Optimizing Visibility of Historical Structures Using Modified Weighted Differential Evolution: Insights from the Kromni Valley, Gümüşhane, Türkiye

Günen, Mehmet Akif; Öztürk, Kaşif Furkan; Aliyazıcıoğlu, Şener

It is very important for historical structures to see each other in order to reveal the historical and cultural identity of a region. Historical structures in the Kromni Valley of Gümüşhane, located near the Sümela Monastery, served as places of worship, communication, trade, and social activity centers during their period of active use. This study analyses the spatial relationships of 38 historic buildings, including churches, chapels and castles, whose 3D models are created by in-situ measurements and point clouds obtained by unmanned aerial vehicles, using a 3D viewshed analysis using geographic information systems and remote sensing data. The research introduces a modified weighted differential evolution-based viewshed analysis (mWDE-WS) to enhance the visibility of these structures. In order to assess the applicability of the proposed method, a statistical comparison was conducted between four different Differential Evolution (DE) algorithms (standard DE, LSHADE, CobiDE, JADE and WDE) and the mWDE. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test indicates that mWDE is a more effective solution than alternative methods for addressing the relevant real-world issues. The study also integrates drainage network analysis to assess flood risks and the relationship between cultural structures and water flow. Findings show that historical structures in the region were built not randomly but within a rational approach and 64% of the study area is visible from structures and 2% of the area is visible from ten or more structures. mWDE-WS analysis revealed that the visible area could increase by 20% to 84.37% if the historic structures were placed in optimal locations. In addition, the historical structures were built away from 3rd order streams to minimize flood risk and humidity, demonstrating the community's awareness of the local topography and hydrology.

DAPNet++: density adaptive PointNet + + for airborne laser scanning data

    Akbulut, Zeynep; Karsli, Fevzi

Addressing the challenges arising from the irregularity and varying density of Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) point clouds, which particularly affect the performance and generalization ability of 3D Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), is essential for their effective application in direct semantic segmentation tasks. In this study, we investigated the underexplored aspect of adapting PointNet + + for semantic segmentation of ALS point clouds. We introduced Density-Adaptive PointNet++ (DAPNet++) to enhance robustness against variable point densities through modifications made to the original PointNet + + architecture. Our methodology includes controlled block partitioning based on point density replacing the original batching strategy. Another key advancement in the study is the automation of the initial value of the neighborhood search radius by taking into account the characteristics of the dataset. This approach optimizes receptive field determination, crucial for effective semantic segmentation. The effectiveness of DAPNet + + is validated through extensive experiments on various datasets, including ISPRS Vaihingen, DALES, subsampled DALES, and OpenGF. Notable improvements include up to 11% increase in weighted mean Intersection-over-Union (mIoU) on the highly variable OpenGF test dataset and 3% increase in mIoU on the subsampled DALES dataset. Furthermore, the generalization capability of the DAPNet + + was tested, revealing an approximately 5% improvement in evaluation metrics compared to PointNet++. In summary, DAPNet + + minimizes trial-and-error in the selection of parameters for block partitioning and radius, and it enhances robustness against variable point density. With the proposed approach, it has been observed that there is a significant improvement in accuracy for underrepresented classes, mitigating class imbalance in ALS point clouds.

Technological and nutritional aspects of fresh purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) in ice cream production

    Hezer, Fatma; Gündoğdu, Engin

Purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) is rich in ω-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and minerals, and has notable neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antioxidant, anticancer, and antihypertensive properties. This research evaluated the effect of fresh purslane (FP) on the physicochemical and nutritional properties of ice cream, including α-linolenic acid (ALA; 18:3; ω-3), mineral content, and antioxidant properties, along with sensory characteristics. FP was added at 0, 5, 10, and 15% (w/w) levels. The addition of FP significantly increased the iron (Fe), calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), sodium (Na), oleic acid (OA), and ALA contents (P < 0.05). FP also increased the first dripping and complete melting times, while decreasing overrun and viscosity. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) remained unchanged (P > 0.05), but total phenolic content (TPC) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity significantly increased (P < 0.01). Thirty-one volatile compounds were identified, with increases in octadecane, dodecane, and 2-hexenal concentrations due to FP addition. Although the addition of FP improved the ALA content and antioxidant properties, sensory results showed that FP over 5% (w/w) lowered taste and general acceptability scores. Thus, using 5% of FP in ice cream is optimal for enhancing nutritional properties.

Advanced brain tumor analysis: a novel strategy for segmentation and classification using modern computational methods

    Reis, Hatice Catal; Turk, Veysel

Despite their low incidence, brain tumors are one of the most invasive cancer types, constituting a significant burden of death and disease in all age groups. Early and accurate diagnosis of brain tumors plays a vital role in reducing mortality rates. The heterogeneous nature of brain tumors and the diversity of tumor lesions may make it difficult for radiologists to make the right decision in the manual diagnosis process. This study proposes the use of machine learning methods for the classification of brain tumors (pituitary, meningioma, and glioma) and the use of metaheuristic algorithms graph theory, and random walker algorithms in the segmentation of brain tumors. The classification performed with the proposed method obtained an overall accuracy rate of 98.33%. In addition, the classification accuracy of 99.50%, 99.50%, 98.67%, and 99.00% was achieved for no tumor, pituitary, meningioma, and glioma, respectively. Experiments in the segmentation process show that metaheuristic algorithms and max-flow graph cut approach produce successful results.

Discontinuities identification from rock outcrop using auto-encoder and point clouds

    Günen, Mehmet Akif; Aliyazıcıoğlu, Şener

Rock slopes and geotechnical structures often exhibit discontinuity planes, which significantly influence their mechanical behavior and stability. The precise identification of these discontinuities is critical for ensuring the safety and cost-effectiveness of construction projects. However, previous methods are often limited by subjectivity, low automation, and challenges in inaccessible or hazardous environments. This study introduces a novel seven-step approach utilizing auto-encoders for estimating the orientation parameters of individual discontinuity sets from point cloud data. The steps include: data collection, filtering point clouds to eliminate outliers, determining neighborhood size, feature extraction, training a stacked auto-encoder for feature learning, estimating discontinuity sets using density-based clustering, and calculating individual discontinuities through the least squares method for orientation parameter estimation. In addition, the methodology incorporates a planarity-based approach for estimating neighborhood size. The statistical performance has been validated through evaluations in two real case studies and one synthetic case study. The classification achieves an accuracy exceeding 95%, highlighting the high efficacy of the approach. Results for orientation parameter estimation show consistency with existing methods and in situ measurements, with average orientation values for discontinuities within 5 degrees for individual sets. This framework represents a considerable advancement in rock discontinuity analysis, offering a robust and automated solution that is particularly effective in hazardous and hard-to-reach areas.

Motivating Green Transition: Analyzing Fuel Demands in Turkiye Amidst the Climate Crisis and Economic Impact

Coruh, Emine; Yıldız, Mehmet Selim; Urak, Faruk; Bilgic, Abdulbaki; Cengiz, Vedat

Decarbonizing the transportation sector is critical for sustainable development, particularly in rapidly urbanizing countries like Turkiye. This study analyzes fuel demand elasticities for diesel, gasoline, and LPG across 12 NUTS-1 regions of Turkiye in 2022, using a panel random effects SUR approach. The model accounts for regional variation and fuel interactions, producing robust estimates that uncover significant spatial and temporal differences in consumption patterns. Uniquely, diesel demand displays a significantly positive price elasticity, challenging the conventional assumption of inelasticity. Gasoline demand is moderately price-sensitive, while LPG appears relatively unresponsive. Strong cross-price elasticities—especially between diesel and gasoline—point to substitution effects that can inform more adaptive policy frameworks. Seasonal fluctuations and Istanbul’s outsized impact also shape national trends. These findings underscore the need for differentiated region- and fuel-specific strategies. While higher gasoline taxes may effectively reduce demand, lowering diesel and LPG use will require complementary measures such as infrastructure upgrades, behavioral incentives, and accelerated adoption of alternative fuels. The study advocates for regionally adjusted carbon pricing, removal of implicit subsidies, and targeted support for electric and hybrid vehicles. Aligning fiscal tools with actual demand behavior can enhance both the efficiency and equity of the transition to a low-carbon transportation system.

Discontinuity characterization for slope stability assessment using combined aerial photogrammetry, and geophysics approach

Junaid, Muhammad; Abdullah, Rini Asnida; Ullah, Arshad; Sa’ari, Radzuan; Mahmood, Sajid; Rehman, Hafeezur; Rehman, Safi ur; Sari, Mahmut

An expeditious and precise slope stability assessment approach is required to mitigate the personnel and economic losses due slope failure disaster. This study successfully determines various discontinuity properties such as degree of fracturing, discontinuities orientation and persistence using combine unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and 2D electrical resistivity tomography (2D ERT) to evaluate the stability of the slope. The discontinuity orientations govern the various modes of failure such as planar, wedge, and flexure toppling. Whereas the degree of fracturing of the rock mass evaluates the quality of the rock mass using Rock Quality Designation (RQD) index. In addition, the persistence is defined as the extent to which the discontinuity on exposed surface rock intruded inside the rock mass. The 3D point cloud from UAV images allows to obtain the discontinuity orientations to analyse the potential failure at the site. The upper portion of the slope has no risk of planar and wedge failure, whereas 20% of the discontinuities are favourable for flexure toppling. In contrast, at the lower section of the slope 1.04%, 4.86% and 20% discontinuities are prone to planar, wedge and flexure failure respectively. At the same time the RQD index obtained via UAV survey reveals that the respectively area covered by very poor, poor, fair, good, and excellent rock were 7 m2, 3904 m2, 38,775 m2, 42,943 m2, 1546 m2. The ERT survey enable to estimate the area covered by poor, fair, good and excellent rock were 4 m2, 1650 m2, 2592 m2, 27,729 m2, and 55,200 m2, respectively. Both the UAV and 2D ERT survey shows the poor-quality rock in the north-east of the slope that reveals that the discontinuities are extended inside the rock mas. This study, therefore, conclude that the combined 2D ERT and UAV approach is efficient and expeditious approach for comprehensive slope stability assessment.

Geochemical evaluation of black limestones in the Early Cretaceous platform carbonates of Gümüşhane (NE Turkey): An insight into petroleum source rock potential and palaeoenvironment conditions

Saydam Eker, Çiğdem; Arı, Uğur Volkan; Alemdağ, Selçuk

This study assesses the organic matter (OM) content, kerogen type, maturity, depositional environment conditions and sedimentation model of Early Cretaceous (Berriasian–Aptian) black limestones in NE Turkey using geochemical analyses, including Rock-Eval/total organic carbon (TOC), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, major and trace elements and stable carbon isotope of OM measurements. The investigated black limestones' TOC, hydrogen index and potential yield values range from 0.07 to 2.91 wt%, 76 to 636 mg HC/g TOC and 0.15 to 11.17 mg HC/g rock, respectively. These results indicate that the examined limestones have variable source rock potential, ranging from low to high. Tmax values, calculated saturated biomarkers and aromatic components suggest that the OM contained in the black limestones varies between thermally immature and mature, consistent with the potential index values. The OM found in the black limestone contained kerogen varying between type I and III. It is a composition of marine and terrigenous OM, as shown by the δ13C isotope values, biomarker components and n-alkane distributions and their parameters. This OM was deposited in a salinity water environment with marine–terrigenous (transitional) surroundings under oxic, suboxic to anoxic and arid–hot climate conditions. These findings provide critical insights for assessing the hydrocarbon potential of carbonate platforms in similar geological settings.

Performance evaluation and optimization of nontraditional inerter-based tuned mass damper for seismic control of multi-story buildings considering SSI effects

    Araz, Onur

This article presents the optimum design and performance evaluation of a control system that can be an alternative to traditional inerter-based tuned mass damper (TMDI) used in reducing vibrations in a multi-story building under earthquake effects considering soil-structure interaction (SSI). The optimum design of this system, known as NIDVA-C4 in the literature, has been carried out previously considering the randomly excited undamped main system. The key novelty of this work is to demonstrate the applicability of this system to suppress earthquake-induced vibrations in a multi-story building and to deliver more accurate and reliable results by integrating SSI effects into the optimization framework. Due to the difference in location and connection, this system is called N-TMDI in this paper. A case study from the literature featuring a ten-story building is used to implement the design process, assess performance, and conduct comparisons. The optimum parameters of the N-TMDI are obtained using the hybrid PSO-SA algorithm in the frequency domain. Validation using real earthquake records under varying soil conditions confirms the reliability of the proposed optimization framework. The coupled dynamic equations of motion for the structure - N-TMDI, accounting for SSI effects, are formulated and solved in the time domain using the Newmark-β method. An extensive parametric analysis is conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the N-TMDI in improving the seismic response of the buildings. The results consistently demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed protection strategy across a wide range of parametric configurations, highlighting its potential as a viable seismic mitigation strategy for a multi-story building.

Characterization of the complete mitogenomic and phylogenetic of the Columba livia breed Şebap pigeon

Çelik, Romedi; Bilgen, Nüket; Yigin, Akın; Gürler, Şükrü; Bozkaya, Faruk; Kutlu, Furkan; Akkurt, Mustafa Yenal

The initial phase of the studies focused on the conservation of gene resources involves the phenotypic and genetic characterization of existing breeds. By elucidating the differences at the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) level, a particularly suitable source for genetic analyses, it becomes feasible to calculate genetic distances between local breeds, identify potential domestication centers through evolutionary analyses, and construct phylogeny trees depicting kinship relationships between among breeds. Şanlıurfa holds significance in pigeon breeding due to its prolonged history of traditional pigeon breeding, establishing itself as one of the pigeon domestication centers. This study aims to genetically characterize Şebap pigeon breed which is specific to Şanlıurfa province in Türkiye. The mitogenome of the Şebap pigeon was analyzed by next generation sequencing and determined to be 17,232 bp in size, comprising 13 Protein-Coding Genes (PCGs), two Ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), 22 Transfer RNAs (tRNAs). The overall mitogenome composition includes 29.6% for A, 24.5% for T, 31.2% for C, and 14.7% for G, with a notable A–T richness of 54.1%. Notably, ND6 is encoded on the L strand while the others are encoded on the H strand. Our study has provided a comprehensive examination of whole mitochondrial DNA. Using this information, we have constructed a phylogenetic tree, locating the Şebap pigeon within the rock pigeon lineage.

Background: Weight gain during pregnancy, loosening of the foot ligaments with relaxin hormone release, and anthropometric and biomechanical changes can be seen in the foot with the growing fetus. We sought to determine whether these pregnancy-related changes cause painful musculoskeletal problems by altering the proximal structures of the lower extremities and the structure of the spine. Methods: Both feet of 210 women (half in the third trimester of pregnancy) aged 18 to 40 years with similar demographic characteristics were evaluated by measuring navicular drop, hallux valgus angle, foot width, foot length, and tibiocalcaneal angle. Foot Function Index for foot-ankle, Kujala Patellofemoral Score for knee, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index for hip, Oswestry Disability Index for waist, and Modified Neck Disability Index for neck were used to determine pain and functional limitation. Results: Pain and functional disability in the waist, hip, knee, and foot-ankle joints; navicular drop; hallux valgus angle; and tibiocalcaneal angle were significantly higher in pregnant women versus the control group (P < .001). Pain and dysfunction in all of the joints increased as navicular drop increased in pregnant and nonpregnant women. In addition, the increase in other anthropometric measurements in both groups was determined to caused pain and functional disability in most of the women, especially in foot-ankle joints. However, the cause of joint pain and functional deficiencies was unrelated to pregnancy. Conclusions: Foot deformities and proximal region complaints were significantly higher in pregnant women, and foot deformities caused more foot-ankle pain and disability in both groups. No difference was observed in pregnant women versus the control group.
