Revisiting the depositional age and provenance characteristics of metasedimentary rocks from the basement units in the Central Pontides (N Turkey): New constraints for tectonic evolution of the southern Black Sea region

Cimen, Okay; Gucer, Mehmet Ali; Akal, Cueneyt; Goncueoglu, Mehmet Cemal; Arslan, Mehmet; Simonetti, Antonio; Karaoglan, Fatih

The pre -Jurassic tectonic evolution of the Central Pontides in northern Turkey is still poorly understood due to the lack of detailed geochemical and geochronological data from the basement units. Therefore, this study reports for the first time combined whole rock geochemistry, trace element data and U-Pb ages for detrital zircons, and Ar-Ar geochronological data from the metasedimentary rocks of the Devrekani Massif, Geme Complex, and the Serve & ccedil;ay Unit to better understand their provenance, depositional age characteristics, and tectonic evolutions. The detrital zircon U-Pb data of metasedimentary units from the Devrekani Massif, Geme Complex, and the Serve & ccedil;ay Unit yield ca. 191, 185 and 298 Ma maximum depositional ages (youngest age peaks), respectively. The Devrekani Massif is dominated by Permo-Carboniferous-aged detrital zircons (67 %), whereas Neoproterozoic and Devonian -aged detrital zircons are more common in the Geme Complex (47 %) and the Serve & ccedil;ay Unit (53 %). These distinct age distributions clearly indicate that the Devrekani Massif may has been deposited in a dissimilar location compared to the Geme Complex and the Serve & ccedil;ay Unit. Furthermore, in contrast to the Devrekani Massif, the source area of the metasedimentary rocks from the Geme Complex is comparable with that of the Serve & ccedil;ay Unit. Lastly, the obtained detrital zircon U-Pb and mica Ar-Ar ages suggest that the Devrekani Massif and the Geme Complex were deposited and metamorphosed during the Early and Middle Jurassic, respectively. The Serve & ccedil;ay Unit was deposited and metamorphosed in the Permian.

Karagöz, Mustafa Fevzi; Koçyigit, Emine; Koçak, Tevfik; Sirin, Aycil Ozturan; Icer, Mehmet Arif; Agagündüz, Duygu; Coreta-Gomes, Filipe

Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages worldwide, recognized for its unique taste and aroma and for its social and health impacts. Coffee contains a plethora of nutritional and bioactive components, whose content can vary depending on their origin, processing, and extraction methods. Gathered evidence in literature shows that the regular coffee consumption containing functional compounds (e.g., polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, and melanoidins) can have potential beneficial effects on cardiometabolic risk factors such as abdominal adiposity, hyperglycemia, and lipogenesis. On the other hand, coffee compounds, such as caffeine, diterpenes, and advanced glycation end products, may be considered a risk for cardiometabolic health. The present comprehensive review provides up-to-date knowledge on the structure-function relationships between different chemical compounds present in coffee, one of the most prevalent beverages present in human diet, and cardiometabolic health.

Kayhan, Recep Fatih; Bayrakdaroglu, Serdar; Ceylan, Halil Ibrahim; Eken, Ozgur; Bayrakdaroglu, Yesim; Badicu, Georgian; Al-Mhanna, Sameer Badri; Enoiu, Razvan-Sandu; Ardigo, Luca Paolo

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 8 weeks of short and long rest running-based high-intensity training (HIIT) on body composition, isokinetic strength, and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). Nineteen physically active men were recruited to voluntarily participate in the study. The participants were grouped using the closed-envelope randomized method as HIIT with a short rest (HIITS, n = 9; age: 19.60 +/- 1.34 years) and HIIT with a long rest (HIITL, n = 10; age: 19.77 +/- 0.97). Pre and post the 8-week running-based HIIT program, body mass index and body fat % were measured and all subjects performed isokinetic strength tests to determine their hamstring (H)/quadriceps (Q) peak torque ratio and the peak power and peak work for their H and Q muscles. The participants also underwent a graded exercise test to determine their VO2max. Statistical analysis performed with One-Way Variance Analysis and Bonferroni correction post hoc tests. As a result of the study, there were no significant differences between the pre- and post-training isokinetic strength parameters for the H and Q of HIITL and HIITS at velocities of 60 and 240(degrees)s(-1). The VO2max did not change for HIITS training but the VO2max increased (p < 0.05) for HIITL training. In conclusion, that HIITL and HIITS programs for 8 weeks did not change the relative and absolute strength, force production and the VO2max, but the VO2max increased (p < 0.05) for HIITL training.

Late pleistocene glacial history of Mount Karadag, SW Turkiye

Bayrakdar, Cihan; Çilgin, Zeynel; Saris, Faize; Yesilyurt, Serdar; Keserci, Ferhat; Büyükdeniz, Yusuf; Halis, Onur; Vockenhuber, Christof; Ivy-Ochs, Susan; Akçar, Naki

Glacial landforms in the southwestern part of the Anatolian Peninsula are found at lower elevations than the rest, suggesting that glaciers were present during the Late Pleistocene. Karadag, located west of the Western Taurus Mountains, provides evidence of the climatic conditions that facilitated this extensive glaciation. It is characterized by numerous peaks exceeding 2300 m above sea level (asl), with the highest peak reaching 2418 m, making it the region's largest glaciation area. This high mountain mass is composed mainly of limestone and dolomite. This study focuses on the glacial landforms in Karadag to reconstruct the Late Pleistocene glacial chronology and palaeoclimate of the Western Taurus Mountains. We employed detailed UAV photogrammetry, extensive fieldwork and mapping, surface exposure dating with cosmogenic 36Cl, meteorological measurements, palaeoglacier reconstruction, and palaeo-equilibrium line altitude (pELA) calculations. Karadag, a topographic barrier to humid air masses from the Mediterranean Sea, ranks as the second wettest area in the Western Taurus Mountains. At a meteorological station we installed in Karadag, an annual precipitation of 1700 mm or more was recorded, highlighting its significant precipitation. In Karadag, we have identified two glacial valleys with a maximum length of 4.5 km and six cirques. The glaciers reached their maximum extent around 22.4 f 2.8 ka during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), facilitated by the lowering of the pELA to 2090 m. During the LGM, the glaciers covered an area of approximately 3.5 km2 and reached a maximum thickness of about 140 m. Sample TRKR 10 at 2015 m probably belongs to the LGM period. Although a single sample does not conclude definitive conclusions, the presence of the moraine at its highest position indicates the maximum thickness of the glacier. Following the LGM, two more significant glacier advances occurred during the Lateglacial (15.5 f 2.7 ka) and the Younger Dryas (12.4 f 1.1 ka). During the late Pleistocene glaciations, and especially during the LGM, Karadag probably received more precipitation than today, leading to the formation of glaciers at relatively lower elevations than on the Anatolian Peninsula.

Söyler, Mehmet; Zileli, Raif; Özkamci, Huseyin; Diker, Gurkan; Sever, Mehmet Onur; Bayrakdaroglu, Serdar; Ön, Sadi; Can, Ibrahim; Ulucan, Korkut; Aslan, Beste Tacal

The aim of this study is twofold: (1) to identify differences in certain anaerobic parameters (10m sprint, 30m sprint, anaerobic power, and Illinois agility tests) between professional and amateur soccer players, and (2) to determine whether there is a difference in the ACTN3 gene polymorphism between professional and amateur soccer players. Ultimately, the goal is to reveal which parameters contribute to the differentiation in these two aspects. A total of 133 volunteer soccer players, including 71 professionals and 62 amateurs, participated in the research. DNA extraction from buccal epithelial cells was performed using a commercial kit to determine the genetic background of the athletes, and Real -Time PCR was conducted for genotyping. Statistical analysis of the findings obtained from the test results was performed using the SPSS 23 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) package program. The homogeneity of variance of the data was assessed using the Levene Test, and normal distribution analyses were conducted using the Shapiro -Wilk Test. Chi-square and Mann -Whitney U tests were employed for parameter analysis. The significance level was set at p<0.05. Evaluation of the data in our study revealed no statistically significant difference in ACTN3 rs1815739 gene polymorphism between the groups (p>0.05). However, there is a statistically significant difference in anaerobic parameters (10m sprint, 30m sprint, and anaerobic power) except for the Illinois test (p<0.05). In conclusion, our study found that gene polymorphism is not a differentiating factor between professional and amateur soccer players, but speed (10m and 30m) and anaerobic power parameters are differentiating factors.

Supply chain resilience in the tourism and hospitality industry: A comprehensive examination of driving and restraining forces

Erol, Ismail; Oztel, Ahmet; Dogru, Tarik; Peker, Iskender; Neuhofer, Irem Onder; Benli, Tolga

Supply chain disruptions and a lack of resilient supply chains have adverse impact on the global economy. Particularly, complex nature of the tourism and hospitality industry makes it even more susceptible to failure when supply chain resiliency is rather low or does not exist. However, despite its significance, a comprehensive and systematic examination of building resilience in tourism and hospitality supply chains (THSCs) is lacking in the extant literature. The purpose of this study is to develop a comprehensive framework that outlines the driving and restraining forces for building resilient THSCs. The decision framework proposed in this study integrates rough interval valued neutrosophic (RIVN) force field theory of change with RIVN-ISM-MICMAC methodology. The results showed that the restraining forces, such as lack of effective regulations and incentives and effective organizational and supply chain policies are the primary factors that constrain improving resilience in THSCs. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Muglu, Halit; Yakan, Hasan; Erdogan, Musa; Topal, Fevzi; Topal, Meryem; Turkes, Cuneyt; Beydemir, Sukru

Exploring novel frameworks for treating Alzheimer's disease is an ambitious objective. In this particular context, a range of asymmetric biscarbothioamide derivatives (3a-l) with varying substitutions have been meticulously designed and effectively synthesized. The newly synthesized compounds have all been definitively characterized using established spectroscopic techniques such as 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, FT-IR, and elemental analysis. In vitro, all the derivatives (3a-l) were evaluated to assess their inhibitory potential against cholinesterase enzymes (acetylcholinesterase, AChE, and butyrylcholinesterase, BChE). The outcomes demonstrated that these derivatives were potent and exhibited selectivity in inhibiting AChE, except for compounds 3b and 3e, which specifically inhibited BChE, showcasing varying degrees of KI values. Significantly, compounds 3j (KIs of 11.91 +/- 2.25 nM for AChE and 77.76 +/- 8.02 nM for BChE) and 3h (KIs of 14.73 +/- 2.30 nM for AChE and 59.54 +/- 6.20 nM for BChE) emerged as the most potent dual inhibitors of AChE and BChE within the series, respectively, with KI constants even lower than those of the standard drug tacrine (KIs of 68.70 +/- 5.39 nM for AChE and 111.60 +/- 10.52 nM for BChE). Furthermore, their potential scavenging activity against DPPH and ABTS radicals was evaluated. To further validate the experimental findings, molecular docking studies were performed in silico to ascertain the binding modes of these compounds with the active pockets of AChE and BChE enzymes. Investigating innovative frameworks for addressing Alzheimer's disease is a challenging goal. In this specific scenario, a selection of asymmetric biscarbothioamide derivatives (3a-l) with different substitutions has been carefully formulated and successfully synthesized.

Comparative analysis of Glasgow Coma Scale, quick Sepsis-related Organ Failure Assessment, base excess, and lactate for mortality prediction in critically ill emergency department patients

Meral, Gurbuz; Ardiç, Senol; Günay, Serkan; Güzel, Kadir; Köse, Ahmet; Durmus, Hulya Gencbay; Uysal, Serhat; Coskun, Aydin

OBJECTIVES: It is crucial to promptly identify high-mortality patients in emergency departments and initiate their treatment as soon as possible. Although many parameters have been studied to select patients with high mortality, no comprehensive evaluation exists in previous literature on these parameters in critically ill patients, regardless of patient groups. The aim of this study is to evaluate the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), quick Sepsis-related Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA), blood gas base excess (BE), and blood gas lactate in predicting mortality in critically ill patients admitted to the emergency department. METHODS: This prospective observational cohort study included adult patients with Emergency Severity Index 1-2 (critically ill) admitted to the emergency department. All patients were evaluated by the physician within 10 min, and blood gas samples were taken. The data collection forms recorded the patients' GCS and qSOFA scores at the time of first evaluation by the physician. The qSOFA score assessment was performed in all patients with ESI levels 1 and 2, regardless of whether infective pathology was suspected. Blood gas BE and lactate values were also from laboratory test results. Patients or their relatives were contacted by phone at the end of the 1st month to obtain information about the clinical condition (survival or mortality). RESULTS: A total of 868 patients were included, with 163 deaths observed within 30 days. GCS score, qSOFA score, and lactate value were significant in predicting mortality within 30 days. While the BE value was significant for predicting 30-day mortality for values equal to or below the lower limit of -1.5 (P < 0.001), it was not significant for values equal to or above the upper limit of +3 (P > 0.05). The most successful prediction model for predicting 30-day mortality was found to be qSOFA with a cutoff value of >= 1. CONCLUSION: In emergency departments, each of the GCS, qSOFA scores, BE, and lactate values can be used independently as a practical mortality prediction model in critically ill patients. Among these four models, qSOFA is the most successful practical mortality prediction model in critically ill patients.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the most significant crops and the backbone of food security worldwide. However, low wheat production remains a substantial concern in global agricultural systems. It can be attributed to several factors, including adverse climatic conditions, plant disease and poor soil quality. Recent efforts have explored bioinoculant applications as a promising approach to enhance wheat yield, trying to mitigate constraints essential for future wheat production and global food security. This study tested talc powder, wheat biochar, sugarcane bagasse biochar, and farmyard manure as carriers with two endophytic bacterial strains, Burkholderia phytofirmans PsJN and Bacillus spp. MN54 was applied to three wheat varieties (Ujala-16, Zincol-16, and Fathejang-16). The data was recorded at the seedling and maturity growth stages of plants. A pot experiment revealed significant improvements in plant growth following bioinoculant application compared to controls. Notably, the combination of sugarcane bagasse biochar with Bacillus sp. MN54 exhibited the most pronounced effects, promoting internodal length, spike length, tiller number per plant, grain yield per plant, and spikelets per spike. Additionally, talc powder with Bacillus sp. MN54 increased peduncle length, tiller number per plant, and spike length in Fathejang-16. These findings offer valuable insights into optimizing bioinoculant formulations for improved agricultural practices, adapting to climate change, and contributing to ensuring global food security.

This study aims to examine how the subcomponents and overall measurement of ecological footprint, as well as the use of information and communication technologies, affect health expenditures. For this study, the sample group consisted of the top 25 countries with the highest ecological footprint for the period 2000 to 2021. System GMM estimation results demonstrate that economic growth and ecological footprint have a positive impact on health expenditures. Covid-19 dummy variables, have a statistically significant and positive effect on health expenditures. On the other hand, information and communication technologies has a statistically significant but negative effect on health expenditures. The estimation results show that the Covid-19 pandemic increased health expenditures. Looking at the effect of subcomponents of environmental degradation on health expenditures, all subcomponents have a statistically significant and positive effect on health expenditures. It is seen that the most effective variable is forest products. The variable that has almost the same impact as the footprint of forest products is the carbon footprint. Carbon footprint has significant and positive impact on health expenditures, followed by fishing grounds cropland, grazing land, built-up land. The results of the study indicate which forms of pollution should be given priority by policymakers in order to prevent an increase in health expenditure resulting from environmental degradation.

Pre-Exercise Caffeine and Sodium Bicarbonate: Their Effects on Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull Performance in a Crossover, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study

Kacoglu, Celil; Kirkaya, Izzet; Ceylan, Halil Ibrahim; de Assis, Gilmara Gomes; Almeida-Neto, Paulo; Bayrakdaroglu, Serdar; Oliveira, Cesar Chaves; Özkan, Ali; Nikolaidis, Pantelis T.

Caffeine and sodium bicarbonate are extensively researched ergogenic aids known for their potential to enhance exercise performance. The stimulant properties of caffeine on the central nervous system, coupled with the buffering capacity of sodium bicarbonate, have been associated with improved athletic performance. This has led to investigations of their combined effects on strength. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of isolated and combined caffeine and sodium bicarbonate consumption on strength using the isometric mid-thigh pull test (IMTP). Nineteen male college students (age 23.6 +/- 1.6 years) participated in this crossover, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. They were exposed to the following conditions: control (no supplement), placebo (20 g maltodextrin), caffeine (6 mg/kg), sodium bicarbonate (0.3 g/kg), and a combination of caffeine and sodium bicarbonate. Supplements and placebo were diluted in water and consumed 60 min prior to the IMTP tests. Two 5 s IMTP trials were performed at 40-60% and 60-80% of One Repetition of Maximum (1RM) with a 60 s rest between. Consumption of caffeine or Caf + NaHCO3 did not significantly change peak IMTP strength values at any intensity (p = 0.110). The peak IMTP values did not show significant differences between conditions or from control condition values (1091 +/- 100 N) to Caf (1224 +/- 92 N), NaHCO3 (1222 +/- 74 N), and Caf +/- NaHCO3 (1152 +/- 109 N). However, the test of the results of the ANOVA analysis of repeated measures of effect within the caffeine condition was significant for the increase in IMTP relative strength compared to control (p < 0.05). Thus, the IMTP force values increased significantly from control to Caf (p = 0.016) and from Pla to Caf (p = 0.008), but not for other comparisons (p > 0.05). In summary, caffeine supplementation alone, taken 60 min before exercise, positively affects submaximal strength performance. In contrast, sodium bicarbonate, whether taken alone or in combination with caffeine, does not enhance submaximal strength in the IMTP tests.

Investigation on the heat transfer and pressure loss of flow boiling in smooth and microfin tubes using machine learning methods

Sezer, Sukru; Sezer, Cihan; Celen, Ali; Bacak, Aykut; Dalkiliç, Ahmet Selim

The estimation of heat transfer coefficients (HTC) and pressure drop (Delta P) in flow boiling processes is essential for the effective design and operation of refrigeration systems. In this study, the artificial neural network (ANN), locally weighted regression (LWR), and gradient boosted machine (GBM) methods are employed to predict the boiling heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and pressure drop (Delta P\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}Δ P\end{document}) in flow boiling of R134a. The study focuses on horizontally positioned both straight and microfin tubes. The ANN, LWR, and GBM methodologies are utilized to ascertain the parameters of boiling HTC and Delta P as outputs. These parameters are determined by considering the mass flux, saturation pressure, heat flux, vapor quality, Reynolds number, Lockhart-Martinelli parameter, Froud number, Weber number, and Bond number as inputs. The training dataset is partitioned into 5 sections for the purpose of hyperparameter tweaking for each model. Out of these sections, 4 parts, consisting of approximately 111 samples, are utilized for training, while 1 part, including around 27 samples, is allocated for validation. The optimal hyperparameters are determined by calculating the average R2 score over the 5 validation sets. Using raw measurements, HTC and Delta P are successfully modeled using a relatively much smaller dataset of 174 measurements, with 82.4% R2 score and 0.7% weighted average relative deviation for HTC, and 88.9% R2 score and 4.1% weighted average relative deviation for Delta P across multiple tube types, achieved by LWR algorithm. Model performances are validated with an extrapolation test and found to be consistent with traditional train-validation-test sampling scheme with 75.9% R2 score and -6.2% weighted average relative deviation for HTC, and 89.3% R2 score and -3.9% weighted average relative deviation for Delta P, showing the consistency of the hypotheses created by a hybrid of parametric and nonparametric model families even outside the observed measurement range for multiple tube types. Local weighted regression models are the most performant, especially for limited data availability. However, calculated measurements increase error rates, suggesting that HTC and Delta P models work best with raw measurements.

Comparative Cranial Geometric Morphometrics among Wistar Albino, Sprague Dawley, and WAG/Rij Rat Strains

Agaç, Duygu Kucuk; Onuk, Burcu; Gündemir, Ozan; Kabak, Murat; Manuta, Nicoleta; Çakar, Buket; Janeczek, Maciej; Crampton, Denise Amber; Szara, Tomasz

Simple Summary Geometric morphometrics allows the examination of the shape variation of structures. In this study, the skull, mandible, and teeth of three different strains of rats were examined. The results showed that the strains significantly differed in shape. The most important shape difference in the skull was the variation of the cranium from an oval to an elongated structure. In this respect, Sprague Dawley rats showed a more elongated skull, while WAG/Rij rats had a more oval skull. Wistar Albino rats showed a more moderate shape variation. WAG/Rij rats showed very different shapes of the mandible and teeth compared to the other strains. But statistically, it was seen that all strains were completely separated from each other.Abstract This research utilizes geometric morphometrics to investigate shape variation in the skull, mandible, and teeth among three rat strains: Wistar Albino (WA), Sprague Dawley (SD), and WAG/Rij (WR). Through the analysis of 48 rats using 2D geometric morphometric techniques, significant differences in their skull morphology were identified. This study indicates a shift from a rectangular to an oval cranial shape across strains, with notable size and morphological variances. Particularly, the WR strain's skull shape significantly differs from the SD and WA strains, suggesting distinct ecological or genetic pathways. Compared to the skull, mandible shape differences are less pronounced, but still significant. The WR strain exhibits a distinct mandible shape, potentially reflecting ecological adaptations like dietary habits. The teeth shape of WR rats is the most distinct. SD rats consistently exhibited larger sizes in both skull and mandible measurements, while WR rats were notably smaller. Interestingly, sexual dimorphism was not statistically significant in skull and teeth sizes, aligning with findings from previous studies. However, the mandible showed clear size differences between sexes, underscoring its potential for adaptive or behavioral studies. In summary, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of morphological variations in rat strains, highlighting the intricate interplay of size, shape, and ecological factors. These findings lay a foundation for deeper explorations into the adaptive, ecological, or genetic narratives influencing rat morphology.

Introduction Drawing on Durkheim's historical theorization of suicide, we extend his concept of anomic suicide, which is suicide due to a lack of social regulation, to introduce the concept of institutional suicide. We define institutional suicide as suicide due to the absence or decline of institutional policies, practices, and discourses for prevention. In this study, we explore the mechanisms for institutional suicides based on suicide notes Turkey, in a context without institutional responsibilization for prevention. Turkey provides a significant context for studying institutional suicides as policies, practices, and discourses for suicide prevention have been declining for some decades. Methods Drawing on publically available suicide notes and narratives in Turkish media outlets, we analyze 17 suicide notes and responses from their institutions of work and friends, family, and colleagues.Findings and Discussion We identify two mechanisms that lead to institutional suicides: (1) dehumanization due to lack of recognition and (2) misrecognition through a devaluation of potential. We extend the theory of anomie to institutional settings and offer social policy suggestions to improve institutional responses based on co-design based on suicide notes to prevent institutional suicides and call for institutional responsibilization for preventing work-related suicides.

Background: Since children and adolescents usually spend their theoretical course time at schools, they experience many negative effects of inactivity and physical inactivity. They are disadvantaged in terms of facing many health and social problems due to lack of physical activity. This sedentary life increases their exposure to screens and the time they spend sitting. Aim of the study: The first aim of this research is to conduct an experimental study to reduce the excessive screen time of college students with an exercise intervention. The second aim of the study is to examine the perceived benefits of leisure activities of students with an exercise intervention. Methods: In this direction, the study group of the research, which was conducted as an experimental study, consisted of 176 [74 female (42.0%), 102 male (58.0%)] students studying in the department of mathematics at college. In the study, the screen exposure time of students was measured with the Screen time scale for youth and adolescents along with a personal information form. In addition, the Perceived Leisure Benefit Scale scale was used to evaluate the participants' awareness of the benefits obtained from leisure activities. Results and conclusion: According to the findings of the research, it was determined that there was a positive and significant decrease in the screen time of the experimental group participants of students who participated in the research before and after the exercise intervention. In the Leisure Benefit Scale, it was observed that there were significant positive differences in favor of the experimental group.

The study area is situated at Robert Island, which is located in the South Shetland Islands in the northwest of the Antarctic Peninsula. The diatom samples were taken as part of the Turkish Antarctic Expedition (TAE-II) which took place between March and April 2018. The samples were collected from the surface of sediments (c. 5 cm) at a depth of approximately 20 cm, 50-100 cm from the littoral zones of an inland glacial lake (L1) and three coastal lakes (L2, L3 and L4) situated on glacier-free area on Robert Island. The main objective of this study was to reveal the diversity and the abundance of diatom communities in the littoral sediments of the lakes on Robert Island. The lakes were shallow and oligotrophic freshwater lakes, although the coastal lagoons had a high conductivity and nutrient concentration. Twenty-six diatom taxa belonging to Achnanthes (1), Fragilaria (1), Frustulia (1), Gomphonema (1), Halamphora (1), Hantzschia (1), Hippodonta (1), Humidophila (2), Luticola (3), Melosira (1), Nitzschia (4), Pinnularia (3), Planothidium (2), Psammothidium (2), Stauroneis (1) and Stephanopterobia (1) were identified in the samples from these lakes. The coastal lake L2 showed the highest richness of diatom communities among the in studied lakes, with 21 identified taxa.
