Phenolic Profiles, Mineral Compositions, and Solvent-Driven Antioxidant Potentials of Two Robinia Species

Aktürk, Betül Kara; Arslan Burnaz, Nesibe

The genus Robinia, which belongs to the Fabaceae family, is a source of polyphenols and may be medicinally and pharmacologically effective against life-threatening diseases. This study investigated and compared the phenolic profiles, mineral contents, and antioxidant activities of two Robinia species. The antioxidant activities and phenolic/flavonoid contents of aerial parts of Robinia pseudoacacia and Robinia × ambigua plants at various solvents and concentrations were investigated in detail for the first time. The findings revealed that 50% acetone leaf extracts are promising sources of high phenol/flavonoid contents and antioxidant activity. Liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–ESI–MS/MS) analysis allowed the identification of nine flavonoids and seven phenolic acids. Pelargonidin chloride, a common anthocyanidin with estrogenic activity, was the major component in all samples. Moreover, inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP–MS) shows that all samples were rich in K (12 886.70–26 078.11 mg/kg), Ca (1550.51–6011.03 mg/kg), and Mg (1676.13–3115.10 mg/kg). Leaves stand out compared to flowers. It is considered that the results obtained may guide studies in the fields of medicine, cosmetics, pharmacology, and so forth.

Novel Sulfonylhydrazones With Sulfonate Ester Framework: Promising Dual Inhibitors of AChE and hCAs

Öztürk, Cansu; Balci, Neslihan; Aslan, Osman Nuri; Kalay, Erbay

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects millions of individuals worldwide. Treatment strategies for AD vary depending on cognitive and behavioral symptoms, with cholinergic replacement therapy using acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors being one of the primary approaches. Recent studies have also identified human carbonic anhydrases (hCAs) as significant therapeutic targets for AD, offering new opportunities for the development of innovative treatments. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors have been shown to prevent early mitochondrial damage and inhibit H2O2 production, thereby reducing amyloid plaque formation. Building on the promising potential of hydrazones particularly sulfonyl hydrazones as anticholinesterase agents, we synthesized 12 novel chlorine-substituted sulfonyl hydrazone compounds containing aryl sulfonate ester groups. These compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory effects on AChE, hCA I, and hCA II enzymes. The synthesized compounds exhibited low nanomolar inhibitory activity, with Ki values ranging from 9.58 ± 2.22 to 104.04 ± 23.82 nM for AChE, 9.12 ± 2.21 to 477.63 ± 218.52 nM for hCA I, and 17.54 ± 7.74 to 564.62 ± 213.98 nM for hCA II. Notably, compound 6 showed strong inhibitory activity against hCA I (Ki = 9.12 ± 2.21 nM; acetazolamide (AZA) = 26.54 ± 3.11 nM) and hCA II (Ki = 17.54 ± 7.74 nM; AZA = 21.73 ± 2.42 nM), whereas compound 4 exhibited superior AChE inhibition (Ki = 9.58 ± 2.22 nM; TAC = 23.12 ± 2.05 nM). The chemical structures of the synthesized compounds were characterized using advanced spectroscopic techniques, including FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy.

Turkish Version of the Sense of Belonging in Nursing School Scale: Validity and Reliability for Nursing Students

Tuncer, Metin; Tuncer, Gülsüm Zekiye; Yalçınkaya, Turgay; İnce, Merve; Yücel, Şebnem Çınar; Khorshid, Leyla

Background: While a sense of belonging may be necessary for human motivation, the disruption of this sense of belonging among nurses can have implications for patient care and safety. Aim: This article was aimed at assessing the sense of belonging experienced by nursing students in three different settings (clinic, classroom, and student group) by conducting the validity and reliability of the Sense of Belonging in Nursing School (SBNS) scale, adapting it to the Turkish language and culture, and reporting the results. Methods: The study was conducted in a nursing faculty between March and July 2023. The study sample comprised 193 nursing students. We performed the content validity assessment of the 19-item SBNS scale after conducting a structural validity analysis using exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The Cronbach’s alpha and item-total score correlations were examined to assess the scale’s internal consistency. Results: The Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin measure of sampling adequacy for the SBNS instrument was 0.903, and the result of Bartlett’s test of sphericity was significant (χ² = 3182.764, p = 0.000), indicating that the scale was suitable for factor analysis. The eigenvalue analysis identified a four-factor structure explaining 76.74% of the total variance. These four factors were subsequently named as follows: (1) clinical compliance, (2) social belonging, (3) school support, and (4) clinical support. The goodness-of-fit values for the model obtained from the CFA were χ2/SD = 2.15, comparative fit index = 0.947, goodness-of-fit index = 0.852, normed fit index = 0.906, incremental fit index = 0.948, and root mean square error of approximation = 0.077, suggesting that the model fit was acceptable, and the four-factor structure was well distributed. The scale exhibited high internal consistency (α = 0.933). Discussion: The SBNS scale is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring the sense of belonging experienced by nursing students in three different environments. Further research is needed to establish its predictive validity. Conclusions and Implications for Nursing: This study was conducted, and there was no scale used in the Turkish literature to measure nursing students’ sense of school belonging; thus, it is the first in this sense.

Kiliç, Betülay; Palaz, Ilknur; Gürel, Tugba Yardimci

Heart failure (HF) is a progressive, life-limiting condition that often leads to complex physical, emotional, and social needs. This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the Turkish version of the Needs Assessment Tool: Progressive Disease-Heart Failure (NAT: PD-HF) to facilitate the timely identification of palliative care needs. A total of 98 patients with chronic HF, 91 caregivers, and 25 healthcare professionals participated in this single-centre validation study. The tool underwent forward-backward translation and pilot testing. Internal consistency was good (Cronbach’s α = 0.812), and inter-rater and test-retest reliabilities were high (PABAK: 0.908–1.000). Most patients (84.7%) found the tool understandable, and 67.7% felt it enhanced care. Healthcare professionals from cardiology, intensive care, and palliative care rated it as clinically relevant and feasible. The Turkish NAT: PD-HF is a valid, reliable, and culturally appropriate tool for identifying the palliative care needs of patients with HF and their caregivers. This tool can be integrated into routine clinical practice to facilitate early identification of palliative care needs.

A comparative study of cognitive function and reaction time in obese and non-obese adults

Yılmaz, Hacı Ömer; Şahin, Kezban; Ayvaz, Hilal

Objective: Obesity may negatively affect the physical health and cognitive functions of individuals and delay their reaction time to stimuli. However, the association among obesity, cognitive functions, and reaction times is yet to be fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of obesity on cognitive functions and visual and auditory reaction times in adults. Methods: Data of 100 participants (50 obese and 50 normal) were analyzed in the study. Anthropometric parameters and 24-h dietary recall data were recorded. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to evaluate the cognitive functions, Simple Reaction Time Task (SRTT)-Visual and SRTT-Auditory were used to assess visual and auditory reaction times of the participants, respectively. Results: The mean MoCA score of the obese was significantly lower than normal (17.46 and 25.22, respectively; p < 0.001). In addition, the mean auditory (p < 0.001) and visual (p < 0.05) reaction times of obese were significantly longer than normal. Similarly, this condition was also observed for the fastest and lowest values of auditory and visual reaction times. Additionally, obesity caused a decrease in the MoCA score (β = -0.762; p < 0.001) and delayed visual (β = 0.423; p < 0.001) and auditory (β = 0.590; p < 0.001) reactions. The negative effect of obesity was maintained after controlling for potential factors (MoCA, β = -0.594; p < 0.001; SRTT-Auditory, β = 0.409; p < 0.01; SRTT-Visual, β = 0.330; p < 0.05). Conclusion: Obese participants showed worse cognitive, auditory and visual performance. Additional research will be necessary in the future to shed light on the fundamental mechanisms involved.

Ecological footprint components and agricultural productivity: Insights from MENA countries

Recepoğlu, Mürşit; Hayaloğlu, Pınar; Cakir, Sümeyra Cay; Artan, Seyfettin; Cakir, Mehmet Ali

The surge in the global population over the past century has highlighted the importance of agricultural production, leading to many studies to boost productivity. Unlike previous studies that primarily explore agricultural productivity growth, this study investigates how the subcomponents of the ecological footprint affect agricultural productivity in MENA countries between 1992 and 2021, identifying which types of environmental pollution have the most significant impact. Driscoll and Kraay (1998) method results show that ecological footprint has a major negative impact on agricultural productivity. Similarly, all ecological footprint components have a negative impact on agricultural productivity. The forest footprint has the highest coefficient magnitude, followed by crop land footprint, carbon footprint, fishing grounds footprint and grazing land footprint. The results have been tested for robustness using the Half-Panel Jackknife test to avoid biased results, and parallel results have been obtained. Finally, the causality between agricultural productivity and explanatory variables has been tested using Dumitrescu and Hurlin (2012) panel causality test. The findings suggest that policymakers may find it more effective to eliminate pollution rather than using additional resources to increase agricultural productivity. This approach allows for the reallocation of resources used in agricultural production to other areas.

Exploring Nursing Students’ Metaphorical Perceptions and Cognitive Structures Related to the Global Climate Crisis's Impact on Nursing

    Ediz, Çiçek; Uzun, Sevda

Objective: This study aimed to explore the metaphorical perceptions and cognitive structures of Turkish nursing students related to the impact of the global climate crisis on their profession. Methods: Researchers adopted a qualitative approach centered on metaphor analysis and involved 40 Turkish nursing students enrolled in programs in Türkiye during October 2023. Using metaphor analysis and techniques involving writing and drawing, the study uncovered how these students perceive and cognitively structure the influence of the global climate crisis on their nursing careers. The interview form featured the metaphor expression “The reflection of the global climate crisis on nursing is like … because …,” while the drawing component prompted students to determine their perspectives on the climate crisis's impact on nursing through concept drawings. The research adhered to the COREQ checklist. Results: The study revealed that nursing students generated 22 metaphors each through written and drawing techniques. Written metaphors were grouped into five categories: psychosocial challenges faced by nurses, patient populations, diseases and coping, burdens on the health system, and the growing importance of various fields within nursing. Drawing technique metaphors were grouped into four categories: nurses and the difficulties they face, the impact of the global climate crisis on the world, the impact of the global climate crisis on the healthcare sector, and the roles and responsibilities of nurses. Conclusions: While nursing students expressed diverse opinions, their concerns about the reflection of the global climate crisis on nursing yielded similar emotional responses. Metaphors are mostly focused on psychosocial challenges faced by nurses, the patient population, diseases, and coping mechanisms. The findings underscored nursing students’ concerns about the global climate crisis's impact on both their profession and the broader community.

Self-Regulation of Eating Behaviors Among Young Women Nurses and Nursing Students: Its Relationship With Eating Habits

    Tuncer, Gülsüm Zekiye; Tuncer, Metin

The primary aim of this study is to adapt the Self-Regulation of Eating Behavior Questionnaire (SREBQ) to the Turkish culture among young women nurses and nursing students. The secondary aim is to investigate the factors associated with self-regulation of eating behavior in this population. The sample consisted of 773 young women nurses and nursing students who were included in the study between June and July 2024. In accordance with the first aim of the study, the construct validity of the SREBQ instrument was confirmed through EFA. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the SREBQ was found to be 0.78. There were very low positive correlations between the SREBQ score and the SRS (r = 0.252) and TREQ-CR (r = 0.136) scores, as well as low negative correlations with the TREQ-EE (r = −0.355) and TREQ-UE (r = −0.406) scores (p < 0.001). The 5-item SREBQ has been found to be a valid and reliable instrument for the population of young women nurses and nursing students in the Turkish language. The results indicate that as self-regulation of eating behavior increases in this population, overall self-regulation skills improve, while disordered eating behaviors decrease.

The Effect of Physical Activity on Anterior Segment Structures and the Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer: A Comparison of Elite Athletes and Sedentary Individuals

Deniz Genç, Çiğdem; Korkmaz Salkılıç, Esra; Anıl, Berna; Akdemir, Enes; Yılmaz, Coşkun; Yılmaz, Ali Kerim

Background and Objectives: The study aims to evaluate the effects of regular physical activity on ocular structures by comparing eye anterior segment structures and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) parameters between elite individual athletes and sedentary persons. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional observational study included 75 participants (33 female and 42 male) aged 18–32 years. Participants consisted of 33 elite individual athletes (66 eyes) aged 18–32 years and 42 sedentary individuals (84 eyes) aged 18–28 years. The elite athlete group consisted of participants who had trained ≥ 3 times per week for the past 5 years and had competition experience in tennis (n = 11), badminton (n = 8), and short/middle distance running (n = 14). Sedentary participants had not engaged in regular physical activity for the last 2 years. Anterior segment structures were measured with ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), RNFL parameters were measured with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), and intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured with a non-contact pneumotonometer. Results: When the anterior segment parameters were compared, a significance was found in the group effect (p = 0.021, (Formula presented.) = 0.036) in the TIA500 value, but the effects of side and gender were insignificant (p > 0.05). While the gender effect was found to be significant for the AOD500 (p = 0.030, (Formula presented.) = 0.032) and ARA500 (p = 0.019, (Formula presented.) = 0.038) variables, the group and side effects were statistically insignificant (p > 0.05). There was a significant difference in IOP values between sedentary individuals (15.82 ± 2.69) and athletes (14.61 ± 1.80) (p = 0.004, (Formula presented.) = 0.057). There was a significant difference between the right (15.71 ± 2.70) and left (14.87 ± 2.02) sides (p = 0.027, (Formula presented.) = 0.033). The effect of gender was not significant (p > 0.05). When the results were evaluated, a significant effect of the TEMPORAL side in RNFL parameters (p = 0.003, (Formula presented.) = 0.058) was observed. Correlations were seen between the anterior segment and RNFL parameters in both groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Athletes exhibited lower IOP compared with sedentary individuals, with similar RNFL parameters but distinct correlation patterns with anterior segment structures. These findings suggest that ocular parameters should be evaluated in an integrated manner and that physical activity may support ocular health by contributing to IOP reduction and potentially slowing the progression of eye diseases.

Disease Burden and Sexual Life in Patients With Multiple Sclerosis: A Phenomenological Study

Çakmak, Seher; Uzun, Sevda; Demir Çam, Sevgi

This study aims to examine the burden of disease experienced by multiple sclerosis patients and to deeply examine the impact of the disease on sexual life. A phenomenological research design was used in this study. This qualitative research was conducted with 20 multiple sclerosis patients. Interviews were conducted individually and face-to-face. The data were analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis method. Two main themes (effects of the disease and sexual life) and five sub-themes (physical effects, mental effects, social effects, problems related to sexual life, sexual issues, and coping) were identified in the analysis of the data. As a result of the study, it was determined that the patients experienced serious physical, mental, and social problems due to multiple sclerosis, and their sexual lives were also negatively affected. Individuals experience significant issues related to their sexual life due to multiple sclerosis. Since multiple sclerosis is a multifaceted disease, it is thought that professional evaluation of sexuality in patients, diagnosis of sexual dysfunctions, and taking timely measures are of great importance to improve the quality of life of multiple sclerosis patients.

Sol–Gel Synthesized CuFe2O4-Modified Biochar Derived from Tea Waste for Efficient Ni(II) Removal: Adsorption, Regeneration, and ANN Modeling

Duran, Celal; Ozeken, Sengul Tugba; Seker, Serdal; Ozdes, Duygu

In the present research, a novel magnetic adsorbent was developed via the sol–gel method by coating CuFe2O4 nanoparticles on biochar sourced from brewed tea waste. The synthesized adsorbent was utilized for the removal of Ni(II) ions from aqueous media. The adsorption efficiency of Ni(II) ions was assessed under crucial experimental conditions such as initial solution pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, and initial Ni(II) concentration. The adsorbent exhibited rapid adsorption kinetics, achieving equilibrium in approximately 15 min, and maintained high efficiency across a wide pH range. Adsorption experiments were conducted for Ni(II) solutions at their natural pH (5.6) to minimize chemical usage and enhance process simplicity. An impressive maximum adsorption capacity of 232.6 mg g−1 was recorded, outperforming many previously reported adsorbents. Furthermore, desorption studies demonstrated nearly 100% recovery of Ni(II) ions using 1.0 M HCl solution, indicating excellent regeneration potential of the adsorbent. Additionally, the prediction performance of an artificial neural network (ANN) model was evaluated to predict Ni(II) removal efficiency based on experimental variables, showing strong agreement with experimental data. Isotherm and kinetic models were also applied to the data to estimate the adsorption mechanisms. These findings demonstrate the promise of CuFe2O4-modified tea waste biochar for sustainable water treatment applications.

A Safe and Efficient Brain–Computer Interface Using Moving Object Trajectories and LED-Controlled Activation

Aydin, Sefa; Melek, Mesut; Gökrem, Levent

Nowadays, brain–computer interface (BCI) systems are frequently used to connect individuals who have lost their mobility with the outside world. These BCI systems enable individuals to control external devices using brain signals. However, these systems have certain disadvantages for users. This paper proposes a novel approach to minimize the disadvantages of visual stimuli on the eye health of system users in BCI systems employing visual evoked potential (VEP) and P300 methods. The approach employs moving objects with different trajectories instead of visual stimuli. It uses a light-emitting diode (LED) with a frequency of 7 Hz as a condition for the BCI system to be active. The LED is assigned to the system to prevent it from being triggered by any involuntary or independent eye movements of the user. Thus, the system user will be able to use a safe BCI system with a single visual stimulus that blinks on the side without needing to focus on any visual stimulus through moving balls. Data were recorded in two phases: when the LED was on and when the LED was off. The recorded data were processed using a Butterworth filter and the power spectral density (PSD) method. In the first classification phase, which was performed for the system to detect the LED in the background, the highest accuracy rate of 99.57% was achieved with the random forest (RF) classification algorithm. In the second classification phase, which involves classifying moving objects within the proposed approach, the highest accuracy rate of 97.89% and an information transfer rate (ITR) value of 36.75 (bits/min) were achieved using the RF classifier.

The interaction between the Mediterranean diet, obesity, and disease severity: A case–control study on psoriatic patients

Konyalıgil Öztürk, Nurefşan; Kurtbeyoğlu, Emine; Atuk Kahraman, Tutku; Çiçek, Betül; Çınar, Salih Levent; Borlu, Murat

Background: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease that can be influenced by nutritional status and dietary habits. In particular, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, is increasingly being investigated in relation to disease severity and nutritional status. Aims: This case–control study, including 50 psoriatic patients and 40 healthy controls, aimed to examine the correlation between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and disease severity, nutritional status, and disease presence in patients with psoriasis. Methods: The clinical severity of psoriasis was assessed using the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) score. Anthropometric measurements were taken, and body composition was determined using bioelectrical impedance analysis. All participants’ Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (PREDIMED) scores and 24-h food consumption records were evaluated. Results: The body weight (BW), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), and fat mass (FM) values of psoriatic patients were found to be significantly higher than those of the healthy control group (p < 0.05). The PREDIMED score of psoriatic patients was found to be significantly lower than that of the control group (p < 0.001). A negative correlation was observed between the PREDIMED score and BW, FM, and HC (p < 0.05). PASI levels decreased as PREDIMED scores increased (r = −0.314, p = 0.048). According to logistic regression analysis, after adjusting for age and sex, the likelihood of being healthy was approximately 6.363 times higher in those with high adherence to the Mediterranean diet (p < 0.001). Conclusion: When psoriatic patients were compared with healthy controls, significant differences were observed in PREDIMED scores. Notably, greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with reduced disease severity, suggesting a potential mitigating effect even in the presence of obesity.

Uzun, Sevda; Emirza, Elif Güzide; Gülırmak Güler, Kübra

Background: Nurses are among the most interactive professionals in society, providing both care and psychosocial and psychotherapeutic interventions for individuals with mental health issues. Nurse-centred approaches have demonstrated a positive impact on addressing mental health issues. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of psychosocial and psychotherapeutic interventions administered by nurses in managing mental health issues. Methods: For this meta-analysis, data were gathered through a comprehensive search of databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar and the YÖK Thesis Center, with no restrictions on publication year. Following the review process, a total of 25 studies were included in the analysis. The PRISMA checklist was employed to guide our study. Results: The meta-analysis revealed that interventions implemented by nurses in the context of mental health were effective. Specifically, the psychosocial and psychotherapeutic interventions significantly reduced depression levels in individuals (SMD: −0.918, 95% CI: −1.350 to −0.486; Z = −4.161; p < 0.05) and anxiety levels (SMD: −0.61, 95% CI: −1.190 to −0.029; Z = −2.59; p < 0.05). Additionally, these interventions were associated with an improvement in individuals' quality of life (SMD: 0.673, 95% CI: 0.303–1.403; Z = 3.56; p < 0.05). Conclusion: Nurses can play a pivotal role in addressing mental health issues, effectively contributing to the reduction of anxiety and depression levels while enhancing the overall quality of life for individuals.

Protocol for an umbrella review of systematic reviews evaluating the efficacy of digital health solutions in supporting adult cancer survivorship care

Keane, Danielle; Calbimonte, Jean-Paul; Pawlowska, Ewa; Kassianos, Angelos P.; Medina, Joan C.; Gregório, Joao; Serra-Blasco, Maria; Celebic, Aleksandar; Di Meglio, Antonio; Asadi-Azarbaijani, Babak

Introduction The growing number of people living with, through and beyond cancer poses a new challenge for sustainable survivorship care solutions. Digital health solutions which incorporate various information and communication technologies are reshaping healthcare; offering huge potential to facilitate health promotion, support healthcare efficiencies, improve access to healthcare and positively impact health outcomes. Digital health solutions include websites and mobile applications, health information technologies, telehealth solutions, wearable devices, AI-supported chatbots and other technologically assisted provision of health information, communication and services. The breadth and scope of digital health solutions necessitate a synthesis of evidence on their use in supportive care in cancer. This umbrella review will identify, synthesise, and compare systematic reviews which have evaluated the efficacy or effectiveness of digital solutions for adult cancer survivorship care with a particular focus on surveillance and management of physical effects, psychosocial effects, new cancer/ recurring cancers and supporting health promotion and disease prevention. Methods and analysis An umbrella review of published systematic reviews will be undertaken to explore the types of digital health solutions used, their efficacy or effectiveness as a form of supportive care, and the barriers and enablers associated with their implementation. The umbrella review will be reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Overviews of Reviews (PRIOR) checklist. A search will be conducted across key databases. Records will be assessed independently by two review authors for eligibility against predefined criteria and will undergo two stage title, abstract and full text screening. All systematic reviews that meet the inclusion criteria will be assessed for quality using the AMSTAR 2 checklist with quality assessment and data extraction by two reviewers. The degree of publication overlap of primary studies across the included reviews will also be calculated and a mapping of the evidence will also be presented.Ethics and dissemination As this research proposes using systematic reviews that are already published, ethical approval is not required. Results from this umbrella review will be published in a peer-reviewed journal where any significant deviations from the protocol will be justified.

Low Serum and Urine Fetuin-A Levels and High Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index as Risk Factors for Kidney Stone Formation

Icer, Mehmet Arif; Koçak, Tevfik; Icer, Yusuf; Kocyigit, Emine; Agagündüz, Duygu; Gezmen-Karadag, Makbule; Yesil, Suleyman; Budán, Ferenc

Background: Fetuin-A prevents the precipitation of hydroxyapatite in supersaturated solutions of calcium and phosphate; however, its relationship with nephrolithiasis has yet to be clarified. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective and predictive roles of serum and urine fetuin-A levels in nephrolithiasis and their relationships with the composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI). Methods: This study involved 75 adult patients with kidney stone disease and 71 healthy adults without kidney stone disease in the control group. Participants had specific anthropometric measurements taken, and three-day food records were kept. The CDAI was calculated by summing six standard antioxidants, including vitamins A, C, and E, manganese, selenium, and zinc, representing participants' antioxidant profile. In addition to some analyzed serum and urine parameters of the participants, fetuin-A levels were measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Results: In patients with kidney stones, both serum and urine fetuin-A levels (676.3 +/- 160.14 ng/mL; 166.6 +/- 128.13 ng/mL, respectively) were lower than in the control group (1455.6 +/- 420.52 ng/mL; 2267.5 +/- 1536.78 ng/mL, respectively) (p < 0.00001). In contrast, the CDAI was higher in patients with kidney stones compared to those without kidney stones (p < 0.001). Besides, several dietary parameters had significant positive correlations with serum and/or urinary fetuin-A. Conclusions: The present study suggests that serum and urinary fetuin-A levels may serve as protective factors against kidney stones and could potentially be used as predictive markers for the development of nephrolithiasis. Furthermore, our results suggest that the CDAI above a certain level may increase the risk of stone formation and that some dietary parameters may affect the levels of this biomarker in serum and urine.
