rates than BHFeNPs, and the Langmuir isotherm was more suitable for the adsorption process. BHAgNP and BHFeNP were shown to have the maximum adsorption capacities of 96.3 and 53.4 mg/g at pH 8 and 25 °C, respectively, in the presence of 0.25 g/L NP. Kinetic and thermodynamic calculations revealed that MB adsorption was spontaneously endothermic and supported the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The antibacterial potentials of BHFeNPs and BHAgNPs were investigated against two gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and two gram-positive (Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus) bacterial strains. BHAgNPs exhibited a higher antibacterial activity against the strains used. In cytotoxicity studies with ARPE-19, A549, HeLa, and DU-145 cell lines, it was observed that BHAgNP had a greater cell growth inhibition effect than BHFeNP and BH extract. Examining the morphological changes in the cells exhibited that BHAgNP significantly inhibited A549 and ARPE-19. Reusability studies of the generated NPs revealed MB removal capabilities of 92.5% and above after the fifth stage. The present study demonstrates that BHAgNP and BHFeNPs are viable nanoadsorbents for the elimination of environmental pollution due to their excellent removal performances and stable adsorbent characteristics.

Long-term mechanical and physical behavior of rural concrete roads: A case study from Trabzon; [Kırsal beton yolların uzun vadeli mekanik ve fiziksel davranışı: Trabzon’dan bir vaka çalışması]

    Seferoğlu, Mehmet Tevfik; Lermioğlu, Fatma

This study evaluates the long-term mechanical and physical performance of rural concrete pavements-defined as two-lane, unreinforced jointed plain concrete pavements constructed with a C25 mix design, an average slab thickness of 18–20 cm, serving low-to-moderate traffic volumes (<500 vehicles/day, <10% heavy vehicles), and built directly over compacted granular subgrade-using cylindrical core samples extracted from five neighborhoods in Trabzon, Türkiye: Çal, Gökçeler, Derecik, Çiğdemli, and Yolgören. Laboratory tests included compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, elastic modulus, capillary water absorption, and abrasion resistance. Yolgören exhibited the most severe deterioration, with a 34.84% loss in compressive strength, the lowest tensile strength, and the highest abrasion loss (0.088%), primarily attributed to poor drainage and heavy traffic. Derecik showed 22.18% strength loss and the lowest elastic modulus (14.9×103 MPa), likely due to weak subgrade and freeze-thaw cycles. Çal displayed moderate strength but had the highest capillarity coefficient and significant stiffness reduction (elastic modulus: 15.7×103 MPa), indicating high porosity and freeze-thaw damage. Çiğdemli performed best in surface durability, with the lowest abrasion loss (0.026%) and satisfactory elastic modulus. Gökçeler presented a rare case of strength gain (+0.85%) and retained acceptable stiffness, though minor surface wear (abrasion loss: 0.038%) was observed. These findings demonstrate that mix design alone does not guarantee long-term durability in rural pavements. Site-specific factors-such as curing effectiveness, drainage planning, subgrade preparation, and climate-must be considered in pavement design. A context-sensitive, performance-based approach is recommended for the sustainable development of rural road infrastructure.
