Understanding the concept of energy through definitions, drawings, and metaphors

    Başkan Takaoğlu, Zeynep

Energy is a concept frequently encountered both in daily life and in various disciplines. Despite such a wide range of scope, conceptualizing it might be challenging at times. This study aims to investigate high school students’ views on the concept of energy through a set of various paper-and-pencil tests. For this purpose, 654 high school students from the ninth, 10th, and 11th grades were asked to explain the concept of energy using definitions, drawings, and metaphors. According to the results, the students had similar misconceptions about their definitions, drawings, and metaphors. However, situations from everyday life were depicted, particularly in drawings and metaphors. Misconceptions decreased considerably in the upper classes, and answers were presented that were close to scientific knowledge, suggesting that, over time, students’ abstract thinking skills improve, the knowledge gained at school contributes to explaining the situations in daily life scientifically, and scientific facts are conceptualized.

Geophysical and numerical approaches to solving the mechanisms of landslides triggered by earthquakes: A case study of Kahramanmaraş (6 February, 2023)

    Sari, Mahmut

Many landslides occurred in the 11 Turkish provinces affected by the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş in February 2023, and many people lost their lives due to those landslides. To reduce the risks and hazards brought on by landslides induced by earthquakes, it is essential to identify the mechanisms causing landslides to arise in such situations. In this study, the geological strength index and both seismic refraction tomography and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) geophysical methods were used to determine the failure mechanism of layered sedimentary units defined as flysch (claystone-siltstone-sandstone-marl). The shear strength reduction finite element method (SSR-FEM) was used with the RS2 computer program for model solutions. One of the geophysical methods, ERT, facilitated an interpretation of the cyclic failure mechanism that occurs in flysch, and it was found to be congruent with numerical models. Landslide slip circle depth, water-saturated layers, and resistivity values were determined with the ERT method. Seismic methods were employed to determine the velocity values (Vp, Vs) of the landslip mass. These velocity data, along with the elasticity modulus and Poisson ratios derived from them, were utilized in our numerical model. In the maximum shear strength and horizontal displacement analyses performed on the section line determined before the landslide, the natural state and the situation under the influence of groundwater were examined and the strength reduction factor (SRF) was determined as 1.35 and 1.24, respectively. In an evaluation conducted under the influence of the maximum horizontal ground acceleration (0.22 g) determined by taking into account the seismicity of the study area, it was concluded that instability occurred in the flysches and the SRF value was 0.72. An important finding of this study is that the results of geophysical methods used to determine the lithological properties of sedimentary rock masses and understand the causes of landslides align closely with those of numerical analysis methods, providing high accuracy. These methods also support new approaches, particularly in identifying landslip boundaries and detecting areas with high water saturation. It has been discovered that earthquakes actively contribute to the instability of these kinds of soils.

The relationships between the multidimensional planned behavior model, green brand awareness, green marketing activities, and purchase intention

Baltaci, Duygu Çinar; Durmaz, Yakup; Baltaci, Furkan

Introduction: This study investigates the determinants impacting consumer purchasing behavior. Methods: Utilizing multidimensional planned behavior theory alongside measures of brand awareness and green brand awareness, this study examines the mediating role of multidimensional planned behavior theory. Empirical data were gathered through a survey conducted among Generation Z university students, yielding 638 responses. Analysis was performed on 590 valid responses. Results: Findings indicate that green marketing initiatives and green brand awareness positively influence consumers’ purchase intentions. Subdimensions of the theory of planned behavior (TPB), namely, attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control, serve to strengthen these relationships and mediate the interaction process. Conclusion: This study contributes novel insights to the burgeoning field of green marketing literature, offering a structural model for firms and policymakers. It suggests that companies can effectively engage in informal consumer education through green marketing efforts, thereby influencing consumers’ purchasing decisions via planned behavior. Moreover, such activities foster an increase in consumers’ green brand awareness, providing companies with an opportunity to promote conscious consumer behavior. The study's utilization of the TPB is both timely and original, particularly in its alignment with the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

    Çakmak, Seher; Nural, Nesrin

Background: Oral mucositis is one of the most common symptoms in adults with a hematological cancer who are receiving high-dose chemotherapy. Propolis is a complementary and alternative method used to prevent oral mucositis in these patients. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of propolis in the prevention of oral mucositis in patients receiving high-dose chemotherapy and/or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Methods: A total of 64 patients, 32 in the propolis group and 32 in the control group, were enrolled in this prospective randomized controlled experimental study. Whereas the standard oral care treatment protocol was administered to the control group, aqueous propolis extract was applied to the propolis intervention group in addition to the standard oral care treatment protocol. Data collection forms included a Descriptive Information Form, the Karnofsky Performance Scale, the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale-Geriatric, Patient Follow-up Form, the World Health Organization Oral Toxicity Scale, and the National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events. Results: The incidence and duration of oral mucositis were statistically significantly lower in the propolis intervention group than the control group, and the onset of oral mucositis and grade 2 to 3 oral mucositis occurred later (P < .05). Conclusion: Propolis mouthwash combined with standard oral care treatment delayed the onset of oral mucositis and decreased its incidence and the number of days it lasted. Implications for Practice: Mouthwash with propolis can be used as a nursing intervention to decrease oral mucositis and its symptoms in hematological cancer patients receiving high-dose chemotherapy.

Gluconic Acid Production by Using Recombinant Escherichia coli Waksman pqq+ Cells with a Novel Approach from Biomass Sources

    Gül, Abdulkadir; Tanyıldızı, Muhammet Şaban

Gluconic acid (GA) is widely used in the pharmaceutical, food, detergent, textile, leather, and concrete industries. However, cost-effective and high-yield production of GA remains a challenge. Due to currently high raw material inputs of GA, various alternative carbohydrate sources are being investigated. Sucrose is one of the cost-effective biomass sources that can be used as feedstock. The most common industrial production of GA is based on wild-type bacteria and fungi, but there are many problems with this production. This study aimed to optimize the production of GA from glucose produced by hydrolysis of sucrose using recombinant E. coli Waksman (W) pqq+ strain. After sucrose was enzymatically hydrolyzed, significant medium components for GA production were determined as glucose, calcium carbonate (CaCO3), peptone, and ammonium phosphate ((NH4)3PO4) using Placket-Burman Design (PBD). Detailed optimization of the medium components that are significant in GA production was carried out using central composite design (CCD), and optimum values of the independent variables examined in maximum GA production (93.5 ± 2.95 g/L) were determined as glucose 95, CaCO3 25, peptone 2, and (NH4)3PO4 1.13 (g/L). Using results obtained in the Erlenmeyer experiments, GA production in the bioreactor was investigated by CCD. The maximum GA efficiency (3.20 ± 0.15 g/L. h) was obtained under conditions where the air supply rate was 10.82 L/min, stirring speed was 656.87 rpm, and CaCO3 concentration was 16.90 g/L. In conclusion, it has been shown that GA can be produced with a high yield with this novel approach using a recombinant strain for GA production from sucrose.

Nurse-led support impact via a mobile app for breast cancer patients after surgery: a quasi-experimental study (step 2)

    Aydin, Aydanur; Gürsoy, Ayla

Breast cancer patients may experience some health issues following surgery. Training patients about self-care plays a vital role in managing these symptoms. Mobile applications are a contemporary and appropriate approach to support patients about the potential symptoms following breast cancer surgery. This quasi-experimental study aimed to assess the impact of nurse-led support mobile application (NL-Mapp) delivered on breast cancer patients after surgery. Ninety participants were recruited, with 45 assigned to the intervention group and 45 to the control group. Subjects in the intervention group received NL-Mapp in addition to routine care, while those in the control group received only routine care over four weeks. The intervention included educational content on the postoperative period of breast cancer. Outcomes were assessed at baseline (M0), before discharge (M1), and one month after surgery (M2). The intervention group patients had significantly improved pain, affected shoulder functions, and anxiety owing to the effects of group, time, and group-time interaction. Body image and sexual adjustment were enhanced based on time and group-time interaction effects. During the follow-up period, experimental group patients experienced an improvement in body image and sexual adjustment, while those in the control group showed a decrease. This suggests that NL-Mapp may play a significant role in training breast cancer patients to manage their symptoms after surgery.

Education and reproductive health: evidence from schooling expansion in Turkey

    De, Prabal K.; Tümay, Muhammed

We investigate the role of additional years of schooling mandated by a compulsory schooling expansion law in affecting reproductive preferences and safe reproductive health behaviors in Turkey—a middle-to-high-income country with gender inequity in education but overall high levels of safe reproductive health practices at the time of passing the law. Using a fuzzy regression discontinuity design, we find that the additional schooling improved several health behaviors. However, the effects on some outcomes commonly analyzed in the existing literature, such as contraceptive use or fertility, were either weak or insignificant. Overall, our findings complement the current literature on the marginal health benefits of schooling expansion and suggest that policymakers consider the institutional and cultural factors while evaluating the scope and potential non-educational benefits of such expansions.

Determination of physicochemical and antioxidant properties of icecream produced with the addition of Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.); [Yer elması (Helianthus tuberosus L.) ilavesiyle üretilen dondurmanın fizikokimyasal ve antioksidan özelliklerinin belirlenmesi]

    Gündoğdu, Engin

The study investigates the effects of incorporating Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) into ice cream formulations on their physicochemical and antioxidant properties of icecream. Jerusalem artichoke (JA), known for its high inulin content and beneficial carbohydrates, was added to ice cream in varying concentrations (5%, 10%, and 15%) and evaluated for its impact on dry matter, protein, ash, pH, acidity, sugar content, viscosity, volume increase, initial dripping time, total melting time, color values, total phenolic content, DPPH free radical scavenging activity, and total antioxidant capacity. The results revealed that the addition of JA significantly improved the dry matter and antioxidant properties of the ice cream, with the highest values observed in samples containing 10% and 15% JA. Total phenolic content increased from 363.51 mg GAE/kg in the control to 587.47 mg GAE/kg with 15% JA, while DPPH scavenging activity rose from 12.49% to 18.04%. On the other hand, the control sample has the highest total antioxidant capacity (4517.29 mg AAE/kg), while the JA samples generally exhibit lower values. The protein content decreased slightly with the addition of JA, while ash content increased. The pH and titratable acidity values also showed significant changes, with higher concentrations of JA resulting in higher pH and acidity. Overall, the incorporation of JA into ice cream formulations enhances the nutritional and functional properties. These findings suggest that JA is a valuable ingredient for developing functional ice cream with potential health benefits.

Hysteretic behaviour of square-hollow-section T- and X-joints with in-plane bending moment

    Ozyurt, E.; Gunaydin, M.

This study examined the hysteretic behaviour of Square Hollow Section (SHS) T- and X-joints subjected to cyclic in-plane bending moments. A nonlinear finite element software, Abaqus, was used to investigate SHS T- and X-joint seismic performance. Prior to the parametric study, the numerical model was validated based on the available test results in the literature. A comprehensive parametric study employed validated finite element models to evaluate the influence of critical geometric parameters, including the brace-to-chord width ratio (β) and the chord width-to-thickness ratio (γ). The results of the finite element analyses regarding ductility, flexural strength, and energy dissipation behaviour of SHS T- and X-joints under quasi-static cyclic in-plane bending were evaluated. Based on the hysteretic curves, increasing β generally leaded to higher initial stiffness and moment capacity in SHS joints, considerably reducing joint rotation. Conversely, the joints with larger γ exhibited reduced initial stiffness and moment capacity. Besides, the Eurocode 3 EN1993-1-8 predictions for the ultimate flexural strength of the joints are found to be conservative compared to finite element results. The results also revealed that the SHS T- and X-joints showed satisfactory ductility levels under in-plane bending load. It was observed that the SHS T- and X-joints with high β and low γ are advantageous for absorbing energy under seismic loads. These findings offered valuable insights for the seismic-resistant design of structures incorporating SHS joints, aiding in selecting optimal configurations based on specific performance requirements.

Exploring the associations between ankle dorsal and plantar flexion strength, reactive strength index, and balance in elite youth soccer players

Kayhan, Recep Fatih; Terzi, Esranur; Bayrakdaroğlu, Serdar; Ceylan, Halil İbrahim; Morgans, Ryland; Nikolaidis, Pantelis T.

Background: Enhanced muscular strength has been widely acknowledged as a fundamental determinant of improved performance in the lower extremities. However, the specific impact of ankle strength on explosive strength and balance remains inadequately elucidated. Consequently, this study aims to (a) evaluate balance, reactive power, and flexor–extensor muscle balances in soccer players, and (b) evaluate ankle dorsal and plantar flexion muscle strength as predictive factors for reactive strength index and balance performance. Methodology: A cohort comprising 38 actively engaged Turkish National League soccer players participated in the study. The assessment encompassed explosive power through a drop jump, dynamic balance utilizing a moving disc, and ankle strength measured with a handheld dynamometer. Results: The findings revealed that dominant lower limb dorsal flexion strength emerged as a significant predictor of both reactive strength (R2 = 0.106, p < 0.05) and balance (R2 = 0.121, p < 0.05). Similarly, non-dominant lower limb dorsal flexion strength was identified as a significant predictor of reactive strength (R2 = 0.362, p < 0.05). Furthermore, the study established that dominant lower limb plantar flexion strength significantly predicted balance (R2 = 0.121, p < 0.05), while non-dominant lower limb plantar flexion strength served as a significant predictor of both reactive strength (R2 = 0.148, p < 0.05) and balance (R2 = 0.179, p < 0.05). Conclusions: Consequently, these findings emphasize the significance of incorporating targeted exercises designed to enhance intrinsic foot musculature, thereby augmenting both explosive strength and balance in athletes. While acknowledging the persistent importance of strength assessment in evaluating lower extremity performance, our results underscore the critical role played by ankle muscle strength in the execution of explosive strength and balance.
