Does evaluation of tumor volume or/both origination site better guide to optimal surgery for inverted papilloma?

Sahin, Muammer Melih; Yilmaz, Metin; Zorlu, Mehmet Ekrem; Göcek, Mehmet; Düzlü, Mehmet; Sayar, Erolcan; Ceylan, Alper

Introduction: Sinonasal inverted papilloma is noted for its high rate of recurrence. Staging systems aid to reduce recurrence and avoid excessive surgeries by guiding the selection of the optimal surgical approach. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of different endoscopic approaches in inverted papilloma by assessing tumor origin site and tumor volume. Methods: Krouse classification system that is based on tumor volume was used for staging; furthermore, tumor origin sites were grouped as lateral nasal wall, medial wall and other walls of maxillary sinus. The main treatment method for all patients was endoscopic sinus surgery. Endoscopic extended middle meatal antrostomy, endoscopic Caldwell-Luc and endoscopic medial maxillectomy were the additional surgery types performed in different combinations. Results: Fifty-five patients (42 male) with a mean 54.9 +/- 14.4 years of age were included. 37 patients were diagnosed with advanced stage inverted papilloma (67.2 %). Recurrence was observed in 12 patients (21.8 %). In early stage lateral nasal wall origination, no recurrence was observed in the simple tumor resection group (0/10). In early stage medial wall origination, no recurrence was observed in the extended middle meatal antrostomy group (0/8). In advanced stage medial wall origination, the recurrence rates of extended middle meatal antrostomy, extended middle meatal antrostomy + endoscopic Caldwell- Luc and endoscopic medial maxillectomy were 100.0 %, 53.8 % and 13.6 %, respectively (p =0.002). In advanced stage other walls of maxillary sinus origination, recurrence rates of extended middle meatal antrostomy + endoscopic Caldwell-Luc and endoscopic medial maxillectomy were 20 % and 16.6 %, respectively (p =0.887). Conclusion: Tumor origin site, tumor stage and surgery types show an impact on recurrence. Despite the fact that tumor origin site singly could lead to appropriate selection of the surgery type in most cases, tumor stage carries substantial importance in selection of surgery type for sinonasal-inverted papilloma. An operation plan regarding both tumor volume and tumor origin site may aid surgeons in selecting optimal endoscopic surgical method to avoid recurrence or excessive surgeries. Assessing the feasibility of blockchain technology in industries: evidence from Turkey

Erol, Ismail; Ar, Ilker Murat; Ozdemir, Ali Ihsan; Peker, Iskender; Asgary, Ali; Medeni, Ihsan Tolga; Medeni, Tunc

Purpose The objective of this study is to assess quantitatively how feasible blockchain is for various industries, such as logistics and supply chain, health, energy, finance, automotive, pharmaceutical and agriculture and food using a comprehensive list of indicators. Design/methodology/approach A decision aid was applied to the problem of identifying the feasibility of blockchain in Turkish industries. To this end, first, a set of indicators was identified. Then, the fuzzy AHP and fuzzy TOPSIS were utilized to assess the feasibility comparatively using the data gathered from a group of experts. Finally, a scenario analysis was conducted to ensure the consistency of our evaluation. Findings The findings of this study suggest that comparatively, logistics and supply chain, finance and health industries are the most feasible industries for blockchain. This study further suggests that blockchain is the least feasible for the automotive industry compared to the rest of the identified industries. Research limitations/implications It is cumbersome to find out the respondents who have sufficient knowledge of both blockchain and the identified industries. Even if we took the utmost care in identifying the right respondents, we limited our search to the biggest industrial hubs of Turkey. Practical implications The findings of this research may help various decision-makers employed in governments, conglomerates, software and consulting firms and national research institutions make more informed decisions and allocate their resources more effectively. Originality/value To this date, the current studies have solely investigated possible research opportunities in blockchain and demonstrated several blockchain applications in stand-alone cases. To the best of our knowledge, however, no single study exists that evaluates the feasibility of blockchain comparatively and holistically among a group of industries using various indicators.

Küçükosman, Rıdvan; Emine Şüküroğlu, Ebru; Totik, Yaşar; Şüküroğlu, Süleyman

Composite coatings were deposited on AZ91 magnesium alloys by micro arc oxidation (MAO) and the MAO-hydrothermal treatment (HT). The MAO process of Mg alloys was performed in the silicate/phosphate-based electrolyte with graphite particles size of 5-10 and 75 µm and then the obtained samples were submitted to hydrothermal treatment at 150°C in the graphite-ethanol mixture. The structural and morphological properties of composite coatings were analized X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The wear resistance was examined with ball-on-disc tribometer. The addition of graphite to the MAO electrolyte solution increased the coating thicknesses and compactness and the surface morphologies acquired relatively a homogeneous appearance. The coating surfaces were enriched in graphite by HT and the wear test results showed that the wear resistance of the graphite-doped MAO-HT composite coatings was significantly improved.

Innovative and polygonal trend analyses applications for rainfall data in Vietnam

Şan, Murat; Akçay, Fatma; Linh, Nguyen Thi Thuy; Kankal, Murat; Pham, Quoc Bao

It is a known fact that the size, frequency, and spatial variability of hydrometeorological variables will irregularly increase under the impact of climate change. Among the hydrometeorological variables, rainfall is one of the most important. Trend analysis is one of the most effective methods of observing the effects of climate change on rainfall. Recently, new graphical methods have been proposed as an alternative to classical trend analysis methods. Innovative Polygon Trend Analysis (IPTA), which evolved from Innovative Trend Analysis (ITA), is currently one of the proposed methods and it does not contain any assumptions. The aim of this study is to compare IPTA, ITA with the Significance Test and Mann-Kendall (MK) methods. To achieve this, the monthly total rainfall trends of 15 stations in the Vu Gia-Thu Bon River Basin (VGTBRB) of Vietnam have been examined for the period 1979–2016. The analyses show that rainfall tends to increase (decrease) in March (June) at nearly all stations. IPTA and ITA with the Significance Test are more sensitive than MK in determining the trends. While trends were detected in approximately 90% of all months in IPTA and ITA with the Significance Test, this rate was only 23% in the MK test. Although the arithmetic mean graphs in the 1-year hydrometeorological cycle are considerably regular at almost all stations, their standard deviations are relatively irregular. The most critical month for trend transitions between consecutive months for all the stations is October, which has an average trend slope of −1.35 and a trend slope ranging from −3.98 to −0.21, which shows a decreasing trend.

Relationship between Political and Financial Risks in Turkey: Evidence from Fourier Cointegration Analysis Regarding Institutional Structures; [Türkiye’de Politik ve Finansal Riskler Arasındaki İlişki: Kurumsal Yapılara Dair Fourier Eşbütünleşme Analizinden Kanıt]

    Çiçen, Yıldırım Beyazıt

Institutional structure and quality of management are the main elements that form the political risks. Political threats are directly linked to the institutional structure and the institutional design. Political risks increase if the government mechanisms fail. Increasing institutional quality reduces the political risks and positively impacts the financial risks. Monthly data from different indices are used to analyse the relationship between Turkey's political risks and financial risks between 2002 and 2015. According to the Fourier analysis of cointegration, there is a long-term relationship between the political and financial risks. Besides, as per the Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) findings and the Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS) models, an increase in the political risk increases the financial risk.

In vitro Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Activities of Extracts of Endemic Tanacetum erzincanense Together with Phenolic Content by LC-ESI-QTOF-MS

Yapıcı, İsmail; Altay, Ahmet; Öztürk Sarıkaya, Beyza; Korkmaz, Mustafa; Atila, Alptuğ; Gülçin, İlhami; Köksal, Ekrem

In this study, phenolic composition, and in vitro biological activities of ethyl acetate (EAE) and methanol (ME) extracts obtained from the aerial parts of endemic Tanacetum erzincanense were investigated. Total phenolic and flavonoid content of the extracts were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu and aluminum chloride colorimetric methods, respectively. Antioxidant capacity of the extracts was evaluated over radical scavenging (DPPH and ABTS) and metal ion reducing power (FRAP and CUPRAC) tests. Individual phenolic compounds in ME was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-QTOF/MS). Cell inhibitory potential of the extracts was tested against colorectal adenocarcinoma (HT-29), breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7), and hepatocarcinoma (HepG2) cells by 2,3-bis(2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide (XTT) assay. The results showed that ME contains higher TPC (64.4 mg GAE/g) and TFC (62.2 mg QE/g) than those of EAE (41.5 mg GAE/g and 40.0 mg QE/g). LC-ESI-QTOF/MS analysis revealed that ME is rich in phenolic compounds, namely, chlorogenic acid, apigenin, quercetin, luteolin, and diosmetin. Antioxidant assay results indicated that ME possess stronger activity than EAE and a power that competes with synthetic antioxidants. XTT assay results demonstrated that although both extracts displayed a considerable cytotoxicity against the tested cancer cell lines in a time and dose-dependent manner, ME expressed its selective inhibitory action towards MCF-7 cells with an IC50 value of 20.4 μg/mL for 72 h. These results may serve as a basis for further in vivo studies to examine the potential applications of T. erzincanense in food and pharmaceutical industries.

    Ürkek, Bayram

In this study, a mixture of salep and chia seed powder (CSP) at different ratios was used as a stabilizer in the production of ice cream. The effect of the mixtures was determined on the physical, chemical, color, rheological, thermal properties, instrumental hardness, and consumer acceptance properties of the ice cream samples. The viscosity, consistency coefficient, lightness (L*), whiteness index, (Formula presented.) (midpoint and offset), heat ice freezing, and melting values increased in the sample containing 0.6% salep and 0.2% CSP compared to the control sample and then decreased in accordance with the increment of CSP. The highest hardness value was determined in the sample containing CSP (0.8%). The control sample and sample containing 0.6% salep/0.2% CSP had the highest consumer acceptance scores. It was determined that 0.2% CSP could be used with salep to decrease the consumption of orchid species and to improve various quality properties of ice creams. Practical applications: Salep (Orchidaceae family) is generally used as a stabilizer in ice cream, and species of salep is been extinction day to day. This study indicated that the usage of the mixture of salep and chia seed powder can improve the quality properties of ice creams. Consequently, the mixture of salep (75%) and chia seed powder (25%) could be used as a stabilizer to reduce using salep and to protect species of salep to improve the quality properties of ice cream.

    BURNAZ, NESIBE ARSLAN

The study focuses on the comparative evaluation of extraction methods (ultrasonication and agitation) based on phenolic composition and antioxidative activities of Mammillaria prolifera and it is the first report on this subject. The effects of extraction conditions of temperature (25° and 60°), time (15, 30 and 60 min) and solvent type (water and 70 % and 100 % methanol) on total phenolic compounds, 2,2'-azinobis( 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl anti-radical activities and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power values were determined. Moreover, the phenolic acid compositions of the extracts were investigated by high performance liquid chromatography. The extracts prepared with the ultrasonic method showed stronger antioxidant activity than those prepared with agitation methods. In both methods total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity values were the lowest in the aqueous extracts. The results showed a positive correlation observed between total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities of the studied extracts. The optimal conditions for the extraction of phenolic compounds from Mammillaria prolifera were found as 60 min extraction time, 60° extraction temperature and 70 % methanol concentration by using the ultrasonication method. Notably, protocatechualdehyde, gallic acid, para hydroxy benzoic acid and ferulic acid were identified in Mammillaria prolifera by using the high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector system and 14 phenolic standards. Consequently, Mammillaria prolifera cladodes can be used in food or pharmaceutical practices, as a potential natural source of antioxidants.

Sajedi, Heidar; Bas, Mustafa; Aydın, Elif

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of different warm-up protocols (deep feelings, massage, dynamic traction) on different levels of blood lactate and anaerobic power of athlete students. The present study was quasi-experimental, with pre and post-test design and a control group and also three experimental groups. After announcing, 36 students who have had at least three years of professional sports experience were chosen among qualified students and they were set randomly in four groups of deep feelings, massage, dynamic traction, and control. Wingate test was used to measure anaerobic power. The 894E Monark performed the test Ergo medic as a Wingate test. The blood lactate of the participants of each group were measured in separate sessions using the German Scott Lactometer (using hand blood sample). We used two methods of petrissage and testament in the massage group. In the deep feelings group, the 11+ protocol designed by FIFA to improve performance and prevent player injury was used to warm up and five major muscles (Quadriceps femoris muscle, Hamstring, Hip flexor muscle, Hip Extensor muscle, Ankle Extensor) were stretched. The results show that there was a significant difference between the results of an anaerobic power test and blood lactate in those four groups. Based on the Tuki test and attention to the mean of post-test records compared to the pre-test, the two groups of dynamic traction and deep feelings compared to the control group had significantly welled performance in anaerobic power and blood lactate (P<0/05) and there was no significant difference in the massage group compared to the control group (P>0/05). As a result, it can be said that all three methods of warming up including dynamic traction, massage, deep feelings improve the performance of the participants in the anaerobic power and blood lactate test compared to the control group and performing the students of deep feelings and dynamic traction group in terms of anaerobic power and blood lactate is better than massage group.

Investigation of the removal of sulfamethoxazole drug waste from aqueous solutions under the effect of zinc oxide/montmorillonite nanocomposite by photocatalytic ozonation process

Özyürek, Işıl Nihan; Kıranşan, Murat; Karaca, Semra

In this study, the synergistic effect of photocatalysis and ozonation processes to degrade the sulfamethoxazole (SMX), one antibiotic pharmaceutical compound, has been studied through the influence of main operational variables such as zinc oxide/montmorillonite (ZnO/MMT) dos-age, SMX initial concentration, ozone flow rate, pH and the addition of organic and inorganic scavengers. Synthesized ZnO nanoparticles were immobilized on the montmorillonite surface to prepare ZnO/MMT catalyst as a photocatalyst. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray fluo-rescence, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, high-resolution transmission electron microscope and N2 adsorption/desorption. The highest SMX degradation efficiency (80.84% for 30 min of reaction time) was obtained for the photocatalytic ozonation process compared to adsorption, single ozonation, catalytic ozonation, and photolysis. ZnO/MMT was more effective photocatalyst according to ZnO, indicating its usability as a promising photocatalyst for the removal of organic contaminants in aqueous solutions. The reduced degradation efficiency with the addition of organic and inorganic scavengers showed the important role of the photo-produced radicals and holes as well as direct ozonation in SMX degradation. A mechanism is also proposed for photocatalytic ozonation degradation by using the gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis method. Finally, several by-products were identified by GC-MS analysis, which allowed to depict a possible mechanism for the sulfamethoxazole degradation.

Evaluating the chemical and metal contamination of commercial raki, a grape-based alcoholic beverage from turkey

    Menevseoglu, Ahmed; Cabaroglu, Turgut

Turkish Raki is one of the most consumed alcoholic beverages in Turkey. The chemical and metal contamination of alcoholic beverages is a threat to human health and lowers the quality of the product. Ethyl carbamate and furfural are carcinogenic to animals, and have been classified as Group 2A and 3 agents respectively by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Factors, such as raw materials, process time and storage, affect metal concentrations in beverages. Limits for chemicals and metals in Raki have not yet been established by the Turkish agency. The present study aimed to evaluate the chemical and metal contamination of commercial Turkish Raki. Thirty-seven different types of Turkish Raki were purchased from local markets in Turkey. Ethyl carbamate (EC) and furfural (FR) levels were measured by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS). Arsenic, copper, lead, and zinc levels were measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). None of the Raki samples contained EC. Furfural was not detected in commercial Raki samples but only in illegal Raki samples. Ethanol and methanol levels complied with Turkish regulation. Our data shows that commercial Raki from Turkey was contaminated by very low amounts of arsenic (<LOD-0.02 mg/L), copper (0.05-0.41 mg/L), lead (< LOD- 0.03 mg/L) and zinc (0.01-0.39 mg/L).

Mineral content, fatty acid composition, and volatile compounds of gluten-free tarhana formulated with different cereal and pulse flours

Çalışkan Koç, Gülşah; Tekgül, Yeliz; Erten, Edibe Seda; Akdoğan, Arda

Abstract: This research was intended to determine the effect of different cereal and pulse flours and commercial gluten-free flour on the mineral content, fatty acid composition, and volatile compounds of the gluten-free tarhana (cereal-based fermented dry soup). In order to produce the gluten-free tarhana, white bean (BF), chickpea (CF), commercial gluten-free (GWF), yellow lentil (LF), and rice (RF) flours were used. The Mg, K, Al, and Mn contents of tarhanas obtained using different pulse and cereal flours were found to be quite high compared to tarhanas produced with commercial GWF. The utilization of different cereal and pulse flours in the tarhana formulation resulted in an increase in the percentage (30.37–51.47%) of the total polyunsaturated fatty acid (TPUFA). The highest (452.4 µg/g) and the lowest (241.17 µg/g) total concentration of all compounds were detected in BF and GWF, respectively. The highest number (21) of compounds belonged to terpenes and terpenoids, followed by acids, hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, esters, ketones, and alkanes. Practical Application: This study shows that cereal and pulse flours can be used to produce acceptable tarhana with improved nutritional quality in terms of mineral and fatty acid contents. The results of the current study may be useful and applicable to food manufacturers producing gluten-free products for celiac patients.
